Wow impressive results for the pixel 5, however I do like the dynamic range better for the blue skies on the Xperia. But pixel night mode really shines here. Thanks for sharing
Here you are again making a ridiculously amazing video, and here I am again stating how ridiculously bad the Xperia did in terms of dynamic range, portrait mode, low light, video stabilisation in 4k and focus. I really really don't get it lol. I liked the colours from it though! Also the Pixel's front facing video was so bad, damn... Thanks a lot for this fantastic video. Freaking love your channel! 👏
Pixel has less inconsistencies. But i prefer the natural lighting to be captured like on the Xperia and not erase the sun and make every photo a painting thank you.
It depends on where you focus... I think that between them you can barely notice differences, they are both really good. But definitely the portrait mode is superior in Pixel
Great video! I'm very interested in the 1 III so hoping to see an equally great comparison somewhere for that once it's released. Love what Sony is doing with their phones, but it's hard to give up the ease of point and shoot of a Pixel. Great to have manual mode, but capturing events as they happen is more in line with the way we all use our phone cameras. Hoping the III addresses this and I can make that my new device!
I don't think Sony is bothering to target the point and shoot crowd anymore. They've been marketing towards pro photographers for awhile now, which is too bad.
Pixel seems much sharper and more realistic to me. The Sony takes nice shots, except that things seem to completely disappear in the shadows. Stabilization looked better on the Pixel. No comparison on the night shots. Pixel much better. I thought the Sony did better with front facing in daylight, but not at night.
He did start off with saying he did a point and shoot test. As I’ve gathered from other videos, even with the pro modes on auto, Sonys computation isn’t the best, but if you tweak the settings with manual control, you get camera-like settings and can make the pictures way better than automatic shots. If it’s better than pixel I don’t know though.
@@Timmahh85 But tweaking those setting's everytime is take significantly much more time to do, I mean if I can got excellent photo with pizel by 1 second quick snap compared to tweaking the setting's everytime (even if I can got the better picture if I know how to used it), probably I still sticks to first choice tho. I used Sony's mirrorless, but I absolutely don't want to thinkering about setting when I used smartphone, well okay I still sometimes tweaking the exp value before shoot, but I'm not a proffessional, I used smartphone camera 99,9% for quick snap moments.
Thank you very much, I have been waiting a long time for such a comparison. I liked the Sony more, the Pixel is also good but there is over-sharpness sometimes.
Pixel 5 is definitely the better overall performer here but Sony is not far from it, I believe that Sony could improve the auto mode performance and bring it on par with Google if they just would see the effort, of course playing with Pro-mode could work as well. Happy new owner of Xperia 1 Mark II here. :)
I used to have a Pixel 6, but unfortunately it broke. Still, what surprised me about it was that its resolution was super good, both for photography and video.
Great video. I have both these phones and got similar results when I tested them yesterday. The pixel is a great all rounder, but what it does to blues and greens I find frustrating but then again it's the 'pixel' look. It also has some noise in most images. The Sony takes a natural shot but I find it's not as consistent even if you know what you're doing. They really need to improve the auto mode. Yeah I use pro mode a fair bit but sometimes you just want to point and shoot. Also the grant facing portrait mode is just awful 😂🤦🏾♂️. No denying that. I still prefer the Sony overall even with its flaws. Great video thanks for taking the time to put this together!
As always thanks for the video Grant. It's the Pixel 5 for me all day. The last 1080p 30 fps was surprising to me. I am not sure why Sony chose so much smoothing.
@@GrantLikesTech Jesus! I am sure you mentioned it but I missed that. I would love for Sony to do a Google play edition. I love what they do with their phones but the cameras are hit and miss into many areas for me.
As a sony fan, I do agree the Pixel is better here. But I still love the sony for its colors. Sony really need to improve their auto mode. Great video btw👍
Great shots and impressive results all the way through. But I could use a bit more information and opinion from you when the difference in the pictures show more clearly. Especially around shades and low light settings, as to which one comes closer to the real picture of what you see yourself. I’d like to know this as well with your portraits and selfies, as the skin tone is different, but which one is the true picture?
