0:00 intro
My new favorite thing is Connor size comparison-ing every animal to his boss
😂
"i want to study that slime" "OK WELL IT'S THEIRS" maya's rightful indignation always gets me
As someone who teaches 3-5 yr olds, you could most definitely teach a 3 year old how to strike a match and toast a marshmallow. But I don’t think they have the dexterity to do it well or safely 😂
Yea Maya is massively underestimated the intelligence of a 3 year old
I think most 3 year olds would not be able to toast a marshmallow with a match and with direction
I think we forget how much 3 year olds are learning about the world. They're learning languages and puzzles and how to walk and feed themselves. A lot of being a "Dumb" baby comes down to not having fine motor control yet, so if you have an animal with the same intelligence but more physical capability it's going to look quite different
i agree that the dexterity is probably their biggest issue. When i worked with kids watching them hold scissors was always an internal battle of me wanting to just do it for them lol
Nah yeah her response kinda ignorant dawg lol, I see a 3 yr old being able to learn these typa stuff
Connor’s cat being the third cohost makes me so happy
On the finding Nemo part - it takes 6 months for a male to transform into a female, and 2 years for a clownfish to mature - because Nemo was still very young in the movie, it is very possible it just hasn’t been the full 6 months and marlin had begun to transform but just didn’t finish the transition
Marlin is such a trans name, too. Good for her. 🏳️⚧️
Marlin is a trans icon 🏳️⚧️
I didn't expect ace rep, so cool! watch my asexual ace join the farmer ant commune
Do you follow our ace queen; Red from OSP?
I love that they keep using Maya as a size reference for different animals XD
That IS pretty hilarious and adorable.
Y'all should try to get hank green on one episode and have him present two animals
Guests could be cool
ayy world's gayest!
that’s just prezoh
World's slayest
Connor breaking the spray bottle is a classic
So fast!
To be clear, every ant colony has a queen and asexual female workers, not just leafcutter ants.
Mostly. Some have female workers that are capable of becoming reproductive if the current reproductive worker dies. These are called "gamergates" but pronounced "gam-ergate"
Maya will you please tell Claire I said "pspspspspsp" thanks. Love the pod. Shout out to Connor and all the other Alveus staff BTS that make this happen.
From what little research I’ve done the queen of a mature leaf cutter ant colony lays an average of 20 eggs per minute, totaling 28,800 eggs per day, or 10,512,000 every year :)
I Like that this wasn’t just male/male female/female relationships in the animal kingdom but a lot more than that!
I would really love a World's Smartest, where you take the smartest animal in each category like smartest arthropod, fish, bird etc.
would a dolphin be in the mammal category or fish
@@davio8035 Dolphins are mammals so mammals ig
Any time someone says "iT's SiMpLe BiOLoGy" as evidence for homophobia/ transphobia I'm sending them this 🎀✨
As a biology fan im soo upset when someone presents this argument like okay we get it ur level of knowledge stops in middle school, so now im sending this too! 😁
Also, humans are animals, so since we have the ability to feel attracted to the same gender that means homosexuality is natural
The reality is that, sexuality is not something strict in animal kingdom. Intercourse is one of many forms of comunications, hierarchy building or just plesure seeking. Animals do not have a set sexuality like us humans (or at least we as a specie are much more unchanging when it comes to growing out of or into some other sexuality) thus they are not gay or striaght, they are themselvs because an animal dose not care about sexuality because it doesn't matter to them. But must importnant the argument of "it's simple biology" should not be ignored. In animal kingdom there are little to none morality rules. Thus rape, abuse, pedohilia (of instance in Bonobos) are "natural". However in humans those things are not natural, we feel disgust and anger when we hear of the these events. Saying that we should view nature as a set course of action for "natural" behavior of ourselfs is stupid. We are our own specie and we should seek a natural life for us (if we even have one).
They are born hermaphrodite (talking bout the slugs) We are not..
i'm here to save you so trust me, don't even. you're just gonna hear "but we have a conscience, animals don't"
The gayest animal in the world is reading this right now
You read it first
prezoh?

Correct

When Connor explained the yellow lizard, my brain immediately went "cool, femboy lizards" and kinda got stuck on that.
New fave podcast, I love watching you guys geek out about animals and learning new things! Also Happy Pride y'all!
happy pride to everyone (incluiding our animal friends)
I love this podcast thank you Maya and Connor!!! As other commenters have mentioned, I think a 3yr old with fully developed dexterity skills could absolutely learn to light a match. Less about the brain, more about the muscles. Super fun to listen to!
yyyyyaaaayyy, now I have podcasts to fulfill my parasocial urge 4 days in a row. "Fear and" on Mondays, "Whine about it" on Tuesdays on Patreon, "Whine about it" bonus ep. on Patreon on Wednesdays and this awesomeness of a podcast on Thursdays.
saw this on patreon but rewatching for the algo
A queen ant’s lifespan is about 15 years. So if she has 150 million offspring in her lifetime, it is about 20 a minute. You’re welcome Connor 😂.
