punisher is about elliot smith, who is one of phoebe’s favourite artists, but she never met him because he died before she could. she said that a “punisher” in the music industry is a fan who doesn’t know when to stop talking and is over-eager with the artist they’re meeting. she thinks that if she ever met him, he would prob regard her as a punisher because of how much she loved him.
This album is probably my favorite album of 2020. Phoebe makes music that really makes you feel something viscerally. And I love her songwriting and how honest it is. DVD Menu- she introduces the melody from the end of “I Know The End” Garden Song- don’t know a ton about this song but I do know that the reference to the Huntington is The Huntington Library in Pasadena, California where she grew up. Fun fact: I also grew up/still live there. Kyoto- I think she said this song is about her dad and him trying to get into contact with her while she was in Kyoto ( at least the first verse is) yeah there’s like a handful of dad references like “he said you called on his birthday you were off by like 10 days but you get a few points for trying.” It seems to be about her tumultuous relationship with her dad. Punisher- this song is about Elliot smith and how she would be considered a punisher for how much she loves him and his music. He died pretty young so she never met him hence the line “what if I told you I feel like I know you but we never met?” Halloween- also don’t know too much about this song but the line “I hate living by the hospital” could also be another reference to Pasadena as their is a huge hospital down the street from where she went to school. Chinese Satellite- from what I understand this song is about not having any faith in anything. The lines “because I think when you’re gone it’s forever” “you know I hate to be alone, I want to be wrong” “swore I could feel you through the wall but that’s impossible” Moon Song- the line “you are sick and you’re married and you might be dying” is a reference to Conor Oberst I’m pretty sure? They do a lot of work together and are pretty good friends but I think this song is about him. Not sure though Savior Complex- don’t know too much about this song and what it’s about but I HIGHLY recommend checking out the music video for it. It was directed by phoebe waller-bridge ICU- this song is about her drummer Marshall Vore. They dated for a while and they’re broken up now but they still play together and produce together. Graceland Too- this song is about Julien Baker, another singer songwriter I would highly recommend you check out. Julien has dealt with addiction and mental illness and the first verse is about her leaving a psych ward “no longer a danger to herself or others” and the three voices at the end are phoebe bridgers, Lucy Dacus, and julien baker who are great friends and even have a band together called boygenius. Another great group to checkout. I Know The End- she has said this song is about the apocalypse and the end of things and she said that if the apocalypse were to happen, she’d drive up north. She had family in norther California I think? And she spent a lot of time there so she knows the drive really well. The outro verses kind of describe what she sees and feels and does during that drive. Yeah this album is a work of art and I love it so much. If you really like her, you should check out her debut album “Stranger In The Alps”. That’s another one of my all time favorite albums. Great video!
You’re reaction to I Know the End is exactly how I felt, I couldn’t help but tear up as it built. I just love that song bc it almost seems like a release with the scream cry at the end, especially with its placement at the end of a very emotional album! I loved ur reaction to it all!!
i think graceland too is about a friend who received treatment for mental health struggles, the day she leaves the treatment center, and can finally do whatever she wants but isn’t sure what she wants. and at the end, it’s the recurring theme of phoebe saying she would do anything in the world to help this friend and make them feel better. you should react to phoebe’s first album stranger in the alps!! it’s just as good!! ♥️♥️♥️
have you heard of julien baker ?? she sings the harmonies on graceland too and is an artist from memphis and talks about the actual place that was graceland too in interviews. she’s very open about her struggles mental health and addiction. phoebe had described it as a love song and i think more people should know who it’s (most likely) about
I got chills when you said the album has one foot in reality and one in a kind of dreaminess. That's absolutely fucking it! It's raw and real and yet ethereal as all hell at the same time. Wow.
Finally. A worthy reaction. Please check boygenius next! More people need to know about the Holy Trinity: Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus.
You should listen to Stranger in the Alps by Phoebe Bridgers. It is one of my favorite albums of all time!! I think you would really enjoy her music in this album
Punisher is one of my fav albums in 2020. Hope you react to Set My Heart on Fire Immediately by Perfume Genius. The production is likely the same with folklore and punisher, also their poetic lyrics!
Garden song is about her childhood and the “until it all went up in flames except the notches on the door frame” is referring to her childhood home that burned down
my favourite album of 2020 (sorry taylor swift, but you're a very close #2+3) i can't even pick my fav songs they are all so good! you should listen and react to her first album too, it's also incredible
Moon song is incredible, the motif of the dog with a bird in its mouth occurring again, with the whole the killer doesn't understand thing breaks me. Wanting to give someone your love and them being repulsed by it makes me sick
react to fiona apple’s fetch the bolt cutters. its another 2020 indie rock album, the first album after 10 years to receive a perfect 10 from pitchfork. its one of the most raw and lyrically hard hitting albums i’ve ever heard.
Her first album Stranger in the Alps is also a flawless masterpiece and will make you cry
Yeah I'll have to check out her earlier stuff I really enjoyed this album!

Wow ok that's not what I thought at all! Very interesting though ✨

lmao the way kyoto seems like a poppy fun song on first listen and then the lyrics hit and it's actually so fucking devastating... everything's fine

Thank you!! Yeah I love a final song that really feels like a real finale to the album!

YES YES THE ALBUM OF THE YEAR

I got chills when you said the album has one foot in reality and one in a kind of dreaminess. That's absolutely fucking it! It's raw and real and yet ethereal as all hell at the same time. Wow.
Graceland Too is about Julien Baker, who also sings on the song. It's a song about loving someone who maybe doesn't love themselves.
Finally. A worthy reaction. Please check boygenius next! More people need to know about the Holy Trinity: Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus.
Thank you!! And thanks for the suggestions!
If you liked this album I feel you would really enjoy Adrienne Lenker’s “Songs” album! Has a bit of a similar folksy feel

Punisher is one of my fav albums in 2020. Hope you react to Set My Heart on Fire Immediately by Perfume Genius. The production is likely the same with folklore and punisher, also their poetic lyrics!

Phoebe had rob moose help with this album and he also helped on Taylor’s folklore album lol
stay the way you are, you rock
Moon song is incredible, the motif of the dog with a bird in its mouth occurring again, with the whole the killer doesn't understand thing breaks me. Wanting to give someone your love and them being repulsed by it makes me sick
Phoebe is a mind boggling talent IMO. Punisher was my favourite album of 2020.

experimental though not sonically as accessible to those not used to it beforehand but PHENOMENAL
we’re still waiting for stranger in the alps 🥺
Oml please also react to Phoebe’s performance at Brooklyn Steel with Pitchfork. It’s an ethereal performance.
PLEASE react to ‘songs’ by adrianne Lenker!
Kyoto is also about Phoebe having impostor syndrome with her career and everyday life
Oh I see that makes sense!
Dude if you think this lovely album is sad listen to Stranger in the Alps. Make sure to grab tissues too.
I'll have to add it to my backlog!!
Kyoto is about her dad, at her concert before she sung it she gave a shoutout to shitty dads and wanting to kill them 😂
React to fka twigs💓
could you react to k-12 by melanie maerinez?
It's on my list!
@@Luscent yesss i'm sure you'll love it
