Hey James, i ordered the Xperia 5ii. Will probably receive it next monday. i am a big Sony fan (since sony ericsson PS1 etc.) Many reviewers are negative about Sony, i was a bit worried if i chose the right phone. I hate having a notch, i do like having a mini jack in a phone. Now that i've watched some of your videos about the pro apps i know i chose the right one. I do not know much about photography but i'm always intrigued by it. This phone and your help might help me get more out of it. You make some great videos. Honest and fair. Hey Andrew, thanks so much. Maybe check out my video from last week, Sony Xperia 1 ii Camera (COMPLETE REVIEW!). I go into deep detail on the strengths and weaknesses of the Xperia 1 ii vs the Pixel in both CI and in the Photo Pro app! 🙏✌
Just today got the Xperia 5 III, and have to say I'm super disappointed with the camera and pro app. I do a lot of DSLR photography in my work, and always shoot in full manual mode so getting into the app's Ui was easy enough, but in the pro manual mode three things really bug me. 1. I am forced to use the shutter button on the camera - which obviously leads to camera shake. When you shoot in basic mode, I can use an on screen camera button. 2. In portrait mode on the pro camera, the Ui does not rotate - WHY??!!?!?!?!?!? ridiculous. 3. Most importantly, the RAW images coming out of the device via pro mode are terrible. Just a mushy blurred incoherent mess of a file. They look like digital files you used to get 20 years ago. Taking like for like shots in RAW and then JPG (or even just shooting raw plus Jpg) the JPG files are still bad, but much better than the Raws as a base image to work on. Way less noise, far more in focus. I've no idea why, but shooting RAW in manual mode just throws focusing way off, to the point of being unusable, certainly indoors - even with good noon sunlight. I think Sony are now so accustomed, to selling to people who spray and pray, their entire system is geared towards continuous focus/shooting modes. In anything single shot (hand held) I find the Xperia 5 iii such a bummer. So yeah, as a basic point and shoot.....I'd say its just OK, but the experience of doing that with an iPhone is infinitely nicer and faster. As a device for doing stuff that's a bit more considered - yes its a phone at the end of the day so don't expect much, but it's left me very underwhelmed to say the least. Back to point and shoot iphone I go.
I've just discovered your channel by trying to ind out if I should get the Xperia 1 II. Thank you very much for help with the camera quality. So for me the answer is yes as I also want the best Music quality. I was wondering also wat are you using to film your UA-cam video? Maybe I could use something similar for all my Teams and Zoom appointments? Thank you in advance!
I have a question. With the 24mm cam, continuous af, and wide focus you get the squares that focus. Using the exact same settings with the 70mm lens or the 16mm lens I don't get those squares so I'm never sure if it is focussing and on what. You know how this works?
Hello.. I need help. My sony xperia 1 ii is not saving all the photos from photo-pro.. I checked the settings and it's already set to (internal storage). But still when I take some photos using the photo pro app, it's not saving the photos..anywhere on the phone. None of it. Thanks.
Bonjour Ced Je viens d'acquérir le Xperia pro i Une question Mes photos sont de meilleures qualités en JPEG que en format Raw Même en post-production je n'arrive pas à la netteté du format JPEG Pourquoi Merci Cordialement
Thank you! Yes, it can be a challenge with small phone sensors and limited AI, maybe try the DRO mode in Photo Pro and see what that yields for you...✌️
@@fahdzaa I couldn't get decent indoor shots of my fast-moving kids: the subjects are often blurred, overexposed and artificial lighting looks yellow. So, I swapped for a Pixel 5 which is point-and-shoot perfection. If you prefer shooting landscapes and/or nature, perhaps the Xperia is better for those circumstances
That was very informative, thank you. I am doing some research on what to get on Black Friday: either the Xperia 5ii or the Samsung FE, and of course, the camera is a priority. I know nothing about manual photography, so I was wondering how much work is required of the user to achieve a photo quality from the Xperia 5ii on the same level as the auto-processed cameras of Pixel and Samsung. And if it is possible to surpass them given the right amount of work and study. I am worried that the learning curve will not be rewarding enough for someone who has to basically learn everything. In that case, maybe I should just stick with Samsung. I am still undecided, but I am already subscribing to your channel to learn more about auto-photography. It will be really helpful if I decide to go with Xperia 5ii. It already helps a lot to know that there is such coprehensive instruction for beginners.