Just a side note about what Conor was saying about the slug slime, and studying it to use for glue and other items. They are doing something similar with internal vaginal and cervix muscles in people. A lot of the muscles used during childbirth have some of the fastest regrowing/healing properties, as well as elasticity (literally stretching to fit a whole baby through). Just thought it was interesting, that two seemingly organic things can have some properties we want in inorganic or man-made sbustances
Both of you are everything that is great about this planet. This has become my favorite podcast by far.
I would just like to say there are many toddlers that can and have lit fires with a match. I work in childcare, and just the other day, a mum called saying she caught one of her kids lighting paper on fire with matches theyre almost 4 (they have a wood fireplace at home, they didnt have to "teach" her how to strike a match kids are very observent). All kids develop differently, and some can really baffle you with their intelligence at such a young age 😂
P.S. when i do lunch cover for the girls in the nursery (0-2yo), there are babys that can tell me what items belong to what baby if I'm not sure. They understand and are always learning 😂 ill say again, do not underestimate their potential intelligence 😂
'' I can't believe I'm friends with you '' is a sentence I have said to my best friends SO MUCH hahaha!
6 episodes already, time going by so fast
This podcast is awesome! Its great to hear knowledgeable and passionate people talk about biology and nature
I’m so proud of my self for knowing the bonobos fact 😭 the fact it’s from my hyper fixation of the planet of the apes,,, that series fire tho 🙏
This podcast is seriously so interesting and its been such a great listen
I freaking love this podcast, I kinda hate that I found it early because I can't binge hours of it anymore but have to wait for episodes which is something I'm just learning to cope with. Anygays, happy pride!
Yassss the queen ant takes a part of the fungi and they store it in a cavity in their mouth and they mate with a bunch of ants from their original nest, then they go away to form a new colony where they lay the eggs and can plant the fungi!!! It’s a really cool symbiosis which I just learnt about in plant biology!! We had a three week period of learning about fungi so covered a lot of ground😭
Loved the episode!
Around 23:40 you talked about how hard it is to research these kind of things because of funding and publishing.
Do you guys want to maybe someday finance or even publish research?
Having an in house researcher or a team would be so interesting
Maya said i can comment anything
so i'll comment that i'm very excited that Pentax released the Pentax 17, the first new analog film camera in 2024!!! excitinggggg
to think that a bonobo is only a mere 20 percent smaller than maya is crazy lol
love the podcast guys!
24:07 You may benefit from getting a ruler with a locking mechanism on it to show the size and scale of things.
Irwin tools makes a combination square that comes in a 16 inch variant for only like $16 or 20, with a thumb screw you can unscrew to slide the thing to the size then lock it in place
WORLDS GAYEST FEATURING CAT COHOST LETSGOOOO
as someone who studied bonobos for years, they take the saying “make love not war” very seriously 🫣
SO EXCITED TO WATCH THIS EPISODE!!! HAPPY PRIDE MONTH TO THE ENTIRE ANIMAL KINGDOM
12:35 This might not be the reason but I imagine a chimpanzee or bonobo would have better motor control than a toddler, so maybe they both have the same problem solving skills as human toddlers but the apes are more able to show it
ABO writers when they found out about the rock-paper-scissor lizard: °0°
Jokes aside, very cool episode. If i had a quarter every time i've heard "LGBT is unnatural, that goes against nature", i could fund all the research on pride in nature. Love y'all, keep it up!!! 💜
I want a black cat so badly, but I already have an 85 lb black dog. Hi Claire!
the only two people i was actually excited to find out had a podcast lmao
The comedic timing of the bottle was great
that bonobo didn't "figure" out fire, it learned it from humans lmao. You can easily teach a toddler to start a fire, the problem is more if they are physically capable and it's literally just not fair to compare a baby to an adult in terms of strength and dexterity lmao.
that being said everyone should go watch that video Kanzi (the bonobo) is awesome XD
So refreshing to have such a diversity presented! Awesome job and awesome theme!!
