- A follower sent this 4x4 recovery video to me. Some of the things that are done have me bewildered as to why! There is so much in this 4x4 recovery that we can learn from. Making a plan for your 4wd recovery and taking the time to plan it out, is worth the effort!

I don’t know about or have much experience recovering, but watching these vids I realize that there are a lot of people who also don’t know anything about recovery, but pretend to. I now know that if or when I am in a recovery situation, i will need to double check every and not rely on pretend experts. Thank you for making these vids!

The green bridal is also pulling the recovery points inside. Never make a triangle. Depending on angles the force pulling inside can be even larger than pulling force due to geometry. That's a way to rip out points that should be pulled to mostly forward direction also.
That’s called the fleet angle and yes there is certainly forces being applied as you say.

Absolutely crazy unsafe recovery. These blokes are extremely lucky nothing failed... no doubt someone would have been injured.
Appears to be a simple case of economics, oversize tires and lift shackles are far more valuable than a snatch block and a tree saver strap... right up until you find yourself in that situation. Good stuff, keep it up Matt!

Matt, perhaps the Gent standing next to the winch lines was tuning them for a specific frequency? I wonder how they got it back home. I would guess that this was a home-built rig.

They definitely got themselves into a rough spot… I’m glad no one got hurt here. Recovery is definitely something I need to improve myself.
In outdoor climbing courses you learn pretty early on not creating a triangle with the anchor as seen in the green strap. This is called an "American Death Triangle". It amplifes the forces which increases the likeilhood of a catastrophic failure.
I'm completely new to the 4X4 world as I just recently bought a 2019 Hilux and your videos are very informative. I live in a country in which off roading is border line impossible but plan on moving soon to a country in which it is a lot more present. I'll probably be learning for 1-2 years before my first off road adventure so I definitely subscribed.

Great video Matt. There really was some interesting things going on in that vid. The setup screams lack of experience to me, as there are very few situations where you have to throw something together with no time to think about it, this was not one of those situations.
the setup of the vehicles and what matt mentioned about the channel points to an offroad club or something like this. so they have some experience,
but i am with you what is missing is knowlegde and common sense.
They do things a little differently in Chile by the looks of it...

The thing I don't understand, and something you didn't mention in the video, was why did the bystanders have to stand so close to the action? I know cameras can be deceiving, but it's almost as if they are standing in between the vehicles.
I think he criticised at least two blokes who were standing around in dangerous positions and adding nothing to the recovery? Why do they do it? Natural selection?

Hi all , we are raised in a country where from a young age o,h,and s is tought to us. We grow up watching mum and dad drive ,so we learn as young people about safety and improving situations . Granted not all learn though but when we look into the culture of people in different lands , human life is not always high on the agenda. I thought you raised another good discussion point and im glad you don't do hate videos. There's alot to be said for old mate standing with his head at the winch line , doesn't matter where on the planet you're from that is not a good idea!!!

That jeep is running large treps. Those aren't cheap tyres.
Thanks Matt. Not that I use wheel spacers butI do run high offset rims on the rear of my 76 series, I'm aware of the extra load on the rear shafts as such I do have to replace the bearings more often. Thanks for the content. Cheers
The 76 wheel bearing design is close to a full floating design so they can handle a bit more load. An excellent mod is to remove the axle seal and run the bearing in diff oil. Add an extra 100mls through the diff breather to account for this. Also flex the axle left and right before driving to ensure the oil is in the bearings. After that the oil will always find its way in and out of the bearings.

Having the recovery strap attached to both anchors in a triangle shape causes the forces on the anchors to be multiplied. Depending on the angle between the "legs" of the strap the force multiplication can be as much as 4 times the load. This causes the "compression" of the two attachment points to try and squeeze together creating a greater tendency to bend things and break software components.
Yes. Having the fleet angle correct is important.

A boy got stuck down the road from me and when I went to pull him out I told him go hook it up because it was knee deep mud and I wasn’t going in it. He claimed he could do it because he’s worked on a farm before. Wrapped my winch extension line around his hitch crossbar and hooked it back to itself. I was so far away I couldn’t see it so when I got him back to the road there was my wire rope with a crimp in it. What’s great is he got mad when I made him pay for it.

