  • I talk about the difference between snapping punches and pushing punches. How these different punch techniques are different in movement, power generation, and how they affect your body's balance, movement, attacking and defending overall during a boxing fight. And, of course, I show why a snap punch is superior (but often misunderstood) to a push punch.

    Ive been boxing for 3 years now and ive always snapped, and so many people have tried telling me to push when i punch. Ima show em this to prove a point. Thank you!

      anonymous bruh people probably tell you that cuz u dont have a lot power and are too focused on pulling your hands back too early. Like he said it’s supposed to be one movement

      you just can have a sparring session with them rather than explaining to them...you know, they can feel the force of your punch. ;)

    Snapping punches = shock damaging waves keep going into your opponent body while you are already back to your regular stance.

    It's best to understand each and use either when appropriate. Speed ppl always snap more. Stronger ppl can hit you on the glove/shoulder/chest and push through you. What everybody seems to misunderstand is the footwork that makes each style effective. I like to teach ppl to snap combos and pivot/push on the last punch, then change angles. Everyone can do either style. Just depends on hand speed of each fighter and the experience to recognize what's effective.
    I respect your take on boxing. Keep up the good work.

      Another varible ill add is resistance of your target Start with a solid wall with zero give 100% resistance, youll notice snap punches feel amazing, and so do push punches (careful on your wrists)
      But then try something way smaller and lighter like a speed bag or let a friend hold the top of a piece of paper and you punch at the bottom part hanging down,
      Its then youll notice push punches do nothing in terms of adding power, just moves your target out of the way whereas a snap punch essentially freeze frames them in that time and space, youll be able to snap punch the paper all the same regardless of how it has nesely zero resistance and should just move out the way, whereas the push punch will never full impact because its always moving its target further away before it can fully impact it.
      Im 180 now so i have to be careful but ive personally felt the effects back when i weighed 140 and would spar my nearly 200 lbs cousin, he would throw a push punch at my chest and id close my guard together to block but i was so light on my feet he would push me back rather than hurt my arms like a person with that much weight advantage would be able to do. Even featherweights are planted firm asf when throwing hooks tho its like making yourself a human gyroscope youre so stable in that motion that if you get countered it wont be pretty

    I don't think pushing or snapping is the problem.
    Most who started martial arts at the beginning , probably knows what is a snapping punch.
    BUT they can't do it constantly.
    This is something I discovered
    I was hitting the mitts with a friend of mine. From the start, I could hear the "smack" sound from hitting them. But after a while, they turned to slightly pushing punches, because I tense up.
    It's difficult to keep yourself relaxed constantly

      I think it's from shelling up and tensing the traps allot... and being very defensive conscious with blocks and shelling maybe?
      I got the opposite problem...
      I'm good at being loose because my fat ass gets so tired but I'll forget to keep hands up or rechamber right and I hear you can jam a loose wrist snapping em all the time because homeboy moves too...
      I don't know who to ask but I'm a black belt if I'm right about sending snappers when they're kinda stationary and ball up and rain hades if you decide to fight fire with fire in a pocket of mutual fury...
      I also think I heard pushing or bone stack punches are better to counter and snapping is better to attack from Shane faze...
      I probably just disposed the best answer 5 years of UA-cam search would do and for free LOL
      I DON'T know who to ask if I'm wrong but if I'm right, then my old ass needs to start training kids for a job lol

      You're probably not doing it right if you need faith to believe in it. When you throw a good snapping punch, you feel the difference in power right away.

    Another great video. You've given a lot of great tips in your videos on how to achieve a nice snapping punch. Staying loose is key for me, as I tend to tense up, especially during combinations. Practice makes perfect though, and I'm hearing that "POP POP POP" sound that goes with a good snapping punch more often than not these days. Thanks Johnny!

    You are a genius sir! I have always done exactly as you explained you shouldn't . That's how i been taught. "Bring the punch back as fast as you push it out", and i've always felt lack in power when i sparr, almost as if am toutching them while they are loading on me. This makes so much sense. I have to redo all things i learned!