I like that Maya's side of the podcast is CLOSED
I just noticed that the mic arms are bolted to those La-Z-Boy chairs
They just keep on delivering holy shit
I also used to underestimate 3yos, but it really just depends on who’s raising the child. Which is a really funny statement to me.😂 But some parents are putting 1yo into swimming lessons, and I recently saw Class Year 1 Arithmetics that take place in Europe+Asia, and those start from 5-6yo. So who knows what they’re teaching them at age 3. (sorry for the info dump)
Yeah she def either thinks of 3 year olds as the same as 1 year olds or she is conflating intelligence and willingness to complete tasks, which I agree most 3 year olds would not sit there and patiently figure out how matches work to start a fire (thank God) but they definitely could easily, especially if they saw someone do it beforehand which I assume the monkeys did
Opening reminds me of how my last relationship worked, I miss her sometimes
If you teach a 3 year old to use matches they absolutely could, a 3 year old can talk and everything. I'd probably guess Bonobos are closer to a 4 year old human child though, which is still a toddler but developmentally that's a big step regardless.
Yay, ive been looking forward to this episode all week EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
taking a blast n watching this
THIS IS MY EPISODE!!!! HAPPY PRIDE MONTH!!! AMAZING EPISODE!!!!!!
My favorite podcast!!!!
happy pride month, animal kingdom :)
This is a seriously cool episode. SERIOUSLY COOL
Ants being farmers is both fascinating and terrifying
i've heard one of the ways human bias can affect queerness findings in the animal kingdom is our unwillingness to define an action as sex when it's homosexual
Great video!
more of this plz! much love for this episode
I could listen to you both for hours
thank you so much for doing a pride episode, i LOVED this!! ❤
You could do a World's Wildest Chemical reactions.
Like the bug that shoots boiling liquid.
My kids could absolutely roast a marshmallow at 3 years old.
I would like to propose World's Smelliest
This was a great topic, didn't know about any of these except the ants. Maybe for the next pride-themed episode it could be species that don't universally exhibit non-hetero mating behaviour, but will do it occasionally or on an individual basis
Fix the bench swing! (pretty please)
Also: fatherless beehaviour
To add on I want to share my favourite representation of pride in birds, mainly pigeons. Pigeons have lesbian and gay interactions with other pigeons and even sometime objects or humans, since pigeons are monogamous they will stay together till they die, pigeons will bring their lover rocks of affection and groom each other to reconnect a bond.
Another example is the two penguins Sphen and Magic, a gay couple who has raised 2 chicks called Sphengic and Clancy, the couple had collected pebbles at the start of mating season and had over all more pebbles then everyone else. The zoo offered a egg to then after another couple had 2 eggs and they successfully hatched, raised and loved Sphengic, a year later at mating season again they had another chance to have another egg and they successfully raised it again, Clancy then later found his own mate!
Happy pride 🏳️⚧️💜🏳️🌈
A 3 year old absolutely could figure out how to roast marshmallows dude.
Link to Trevor project is missing from the description. DinkDonk
It would be really cool to see an episode that's the world's most misunderstood
Peepo pog wow indeed. Love this series so much.
Happy Pride Month - we love nature!!
We don’t typically teach 3 year olds how to light a match Maya 😂. If we did they’d learn how to do it.
Happy Pride Month to all queer and ally animals! 😂🎉
Ants are sooo cool. 🐜 🐜 🐜
My friend LOVES Bonobos
17:55 Hamtaro so good
13:46 best out of context quote, Maya is such a chaos agent 😂
Great category!! Happy pride!
Not Maya underestimating the 3 year olds 😂 my nephew is nearly 3 and let me tell you, he could definitely light a match and start a fire and roast a mellow and blow and eat it if you showed him how! 😂 they're quite clever at that age
GASP - KITTY!!!!!!!!! ALSO HAPPY PRIDE MONTH EVERYONE!
From personal expierence i know that leopard slugs can grow up to 30cm. I have seen some huge ones crawling in my garden.
9:35 it was not Leafcutter ants, it was Army ants
I'm obsessed with this podcast
Great episode, please keep telling us about Queer nature whether its next June or even before then❤
So happy we got this episode! I literally commented asking for "world's gayest" two episodes ago
I’ve been so obsessed with this podcast!! Every episode is so fun and interesting❤
I remember being 3 years old. I didn't know if I realized that I existed or what but for me that's when my life started
13:00 😢 Dang Maya roasting all the 3 year olds. I remember when I was 3 I already knew how to talk (maybe not well but hey) and I knew how to use a match and ew I never ate my own buggers that’s disgusting
I BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
Maya taking some swings at toddlers. 😂 peepopogwow
19:08 that eye contact is crazy
16:24 "the last time I looked into a monkey's eyes, she grabbed me by my ponytail and threw me to the ground" "Hmm, depends on what you're saying with your eyes." "I don't think I was asking her to do that" is a crazy conversation lol
Didnt know you got Austin on the show?!
binging all these yay
I should not have taken a sip of a drink before 34:07
