That zugzwang ending was beautiful 😍 I had to pause the video and check all the pieces, black actually just loses with every legal move. Obv it took Magnus half a second to notice that 😂😂
What i like about this is Magnus makes the plan g3, h4 with the idea of a kingside attack, but then when is opponent later plays f5, he is able to re-evaluate everything, just win a pawn and then build a queenside advantage with a new plan
"this is what I hoped he wouldn't do" Not because its a good move and makes the game harder, but because it makes it too easy seeing 9 million moves ahead simply amazing to watch. Love this.

I didn't care too much the Zugzwang final as it may happen sometimes by coincidence but what affects me is that light square bishop of black in a6. As an amatour player i would care a lot about it and would annoy me a lot a powerful piece there and would try to find a solution. But Magnus simply ignores it and going for his own plan on king side which in this case that bishop is out of play. Although a while later that bishop takes a role in a play but not in a very significant way. As a result, i think the confidence is one of the key characteristics of GMs which most of the amateur players doesn't have.
The world champion does an excellent job expressing his conceptual strategic thinking. What's scary brainwork is while talking he's calculating lines. I wouldn't be surprised if he could give ten minutes or more commentary about any position in the game, with lines and off the cuff. I would need a week to chew over his comments. But I've only been playing at a club level for forty years. These kids today I hope they appreciate how fortunate those of us interested in the art and craft of chess are to listen to GM MC. Peace.
It's crazy how fast he analyses the position, I can see the ones where its a 1 or two move combo on occasion, but he's looking like 5 moves ahead on every single move
amazing how he knew instantly that was a zugzwang and that there was only one legal move. Must think differently, instead of focusing on one line of attack he is considering the possibility of every single piece. A normal chess player is playing a violin and he is conducting an orchestra.

Magnus explains in the video. After Qxh6+, Kg8 is forced, which leads to Qxe6+, forcing Kh8 or worse, then Bxf5, with black having a very weak pawn on d5. So Magnus takes 4 pawns for one bishop, so he's up in material and has a huge pawn imbalance in his favor
This is why I stopped playing the French years ago. Painfully hard to generate winning chances black gets virtually nothing from the opening, white has an easy game from the start.
@@gardenvariety9957 Lol not to worry I honestly don't remember a game in the Alekhine where I was not in trouble as white. I would use that as an excuse if I were in your situation.
Magnus explains in the video that black would lose too many pawns. If you play it out, it leads to black losing 4+ pawns for the bishop with a very exposed King and Magnus' pieces very active on that side of the board. Even if he didn't win immediately, he would've been able to convert that pawn imbalance into a win.
"The plan is to simply put something on g5 and checkmate him"...20 moves later wins with a knight to g5. What a legend
