    In this video, I walk you through the #1 reason I see for the most common problem in dump trailer operation. If you find that your dump trailer's hydraulic pump is spewing hydraulic fluid everywhere, stick around to see how The TrailerSmith recommends fixing it.

    Hey, it's Hartford. I have been having problems w my power pack on my PJ and came to YT to find info...and found your videos! Awesome! Liked and subbed. I have been getting aerated/foamy hydraulic fluid for awhile in my unit. It then has greater volume and...overflows all over the %#&@ place just like you say here only more! I added a T and hoses to run it off my tractor, too, so that may be my problem...and now it doesn't lift, so I may have blown my pump. I'll keep trying to solve this but I may have to come see you.
    For the YT public: I know this guy in the real world and have for years through patronizing this business. He's a genuinely good guy and knows his stuff.

      Hey Hartford! Glad you found us! Thanks for the sub and for watching! And thank you for the kind words. You know where I'm at if you need to bring the trailer by!

    Hi my trailer spits fluid out of the weep hole at the top of the ram but only at the top of the dump position. Any idea?

    Great informative video. Excellent content. Problem is i bought a brand new triple crown dump trailer and my battery keeps dying to the point i bought a new one from O'Reillys auto store cause the battery that came with trailer was bad. Turned out that i run dumps about 4-5 times and brand new battery dies again. Bring it back to O'Reillys cause it has warranty and when they put it to charge, battery checks bad again, so they just give me a new one under warranty. Im already on the 5th battery being replaced and still have this same issue. Anywhere i can start looking to troubleshoot this issue?
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

      Hi! Thanks for watching! Just a question or 2 to get clarification. When you say you run dumps 4-5 times, is that 4-5 in the same day or 1 or so a day over course of multiple days? Is it using a twin cylinder or scissor lift? Is it a power down or gravity down dump trailer?

    Thanks. Reference- - I have three switches on my trailer: "Up-powered/Down-powered/Down-w/zero power". I discovered the reservoir overflows if I use the Down-zero power switch. I understand why [I think]. Question is: Can I save on battery power by using the gravity down switch; but, before I hit bottom [where the backflow/overflow starts]; what if I power it back up an inch or so, and then use power to lower it the rest of the way? Would that refill the empty cylinder with ATF and stop the air gap from occurring? Just wondering. [I get 4 dumps on an Iron-acid battery/day, traveling 89 miles r/t between dumps. Then, I put it on the 15amp charger overnight.(The 2amp charge would not bring it back to full overnight)]

      Gravity down option is definitely the best way to save battery power. If the pump is working correctly it shouldn’t overflow. You can try the method you proposed, but it sounds like you may have a valve sticking. Something else that would be helpful to do is to add another battery to your system to give you more power for more dumps.
      Great question! Thanks for watching!

    Why is my telescopic lift dump trailer starting to cavitate (microbounce) while going up?
    Usually occurs halfway through the second lift cylinder.
    Trailer is about 1-year-old and has around 50 to 75 cycles on it. Nothing has changed and never did this before.
    Weather loaded or empty bouncing still occurs.
    Fluid level is correct.
    Thx

      Hi! I would say that you may have some air in the system or quite possibly a defective seal in the cylinder.

    Hello. Thanks for the information. I have a similar setup on a car lift trailer. Should I install a fuse between the hydraulic pump and battery?

    • @TheTrailerSmith
      @TheTrailerSmith  Рік тому +1

      We never see these trailers with fuse protection on the main lead. For safety purposes, if you wanted something in between, I would recommend a heavy duty breaker. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!

    Hello. I have a Gaylord dumper with a 480 motor and hydraulic gear pump. I have a reservoir with a breather on top. I don't see another bleeder. The breather holes are pretty big. Will the air just work it's way out through the breather?

    • @TheTrailerSmith
      @TheTrailerSmith  Рік тому +1

      Yes. If it has a breather, the air will work it’s way out through there. Just make sure that if there is any type of filter membrane that’s it’s clean & dry.
      Thanks for watching!

      @@TheTrailerSmith thanks for the help. The breather is just stainless with holes. It's in an warehouse that is fairly clean.

    I use gravity down and never had this problem

    • @TheTrailerSmith
      @TheTrailerSmith  4 місяці тому

      This problem is only ever experienced when using power down. Gravity down is good for this scenario. Thanks for watching!

    What kind of oil does it take?

    • @TheTrailerSmith
      @TheTrailerSmith  Рік тому +1

      You would need to check with the pump's manufacturer for specifics on what type of fluid to use. You wouldn't want to mix fluid. if it's red, it's normally Dextron 3 ATF. If it's clear or yellow, it's usually AW32. The Dextron can be picked up at any automotive parts store. The AW32 can be found at Home Depot, Lowes or any other store that sells lawn equipment and and can be found in the lawn and garden department. But again, it's very important to check the pump manufacturer's recommendation. I hope this helps! Thanks for checking out the video.

      It’s loosing hydraulic pressure somewhere. Either in the cylinder or the hydraulic pump. It can be pretty tough to diagnose. This is likely an internal loss of pressure, not visible from the outside. If the trailer is old or has a bunch of use on it, there’s a good chance it’s the cylinder-and it would need to be replaced or rebuilt. If you’re unable to do this diagnosis on your own, you may need to consult with a mechanic or someone that works on hydraulics.
