Great video. Two of the greatest albums ever made. Everything at this time was so awesome, from the music to the controversy with the tour. A true rock n' roll band back on top of the world. Went to a midnight launch at Wherehouse Music and listened to the albums all night until the early morning. Still listen them regularly to this day. Best times!
Well, your phone is constantly spying on you and has really big ears (often listening from the other room) but where Guns is concerned, it’s just your run of the mill divine intervention.
For songs like 'November Rain' and 'Don't Cry' and 'Estranged' - these big, sort of epic pieces - me and Axl sat, I believe over there on the floor [points], we ordered some Russian caviar, we had a bottle of vodka... and we listened to 'Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me' by Elton John," the drummer continued. Upon hearing the tom fill in the John song, Rose said to Sorum, "I want you to do that, or something like that, on 'November Rain.'" The catch was, the singer wanted this "signature drum fill" to also appear on "Don't Cry" and "Estranged." "I said, 'You want me to use the same drum fill?'" Sorum continued. "He said, 'Yes.' So I did the most famous fill that drummers give me shit for all the time, it's called the 'Pat Boone-Debby Boone.'"
Use your illusion 1 and 2 had no filler. They are awesome albums that have stood the test of time. Every song on those albums are great. In fact, I like a lot of their lesser known songs way more than their "hits".

This is one of the first tapes I ever bought as a kid. Yes, tapes. Anyways, I still consider this a guitar masterpiece and it’s what made me stop listening to music, and instead, pick up a guitar and play along. And I heard in this video that critics said there were “filler” tracks on these albums. Nonsense. Only crap song imo was “my world” that axl included with no one’s knowledge.
i was 16 in 92 , and i borrowed the tape of illusion 2 from a friend to make a copy , (never return it , still have it somware ) and buy the illusion 1 after a bit
Really wish Adler could've gotten his stuff together. Illusion would be different I'm sure. Should've told axl to bounce and not sign anything. Velvet revolver sounds way more guns than democracy which shouldn't have ever been a guns album. Appetite though is truly a great album. Excellent video thanks.
there are moments of sheer brilliance on both of these records. However, it certainly would’ve been nice if they cut out the filler tracks and put out one amazing album and then after that, you can put out the B sides. Anything subsequently isn’t as good because Izzy Stradling was such a strong writer.
Matt's 'story' is nonsense. The real story is Axl told him to do it a certain way and Matt said 'OK Boss'. Great job on putting this video together Mixing Mastering Online. Thanks!
With the UYI albums, G'n'R zigged when they should have zagged. The rawness of "Appetite" fit right in with what the newer grunge bands were doing. G'n'R was one of the few 1980s bands that could have continued into the 1990s with credibility, because they didn't need to change what they were doing. What they did instead was drop a bloated, pretentious and over-produced double album that was just the sort of thing 1990s music was rebelling against. Or I should say that's what Axl did.
Use Your Illusion I and II are the biggest letdown in rocknroll. GNR exploded out of nowhere and set the rock world on fire with Appetite. Then we got those half assed EP's, then waited for years for the next album to drop, and that shitty offering is what we got. No band rocketed to fame faster and higher, and no band just imploded faster and lower than GNR. Thanks Axl...
Were you listening?? I think they were all a disaster. Axl always gets all the blame for the bands problems, and izzy gets all the credit for the songwriting.
It's stupid. You work your ass off to make it than your at the Hight of your carrier and totally destroy it (Rose)thinking he's King shit or "Royalty" like "hey I'm the voice off this band with out me there is no band" it takes the whole band to make the music. Than showing up late the fines for that and all the other crap he pulled and the after hour hundred thousand a night parties he would have. But now look at him ha.
@@jordanpratt3821 Agreed, they were all in really bad shape, but Axl was another level ego and control-wise. Izzy got cleaned up and that never plays well if the rest are still full on addicts.
Slash is the reason I picked up a guitar at 7 years old. GnR has always been, and still is my favorite band. That said, they were never as good once they let Adler go. He had a bounce to his playing that Matt just doesn't have. You can easily hear a degradation in the quality of the rhythm section when they got Matt. Duff never meshed with Matt the way he did Steven. I feel like Steven being replaced was all Slash and Axl's doing, even though Slash and Adler were supposed to be friends. I mean, it was a heroin addict firing a heroin addict and alcoholic because they were too fucked up. That's ridiculous. There's plenty of footage from the early 90s where Slash played like complete shit because he was so messed up.
I think the biggest problem was that Steven was confrontational while Slash was chill...Slash actually went to rehab and was willing to get sober at some point.
I wonder which songs have the 58 Explorer on them.. I love Exporers they sit right in between a les Paul and an SG tone wise. They can also do a great job of covering fkying v tones . In my opinion its the most versatile Gibson .
