@@warriorbeta when i was growing up, it was said that by 2020 we'd have run out of oil, destroyed the world with nuclear war and increased the sea level by 10 meters.
Yes, it is insane. I just moved from the coast to a much higher elevation further inland just to get ahead of this in some way. We're talking about something that might take decades or centuries to become a full-blown catastrophe, but people sure aren't doing much to mitigate the main problems causing global warming and thus polar ice melting. I don't have any confidence that the place I grew up won't be underwater in my lifetime, so I moved.

The main problem in the question of Greenlandic independence is that nobody seems to have a realistic idea of what it would look like.
A recent poll on the island showed that 55% of respondents felt that Denmark had a responsibility to keep paying subsidies to an independent Greenland, which feels like trying to have you cake and eat it too.
It’s blatantly childish. Independence isn’t a participation trophy. It’s a claim you can stake on your own, or not.
Yeah I don't know about the US acquiring Greenland but unless the Danish start migrating to it i do know it's a massive waste of their resources.
You make great point from a financial perspective. They get that sweet government cash(tax free), every single month to "Pay for trips to Greenland and back". Guess how many of them uses all that cash to fly back home and visit family.
I personally know 9 Greenlanders, and only one of them fly back home to visit family. Also 8 out of 9 of the people I know voted against independence. Every single one of them I have met through the education system. Every single one of them is under 40years old.
Side effects of a welfare state.
You hit the nail on the head. Greenlanders want the POLITICAL freedom but none of the economic responsibility that comes with such freedom because they can't actually shoulder the welfare state they have come to enjoy with as small a population as they have.
As a half Greenlander, half Dane and military veteran I want to say that I feel betrayed by president Trumps threats to use military force or economic coercion to rule us. We fought and bled together in Iraq and Afghanistan. Is this how you treat your friends? Trumps arguments are wrong. There is already a US military base and you can have more if you ask nicely. Just ask. The same thing goes for the ressources. You can invest and build mines if you want. Greenland is open for business, but not for sale. We are allies and will always be on the side of USA.
Yes, the relationship between Greenland and Denmark is complicated. Most Greenlanders would like independence, if they could sustain it without money from Denmark. But 85% of the population does NOT want to be a part of USA. Ultimately, the issue should be decided by the Greenlanders and NOT by American threats and coercion.
Yeah, the betrayal is universal.
From this point on until they make amends, America should get nothing from Europe.
It doesn't sound like you're the one in charge of this decision. Welcome to America.
You honestly think the European powers after the past 10 years shit talking him, bringing in foreign cultures, covering up and protecting non-white rapists, forcing a societal shut down that hasn't been seen since the Black Death for a disease that's as deadly as the common cold, calling him a Russian pawn while making the entire continent dependent on it for fuel, participating in the conspiracy to spy on his campaign, and calling him/his supporters Nazism 2.0 for having moral values commonplace 40 years ago would just sit down for a chat if he asked nicely?

emphasizing US medicare and other social benefits but completely leaving out Denmark's current social policies in Greenland is just wrong. US has abysmal social policies compared to Denmark with its free healthcare, education and even pay for being a student. US invaded Greenland during WW2 and simply refused to leave. Having no other option Denmark then agreed to let them have military bases provided there was no nukes. That fell flat when an US plane crashed with 4 atomic bombs where they did not find all the material from them. When US bought the virgin islands the agreement was also that US would accept Danish territory of Greenland, so now that they don't we should have those Islands back. US also forcefully relocated the "Thule" tribe when building the base, how would they treat the natives any different probably even worse if the annexed Greenland? We might as well just disband NATO and sell some territory to Russia or China. Of the 56tK greenlanders in Greenland there also live 18K in Denmark with full citizenship, they should also be considered into the equation of a referendum, one might expect that the most pro denmark greenlanders would be the ones living in Denmark.
Words words words words
Greenland is a total welfare state and cannot stand on their own without Denmark or some other big power. The Greenlanders who want to be fully independent still largely think Denmark owes them some kind of subsidies. They are like spoiled children, to think that independence means you can do whatever you want but also still get your welfare provided by Denmark.

