  • A small comparison between GCam and Photo Pro on the Sony Xperia 1 II. You can achieve similar results on the Xperia 5 II and also Xperia 1 III & 5 III
    Get GCam for Xperia 1 II & 5 II + 1 III & 5 III here: app.box.com/s/...
What do you think about the GCam mod for the Xperias ?
Is it up to the game or only usable for night time photos?
How about video mode? Stabilization is worse than Photo Pro (Basic)?

I just installed on 5ii . I haven't take a single shot yet . Quick install. I think eventually each company will sell there 'color science ' as an app . Gcam , sonycam, samcam. And also I think taking Raw pics are best . In a few years processing software will be better . It's better to archive the Data for later use. Also natural pictures look better when you look back at them 20 years from now . Sorry for long writing .

Great comparison! This is what most reviewers should see. They say the camera on Sony phones sucks because the app doesn't do what they want? Sigh
Here's a solution from our fellow UA-camr too, just install a 3rd party camera app like Gcam.

@@lltechview Hello again. I have tried the Gcam some more. It's very unstable. Took some photos in low light, and the photos turn out much brighter - which is great. But the photos are very noisy. Especially the ultra wide which is worst. The telephoto is also noisy when cropping in. The main lens not so bad, but Sony better.
I found out how to get HDR toggle in the shortcut you pull down from top of the screen. Go to settings, then advanced, then you turn on hdr+-control. Now you can choose between HDR+ and HDR Enhanced in the shortcut curtain - you know where settings, ratio, and WB are.

Thanks a lot for this comparison! Just a question, on the low light comparison at 17:01 and 17:31 I assume that the photo pro images were not done with full manual control, right? I saw your "Sony Photo Pro - Nighttime Tips (Xperia 1 II/5 II)" video where you showed you were able to take a picture of a game controller despite having no actual light and were able to do it because of the manual control in Xperia's photo pro. So I assume that the images at 17:01 and 17:31 would've been at least equal or if not better than the gcam if Xperia's full manual control was used?

Just for clarity -- I compared the Xperia 1 II to the S8 and even it takes better photos. Especially in dark areas and macro shots. Kind of a bummer, considering the promises and prices. @@namelesssnitchy uh huh, that's not what I'm inferring! You are arguing against Saf's statements, that iPhone can use Filmic pro for pro controls but Sony cannot get as good an auto mode as the iPhone.
So you are using a random port of an app that's not guaranteed to work in the desired way as a counter argument! That's not sensible at all.
Pro controls will work similarly across all smartphones, the final result will depend on the quality of the sensor itself. Pro controls won't make up for a mediocre sensor. But a good native auto mode with computational photography can bridge the gap between a relative poor sensor and a high end sensor!
I use Gcam on my Zenfone Max Pro M1 and it's a must, it transforms a terrible camera into something that takes absolutely excellent images! But Gcam cannot be used as a cover for a 1200usd phone. It's a 3rd party mod, it's not even available on the play store. It's almost like stealing GOOGLE's computational prowess and saying it's an "option available for the Xperia". The Xperia needs a proper auto mode.
Other phones like the S21U, has a much advanced and larger main sensor capable of 12bit raw images, it's auto mode is excellent but it also comes with proper pro mode for both stills and video!
