When my grandpa was a kid around 8 years old him and his brother caught a turtle in the red river and they craved their initials in its back and let it go. 60 years later they was fishing in the same spot and caught that same turtle. That was the last fishing trip the brothers had.
As soon as I saw that you were slowly gaining line and that it was not a snag, I thought 'snapper'! Your title of oldest living thing in the lake gave it away also. Crazy catch, and tricky to unhook. I have found that the safest way to release one of these monsters is to hold the head up by the beak with my boat hook, while pulling the hook out with my pliers. Neat critters, and awesome predators.
Caught one that weighed 50 lbs on a craw-jig. Put it in the boat to unhook it, it immediately bit the end off on two rods and ventilated a new igloo. Unhooked it, weighed it(bottomed out my 50 lb scale) then turned it loose, the way it moved when I hooked it I thought it was a big spotted cat
@@BallroomDancinFools Aloha buddy! So I've caught Many turtles over the last 45 years or so. Some just as big as this guy. Hook removal is generally not a big deal. Long handled needle nose make it short work. As far as leaving the hook in, well it happens. They break the line, to deep to remove, ect. Well good news bud, they rust out! That's right, hooks rust out in record time! They are constantly in water, and the acids in the turtles (or fishes) mouth expedite the corrosion process. I've caught Hundreds of fish that had hooks in their mouth already. I remove them of course. If they're still eating, they still living. I've caught 1 particular turtle several times over a span of 20 years or so.

That thing lived with the dinosaurs!
Those things are just pure heft! No real culture about the fight they give, just stubbornness vs brute force 😂 great catch and nice vid 👍
This is how we know dinosaurs lived, you just caught one 👍
Hey those big old turtles are really cool and a great fight

I've caught some Monsters turtles in the last 45 years.

I said the same thing when my all time pb snapped my line at the net last week..
That was fkn crazy man, to cool 👍
I knew what it was as soon as you started pulling it in.
Me too!
Were you able to take lure out of turtles mouth? Just curious as that would be a feat in itself.
I don't mess with these prehistoric monsters
He can have the damn bait
Did you just cut the line leaving the hook in it's mouth making the turtle to suffer a slow death?
@@gregamerson9172 well just be honest you didn’t want to loose your fingers! That’s scary unless you are Crocodile Dundee…… peace
@GARRY3754 I've shot more than one of these monsters but none that big

Nice , but I seen one once in the wild that weighed well over 600 lbs
All that for a snapper well if that isn’t some clickbait
Lol. To be fare, it IS probably the oldest thing he's caught, so he ain't lying. 😂
So mush for Your Southern Baptist Christianity !!!