Thanks so much, Vinicius! oh man, it's a tough choice, for sure. And with the newest iPhone 12 hitting the market, even tougher. Look, I believe that you get the best photos with the device that you are MOST comfortable with, truly. If I look back, some of my favorite photos were taken with a Samsung 8/9 or the iPhone. Some with a Sony full frame, and some with a Fuji film camera. The point is, whatever I had on me was great at the time, and now these devices are faaaaar superior in almost every case. If you want to have the ease of great photos right at your fingertips without fumbling around, then I say go for the Samsung or Pixel IMO. If you want to learn photography, then the 5ii may be a great entry for you while not giving up too much on the AI/Computational Imaging side (Like I said, the 5ii will be far superior than the old Samsungs or iPhones I have some of my favorite shots with). The point is, be sure you are enjoying the photo taking! And if you can learn some along the way, then great! My humble opinion, anyway. Welcome to our community here and I look forward to seeing what you create!✌️
Same here. But the reaction of James is cool. If this Sony atleast makes better photos than the S9 i have im im. Was doubting which one to get, S20 but the Xperia 5ii has rly my attention. Maybe this looks not easy but i think im just going for it hehe.
PS: I would be super interested in a video tutorial for RAW editing on smartphones. I don't intend to keep transferring photos to my computer (although I appreciate how easy Sony made it if the tool-less sim/sd card) for editing, I would mostly be posting then on social media directly. I think Snapseed can work with RAW, but I am not sure I would know what to do with it to take the best of my photos. LOL.
You are very good you tuber i like your reviews . By the way i have updatet my Xperia 1 ii to android 11 a few days and the photo pro app har get a new function is called MR and the cinema pro app supports now 120 frames slow motion at 4 k resulotion i gress you in the USA will also soone get this updet you can check for that update on Xperia Check.com if it is already availlibly .
Hey Evgeniy, the camera setup is exactly the same except with the 5ii you don't get the ToF sensor which helps with faster autofocus and focusing in low light! Other than that, they are identical, as I understand it.
Hi mate, I know you can shoot RAW on this phone but is there a good APP to be able to process the RAW shots in camera instead of having to export it to a computer?
This is excellent! Exactly what I was looking for... a little more in depth feature review and tutorial specific to maximizing results from the Xperia directly, and not trying to translate from an Alpha tutorial that's not the same hardware. Do you plan on doing similar reviews / tutorials for the new Xperia 1 iii? That's my next device, and the camera lens setup and software setup is upgraded a bit from the 1 ii. Hoping to learn how to maximize results from it when I get it! Thanks!
Pro tip: The menu-option "Use Volume key as Shutter" affects also the volume buttons on a headset. This can be very useful. Thank you for the video! (Sony, please reconsider your embarrassing tutorial from the app-menu.)
As I understand it, the most important thing is to place the histrogram in the center? That is, phones often make a histrogram not in the center, is this their remaining problem?
Actually, I like to expose to the right, meaning that the histogram is pushed as far right as possible in order to get as much detail in the shadows as I can without blowing out the highlights. Then I can darken down to my liking. It's v hard to bring detail out of darks without introducing noise. Anyway, I made a whole video about this recently that you can check out for more detail and info!
Amazing, thanks! This is the 4th tutorial I'm watching on this app. I learned new things in your video because you explained some things more in depth! Very helpful. I love knowing what all of the settings do
You deserve more subscribers! as professional photographers don’t actually review phone cameras or at least not Phone Like Xperia! Hope to watch some latest Xperia Review like this!!
As myself using the iPhone, I usually seeks on photography whatever angles and didn’t fully keeps it when it is not appropriate photos are taken. It’s the same functions as the Sony which uses high quality cameras and lightings when on the move.
