Man cannot live by bread alone, he needs a Sony Bravia to survive.
🤣 Absolutely superb Mr. Click!!
You *know* it's a good citybuilder when your little dudes build a cute little fence around their underwater kelp farm. Nothing's getting over that fence, no siree.
For underwater-ish city builders, Anno 2070 has roughly the same general feel (especially with the Deep Ocean expansion, which adds underwater plateaus and more underwater buildings. Slapping the ARRC 2170 mod on top of that adds a lot more stuff as well.) - end of the world because the environment got destroyed - but sells the “environmental disaster” side of things much better.
In Anno, everything is built on islands because of worldwide flooding, and resources/goods need to be produced and used to support your city population. The city-building aspect seems to be much less emphasized though, since the focus is instead on supply/production chains and in logistics than strictly city building. They do still demand luxury goods but the population of the game is just that - they’re workers in the city, but they also have their own lives. They have different tiers and the more “advanced” tiers demand more complicated goods to stay happy.
Loved Anno, willing to take a look at this. Thanks, Mack!
Ahh, Anno 2070 it brings some memories.
There was actually a proper underwater city builder: Deep Sea Tycoon (also called Atlantis Underwater Tycoon) released in 2003
@@DarthDave573 What about it?
Glad someone remember that game
@@DarthDave573 hah that brings memories 😂
Imagine a BIOSHOCK city builder. Resources, adam, contraband and metal I suppose.
Don't forget to make Apple juice, what could possible got wrong?
Damn you, now I want this. :p
@@NarcissistAU Yeah and when things go bad in your city, riots happen - then splicers appear. And if they not killed, they flood buildings. lol
The tiny WOKE mob would scare off the coward developers nowadays. You'll NEVER see another game with a BioShock narrative/philosophy/etc..
Fuck that would be awesome...
This is why Frostpunk is such a great game, the tension and immersion is top notch.
Frostpunk is an masterpiece for sure
Frostpunk is too overwhelming and rigid/technical. There aren't much flexibility in game choices and pace. Once you complete the 40 night run, there isn't much to desire.
@@hummingbir6 My man, aim for endless mode 100 days at least. The Christmas event is sweet.
@@hummingbir6 true , but the game shines with the campaign and not survival mode . that was added as an afterthought just for the community that wanted more content
Survival city builders will always have the high bar of Frostpunk to meet, and probably fail to meet. That deep feeling of struggling for life in everything you do. Those little elements of recreation always feel like the minimum to prevent madness and revolution and not without significant cost. What a game!
From the little I've seen so far, Surviving the Abyss *may* have more of that deep, dark, underwater survival feel to it you are looking for - at least from an atmosphere perspective. It's just launching in early access so it's possible it will have the opposite issue of Aquatico and get the atmosphere right but not execute on the gameplay . . .
i find Surv the abyss a bit less enjoyable aquatico is a bit more lenient and fun i suppose at least i can get alot further down the development phase than in abyss.
🎶 "Darling it's better, down where it's wetter, take it from me." 🧜♀🦀
2:04 -2:26 honestly.. sounds like modern culture irl so makes sense its made its way into the game.
A lot of recent city builders seem to focus more on some gimmick like being in space, on the back of a giant creature, floating in the air etc rather than bringing anything new to the genre.
Jup, same gameplay just packed differently. All those open-world games like AC, GoW, Horizon get boring really fast because it's always the same.
Living 2000 metres down is the definition of being immersed Mack
Here I am developing a water-themed citybuilder all my own, but it's set on land and centred on water engineering. My premise is a world where only water engineers can be mayors, or work in a government.
"Its a bit its a bit" say no more.
In a surprising move, you're quite optimistic about the nature of man. In an underwater city on the brink of survival, there will definitely be humans who are more interested in luxury goods and how comfy their couches are.
What a shame. Sadly this city builder isn't alone with its unbelievable take on survival. It seems a lot of games don't really get that aspect. Luxuries and the need for them should come much later when the population gets more settled, so should be late game issues. This reminds me of the infamous Rimworld mental breakdowns that happen because a Pawn "cannot eat at a table". Just breaks all immersion.
Life Aquatic! Sea Nauticals! The Abyss!! (best Cameron movie EVER!). Let the sea be me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just clocked your town name…..Worthadrown 😂
Bubble bubble, worth a city builder!
I'd absolutely love to see a video of you reacting to Velma. Get a few bells ready
We had underwater city builder in Anno 2070 Deep Ocean.
Give me convenience, or give me death.
Paradox just released a "Survive the Abyss" trailer that's going into early access today! I was confused which title was owned by who as they seem to be going in a similar direction!
I agree, this is a lost opportunity. Hopefully they devs will give this more of a survivalist edge. Yes, not many of these type of games about. But one other you might like to look at is
'Surviving the Abyss', which looks quite similar.
