The film, set in August 1917 - January 1918, tells the story of a married Irish woman who has an affair with a British officer during World War I, despite moral and political opposition from her nationalist neighbours; it stars Robert Mitchum, Sarah Miles, John Mills, Christopher Jones, Trevor Howard and Leo McKern. The film is a re-telling of the plot of Gustave Flaubert's novel Madame Bovary.In August 1917, Rosy Ryan, only daughter of the local publican, widower Tom Ryan, is bored with life in Kirrary, an isolated village on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. The villagers are nationalists, taunting British soldiers from a nearby army camp. Tom Ryan publicly supports the recently suppressed Easter Rising, but secretly serves the British as an informer.
Rosy falls in love with the village schoolmaster, widower Charles Shaughnessy. She imagines, though he tries to convince her otherwise, that he will somehow add excitement to her life. They marry and settle in the schoolhouse, but he is a quiet man uninterested in physical love.
Major Randolph Doryan arrives in October 1917 to take command of the army camp. After winning a Victoria Cross on the Western Front, he has a crippled leg and is suffering from shell shock. When he visits the pub where Rosy is serving alone, he collapses under a flashback to the trenches and is comforted by her. The two kiss passionately until they are interrupted by the arrival of Ryan and others. Next day, the two ride to a forest for a passionate liaison. Charles becomes suspicious of Rosy, but keeps his thoughts to himself.
Charles takes his schoolchildren to the beach, where he notices Doryan's telltale footprints accompanied by a woman's in the sand. He tracks the prints to a cave and imagines Doryan and Rosy conducting an affair. Local halfwit Michael notices the footprints as well and searches the cave. Finding a button from Doryan's uniform, he pins it on his lapel and proudly parades through the village, but suffers abuse from the villagers. When Rosy comes riding past, Michael approaches her tenderly. Between Rosy's dismay and Michael's pantomime, the villagers surmise that she is having an affair with Doryan.
One night in January 1918, during a fierce storm, IRB leader Tim O'Leary - who had killed a police constable earlier - and a small band of his men arrive in Ryan's pub seeking help to recover a shipment of German arms being floated from a ship towards the beach. When they leave, Ryan tips off the British. The entire village turns out to help the rebels, with Ryan the most outwardly devoted to the task, wading into the breakers repeatedly to salvage boxes of weapons and explosives. O'Leary is overwhelmed by Ryan's devotion, and the villagers are ebullient. They gleefully free the rebels' loaded truck from the wet sand and follow it up the hill. Doryan, waiting at the top with his troops, captures the men and arms. O'Leary makes a break, but Doryan climbs atop the truck and brings him down with a single rifle shot. Then he suffers a flashback and collapses. Rosy presses through the crowd in concern, outraging the villagers.
Charles tells Rosy that he had let her affair run its course, hoping that the infatuation would pass, but now wants a separation. Rosy says the affair is over, but that night she leaves their bed in her nightdress to meet Doryan. In dismay, Charles wanders in his nightclothes to the beach, where the parish priest Father Collins finds him. The villagers storm into the schoolhouse and seize Rosy, convinced that she informed the British of the arms shipment. Ryan watches in shame and horror as his daughter takes the blame for his actions. The mob shears off her hair and strips off her clothes.
Doryan walks along the beach and gives his cigarette case to Michael. In gratitude, Michael leads Doryan to a cache of arms, including dynamite, that was not recovered. After Michael runs off, Doryan commits suicide by detonating the explosives. The next day, Rosy and Charles leave for Dublin, enduring the taunts of the villagers as they go.***the copy rights are not my I do not earn anything with this it is a hobby of mine ***
I think John Mills' Michael was the best and most redeeming character. He was not a threat to anyone. Only sought affection from the lovely Rosie, as you can see his tears at the end when she tenderly kisses him on the cheek goodbye. And he befriends the Major, who treats him kindly. He ran to Rosie to deliver the horrible news the only way he can that the Major had killed himself, and she understood completely what Michael was trying to tell her. A masterpiece. Trevor Howard played such a man of honor, integrity, loyalty and bravery. As well as humane as one can be in a society of cruelty.

Sarah Miles claims that Christopher Jones was grieving for Sharron Tate during filming which is maybe why he seems in a trance like state and his eyes are so sad.
A masterful film that you have to watch twice to fully appreciate. An exceptional cast with a wonderful script and beautifully filmed in West Kerry depicting a troubled time in Ireland’s history shortly before independence. A love story that ends tragically but on a note of hope. Directed by David Lean, Scripted by Robert Bolt and filmed by Freddie Young - All masters of their craft. This film could easily have won half a dozen Oscar’s but in the event walked away with two. One of my all time favourite films.
Mine too. I never understood the criticism of this film. To me it is an exquisite masterpiece. Seen it many times, it never gets old. Breathtaking!

The way the Irish were treated by the British was disgusting. The movie made the native Irish people look like savage peasants while their country was invaded. The woman cheated. It was not love it was sex. The movie was written by a person from England... Robert Bolt. Maybe a little slanted. He is talented but I feel he had a purpose. The cheating woman was made to look like a victim. Mitchum looked pitiful. The cheating British soldier was made to look heroic and sensitive. I think I understand the criticism for this movie. I have read many who criticized It. The Irish suffered dearly. I have a close friend I am living with you who experienced the trauma in the '70s. Romance is not having intercourse with a man while married to another man. Her body was used by two different men which is really disturbing. I have seen comments that say it was beautiful it was wonderful It was romantic. I disagree. It was disgusting behavior by two people. Desire, lust, boredom is not romantic. What was the most beautiful thing about the movie? Romanticizing infidelity is disturbing.

A love story? Infidelity with a person sent to control your people? The way they portrayed the local people, like savages? Just because they bet and had sex doesn't be there was love. Possibly her frustration with her life. In my opinion, it was sex not love. Hollywood can make anything romantic. Possibly mental illness and frustration. Not romantic and very disturbing.
I hadn’t made the link between Major Doryan and Lawrence of Arabia before. Two troubled heroes of World War 1 trying to fight other people’s wars. Both subjects for director David Lean.
David Lean was a great film director.

I think this is most moving love film ever made. But it's also a beautiful story of passion and revolution.
I saw an interview with Gregory Peck where he kept mentioning this film which brought me here. I'm wondering how I never heard of it before and I really want to see it now, thanks for sharing janneke Emmerink.

@@helenwalsh3726It had an astonishing worm sequence. They waited six months for such a huge storm; 70mm Superpanavision cameras on the rocks. No CGI/studio tanks. Extras running across the rocks in the teeth of a gale storm.

Yess, Christopher Jones was not the best actor. His lines were dubbed because he could not speak British. And his love scenes with the lovely Sarah Miles were catatonic, and like Roger Ebert stated, was like contorting with a corpse. But he had some touching scenes, like his friendship and kindness towards Michael. And his PTSD scenes very realistic. But he was not the right choice for Major Doryan. But Robert Mitchem, Trevor Howard, John Mills, Sarah Miles, Leo McKern and Barry Foster were all excellent in this excellent and beautiful film. One of my all time favorites!!!
I have to say, the first time Major Doryan met Rose in that tavern, wow! What a fantastic scene! As a woman, I've swooned over that every time. Never thought of Jones' acting as catatonic. I guess to each their own! 🙂 Great movie.
