That was a perfect review. I’ve played the game for 156 hours (still counting) and that was exactly my experience as a JRPG and DQ fan. It’s an incredible game. I love the story, the graphics, the battle system and the whole DQness of it. But more often than not I find myself playing with a low volume. I can only imagine how the game would have been even better if we had gotten a soundtrack worth it. As you said DQ VIII was a magical experience. I love the music as much as I love the game. When the VIII intro appeared in the video, I got goosebumps. You can just feel the difference. XI is an improvement on many things from VIII but the music isn’t one of them. Hopefully they will get that right on XII. Thanks for the video man!
What I love the about Dragon Quest is that every town/country/point in time has its own culture or problem to solve. There's just so many things that make each moment of the game memorable
Looking forward to finally purchasing and playing my first Dragon Quest game. I've played a lot of JRPG's but I've never had the opportunity to play one of the games in this franchise... until now!
Been a HUGE Jrpg fan all my life, but do like the RPG as well and some times better depending on the game. Along with crazy humor games, open world, and story or strong narritive games. Just now hearing from the channel due to a friend so subbing and looking forward to your take on so many gems (cold steel for example0 making its why to the west ps4 shores this year). I wish DQ10 would come out here I would sub for life (it is their mmo) but you can play alone or with people. (you can use offline player characters among a pool for AI help if you suffer from anxiety or prefer solo play. THIS game just edged out DQ8 as my second favorite DQ game now of all time. It is just a love letter to the jrpg fan in my view. Thanks for the time this took to script, edit and upload. Just wish you had 15 to 25k subs so you would make more $ for this type of quality (videos)
From a creative standpoint, this game is honestly one of the best jrpgs of this era. An rpg that is more rooted from classical japanese rpgs with also a sence of scale and scope that is not very easy to accomplish this day and age with modern CG. So the developers really pushed this game to its limits.
I've played as many Dragon Quest games as I could, all the way from the VERY FIRST one for the original Nintendo Entertainment System. With that in mind, I can honestly say this is probably my favourite one. It's just so vibrant and wonderful from top to bottom.
It has so many terrible flaws though... It's far inferior to 8 in just about every way. There is not a single aspect of this game that is actually better than Dragon Quest 8. Not the gameplay, not the music, the characters, the plot, the combat, the skills, nothing.
@@DemonEyeHelix That is your opinion. I can tell you right now that I love 8 very much as well -- in fact, but it's the game that got me back into DQ after years.
@@not2shabby It's not my opinion. Through an unbiased comparison between DQ8 and DQ11, 8 is better in every way. There is not a single aspect where 11 surpasses 8.
@@not2shabby Unbiased comparison... As in, evaluated and rated without bias based on each aspect of each game. Dragon Quest 8 is a universally accepted 10/10 and Dragon Quest 11 falls short of that in every possible category. It is objectively worse as a game with no opinion or bias whatsoever. Argueing against that is your own opinion and you're entitled to that, even though it's objectively wrong.
I thought i was first for a second when i saw the view count, I can't beleive a video this well made has 500 views, this is like ign, gamexplain level stuff. Keep at it, you're definitely gonna blow up dude!
My friend and I played this game together and it was amazinnggggggggg. The storyline had us both so emerged and loved upgrading weapons and forging new ones. The party’s storylines were so cute and made me fall in love with almost all of the characters. Obsessed w Erik but wish he was more powerful
Erik is the most broken character in the game capable of literally instant killing the final boss at level 60 on the second turn. (If you haven't finished the game yet, you do the final boss fight around level 60's.) The storyline is bland, predictable, full of filler and lazy writing. Half of the plot events are just "The Luminary's hand glows, and by the power of bullshit (plot armor) things magically work out for him) Of your 8 character party, 5 of the 7 characters that join your hero only join because he was born royalty/the chosen one and don't have any personal reason for accompanying him. Since your comment spoke so highly of this game, I'm assuming you've never played Dragon Quest 8. It's for Playstation 2 and re-released on Nintendo 3DS and it's the perfect Dragon Quest game. It's tied with 3 other games for the best RPG ever made with bias given towards DQ8 if scores could go beyond a perfect rating. Other 3 games for reference were Dragon warrior 3 (Dragon quest's original name in the east), Final Fantasy 7, and Final Fantasy 10.
