Do you think they spend 99% of their chess studies on memorization for fun even though it doesn't do anything? It takes like 2 weeks tops to learn the various tactics and positional concepts. After that you need to get straight to memorizing openings and learning the plans and structures. This all requires pure memory. Of course you have to get on the board to execute the fine details but you review your games by looking back at all the data you need to memorize and further reinforce it. Chess is memorization. Nobody is good at chess without memorizing a ton of information.

Carlsen still beats the best blitz players but it doesn't look like this. He doesn't seem a god/ alien, he is just a bit better than, say, Nakamura or Caruana.