Greenland is already completely dependent on the US by way of Denmark being completely dependent on the US. They are both dependent completely on the US economy and Us defense
@@ripfluffyman9972 As Canadians, our sovereignty or more than just "a formality". In fact, much more. And this is the problem with the myopic "business is business" view.
Yes, Canada has developed to supplement the USA primarily because... well, post WWII it just made sense. We agree that free trade is beneficial (with some concessions). The days of imperialism were fading because we SAW the outcome. It's better for collective society to not disturb borders and enact policy that is mutually beneficiary. USA understood this as a means to gradually influence Western Democracy onto the world.
in Canada, we have different political views and systems that affect a variety of institutions. Healthcare and Education is essentially dogma in our country. We won't give that up, at least not lightly.

So stop trying to portray yourself as a savior, when many countries sacrificed a lot since day 1 while the US was playing hide and seek the first years of the war.
The US already has all the access to extract ressources and build military bases or whatever they need and want. It’s been that way since the 1950’s, so the only reason I see for Trump to make Greenland a part of the US, is Trump’s desire to go down in history as one of the biggest presidents and fuel his own ego by making the US bigger. Trump also needs to understand, that Greenland is not something the Danish government can simply “give up” as he says, it’s a part of our kingdom but they have their own government, and technically that government would have to vote for complete independence and then they’d be free to join whoever, but I can see 1000+ American troops standing on the Greenlandic shores within a few hours of them declaring independence.
This whole history didn't include the billionaire "Peter Teal" or that's what it sounded like when I heard it. This guy padded Trump's wallet because he wasn't to create some kind of Greenland utopia.

@ WIth climate change it is becoming easier and easier and if anyone can do it the US has the capabilities. Denmark definetly does not. Most likely there is trillions worth of oil and minerals there

wouldn't say it would "eliminate the risk of corruption" but rather "eliminate the risk of unorganised corruption and replace it with US-style lobbies"
For the residence to benefit from any mining done there, they should set up a system like Alaska's PFD system. Minerals in Alaska belong collectively to Alaskan residents, and an agreement with the oil companies set up a system in which the companies pay the residents for the oil. However, the money doesn't go directly to the residents, but rather into the Permanent Fund which invests that money in the stock market. The five year average of the dividends from that broad investment is then paid out to qualified Alaskan residents.

As a former Alaskan, i can confirm this is a good strategy. My only caveat is that the extraction of non-renewable resources should also include the cost this extraction puts on the environment (which, if Greenlanders are anything like Alaskans, is literally their food). There's no such thing as a "free healthcare".
Socialized healthcare is paid through taxes

@@NP1066Still thats better than paying an arm and a leg for a band aid. Yes I know your supposed to negotiate your medical bill and have health insurance but is socialized healthcare that different than paying for health insurance?
Well at least your claims won’t get denied.
@ same difference. The US has simply _privatized taxation_ regarding health.
Instead of paying to the government, you pay to private corporations.
In return the population get less bang for their buck. And the companies can screw over the little guy/those with "preexisting conditions" and whatnot.
Those with luxurious insurance plans get overtreatment -those that would benefit the most get denied.
Hence the lower life expectancy of the US compared to other developed nations.
And the funny thing is that even comparing taxes, the rest of the world do not even have to pay that much different.
Actual rage tax rate in Denmark is around 36% for a worker with average income.
As far as I can tell, the similar average in the US seems to be around 30. But one has to add insurance premiums to that to be properly comparable.
Comparison lists online tend to focus on the marginal tax rate, that only the top earners in the workforce experience. Denmark_ tends_ to be listed with 56 %.
But _it does simply not apply_ for most workers, who are not in the very top income bracket.

@@mortenhyvejle When you mention England, you probably think of the Danelaw. Sweden was not part of that. Scania was of course part of Denmark back then, but that was before it ever belonged to Sweden. So Scania back then does not count as Sweden.
The three crowns which represent Sweden being in the Danish royal coat of arms for so long, is a remain from the Kalmar Union. A personal Union between the Kingdoms of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, which lasted from 1397-1521, although Sweden occasionally revolted and broke away already before 1521.
Denmark was the part that dominated the Kalmar Union, Norway was mostly loyal to the union, Sweden was the more rebellious party. When Sweden finally broke away from the Kalmar Union, Norway remained in personal union with Denmark. This was the beginning of the much more stable and long-lived union of Denmark and Norway.
During the early modern period, Sweden wanted Denmark to remove the three crowns from its coat of arms, even to the point where the issue was brought up in peace negotiations between Sweden and Denmark. One thing i wasn't clear on: Is Greenland the size of Western Europe?
Nope
Roughly
Sure
depends on how you define western Europe i guess.
If what makes you unsure is the apparent size of Greenland on a map - like Google Maps - this is because of map distortion. Basically, it's mathematically impossible to _perfectly_ project a globe onto a flat map, and thus we use various _projections_ to do so, the most popular one being the Mercator projection. They all have their pros and cons.
A definite con of Mercator is that it wildly distorts things closer to the poles, because it basically stretches gradually smaller areas to be the "width" of the Equator. Greenland, which is of course very far north in general, but especially so the northernmost parts, then gets to look _rather_ beefy when it's not _quite_ that big irl. Still pretty huge, though.
The thing is, even if Denmark decided to "sell" Greenland, the UK has the right of first refusal. It would never be sold to the USA.