With how FF series has become since ff13, DQ has become my favorite series. There is just something with DQ that attracts me to these games. They kinda heal my soul
What a great review. I just finished this game and I got fucked up. I didn't expect coming through with an emotional rollercoaster and I certainly didn't expect to leave Act 2 so depressed. Playing Act 3 just didn't feel right.
for some reason whilst never being a jrpg fan or even knowing what that was, my mum (again someone with no understanding of jrpgs or even games) somehow gave me dragon quest 9 on the ds lite for christmas, and idk why but i loved that game, and to this day (about 6 years later i think) i havent completed it, mainly because i cant beat the final boss but also because i dont want it to be over. recentyl i got a switch and am waiting to play this game, i just hope it captures whatever dq9 did, it looks amazing
Personally i think the criticisms about the quality of the actual compositions are a bit exaggerated.Sure they don't even come close to those of DQVIII (something that becomes even more obvious when the older compositions appear in the game) but they get the job done and they are doing a fine job setting the mood of the game within the boundaries and style of DQ.There are other small details that bothered me more like some inconsistencies in jumping or that not all equipment changed your appearance but these are nothing compared to the things the game did right. It's easily my GOTY and a game belonging to a far more innocent age free from all the greedy trends of modern gaming.
I do not find it exaggerated, in comparison to many RPG games, this is among the worst music I have heard, there isn't a single track I need to hear ever again. Honestly, it is the only main criticism to a very excellent game, and even then it isn't a big deal.
@@darkhorse744 Omfg dude we get it Sugiyama's political views are shit. But this has nothing to do with his music. Tired of people bringing this up. I personally don't give a fuck in the slightest about his political views. I have no reason to care about a 87 year old's political views at all. I never even met the guy why the fuck should I care about what he thinks now? LOL I'll always love the music he produces despite him being an asshole
The problem is in this case you really can’t. A lot of the problems with DQXI’s music stem from him being a not-so-Great person. The midi quality comes from his desire to make money off of orchestral remixes. It’s because he’s a douchebag that the sound quality. I actually like quite a few of the new compositions in this game. It just pisses me off when everyone else who worked on this game obviously put in a large amount of love and care into making it the best that it can be, and he uses people’s love of the series as a method make more money off of them by purposefully putting low quality midis in the main game. I just wish that he cared enough about these games to give them the music quality that they deserve.
That is so good to hear, Im so excited! Been keeping up with the news of the Switch version and I really feel like Im going to love it. Been spoiled a lil bit but for the most part im still in the clear. Just need to be a patient and cautious till its finally here.
I wish I waited. I got it for ps4 and I can’t get that into it. I use my switch in portable mode all the time so this game would have been perfect, but everyone was raving about it so much I couldn’t wait and now I never play it because I only really play my switch these days.

I’ve recently started playing this (not much of a turn based JRPG gamer) and DAMN, this game has its hooks in me deep. This is a great review and the random memes/music made this fun to watch. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to play a lovely game like this.
😑😪😪The problem is not the quality of the music!! Stop following everyone else. Thr REAL PROBLEM is how you only hear like 4-5 songs throughout a 200hr game....
That's still a problem with sugiyama, well, as well as the game direction if they only wanted to use 5 tracks, but it all relates Like, the fact they're still relying on this guy despite him being 88 is a little funny to me cuz, even by the ps2 era, nobuo uematsu was already getting help from masashi hamauzu and Yoko shimomura With other artists allowed to make music under the FF banner as well, like Keichi Okabe But yeah, playing it on the switch, the music has been way less a problem for me than it has others, so far having gone 20 hours in with basically a full day playing it (global crisis and all things considered)
Everyone: the music is the worst part of the game. Me: the post game content sucks. It literally destroys everything the main game worked so hard to accomplish
Sam Marshall “To lose time is to lose much” the game tells you right there. I prefer the endgame to a traditional NewGame+ which is basically what it is. You have the choice to go back, you don’t have to, and the game warns you 3 different times 2 of which all 6 of the party members tell you not to. If you don’t like how it ends your ending can just be the one where the luminary stays in the future. Plus if you went through and completed everyone’s mini storyline in the past then you’ll see some of the games best and most emotional content
While I would agree DQ8's soundtrack is by far the best the series has ever had, I don't think DQ11's compositions are getting a fair shake on the quality of the written music itself. I personally found all the tracks in this game to be suitable at worst, and astonishingly great at best. It's a shame DQ11 wasn't able to get the same treatment DQ8 had with the fully orchestrated soundtrack in the game itself, but I don't find the quality of the MIDIs to be so inferior that it brings the game down. Some of the tracks are certainly quirkier than others (such as the one you pointed out specifically in your video), but I don't think the song itself is bad at all. It feels appropriately fun and bouncy for the moments that it is used, usually while fighting an equally quirky enemy in battle. It's a shame the composer is so stingy with compositions made specifically for this particular product, but maybe we can hope that he'll bend on that stance and that either the Switch version will include the fully orchestrated tracks or that the PS4/PC versions will eventually get an update that includes it as an audio option you can toggle between. Either way, I didn't find the MIDI tracks to be nearly as offensive as some of the reviews I've been seeing have been claiming. Regardless, thanks for reviewing the game! More people need to play it in the West, without question.
