The most underrated film ever. The critical response to Ryan's Daughter was outrageous. NEVER trust critics, people who are incapable of creation, but expert at destruction. The American contingent shamed themselves for all time for their display of ignorance when reviewing this masterpiece.

Ryan's Daughter is so damn beautiful and has such a fantastic score that it doesn't even need a screenplay!!

I knew none of the background information about Sarah's life, but found her an incredibly wonderful believable actress in this film!
Maybe because I adore Trevor Howard and every movie, he has ever been in.

Since I haven't seen this movie in over 50 years, it is a bit difficult to say a lot about it. However I remember finding it believable and involving. I thought Sarah Miles did a wonderful job, and that Ireland was stunningly beautiful.

The quote about Pauline Kael circa 24:50 is actually from a letter that another critic present, Richard Schickel of Time, wrote to Kevin Brownlow--per Paul Benedict Rowan's "Making Ryan's Daughter," p. 288

Ryan's Daughter is the best film I have ever seen. It is a microcosm of the whole of human existence with all of its subtleties, excesses and hypocrisy, painted by David Lean and a cast of characters who performed their parts perfectly. Sarah Miles can say more with an expression than most people can say in a chapter of a book.
It is important to remember filming took place over a period of a year in remote locations. Half way through the filming, Chris Jones's pregnant girlfriend, Sharon Tate was mercilessly butchered in a murder so monstrous that it has been described as ending the 1960s. A mix of media outrage, obsession and hysteria followed, even assigning demonic powers to the murderers.
How can anyone live and work with such a thing haunting them? That he finished the film at all is a testament to Mr Jones. He had been a fast rising star and never appeared in another film for the rest of his life, except for brief cameo to satisfy friend.

I never care what critics of movies say, I never did just like I don't give a toot about the Academy Awards, they're archaic. If I'd listened to critics negative reviews, I would have avoided a lot of movies I absolutely love. Bogdanovich faced the same kind of ridicule, that Lean did, a few years later over DAISY MILLER(1973), a period piece based on Henry James and Sergio Leone couldn't live down the butchering of his gangster opus ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA(1984). Period piece films at this time didn't seem to go off well as period stories seemed to have done on television on venues like Masterpiece Theater. Films like RD and DM seemed old fashioned and out of date in the early 1970s and even complex to a young audience weened on a lot of schlocky drive-in movies. Though it's nice to know the comparison of RD to source material Madame Bovary, I'd wager that most teens and even adults would never have read Madame Bovary. Placing the story in 1916 doesn't harm the essence of an adulterous affair but it keeps with Lean's penchant for stories set in WW1. The '60s would've been the 50th anniversary of the WW1 years and both 'Lawrence' and 'Zhivago' take place in that time frame. For me however, I love going to art museums and RD, filmed in wonderful color, is much like going to picture gallery and step into another world. Lean includes the usage of his locations as a cast member much like a good silent movie director and like he did in 'Bridge', 'Lawrence' and maybe a little lesser in 'Dr. Zhivago'. Any number of actors could've played the parts that Miles, Mitchum and Chris Jones played. Trevor and John Mills were stalwart character actors and were rightly lauded for their portrayals. Yes, it's a small or cheap story of adultery told on a grand wide or as some would say over-indulgent canvas, but so what! It's a trip to Ireland for many who will never go. RD is excellent film making, and kudos to Lean and Bolt for not letting behind the scenes squabbles or actors personal vicissitudes ruin the final outcome.😃

@@FritzandtheOscars Apologies to her fans (assuming she has any!), but I have never understood how or why Miles became a film star. I can only suppose that early in her career she must have been good in something, but whatever that magical film/play/TV role was I missed it. I can't claim to have seen every film she has made, but she has been terrible in every one that l have had the misfortune of watching. She is especially awful in 'Lady Caroline Lamb', which was written specifically for her by her then husband Robert Bolt as a showcase, and she was backed up by a supporting cast including Laurence Olivier, John Mills, Ralph Richardson and Margaret Leighton - but surrounding her with these genuine talents only served to further expose her as an out-of-her-depth amateur. And as a delicious irony, Robert Bolt had Leighton say of Miles, to her screen husband, "Your wife is a mass of nothing. She has no centre, nothing at all". Talk about art imitating life! PS: I also find her silly act during the Oscar ceremony an embarrassment and extremely discourteous to her co-presenter George Segal.

This film is a crashing bore… I have tried to watch it often and gave up. I am not a Mitchum fan, I could never understand what all the fuss is about with this dude. I love David Lean’s movies so I wondered what is wrong with this one and then I give up with the same thinking you mentioned about Blow-Up (which I also think is a piece of sh…). This said, I adore your videos and I am totally waiting the next one… thank you so much!