@deutschermichel5807 😆 In a way it is. I love the concept of money and free market capitalism. My intention of profit distribution is to improve the quality of life for society especially those unable to fend for themselves in a narcissistic, capitalistic and ruthless environment. Being in freezing snow year round where no food grows makes them more dependant on trade. With some extra money they'll be able to afford basic needs of good quality. Raising the quality of life in a loving way is what matters. Whether that's through capitalism or socialism is trivial to me. I just want them to be prosperous and happy.

and there were indigenous americans in Greenland for thousands of years before the vikings got there!
@ If so, they weren’t the Inuit. But that issue is not what I was getting at. The narrator claimed that the modern Danes’ Viking ancestors settled and occupied Greenland starting around 1000 BCE. That is wrong. The historical record says the Vikings who settled Greenland at that time were Norwegian, not Danish.
@@phdtobe and im simply adding that the narrator is also wrong when he says the vikings arrived on 'an uninhabited island'. The pre-inuit dorset culture were there when and before the vikings got there, and there were other cultures going back even farther several thousand years.
@ Understood. Some of the historical facts they present are def poorly researched.
Any purchase of Greenland must consider the potential mineral wealth, not just the current GDP. $50B is a joke. It should be more like $2-3T.
So less than half of the yearly US expenditures
@@davidhochstetler4068 I think $3T is roughly 10% of the US annual GDP. Given the mineral wealth in Greenland is probably dozens of trillions of dollars, possibly more, and the strategic military value of the location, $2-$3T seems like a fair amount to pay.
@ well if it’s worth so much Denmark better get to mining it. Oh wait they don’t have the infrastructure. Greenland has little to no bargaining power if they actually want to sell of their own free will. It’s either take whatever the US offers or become Africa 2.0 and let China control it. Or keep doing what it’s doing now
A military campaign worth $30-100B could easily give them Greenland. A bid around that range is fair.
Also, in reality, the Danes shouldn't even get any money. What gives them the right to enjoy so many resources? Just because some random seamen happened to claim that island by force few centuries ago - does not mean the resources belong to Danes. The resources should be distributed equitably to all of humanity.
And if they still insist on might is right logic to be applied, we all know how that story is going to end.
The core of the argument applies generally to every nation state. Also the US, China, Russia, Canada. Gatekeeping resources from fellow humans by borders is a crime against humanity. And the only way such a crime is enforced is by having a large military. So either walk the talk (war) or stop expecting freebie money for Greenland.

Greenland does not really need much protection for its own sake, you cannot really invade Greenland. If for example Russia would try to invade Greenland it would have to be on the east coast, that is even more extremely sparsely populated than the west coast. There is no port that could support an invasion of anything beyond a battalion or perhaps even company size unit. If landed in one of these places (one town with 2000 people, another with 500), where would the "invasion" force go from there? It would from day one descend into a rescue operation. At these places there are only gravel runways. The US has always been in Greenland to protect itself (from missiles coming from the USSR or Russia). To protect Greenland, the Danish Navy is actually now and for the foreseeable future much (infinitely) better equipped than the US Navy. In the video they mention four Danish naval vessels. In reality their are four frigates and three patrol crafts (corvettes) in the Arctic squadron of the Royal Danish Navy. They are capable of breaking first year ice, and that is a precondition for even being able to operate in Greenland's waters and fiords. Surprisingly there is not a single US surface warship capable of breaking first year ice. Russia has 17 such ships (but their own enormous artic coastline to patrol + intelligence suggest that only about half the vessels have sufficient crew, due to crew being removed to fight as infantry in Ukraine). China, like the US have no such surface warships. All of this means, that while Denmark has some capability to patrol Greenlandic waters the US Navy has zero, none, nada. You could argue that the US could build and acquire artic warships like the Danish, but if you look at past procurements you will see that it normally takes 10-20 years for a new ship-type to go from design to introduction into service of even the lead ship.