Sony Easily beat Pixel 5, Terms of Colors and Details as "Texture" (Pixel 5 got sharpness by AI and Auto Correction after the shot, thats make Pictures ugly with contrast border lines without anysense) a Real Camera shot like Sony and never like Pixel. Sony with latest Update improve the HDR quality of Pictures and Videos (You can test it right now with Android 11) and you will check how that Sony would easily beat the competitors with 12/16/64/108 mpx :D
Ah I really wish you did some testing in cinema Pro and Photography Pro. They updated those apps and the dynamic range in both pro honestly rivals iPhones. I'd imagine the people who buy this phone are doing so because they want to use these features since Apple and Samsung are the most mainstream manufacturers. Sony is quite expensive as well so the demographic that buys it really do utilise those apps. They have great tools in there. Standard app is quite garbage in comparison to the pro apps. James Lavish did a great video on the very topic in fact
All acknowledged at the beginning of the video. All photos were taken in Photo Pro app. Cinema pro is 21:9 and needs work like color grading to look decent. Samples in this video: ua-cam.com/video/bzTiSqGNGQE/v-deo.html
I’ve seen James work as well, and yes, he can get some amazing photos out of the pro apps from sony if he tweaks the settings. I got it from him, that if you really like to tweak with settings, the sony is the better camera in many conditions. But to me, I also really like the point and shoot style, so seeing how much difference there is, is important, as I also want some true pictures that isn’t just digitally fixed to look good, but be false on the eyes. Some of the low light pictures and portraits show different results, but the question to me is, how that would look with minimal tweaking on the sony pro apps :)
I don’t know why Sony can’t just compete with pixel phones in still photos .. and they make great camera lenses . There camera software just hasn’t caught up yet wit the competition but hardware and everything else .. their phones are amazing
Addressed this in the beginning and end of the video and pretty much all my other Sony videos. If leaving this comment makes you feel better, then so be it.
What I find to be a let-down regarding the Xperia is that it's just inconsistent, unreliable, and doesn't respond as quickly. Also, what's up with the bricked video mode? I've got the phone, by the way. There's so little control. I just don't like it. I'd rather buy a used DSLR for £1,099 than this "DSLR smartphone". As a phone, the Pixel 5 is the better choice because it's reliable and consistent and does a fantastic job. It's also way better at getting the colours right. The Xperia is horrendous and it's almost impossible to fix the shockingly inaccurate colours in low light interior photos. Idk. I think the but of AI work that Google has done has paid off.
Xperia definitely isn't geared to point and shoot crowd. Takes more work to get good results, but that seems to be their audience and focus these days.
Great video man. Your video is always very detailed and enjoyable. Sony xperia 1 ii has really improved. Almost on par with Pixel 5. Am surprised at this
Xperia 1 II is supposed to crash Pixel 5 is every single situation due to superior hardware. But it didn't which is very sad. The price difference between these two phones is significant enough to not even look at Sony flagships anymore. Sure Sony fans will continue to shout out loud about how computational photography is bad. Seriously I don't know why it is bad if so.
Pixel oversharp the images, pop up the color and lighten the shadows or dark areas Sony in a much natural color, and still maintain the shadows area, which most photographers likes
Pixel has a good software optimization. So it shines by it's self correcting mistakes. But in sony, we have to correct the mistakes by manual controls. If a Google camera is available for XPERIA, it will be better for non professionals. Is is available? G cam for XPERIA 1ii
@@GrantLikesTech devs are constantly working on compatibility of Gcam mod with almost every brand and model. I'm pretty sure there are currently working versions of Gcam for the new line of Xperia phones.
I think Xperia purposely does not invest so much in computational photography. I think they target a small portion of consumers - those who are willing to do manual settings. If only Gcam ports are totally compatible with Xperia 1 ii - then you get the best of both worlds - auto mode and manual. Sadly, they say Google Camera is not fully compatible with Xperia 1 ii.
I like pixel images.. It produce better dynamic range images and rich colours are really eye pleasing.. Sony images and videos looks really weak and not interest it..
Pixel is easily win with still using their old hardware + amazing software.. I love to see the next pixel device with large sensor with latest sd 888 platform.
Not sure what Google will do going forward. I suppose there's still the anticipation of their own chipset, but they've been very price conscious with their products, so it will be interesting.
The thing that amazes me about the Pixel 5 is taking night shots freehand. I try to keep it steady but when it's taking an exposure over a few seconds, no one can keep it still that long. Yet the P5 can still take a sharp, beautifully exposed photo. It almost feels like cheating and defying the laws of physics!
Pixel seems to keep HDR activated all the time. I loved the shadows contrast on the Xperia.
Wow impressive results for the pixel 5, however I do like the dynamic range better for the blue skies on the Xperia. But pixel night mode really shines here. Thanks for sharing

I really want to see what the Pixel line can do with a new sensor. The sensor in this Xperia is almost twice the size of the Pixel 5.
Don't we all 🤞🏼
Pixel uses computational images, same in iPhone 12, Huawei etc. , its a image gimmick not from the sensor itself
Sony only use the stock image sensor