I just beat the game and its a 9/10 one of the best monster fighter beside Pokemon and Digimon. Wow if your hesitant don't be I put around 250 hours (Hard mode) and had a blast every second. Def get your money worth with a classic Western RPG that simple yet very deep and satisfying. It's open world but has a clear direction on every location so you won't feel overwhelm with too many thing to do. The story just keep getting better and better AND BETTER my god. There so much content even after you beat the game there still the post game which is amazing. I smiled at the end cuz it was truely a fun adventure. 9/10 and I never played a Dragon quest game but this is a perfect starting point to be a HUGE FAN. LOVE THE GAME 💘
You don't find Hard to be too easy? I'm just at the luminary purging the darkness and bringing light back, I'm sure I have along ways to go but it seems too easy so far.
@@DrAtomics I find regular mode super easy and Hard mode to be normal how it's meant to be played. So I understand what you mean but trust me there still alot left

😂 the Ni No Kuni II shade is real!! That meme was priceless, that’s exactly how I felt. Oh man, I held off on getting DQ XI cause I wanted to finish Ni No Kuni II first and focus on western games for the fall, like RDR2. The former was a great disappointment. Not a bad game, I had fun with it, but it was no comparison to the love affair I had with its predecessor, which has a phenomenal, highly memorable, and surprising story. It’s sequel’s story, I either can’t sum up at all, or could sum up in one lame sentence. Just really dull. And for all it’s technically impressive moments and presentation......... DQ XI comes along and made it look like it was some rushed game. So what that makes FF XV.... not a game at all... worse? DQ XI, it took my some weeks and dozen or two hours to get really into it, but once the core 7 party is formed, and their identities made clear, the game took off like a rocket of perfection. Now I’ve put in 200 hrs and have the Platinum trophy, and I’m eager to do it all again on Switch!!!
Great review! I'm playing this for the first time and while it's awesome I agree that the soundtrack isn't as good, I play Persona and Xenoblade 3 too, both have awesome soundtracks
Honestly I'm so excited for what they will do with DQ12, they have a real opportunity to do something special now that America for some reason remembers that DQ exists
let's hope it does very well on the switch. The sales of the ps4/pc versions are low in the west. And square said that if the sales are low, no more DQ in the west.
I bought this game the day it came out and never got the chance to play it. With everything going on in the world and not able to work I'm finally going to give it that chance. The original on the NES takes me back to my childhood of fighting slimes and golden monsters. I cannot wait to experience this!
Great review, really appreciate the work and love you put into your videos. I'll agree that the music could be improved but for the most part it hasn't really bothered me so far (about 75 hours in), guess I just have a soft spot for the retro sound. Great game so far, but still I'd honestly prefer a new but 16 bit DS style DQ game if I could have it. 3D is neat and all but I grew up on NES so I could be happy with top down 2D forever. One thing this review has excited me about is DQ VIII as I've owned it for years and actually never even put it in the PS2!?!?! Just never made time I guess. Well now I am motivated, so thanks for that!! Keep up the great work!
Finished Act 2 about a week ago. You made me cringe when you said I have another 20-30 hours to go to beat the true ‘true’ ending. I’ve been playing these since the original Dragon Quest on the NES. Absolutely love them. Laughing at your comment of Sylvando’s umm... Sylvondoness. He alone makes this game worth it.