Thank you James, I've recently purchased the Xperia 1iii and this video had been more helpful than anything I've found so far. Just wish I found it before I spent two days in New York shooting in Basic mode 😂😂😂
Great video, that histogram tip is really helpful. Quick tip from my experience. When using the timer in the PhotoPro app (not sure if it happens in the regular app, haven't tried it), the phone focuses AFTER the timer winds down, and then takes the photo. This is important, especially if shooting handheld, since the timer countdown gives the user time to stabilize the phone after pressing the shutter button (since this action itself causes the phone to move!). When shooting lowlight photos, especially with the 70mm, reducing that shake is a must. If you don't use the timer, you'll always have a blurry image in low light shooting, since the app lowers the shutter speed. Another thing that I have noticed: When shooting in auto mode in low light on the 70mm, the lowest shutter speed, even in extreme lowlight, will be 1/8 @ 1000 iso. My guess is that the app is trying to find the right balance between noise and camera shake. To get around this, you have to use manual mode. Check out quick tests shots using the 70mm in extreme lowlight. www.reddit.com/r/SonyXperia/comments/imakwo/so_about_that_70mm_lens_auto_mode_limits_shutter/
Yes, but where are the example photos with each of these features? The before and after photos like you showed in the comparison video with the iPhone? I can't figure out if i should buy this phone because I'm not sure if i can do what you did in that comparison video. The coolest thing to see was that you could make better photos than were possible with the iPhone, just by changing a few settings. Can you give a tutorial on how to do that? If i don't think i can really take advantage of this Xperia app, then I might be tempted buy a point-and-shoot phone, like the Pixel, iPhone, or Galaxy.
Hey Joe, I have made a few videos about processing. One is a two minute Snapseed tutorial and the other is the Contrast in Lightroom video. That's basically all I've done with these photos. No heavy edits!
@@JamesLavish Hi, James. Thanks for the answer. I guess I phrased my question incorrectly. I wasn't referring to post-processing. I was referring to how images looked taken with the stock camera app versus how they would look with the appropriate settings in the Pro camera app. That's what was most important to me. Convincing myself that my results would be excellent, as long as I could make the same adjustments in the pro app that you were making.
Ah I see. Well the images come out pretty flat in the Photo Pro compared to say the iPhone or Samsung, but if you expose properly there is plenty of detail there for you to adjust! It takes extra time and effort (not that long, but if you are taking tons of photos it could get taxing, tbh) I loved my Pixels and now love my iPhone 12 Pro and it is v convenient that way. So if you want to play with the settings and take manual photos I recommend the Sony. Otherwise the options I mentioned are super capable. Hope that helps!!!
Is there any way to expand the viewfinder to take the full width of the display after adjusting my settings? Seems a bit restrictive especially if I'm tracking a moving subject.
Great video. Only thing I don't get is with shutters speed. In my previous sony phones I had the option to play with ss and up to 1 sec, it would take much more time to take the picture but it would be much better at gathering more light at night. How to use this for night pictures? I see no difference. Thanks in advance

None of it. Thanks.
Bonjour Ced
Je viens d'acquérir le Xperia pro i
Une question
Mes photos sont de meilleures qualités en JPEG que en format Raw
Même en post-production je n'arrive pas à la netteté du format JPEG
Pourquoi
Merci
Cordialement
The music is distracting, but the info is great!
Noted. Thanks Charles.
Great insights. I must admit I am struggling with the camera on this phone, I got better results with my 3 year-old Galaxy S9, so far
Thank you! Yes, it can be a challenge with small phone sensors and limited AI, maybe try the DRO mode in Photo Pro and see what that yields for you...✌️
IM really curious how u doing atm with it, u became better in it? I have the S9 and looking for the Xperia 5ii, doing some research etc.
Hi james. When will you do the video like this again with new sony Xperia 1iv.
Please make a video of Xperia 1 i i i and a comparison with iPhone 12 pro and s21 ultra please 💐
Jesus. Really love your clip. Amazing explanation
Thanks for this video.. ❤️luv from India
You're welcome, same from the States!✌️
@@JamesLavish 🤩
you are great 😍😍.. make also with 1 iii or 1 iv.. ❤️❤️❤️
Can you updates this tutorial for de Sony 1III please!!
I wish LG v series was still here. V20 was a beast with such features .
You definitely deserve way more views and subscribers. Keep up the good work! 🔥
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! 🙏✌
How’s the battery life? I noticed that at the beginning I’m of the video, the phone was at 94% and by the end it was 54%. That is a significant drop
Thanks for the detailed video by the way. Very handy. I’m thinking of switching from iPhone. Your suggestions might be helpful.
does photo pro app also reacts to voice to take a photo? - i have only one hand...
Am I able to take long exposure shots using the photo pro app?
