Keep Your Dump Trailer Dumping- It Works, It's Simple And It's Cheap

  • Key function of this system:
    To disconnect the truck charge wire from the battery when operating dump cycle. This safeguards the truck wiring from excessive amp draw (blowing your auxiliary fuse). If your trailer is equipped with a charging indicator and/or diode (prevents trailer back feed when truck is off) I would install this on the truck side of this jibberish. The test light is not necessary but nice to show your truck is putting out voltage and that the relay is operating properly.
    The most cycles I've dumped my trailer in a days work is 15. No Problems. If your dumping more than this I would recommend a second battery and/or some heavy battery cable straight back from your vehicle's batteries(y).
    #1. Choose a Test Light of your liking. Incandescents are nice because they show a voltage curve by brightness. LEDs are pretty but they'll be on or off
    #2. Fuse holder and fuse, 3/4 amp for relay coil
    #3. Example of a nice relay and harness on Amazon:

    Added this mod to my dump trailer. Cheap solution to blowing fuses or unplugging trailer with every dump. Works great. Thx for sharing.

    Jacob, thanks for this GREAT video! I wired my dump trailer today as per your vid and also wired a wireless remote feature using 2 more 5 pin relays. Everything works just great!! It all saves so much screwing around! Thanks again!! Ed- Salmon Arm, BC Canada

    We just installed the Pole Pal USA 7pc Dump Trailer Wiring Set on our PJ Dump Trailer and couldn't be happier! Their kit uses 2 gage wire and quick connects. We have tried adding a solar panel but it still wasn't enough. We have 3 work trucks and 3 trailers (dump, equipment and enclosed) and plan to install the truck side wiring on all 3 trucks and the trailer side wiring on all 3 trailers. It is the best solution I have found by far! We will use the trucks battery and alternator to supply power to the pump on the dump trailer, winch on the equipment trailer and interior lighting, outlets and accessories on the enclosed trailer.

    If you're doing that much work... Just run big enough wire to handle the load. Straight to the battery. Leave truck running while using
    . Job done.

    The trailer has a small wire that runs from the truck connection to the battery to charge the battery. A 15A fuse or breaker in this wire near the battery should save the 20A fuse in the vehicle.

    Thanks for making this video! I never knew that I needed to unplug my trailer from the truck when I operate my dump trailer hoist. I recently blew the fuse on my truck which goes to the trailer charging circuit and didn't know why until now. I hope to make a set up like this so that I don't have to manually disconnect every time. Great idea!

    Awesome video. Incredibly frustrating thst the trailers don't come this way given it makes the trailer far more useful and it's like 10 bucks in parts. Always my biggest pet peave when hauling dirt with a dump trailer. Kills them Way too fast.

    where do I ground the hot wire to the test light and where do I ground the wire to 85? Currently have both grounded to the trailer and the test light stays on after I push the up button. And it won’t go off until I remove the relay and install the relay back

    • @JacobGilkerson

      Pin 30 to truck 12v power. 87a to battery positive in trailer. 87 to test light. 85 and 86 are not polarity sensitive. One to ground one to working leg of pump. The working leg of your pump is the big positive wire that comes from the big solenoid to the actual pump. The working leg is not hot unless the dump trailer dump function is activated. Like I said before pin 85 and 86 are not polarity sensitive they're the pins that power the coil. If you're still confused have a mechanic watch the UA-cam video.

    • @JacobGilkerson
      @JacobGilkerson  4 роки тому

      @@mantasstrikulis8954no it is the other side of the main solenoid. The working leg is the big wire that is only hot when pump is running.

    So here's my question. The dump trailer has shore power to charge battery. I want to add truck power to charge while hooked up, along with the relay pack. Any back feeding into the charger for shore power charger that will damage it? Or should a 2ndary relay be installed to cut the charge wire from shore to battery🤔

  • @IntoTheDirtshop

    Is the relay normally open or normally closed?

    • @steventhury8366
      @steventhury8366 10 місяців тому

      It would have to be normally closed, or allowing current to pass through when resting.

    I installed a cable from my truck battery to the end of my truck and a cable from my trailer to plug into the back of my truck using the Andersen plugs. Problem is that when I go to dump, the inline fuse I installed, trips and I can’t reset it right away. Does my 5pin connector have anything to do with a back feed since I’m connecting my truck battery to the trailer battery and the 5pin connector also has power. Not sure even how to ask this so I hope I made sense.

      What size breaker did you install?
      I did the same thing, used high amp welding cable with Anderson plug in pickup bed.
      I had problem with breaker I installed always tripping. I got a different breaker and it stopped tripping on a standard dump load.

    Would this work even if I ran an extra high amperage wire from battery to help with charging the battery? Example like a winch set up.

    • @steventhury8366
      @steventhury8366 10 місяців тому

      I run high amp welding cable directly to pickup battery. I have a breaker installed close to engine incase a short happens.
      This relay in video could not handle the 250 amps of current if coming directly from truck battery.

    I am not sure what the purpose of this is??? Is it to help your trailer battery last longer without dying or to protect the truck? Thanks! I have issues with the battery on my trailer dying regularly and am trying to figure out how to use my truck to charge it.

      Your truck may a blown fuse. The fuse gets taken out while using the dump while still connected to the truck. So the relay or in my case smaller fuse protects the fuse in the truck so your trailer battery will keep charging while your traveling

    • @steventhury8366
      @steventhury8366 10 місяців тому

      When led goes on, you know the pickup fuse is good, and on board battery charger will replenish the trailer hoist battery.
      Otherwise, you assume battery is being charged, but it's not, and you don't find out until you need to dump something.