That's a great big American Death Triangle in the snatch strap at 1:44! In terms of climbing/abseiling and anchor building, this is a big no (and that's just with 100kg loads), as it multiplies the force through your anchor points, instead of sharing the load.
That is a messy situation waiting to happen a what we're you thinking mate moment if that winch line let go imagine everyone that is in the way they would have no chance of getting out of the way but definitely an eye opener wow😮

i couldnt believe what i saw. this is mind blowing
besides what you mentioned, i would lke to point out, that the rescue vehicle are positioned quite unlucky.
- the hoods of the rescue vehicles should be opened. in case the lines snapes they go right into the windshields, hopefully not into the cabin
- the winchlines should be secured with some bags
- the complete scene should be cleared from people.

Good points. I like your last point in that it highlights the grey of recovery. Little is black and white during recovery.
They need to exercise the cup of tea rule. That is, instead of rushing, making mistakes and doing damage. Step back relax, have a cup of tea. Do the recovery with a clear head.
Cool video. But that hilux chassis doesn't have recovery points. That strap is attached to leaf spring mount and wrap through them. You can buy aftermarket hook style recovery points or install a bullbar. But factory that chassis 78-96 don't have recovery points, im assuming cause leaf spring mounts come to the very front of chassis

Desarmaduria is a auto body parts supplier. Maybe they want to advertise that when you rub against a tree with no rear wheel that they can sell you the parts:)

Matt, I'm pretty sure the Jeep was not heavy enough to stay put. I do agree a doubled up line pull from one vehicle, but I think in this case the other vehicle would be needed as an anchor for the winching vehicle so it wouldn't slide.
John, the jeep or the hilux was heavy enough in a singular pull, not enough spool for a pulley type recovery
at this on pulley type recovery are dividing weight capacity not multiplying
It looks like they had the bridal wrapped through the front leaf springs at the mount. There's no recovery points.
Is that bridle actually attached to recovery points? It looks like they're wrapped around front leaf spring hangers.
lazy man's a frame tow rig, proper a frame tow rig tied to the steer pins

I watch some of those short videos from over seas and can't help but to shake my head. I'm no expert but I could see better locations for the winch vehicles to be set up that would have been closer and allowed for a double line pull nice and easy. Also no winch dampener blankets in sight and on the left hand side of the vehicle being recovered did they even have a recovery point or was that just wrapped around the suspension or something? It looks like it could be a leaf spring front end and just wrapped around the hanger. The strap as well does not look like your typical bridle strap, it looks longer and wrapped back on its self going off that left hand side. Possible a Snatch Strap or at least a winch extension strap.
After we’d filmed this we also worked out it was leaf spring front end and the strap was around the hanger.

@@MadMatt4WD given the dead weight of the broken rear axle there was only limited recovery options!!!!
@@jasonhowe1697 sure but the extra weight of that would not have been that high and with two winches they certainly had other options
@@MadMatt4WD there might of been other options that might off been used in 20/20 hindsight however factor in terrain and lack of rear axle the like limited options they were recovering a chopped 60/80/100 series ute conversion
if i was going to recover that it be a towball hitch tied chassis a-frame

Matt my first thought is they are using the front spring shackles on the front of the car Not rated recovery points (I am on a pc and zoomed in on the picture) The bow shackle connects to the outer side of the right spring shackle and onto the strap then the strap goes behind the left spring shackle and around to where the tow ropes are connected and then it looks like it goes around again behind the bow shackle and to the other side where you see it raised up higher than the first piece and I am guessing it goes back to where the tow ropes and hooks are ... maybe they did this to shorten the length of the strap. It does look like when you see old mate at the front I could see that the rear right wheel is missing and the vehicle is sliding on a log. Soo many people in the danger zone... th man in the red hat is making sure the lines are straight and taught.... I'm not sure but, that wheel in the back of the ute looks like it is put on inside out.. as in, the outside of the rim is closest to the brake rotor.....
After we filmed this we decided they had used the front shackles as well good pick up.

Correct. I rarely use them either. But that’s another story.
To me I Doubt they would have recovery points at bet tie downs, i think the used 2 on recovery because weight of 1 vehicle wasn't enough, the chopped 80-200 series most likely had a curb weight of 2-2.5 ton where as the jeep and hilux 1.5 ton to 2ton each
with a broken axle dead weight most likely be closer 3-4.5 ton
on a 5 ton cable wire you have 2.5 ton pulling strength in pulley base recovery
they would need 2 vehicles to act as ballast for the other ..
They may have set up for one winch then ran out of power so just attached the second

Oh you know these guys? I’d love to know more about why they did the recovery this way.