Hey Mack! Really good vid! Thank you for cover indies. Some really good ones out there. Could you review "We Who Are About To Die"?
Well thought out review, thx.
Quite a few underwater city type games coming out this year. Shall be interesting to see which one you think is best Mac!
Amazing how 2 games with almost the same concept came out within a week of each other.
Your feedback in the beginning of the video was really good.
Aaah the old "Help we are dying"
Karen: But where's my christmas lights, right NOW" 1/10 - Karen, I would leave but I need to speak manager first.
hate that about city survivals about SURVIVING!
Thanks Mack. You give it your seal of approval. I’ll get it. Your trustworthy out of any UA-camr.
Oh this is the surviving mars clone but under water.
Might want to look forward to Surviving the Abyss. I saw an ad from this and noticed it was from Paradox, so I'm following it for now.
4:00 holy macaroni!
Good review, probably get despite the lack of immersion.
I'd like an underwater city builder in the Bioshock universe. Or one that takes place in one of the alternate universes. Where you have to build up Rapture underwater. Deal with engineering difficulties of building underwater habitats. Build new basic structures. Gather resources of course. Establish foundations and build outward, having to deal with actual water physics and pressures. Claiming new facilities from the ocean. Sometimes the ocean breaking back in.
But also building up the society that lives in it. And then deal with the factions that develop and rivalries. The criminal gangs and smugglers. And of course the discovery and development of plasmids. And over time having to deal with the breakdown of these societal forces and portions of the base perhaps becoming difficult to control or even lawless. Isolating portions. Closing some off. Retaking some.
Bioshock: Rapture.
Based on its description, I was expecting Aquatico to basically be Frostpunk set in the sea, which would've been awesome. This is very disappointing :(
Yep immediately thought "Do we really need laser weapons to fight sharks?"
They'd pose no threat at all lol.
We literally stick then in fishtanks as decoration for our waterparks XD
It's even funnier when you realize one of the earliest food sources you can research is... a shark hunting lodge.
You can hunt sharks with primitive techniques, and even feed your colony primarily on a diet of shark meat, but somehow struggle to beat one without a fancy guard tower. Guess it must be a huge one.
That being said conventional weapons don't work so well underwater so who knows, lasers might become the primary means of dispatching sharks.
Looks like the underwater part of Anno 2070
Man we need big open world with a city builder what explore own city play as npc for role-playing.
Both underwater and on land.
Nice review ! =)
The apocalypse bit is kinda old now.
How about: Humans have reached a utopian existence. Everyone is fed and housed, etc.
Now we are reaching out to the sea to explore this last true frontier!
Lets boot the doom and gloom.
It is OK to have a positive game.
Mack... You have to play Against The Storm. It's an awesome city builder
Great vid
1:16 I'm imagining a plot twist where the whole premise was a falsehood and the surface world is fine, managed by a megacorporation or two, etc. while a _sea caste_ is sent down into the depths to toil forever. _Hmm all the equipment was built by the same person who wrote the history books. 🤔_
@2 Corinthians 4:7-11 listening to a review of this novel, I also remembered Plato's cave allegory: gone into the cave for catastrophic _reasons,_ apart from any _catastrophes,_ the outside world awaits any survivors who manage to escape.
Looks like a re-skinned Mars city builder similar gameplay to Surviving Mars.
We also just got surviving the abyss
Most similar games do care about comfort etc though...as added depth I guess.
Against the Storm is for people who like Anno starts but don't have the time or want to play a long game.
I tried the demo of this via steam and it felt exactly like another city builder called Patron only with a under the water theme modded on top of it.
because thats exaclty what it is ,from some of the mechanics to the luxury goods to the upgrade system for the buildings - but patron is from the same company so you cant really blame them for trying the same game in new setting ^^
surviving the abyss
Surviving tha abyss coming out soon too
Have you reviewed Against the Storm?
Just needs a pineapple for a building and it be perfect 😹
Played the demo for this, it did not grab me whatsoever. I couldn't redo my pipes, so if you screw that up you're fucked. Also, why is relocating my building the biggest sin? I bought it, I built it, I got the resources for it, let me relocate and re-rotate my goddamn buildings. Waiting for Surviving the Abyss.
Mack, try Surviving the Abyss! That looks exactly like you wanted this game to be
6:25 So...
What you want Mack is "Subnautica" infused with "The Rift Breaker"
Yes or even just more of rift breaker
Instead of being cliched and having luxury goods, why not have a morale/mental health aspect? That would fit better with a 'grim survival against the odds' theme, surely?
I can't believe you haven't reviewed cliff empire yet
“We all like a bit of skimp..”
Giggety.
Reminds me a bit of the XCOM underwater game.
Under water management games seem to be like buses; you wait ages for one, then two come along at once. Mac, are you going to review Surviving The Abyss (by the people who made Surviving Mars)? It seems a good place to do illegal human cloning experiments. It is in early, early access though.
just checked Surviving Mars was made by different devs.
