The opening is a Reversed Ruy Lopez, Smyslov (4...g6) defence. Although 5.d4 exd4 6.Bg5 would give White the advantage, here Carlsen has also a pawn on c4 (by the virtue of being the White player). So that wouldn't work.

Unbelievable how Carlsen talks at the end like he didn't play that well, but I certainly wouldn't have been able to pull off a win like this against Mareco.
I see that Magnus is using the opening that I use online. Should be interesting. I also wanted to ask at 4:46 in the video, he gets e5 which forces the knight to move away but it also opened up the diagonal for the bishop and an attack on the b7 pawn which seems to be free to take. Is there any reason not to take it?
It's not a great pawn for black and he doesn't want to open a file to allow counterplay I think, but I agree with you that taking the pawn does seem pretty good. :)
No need to open up his King after black takes on h3. Mainly though his light square bishop is a very powerful piece across that diagonal and it turned into a monster on e4 which effectively won him the game. Thanks for the lesson Magnus.
cocacola fergus after bishop takes c3, pawn takes, and then knight takes e4, queen e2 will attack the knight which has to move, thereby winning back e5 while developing the queen with check
Because it doesn't acheibe anything. There is an old chess saying (one of many) "to take is a mistake" if it doesn't improve your position or give you an advantage, its best to leave it alone. Having the bishop pair positioned like that cuts right through the board. Essentially the pawn is stuck there. If mareco tries to move that pawn without moving the rook, he loses the rook. Taking the pawn would lose tempo and wastes a move. The pawn poses no threat in that space, taking doesn't give any advantage and the bishop has no follow up moves/no real way to continue the attack. Also the king is on the other side of the board so attacking that side doesnt make sense
