  • You can take care of your grinder regularly and easily by running Grindz through it every so often, but it's also important to take these guys apart completely every so often and give them a thorough cleaning. Not only will you access areas that Grindz can't clean, it will give you the opportunity to assess the shape your burrs are in. Watch Gail guide us through taking apart, cleaning and putting back together a Mazzer Mini.
Need some Grindz? We've got 'em here: www.seattlecoff...

I just cleaned my grinder last night, getting the top and bottom burrs out and using a cheap toothbrush to... brush its teeth... and toothpicks to dislodge whatever I could reach.
Instead of compressed air cans, use a compact, high-power air blower, such as the Metro Vacuum ED500 DataVac or something similar. They'll eliminate the issues that can come with compressed air and can be better at getting the grounds out, especially out of hard to reach places because of how much air they can move.

If you love the beans you have in there, definitely do that; if not and they happen to be old, stale beans like we use for these demo videos, the shop vac is the way to go ;) - Kat

Well, this is one of the far more simple guys because you can just easily twist out and remove the top burr for cleaning. We wanted to focus on the grinders that required you to get into them with tools, etc. - Kat

wow... I really pushed a bit too far on cleaning the grinder burr.
I have recently been using everyday, but I don't think I cleaned it out for about 8 years . But now it is looking brand spanking new. :)

Not positive as we don't carry that guy, but if it's similar to the Hario models, you should be able to take the burrs apart fairly easily. Or you could run Grindz through it - Kat

A wooden toothpick is also good for loosening some of the old coffee from the burrs...

I just cleaned my Mazzer Mini for the first time since I bought it in 2008 (yikes). I only use it 2-3 times per week for a single espresso drink, so it wasn't any worse looking than the one in your video. But I did notice there was no course screen (~1cm squares) at the outlet of the burrs to break up clumps. I don't think I vacuumed it up, but somehow it ain't there .... Do you think I should install one?
Also, in reinstalling the top burr, it was difficult to figure out when to stop screwing on the top burr. Not sure if there is something obvious I'm missing there.
    Thanks for the video!
    Ann

BRASS brush, not a normal steel wire brush. The brass will not hurt the burrs like a steelie...
Make sure to vacuum out all of the steel wires that break of your brush (and they will).

I am concerned that I will not get the collar back in the same position as it was. Where do I position the collar before I undo the collar screw? I have the mazzer mini. I want to do it, but I am afraid I will screw it up. Please advise.

Why shop vac the beans? Just close the slider in the bottom of the hopper and finish grinding the beans. Prepare an espresso and you now have something to drink while you clean your grinder!
    Moment of silence begins now...