@@JRPGCentral Indeed it does have the symphonic soundtrack and has extra content not available elsewhere (including PC). Switch is the definitive, ultimate version beating out the rest, even the (not so) almighty PC.

I've played a ton of Dragon Quest games in my day, as many as most Americans were able to back in the day especially. I played 7 and 8 the most when they first released, and I played the shit out of Dragon Warrior Monsters. I was more into that than Pokemon for a long time. Unfortunately the DS sequels werent that great for DWM, but it gave me much more love for the monsters of the DQ universe. I am waiting for this game to go on sale, i was stupid and didnt buy it during the xmas sale. Oh well, it's probably worth $60, those fully 3D monsters looked fantastic! Great video!
Fantastic review, and excellently worded criticisms as well. This just happened to come up in my recommended and it was nice to listen to while sick and bedridden lol. It’s fair to say you earned a sub. Also, I’m glad you enjoyed the music mod.
11:30 YEAH, like the original Final Fantasy XII score and The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, I still can't believe these games had sample-build sscores and they sound amazing!
The game was very fun, but too linear. Would have appreciated more wandering. And some random battles. The level of suspense you feel when you might be almost dead is thrilling and I feel like I was never in danger on outside of major battles.
I agree. I think the game could have benefited from not having the bright pink "go here next" icon. The world isn't really that big and the locations to explore on the world map are pretty minimal. Without any direction, it wouldn't take long to stumble across the next story point.
I doubt it would happen, but I'd love it if they redid Dragon Quest 8 with the engine and graphics used for Dragon Quest 11 while including the improvements and extra content that was released on the 3DS version. Bring all that to the PS4 and I think it'd sell quite well. Though this is probably just a pipe dream, it'd still be cool if it happened!
And it would be a pretty cheap project compared to most. Just need to recreate the assets and maybe tweak some things. The engine, characters, story, music...it’s all already made. Make it happen Square!
I fully agree! DQ8 was the first DQ game I had ever played, I loved it! I too think it'd be a cheap project and given that we most likely won't get a full sequel again for a while, it'd do them good to keep the interest for it alive by doing something like that for home consoles.
A mammoth review - all your hours of editing truly paid off. This could pass off as a review video for any of the large gaming review companies. Edited to perfection, and great writing too! I'm a good 65hrs into the game, getting to the point where things are wrapping up, and honestly I don't want it to end. It's perfection. Hands down my personal GOTY. :)
I'm playing tales of beseria after finishing Ni no kuni 2 the character quality is night and day for your party ni no was fun but they did little to make me care about anyone.
Finished last night with 147 hrs. I loved every minute (apart from the time we had to rediscover the map points). Regarding the music, I played the entire game with music on 20% volume so I never realized it was crappy midi. Funny. I never had a problem with the music at all.

Thanks for the review! Everyone who reviews DQ are always so enthusiastic that it's made me decide to get the game to see what I'm missing!
From a creative standpoint, this game is honestly one of the best jrpgs of this era. An rpg that is more rooted from classical japanese rpgs with also a sence of scale and scope that is not very easy to accomplish this day and age with modern CG. So the developers really pushed this game to its limits.
funny, i only just started Definitive Edition, and had no idea about the music issues of the original. love the music so far :)
@@DemonEyeHelix 'One game is better than another game' is in itself an opinion.
Dragon Quest 8 was my jam. I spent sooo much time in that game, and then the whole Dragon blood end game stuff. Amazing.
I thought i was first for a second when i saw the view count, I can't beleive a video this well made has 500 views, this is like ign, gamexplain level stuff. Keep at it, you're definitely gonna blow up dude!
Thank you so much! That means the world.😭
My friend and I played this game together and it was amazinnggggggggg.
(If you haven't finished the game yet, you do the final boss fight around level 60's.)
The storyline is bland, predictable, full of filler and lazy writing. Half of the plot events are just "The Luminary's hand glows, and by the power of bullshit (plot armor) things magically work out for him)
Of your 8 character party, 5 of the 7 characters that join your hero only join because he was born royalty/the chosen one and don't have any personal reason for accompanying him.
"If he doesn't say Dragon Warrior once through this video I'm gonna be pissed."

