When I was a kid my grand father, father an their friends worked as carpenters and joiners building these film sets and they never forgot the help, friendship and memories of the locals. My sons still work in the film/TV industry to this day, a great family tradition.
I remember going to the village with Dingle man Owen Keane and my late wife Bernadette. It was a shame that it's now gone. True though, it did marvels for the Dingle area.
Such a shame that they did not keep the set. It would have been an added attraction for the Blasket Museum in Dunquin. The schoolhouse is falling into pieces. I have been in Dunquin, and on the Blasket Island, left a piece of my heart there...
@michaelanthonyconn I always wondered which scenes were shot in South Africa but could never pick it from the movie. Where did you get your information from?
Great film - only watched it recently and it's a classic.

Thank you, that was very interesting. I didn't realise just how much of an impact the film has had on the area.

anyone know if the old school house is still standing?
chessfun - barely! I was there a few years back and it need to be restored.
The school house??? Just about managing to stand!!!
Just imagine.... They, the locals, bulldozed the focking village that David Lean gave to them