PS: I would be super interested in a video tutorial for RAW editing on smartphones. I don't intend to keep transferring photos to my computer (although I appreciate how easy Sony made it if the tool-less sim/sd card) for editing, I would mostly be posting then on social media directly. I think Snapseed can work with RAW, but I am not sure I would know what to do with it to take the best of my photos. LOL.
Yep, Snapseed can do RAW, and that tutorial is coming in the near future!
SONY is SONY🔥🔥🔥
It does have great capabilities
if yes, i want to watch video using Xperia 5 ii photo ?
People don't notice this phn battery drain so fast
Great info.. I need to watch it a few times !! Thanks as always for a great tutorial...
Haha! Well you are super welcome! 😉
XP professional Xperia 1 Mark 5 🙏 king 👑
You are very good you tuber i like your reviews . By the way i have updatet my Xperia 1 ii to android 11 a few days and the photo pro app har get a new function is called MR and the cinema pro app supports now 120 frames slow motion at 4 k resulotion i gress you in the USA will also soone get this updet you can check for that update on Xperia Check.com if it is already availlibly .
Thanks Wilhelm-Bernhard! I really appreciate that and the info!
Hello James. My English is not very good. I want to ask if there are any differences between cameras sony 1II and sony 5II ? Thank you.
Hey Evgeniy, the camera setup is exactly the same except with the 5ii you don't get the ToF sensor which helps with faster autofocus and focusing in low light! Other than that, they are identical, as I understand it.
Hi mate,
I know you can shoot RAW on this phone but is there a good APP to be able to process the RAW shots in camera instead of having to export it to a computer?
You should try the App Snapseed from Google, it's very good :)
Nice video thanks I have a Xperia 1 ii 😁 can you do a video on
Sony nex 5n
Thanks so much! I don't have the 5 but am trying to get my hands on one! 🙏🏻✌🏻
Is Xperia 5 ii can get these type of images
Waiting for you to get the Sony Xperia 1 iii
This is excellent! Exactly what I was looking for... a little more in depth feature review and tutorial specific to maximizing results from the Xperia directly, and not trying to translate from an Alpha tutorial that's not the same hardware. Do you plan on doing similar reviews / tutorials for the new Xperia 1 iii? That's my next device, and the camera lens setup and software setup is upgraded a bit from the 1 ii. Hoping to learn how to maximize results from it when I get it! Thanks!
Me too. Hoping he does or somebody lol
Very useful video! you are teaching me how to use the Photo Pro app also teaching me the basic photography at the same time!
Awesome to hear, Jackson. Thanks for letting me know and super happy to help!
Pro tip: The menu-option "Use Volume key as Shutter" affects also the volume buttons on a headset.
This can be very useful.
Thank you for the video!
(Sony, please reconsider your embarrassing tutorial from the app-menu.)
Super useful. Thank you! ✌️
Thank you!
WOW 👑 SONY GOD FOREVER#1 ✌️ 👑
Thank you for such a good guide. Got my Xperia phone two days ago and the camera had me scratching my head, not now.
Awesome. So happy it helped! ✌
Amazing, thanks! This is the 4th tutorial I'm watching on this app. I learned new things in your video because you explained some things more in depth! Very helpful. I love knowing what all of the settings do
thank you so mech
Nice phone & awesome host🔥
How is the battery life? Does it drain too fast when photo pro is used?
Not that I noticed...The battery is at different levels in this video because I got interrupted a few times 😉✌
Thank you sir
Please do sony xperia 1 iii
You deserve more subscribers! as professional photographers don’t actually review phone cameras or at least not Phone Like Xperia! Hope to watch some latest Xperia Review like this!!
Can you bring 1iii,and 5 iii?
Reminds me of my RX100 MkVII as far as controls. I could see adapting to this phone quickly with that app.
hey sir , would you like to review some wireless stuff ?
Hi Charlie, please have all business inquiries directed through jameslavishphotography.com. Thank you!
@@JamesLavish ok, sent you emails, and no response yet .... maybe all the emails just goes to the junkbox directly...
Charlie, apologies just found it and will reply. Thank you!
Do a tutorial for mark 3
The battery of the phone drain quickly?
Not really...I got interrupted a few times...made the day a lot longer than the video seems😉
Sony all times best
This is super well done. Helpful to everyone. Thank you.
Thank so much, Centerman! I truly appreciate that! 🙏✌

Great tips, 3 sec timer in low light, especially! Thanks so much! ✌