    Ok, boys let's explain why snapping punches are better than pushing punches... THROUGH PHYSICS!!!
    First the 2nd law of Newton states: F=ma (Force= mass times acceleration).
    Now, what that means is that the force multiplies the more fast you through a punch (because there is no way to actually change your mass). When you snap, the speed is greater and it takes less time to actually reach your target. a=u/t . Therefore, your acceleration is bigger, resulting in more force.
    Next is Momentum
    Now if you remember from your high school days, F=P/t (Force= Momentum over time). If you actually try to push your opponent after you deliver the punch (aka pushing punch) the time you spend on the target is increased, thus reducing the force of your punch [e.g. F=P/t --------> F/2=P/2t which means that if you would actually push for as much time as you did for actually reaching the oppoentn, your power (after the initial impact) would be cut in HALF].

      +Jedi Battlemaster True enough, but you are missing a point. You can change your mass. Or rather your "effective mass" during a punch. Boxers need to constrict their structure right at the moment of impact, otherwise the only weight that is transferred to the target is the weight of the arm or even worse the forearm if elbows are not tight at impact.
      That being said, a true challenge of power punchers is to balance their effective mass with their hand speed in order to both hit the target clean and transfer the maximum force at the point of impact to the target.

      +Jedi Battlemaster Acceleration = change in speed / time (or final speed - initial speed / time). Therefore, snapping punches increase in speed quicker in the same amount of time vs pushing punches (as opposed to just being speedier). I'm splitting hairs though. Thanks for posting

      +Jedi Battlemaster I commend you for trying to use laws of motion to defend your standpoint, but you're completely off base.
      "F = ma" describes the force being applied to an object with mass m with acceleration a. As in, if you hit an object with force F, that object of mass m will have an acceleration a. That has nothing to do with your speed or acceleration. Determining your force F is a completely different subject.
      Furthermore, you say "when you snap, the speed is greater". What? That's not true. The only difference is what you do with your body after you collide.
      I'm not even going to touch your momentum equation. It is completely irrelevant and has nothing to do with this discussion.
      Jonny from expert boxing does a very poor job explaining the difference and pros/cons of pushing/snapping. And his analogy with baseball was terrible. I don't think anyone watching this video has a better understand of the two.

    One thing I'd like to add is that a lot of people confuse how much power a punch has with how much a punching bag or person's head moves as a result of the punch. This is not necessarily true and creates many misconceptions about generating power and the power of pushing strikes vs snapping strikes.

      @@mrhorselegs616 late asf but ill explain for him, go watch your favorite heavyweight hit the heavybag (besides george foreman he push punches alot)
      Youll notice the heavybag barely swings when they hit it as hard as they can, rather youll see the bag just appear to levitate for a split second as the tension gets loose on the chain then youll hear the noise of gravity pulling the bag down to earth returning tension to the chain.
      In short a true cracking punch on the heavybag should "lift" it more so than rock it back and forth

    I agree pushing punches throw you off balance and leave you open . These kind of videos are back to basics and are great for refreshing memories of even experienced boxers . Johnny, can you post some new videos soon I've been back in training for about four months now and I forget a lot of my training drills ... 😲

      +expertboxing Awesome! I have been working the slipline lots and have kind of a short reach for my height, inside fighting is my style since I have to work my way in against most guys in my weight class even some shorter than me.. I can definitely use tips on defending inside positions to maintain it as long as possible and to make use of my natural inside power . Thanks for the heads up and your videos have proven themselves to be effective I will keep an eye out .

      +expertboxing My kick box coach told me to punch harder and I did, he didn`t tell me any technique, I must have adjusted with instinct, I still could not punch even near as hard as the other men in there and they just did it naturally! I don`t know how they had that incredible power!