"Alright." *Clicks like*
Arasonyth right as i read this he said it lol
I was about to report him lol
With how FF series has become since ff13, DQ has become my favorite series. There is just something with DQ that attracts me to these games. They kinda heal my soul
tbh I absolutely LOVE all the music in dq11. even that weird one.
What a great review. I just finished this game and I got fucked up.
I didn't expect coming through with an emotional rollercoaster and I certainly didn't expect to leave Act 2 so depressed. Playing Act 3 just didn't feel right.
Dragon quest 8 really was beautiful. That's the game that got me into the series.
for some reason whilst never being a jrpg fan or even knowing what that was, my mum (again someone with no understanding of jrpgs or even games) somehow gave me dragon quest 9 on the ds lite for christmas, and idk why but i loved that game, and to this day (about 6 years later i think) i havent completed it, mainly because i cant beat the final boss but also because i dont want it to be over. recentyl i got a switch and am waiting to play this game, i just hope it captures whatever dq9 did, it looks amazing
It's easily my GOTY and a game belonging to a far more innocent age free from all the greedy trends of modern gaming.
ua-cam.com/video/xfdFU3O3nf8/v-deo.html You probably have no idea how bad Sugiyama is.
LOL
I'll always love the music he produces despite him being an asshole
@@darkhorse744 Seperate the art from the artist. Just because you may disagree with his views doesn't mean his music is shit.
I just wish that he cared enough about these games to give them the music quality that they deserve.
dragonquest was and still is a nearly perfect rpg, that wont change, its brilliant
Still holding out for the switch version... :(
The game is by far worth the wait. It's the first game I've enjoyed this much in probably half a decade
If you really wanted to play this game you would have already I can't stand you switch bitches I hope your switch cracks and burns in dock mode
@@JoeMama-yd1ve stop fucking lying switch bitch if you didn't like it on the PS4 there's no way in hell you'll like it on the switch besides this game is for high iq individuals not you window licking Flint river water drinking mouth breathers
Great review and I couldn't agree more about the music.
Great review, man. That Limp Bizkit bit was awesome. 😄
I never tried DQ because I didn’t really like Toriyama’s style as a kid (not a fan of dragon balls at all), I feel bad now, I’ll give this one a try! Thank you for such a convincing video man.
wow, i liked the games music, even the one you showed, for a comical fight it's perfect
That's still a problem with sugiyama, well, as well as the game direction if they only wanted to use 5 tracks, but it all relates
Like, the fact they're still relying on this guy despite him being 88 is a little funny to me cuz, even by the ps2 era, nobuo uematsu was already getting help from masashi hamauzu and Yoko shimomura
With other artists allowed to make music under the FF banner as well, like Keichi Okabe
But yeah, playing it on the switch, the music has been way less a problem for me than it has others, so far having gone 20 hours in with basically a full day playing it (global crisis and all things considered)
The music is garbage! it is so bland and not memorable at all. Copare that to VIII and it will blow you away.
This game is amazing, been chipping away at the last few months. Just super simple to get into, great music, visuals, story.
At least the Switch version is gonna be amazing on every level..
More people need to play it in the West, without question.
best rpg of the year imho
wholeheartedly agree with you
Persona 5 says hi
Oh yeah Watermelon They came out in different years though
@@_KingofKingss no, dragon quest xi came out in the US in 2018
AmericanNerdLife this guy gets it
This was my first DQ and i basically played it after FF16. Enjoyed this much more than 16
the music is charming and I enjoy it
I agree.
The music actually did sound good to me lol
Watching this now that I know they're fixing the soundtrack in the Switch version. So excited to pick it up and play it through for the first time.
I wish the 3ds version came out in the west
I was gonna buy a Japanese 3ds for it. Now I'm on the fence because there's other games I want and I have the PS4 version.
The 3DS version is being included with the Switch version. You can swap between the two graphic sets.
@@shuboy05 Exactly. The 3DS version is no longer the supreme version (beats crappy PC version), the Switch version will now be the best. The superior, definitive edition!
Hailey Matthews ok lol, pc > nintendo garbage with low resolution and texture quality

NINOKUNI 2 is AMAZING GAME !!!!
