A minor correction about gladiators: They *were* often famous and celebrated, but they did *not* have a high social status, on the contrary. This might be a bit difficult to wrap our heads around today, as both usually go hand in hand in our culture. Retired gladiators often founded gladiator schools (ludi) or took over existing ones after their master retired, because no other source of income was open to them.
Really interesting! Some parts were really hard to hear. I guess the editor thought the "old-timey radio" effect they used to represent a movie theater was super clever because they used it over and over again to an obnoxious degree. 😕
Absolutely. Interesting, but I had a extremely hard time with this video. The changes in volume and audio quality made it so I will likely never watch this video again (I usually watch them a few times to get the most out of them).

Some of us know the true reason why the Vikings didn't wear horned helmets was Ola The Hairy, high Chief of all the Vikings, buying those 50,000 battle helmets with the horns on the INSIDE, thanks Cpt Blackadder for the history lesson.
I get you have several minions sitting around and they need something to do.....but sometimes less is more!!!! Hopefully this comment section makes you realise.....The effects are a mistake....
As someone with an interest in historical costumes - I AGREE!! Corsets weren't invented until the late 18th century, and absolutely no stays or corsets were EVER worn against the skin. Tightlacing is a myth perpetuated by Hollywood, and unfortunately they force actresses into ill-fitting overly-tight contraptions who then complain loudly to media about how awful they are... They were the standard undergarment for 500 years, and every woman in the western world wore one unless sleeping (queens, washerwomen, everyone in between)- they weren't that bad!!!
Edit: This was written in the middle of the part about English accents, and the upshot is that Simon is correct. I used to work at one of the two oldest California Renaissance faires. These were the first two such events in the country, both put on by the same organization which was founded by a teacher -- the first one, in Southern California, was something of a school project. It kept its educational mission until the end, and so tried to remain more true to history than most of the later Ren Faires it inspired. This extended to the accent we were to use. For theatrical reasons, because it sounds "posh" to American ears, the Queen and her court used modern RP. However, us street actors were all taught to use the actual accent of Shakespeare's time. In reality, it's not much like the standard accents of either America or English. If you want to hear what it's closest to, watch a pirate film starring Robert Newton. As Long John Silver he used his native West Country accent, and so established the "pirate accent" for all time. As it happens, this is closer to the sound of the London accent of the late 16th century than any other modern accent. So, if we had any difficulty with the accent we were taught, the rule was: "When in doubt, talk like a pirate." The result was that any Brits who happened to visit the Faire thought we sounded like we were all from Dorset.
i had known before that not all gladiators didn't regularly fight to the death (for all the reasons you mentioned) but more people need to know this. movies are great, but they shouldn't always be seen as historically accurate
NEVER. EVER. Get your history fix from Hollywood. VERY few movies and shows even bother to get it right. Especially nowadays. I watched the animated show 'The Liberator' about an officer who fought in World War II. I enjoyed it and because it was presented in a documentary style it had me engrossed. Afterwards I found out that they had taken so many liberties with the story they may as well have started it with "Once Upon A Time..." and it was UNNECESSARY...The guy's ACTUAL story was solid and inspiring WITHOUT some cheesy hack hollywood writer 'punching it up'. Make up stories like Inglorious Bastards or Kelly Heroes or McHale's Navy and that's fine but DON'T mess with actual history and the people who wrote that history, 'Novelize' it, and THEN make claims about its authenticity...the movie 'Pearl Harbor' immediately comes to mind.
Hi. The voice distortion filter didn't work well on this one. I had to rewind several times because I couldn't understand what was being said. Hopefully you will reconsider this in the future 😊
Lol it’s HILARIOUS you mentioned the two helmets found from the Viking age with spectacles. The first one found in a dig relatively intact enough to reconstruct is in gladiator. Just imagine future alien archeologists combing through the wreckage of our civilization and finding one of those novelty hats that holds 2 beer cans on either side of it or one of those hats with a propeller on it from the 50's -- and for the rest of forever the image of a cartoon homicidal ape-man wearing one of those 2 hats is the logo for an alien sports team. Augustus' decision to ban fights to the death was mostly financial, but it also matched with his 'family values' propoganda (AKA moral legislation). He also made adultery a private and public crime.
I once read that the reason people thought Vikings wore horned helmets is because they’d be buried with drinking horns that happened to be by their heads, so archaeologists thought that clearly the horns must have been part of the helmet.