    Hey great video, very informative!
    QUESTION: I just started trying out boxing, like literally took my first class last night, do you think this is ok OR should I work with a personal trainer first? I feel like the more tired I get by the end of the exhausting class, the more my technique begins to suffer. The teachers I work with are also working with a decent sized class so they're less critiquing technique than trying to motivate people to keep going. What are your thoughts?

    I like to think of it as I'm using my body to launch my arm forward, making a slingshot effect to launch the strike. To me it makes sure that the body is actually contributing to the power, and drastically decreases muscle fatigue.
    A push puncher uses more rooting in their structure which decreases their footwork and evasion when they're on the offensive, but if you snap you can be much looser and fluidly shift between offense, defense, and evasion.

      Watch Jesse Enkamp's "snap your punches" he show it for karate like kata but his technique also works for punching.

    Johnny, I know you made another video discussing how to through a snapping punch, in which you mentioned you could, but didn't want to, make a longer video on how to do it. It would be great if you made a more in-depth video on how to throw snapping punches.
    I hit a bag for a long time, casually, and developed some bad habits, especially pushing my right straight right (right handed). Do you have any recommended drills to develop good snapping habits and balance?

      Justin Stoll For more detailed info, please read the guide on snapping punches on my website. Tons of helpful tips there and if you're ready for more and still can't do it, we can talk about then and resolve what's not going right. I haven't gone too much into depth because for the most part...my viewership is divided between 2 camps (those who CAN throw snapping punches) and (those who don't believe in it). If it was (those who CAN) and (those who can't BUT WANT TO), I'd give more effort. I think the collective consciousness just isn't there yet for a video like that to be fully appreciated. These videos take a lot of time to make and then giveaway for free and for me to then have to spend time debating with beginners who've never been in a boxing gym...not worth it for me.

      Kulo WC Almost never. Snapping punches are faster, more powerful, less energy waste. I don't know if I can ever think of a time when I want to have a weaker, slower, more tiring punch... Perhaps the jab to the body is really the only one that any trained fighter would actually do...and that is used to push him off balance.

    Yo Johnny. When i run i do a mixture of sprints, intervals and long distance 6 times a week (i do long distance 2 twice a week). When i do long distance runs, i run for about 20 minutes. But I've started lifting weight twice a week. If i was to lift weights then go on the treadmill for 20 minutes, would i get less fitness/ stamina results compared to doing the runs when i haven't done any type of exercise before hand. Thank you

    better yet use both pushing and snapping techniques when punching maybe pushing punches to the body then snapping punches to the head. Best of both worlds.

    Mayweather and Pacquiao fantastic at snapping punches. So much pop
    and exerting of tension and release compression.
    He isn't really known for snapping punches but great example of a snapping strike
    is GGG's left hook on Monroe's chin in the 2nd round.
    I thought his Jaw was broken when I heard that land.

    Power = Force / Time. Decreasing the time your fist is making contact while keeping the force equivalent will increase the power.

    I think u should be able to do both. sometimes u do want to punch through your opponent and sometimes snapping punches - just mix it up. Both ways of punching are useful in certain certain situations

    I'm not a real fighter or anything, but hit the bag from time to time. I like to throw my jabs basically with my hand vertical instead of horizontal for the snap and the return to guard. I feel that is the best way to generate power (jab appropriate power) and speed and proper technique for a follow up power punch. I feel that the hand will naturally move into a more horizontal positioning as you get more advanced and chain your strikes together more fluidly, but should be taught vertical to emphasize the return of the jab should be as fast as the sending it out. What do you think about that?

    it seems that if I use the snapping punch I get more speed. but I don't feel my stopping power is as good. how can I work on that.....?