Great review! I'm playing this for the first time and while it's awesome I agree that the soundtrack isn't as good, I play Persona and Xenoblade 3 too, both have awesome soundtracks
I'm a huge DQMJ fan but I've never played the nornal DQ games i like how it looks it reminds me of baten kaitos and final fantasy
SmgSniper baten kaitos was great. Never finished it though lol
Honestly I'm so excited for what they will do with DQ12, they have a real opportunity to do something special now that America for some reason remembers that DQ exists
This game was amazing. Great review
Great review. I have to continue playing this game. Probably after I finish Secret of Mana.
let's hope it does very well on the switch.
Man they need to remaster dragon quest IX for the switch :( if you know you know!
yeah that game was my childhood
Thanks for the great review! You have convinced me to pick up this game which I was previously on the fence about.
Cheers, Joe
Thanks Joe! Hope you enjoy the game.
and then there is Pokémon S&S with it's "new, improved models and animations"
Thank you man! If only we got that 3DS version here..
Hope you enjoy VIII as much as I did!
I pre ordered the switch version...
Fingers crossed
glorbo jibbins best game i’ve played
That music is dire, yeah. Very pleased with the sound on the Switch demo so far.
Dragon Quest 9 is the perfect DQ Game in my opinion. I wish they would remake it or follow it’s formula more.
Honestly, I don't know that I could have played the game WITHOUT that orchestra mod lol.
One of the aspect that define jrpg is the music... and yeah, i agree with you about music...
I can’t wait for the switch version comes out 😊
Me either! I'm hoping it has the symphonic soundtrack as a bonus..
When?
@@JRPGCentral Indeed it does have the symphonic soundtrack and has extra content not available elsewhere (including PC). Switch is the definitive, ultimate version beating out the rest, even the (not so) almighty PC.
great video mate, waiting to play the switch version of the game (you helped me a lot deciding if I should play it and now I definetely will) I played DQ IX on Nintendo DS some years ago and it was my favoutite game since then, I heard that the switch version will contain japanese voice acting as well so I definetely will get my hands on this amazing title
Good thing the switch version will have better orchestrated music.
First Time playing DQ game. Blown Away! Incredible! Grinded out the plat! Visuals stole my heart!❤
If DQ8 didn't exist this would be the perfect DQ.
Amen.
But if 8 didn't exist then there's a probability that 11 would never have been made at all
They are equal to me.
DQ 8 is still one of my favorites of all time.
Lampshades, Soap & Beyond It is superior to VIII in every aspect.
This is better than Dq8, sorry.
The music while running around puts me to sleep i can't tell how many time it has put me to sleep lol i have to play it on the weekends
Fantastic review, and excellently worded criticisms as well. This just happened to come up in my recommended and it was nice to listen to while sick and bedridden lol. It’s fair to say you earned a sub. Also, I’m glad you enjoyed the music mod.
Thank you so much! I hope you get to feeling better.
Literally the only game I've purchased in the last 2 years that wasn't on sale for -40% or more
And I would gladly spend the money again. So good
I just bought this game on Steam last week, it was on sale for 50% off
Picked it up from offer up for 16 bucks. What a steal
11:30 YEAH, like the original Final Fantasy XII score and The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, I still can't believe these games had sample-build sscores and they sound amazing!
So far i know, skyward sword was the first zelda game with orchestrated music, maybe you mean another one?
The game was very fun, but too linear. Would have appreciated more wandering. And some random battles. The level of suspense you feel when you might be almost dead is thrilling and I feel like I was never in danger on outside of major battles.
I agree. I think the game could have benefited from not having the bright pink "go here next" icon. The world isn't really that big and the locations to explore on the world map are pretty minimal. Without any direction, it wouldn't take long to stumble across the next story point.
Music didn't really bug me that much, I tune it out half the time anyway. It does lend a retro feel.
You really thought the bros from ni no kuni 2 were forgettable? I must have played a different game
Great review !! Love the inserts and lore info you added really made the review enjoyable.
Thank you!! That means a lot. I try my best to separate my reviews from others you can find by injecting little bits of myself into it.
I want this SO badly. This is me really reaching here, but I tell myself that the Trodain outfit being in the game is Square’s way of hinting at it..
It would be a really awesome way for them to keep the western audience interested in the franchise.
Man I wish dragon warrior 8 was my first dq game I loved it
A mammoth review - all your hours of editing truly paid off. This could pass off as a review video for any of the large gaming review companies.