It's gen Z who built these underwater cities.
It's not 'Atmospheric'..it's 'Aquapheric'....LOL...Thanks for another great review.
It takes me out that the buildings doesn't look like they can stand any kind of water pressure
Mac, you should play Against the Storm. It's great.
When aliens come after humans have been wiped out and they dig the ruins of the apocalypse, they will find human remains hugging their luxury goods
This is Andrew Ryan's City Builder: Bioshock Edition. Is a man not entitled the the luxury goods made by the sweat of his brow??
Yeah i despise the luxary goods,
im not giving you a diamond ring at the end of the world.
Any chance you'll have a look at Terra Invicta ? Looks interesting
I don't remember if mark covered grand strategy games , they are very complicated games
@@wrathtundra114 he reviewed games like crusader kings and hearts of iron
It's so complex to even learn that game! I tried and gave up 😂
@@ValHazzard oh great, I need to look it up
@@TrueRandomization no my friend , bold to assume that, maybe not interested. Every one have tastes you know?
A great thing about being underwater is you are able to build vertically much easier.....and they don't do that?
I hope the devs listen and make a proper DLC.
Bring back the foundations of the like of settlers 2.
looks like a take on the horror game Subnautica (fantastic game by the way)
There is No Such thing as "Corel Reeves"
‘Water’ load of rubbish!😄….I’ll get my coat 😞😂
Kinda gives me IXION vibes.
If these are the "survivors" (or in ixions case, destructors of the moon out of basic idiocy) then i'd rather take my chances on teh surface with them gone.
On the topic of underwater city builders, what are your thoughts on Surviving the Abyss?
With that theme, I really had hoped they'd make it a lot more survival-y, way more harsh and dangerous. I was looking forward to detailed flooding, to citizens frantically hammering the "close door" button as the station slowly fills with water. As it stands, this seems to be a surface city builder with a bit of a reskin applied to it. Bit of a shame, really.
They should have presented it as an exotic resort for millionaires and it would 100% make sense, instead of saying it's post-apocalyptic...
Will you review "Surviving the Abyss" soon? it came out yesterday
If Mackk is looking for a really good citybuilder, I would reccomend Hearthlands. One of the better ones I played and doesnt get nearly as much coverage as it should.
sounds like this is where the tory party went to survive
Luxury goods over food, welcome to 2025. 😂
Sort of Frostpunk I guess
You should try submarine titans.
Its a really good RTS game!
£17.54 on steam as well. Already got it, just not fired it up yet as I've been too busy playing Doomdark's Revenge :D
Mack there are people with iPhones using bloody food banks. People love luxuries sometimes at the expense of all else. No doubt if we had to take to the seas to survive there would be those immediately whinging at the lack of adequate broadband and cable TV. Remembering human nature and what aholes we can be should restore your immersion.
I play this inside my aquarium tank at home with Bruce to get better immersion
Bruce Forsyth?
@@alexa1591 xD no Bruce the Shark
@@drshinobi3979 Brucie bonus
There is another similar game just released on early access called surviving the abyss...
Dont get the attack on wanting plants and luxury goods. It's in damn near every single city builder. Cities skylines, you want parks and such for happiness. Anno you want different foods and such. It's not really a new mechanic and very basic.
Help I am under the water
Totally disagree on the luxury goods. They failed to pull it off, but I think they were trying for a cities skylines vibe where a big part of the game is creating an awesome place for people to live. Obviously there are people who want a Frostpunk type experience, but there are also those of us that want a progressive creative experience.
oi, Mack, hit up stronghold crusader HD for the nostalgia and see if it holds up 20 years later
most games have that element, furnishing
W STREAM
Thing is with the state of British society today, this game's luxury system is probably realistic...
Just wish some developer would create game which actually look like the concept art im sure we would accept that.!!
Surprised you didn't compare this to Surviving Mars since this is a VERY direct knock-off, you can see that in the interfaces, building types, and mainly the interface.
Still waiting on the Dwarf Fortress review.
Every other game seems to be a city builder. Is that a reflection of releases or your preference?
Don't you think he answered that by saying "I love me city builders, as you're probably all aware" ?
@@raftermanhoward1883 no, i dont. If he reviews one a week that could mean there are 52 being released a year, but it could also mean there are 2000 released a year.
TBF I reviewed one in December and then before that it was October so you can hardly say every other game lol
Every other game apart from the 30 other reviews in between now, December and October 😅
@Worth A Buy ok, I was exaggerating. But I wasn't flaming, its a genuine question. Lot of defensive fan boys triggered by it it seems 😅
Man those AI generated backdrops in the cutscene...
Well spotted! I wouldn't mind those at all (in fact I think that the ability to create assets with AI is a great thing for game development) if the game is good, but in the context of this game, they do seem a little half-arsed. Maybe at least hire an artist to fix up your AI generations a bit - there are people specializing in that by now.