      +Slice Money Check out my article on snapping punches. If your power is suffering, the biggest reason is because you're pulling back your hand and also probably because your core is still pushing instead of snapping. You have to snap with your whole body. You can't mix and match techniques.

    i think the snap comes when you send the punch right after your hip pivots which creates the whip. if you release the punch before your hips fully pivot then the punch becomes a push

    I have a huge problem Johnny, and I'm in a state of you could say desperation. I always aim for the snapping punches, sometimes I achieve them, sometimes don't. When it comes to the heavybag, and the straight right (I'm orthodox) - I found two ways of generating force for the straight right and achieving snap. First one is that I whirl, yank, my LEFT shoulder back so that it propels my RIGHT shoulder along with the right arm into the bag. The other way is that I fire the straight right off of my right hip - I forcibly twist my right hip forward which in turn propels my right shoulder and the hand to the target.
    The question is this - when I'm throwing my right cross in the first manner I tend to be slower in 3 punch combos, and is tiring me enormously. I can't fire three quick straight rights that way, no matter how violently and diligently I try.
    Whereas, when I'm doing it in the second manner, I can do it more quickly (in combo sequence) and I find it less tiring.
    This is all without stepping, completely stationary.
    Please give me some advice, or your opinion on this, as this troubles me a lot, I have a fixation on that particular punch.

      Srdjan Teofilovic I have a guide on snapping punches on my website that can help you. Because I can't see your form in writing...I'm just going to have to assume that the way you're doing it is not right. The way you describe is fine, but there's a good chance, little details are left out and causing some inefficiency. It's ok...all part of the learning process.

    so say if a guy with huge arm muscles but a weak core, he wouldn't be able to punch as hard then a lean person with a decent core?(same weight) and when would you use a pushing punch over a snapping one? thanks.

      +Chris Meyer Power starts at the feet. It's more about technique, which is more of a whole body thing. For a strong straight right, you pivot your rear foot and make your shoulder and hips turn. Some people have natural power, but technique is very important. Guys like Gennady Golovkin are powerful punchers, but it all starts from his excellent technique

    question though...I've been locking my arms when punching jabs now I've hurt my elbows. I've tried to stop that by somewhat pulling my punches just before my arm is FULLY extended to avoid locking. Basically how can I snap a punch without hurting myself?

    Pushing is the basic snapping is basically pushing but with more speed also pushing transfer weight so it has power

    I've given little thought to this apparent debate about pushing and snapping punches. I just know that snapping jabs and body shots saves me energy. Unless the opponent is covered up. I do get a much better hit rate snapping because they aren't telegraphed (and often come as a counter punch). I fail to see how this can possibly be true for a hook. That's a pushing punch for sure, same with any overhand. Plus F=MA, which is true but the landing power ultimately uses Newton's second law, which is POWER = MASS x VELOCITY and velocity is a product of acceration and time. All the same, and I obviously can't explain this using mechanics, throwing snapping punches from a relaxed state, especially as a counter, is winner winner chicken dinner. Less energy and more speed generated over a short distance.

    One query I have is whenever I snap, my arm does retract, but not fully back to face, and you said there's no pulling back. Is there a pulling back after the snap or something?

    Old video and not many recent posts, hoping to get an explanation. I don't particularly do a pushing punch and I am working on making my punches much more snappy. But the concept I am struggling with is this.... When I was a young kid in Tae Kwon Do class I could never break a board. My father realized the problem and told me to act like I was trying to punch him through the board. After that, I had no problem, it was the follow through that I was lacking. I was aiming at the board and snapping my hand back. Now obviously punching a bag is different than breaking a board, but I am struggling with "aiming through the target" and still making my punches snappy.

      Try aiming only to puncture only an inch through the target, and THEN you bring it back.

      +Billy Vang Only a snap can look like a snap. A fast pushing punch will still look like a push.

    Pushing punches have their use too though when thrown at the right moment. A pushing clean straight can force somebody to get (or stay) in the corner/ropes. A pushing hook can make somebody lose his balance and even fall. Finally, a pushing uppercut on the solar plexus/ribs/liver will do more damage. I'm speaking for single power shots and not combo-wise.

    hey johnny this might be off topic from this video but i just got done sparring and i noticed my jabs arent efficient and they arent reaching my opponent and if i reach in a little bit more ill get hit with a right cross , do you have any tips on making my jabs better?