I totally disagree and im a huge GNR FAN. "right next door to hell," "Perfect Crime", "back off bitch" "MY world" are all terrible songs. Even "get in the ring" has not aged well. Also did we really need 2 versions of "don't cry"? no we did not.
6:30 Bob Clearmountain wasn't fired cuz sound was too polished. If anything thats how those albums actually sounds..Too polished. He was actually fired because Axl found out he was using drum samples on the drum tracks . For those doesn't know drums samples were a new thing back in the early 90s but GnR wanted to retain the original sounds on the record without any modern alterations. Thats why he got fired.
Great Video with a lot information. But, I'm pretty sure that Steven Adler Record "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" and "Civil War" on the UYI album. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty sure.
The rhythm guitars are buried on these albums. You can hardly hear them. Also, Axl was starting to lose his voice by these albums. Most songs on AFD he sings in his falsetto. On UYIs he rarely uses his falsetto, but sings in his mask voice really loud, because he can't hit high notes consistently anymore. Of course losing Adler hurt, but everyone else has already stated that. Offsubject from the UYI albums, but I wish that they could have found a way to keep Izzy as, at the least, a studio musician. I also wish that as time has gone by that Axl would have given up the vocals job to the best Axl impersonater on the market, as his voice has an incredibly short shelf life.
The end of gnr was when they fired adler , hired dizzy and when izzy quit. And the illusion your was a overblown circus with the background singers. But they were nice to look at😂😂
There's no such thing as a JCM 800 2203 'four input model'. For the four input ones, it's just JCM 800 1959 for the 100 watt and JCM 800 1987 for the 50 watt one. They are basically a Superlead Plexi in JCM 800 clothing. I had one, which I bought with a refund after my JMP 1959RR Randy Rhoads amp blew up two weeks after getting it new. The JCM 800 2203 is pretty much just the JMP 2203 with the newer look. The master volume model, which cascades the two halves of V1 and has the MV between the tone stack and phase splitter tube. They were hassled in the late 1970s by a distributor to update the styling of the amp line up, which is why JCM 800 happened.
I always heard it was the song Locomotive that was the one Adler had to keep doing takes because he kept coming in wrong on the timing and was the final straw that got him kicked out.
Naw, Civil War is the only song on the album with Adler playing. You can hear it in his style and drum sound. This was the first little teaser single that came out before the album. Unfortunately Steven was ousted soon after we heard the song and imo the band was over. Upon hearing the singles from the albums release I confirmed the band was an empty shell of its former self.
That’s what I’m saying he couldn’t play Locomotive the way they wanted it and that’s one of the reasons they booted him. There’s early demos of him playing it on UA-cam and it has a different swing feel to it. They wanted a more technical drummer like Matt to do it. This video is saying he kept messing up on Civil War that pissed everybody off. I always heard it was Locomotive. If you’re saying that Civil War is the only track he played on then they must have been happy enough with it to keep it so I wouldn’t think it’s the one that got him fired.
@@travislee9662 In other interviews they said they were too exhausted to redo Civil War and so they kept it. They were so close to breaking up during this time. What I've stated above is all facts from numerous interviews. And I'm old , on the west coast near them, bought their first record June 1987 before anyone knew about them. Watched them play a basketball gym. I remember it all and how things developed and can certainly tell you that History doesn't always record it accurately. Such as how they keep saying getting Welcome/Jungle on Mtv was the only hurdle in getting GnR popular. The truth is that it wasn't until a year after the album was released, when Sweet Child/mine video came out, that they got popular, broke from Areosmith tour, started headlining. Duff and Slash confirm this in interviews and I lived it, blasting their music and wearing their shirt before anyone around me new them and this lasted for about 1 year....
Dude I’m old too I bought Appetite for Destruction when it first came out when I was in middle school. Like you said records of things are spotty and memories and stories of what happened during recordings change over the years. I just know when I first heard about them kicking him out I read either in an old guitar magazine or something at the time that his drumming on Locomotive was what pissed them off. Like he was too messed up to get the timing down for coming in at the right time on parts. I can’t remember or find where I read this because this was when Use Your Illusion was just coming out. I remember I heard about it before I actually bought the tape (yes tape I wasn’t doing CD’s yet lol) and I was like, "I’ve really got to hear the drums on this Locomotive song” if this was the reason he’s gone. Oh well whatever the story is this week lol
I heard Civil War on the radio multiple times way before the albums were released, in 1990. Then it disappeared until the album was released. Weird. I think the piano was missing from the version I heard in 1990.
Yes. Steven and Izzy. When Steven got the boot I think it pissed Izzy off. Matt Sorum is solid but he's a little robtronic. Adler had more bounce and wasn't as heavy handed with it. He was perfect for that group. That original lineup is arguably the greatest hard rock band ever.
All the songs on these albums written during the Appetite era I can only imagine how cool Adler's drum parts were. His sound and all those little hooks he does with Duff feeding off of them would have made the albums tolerable. Adlers fault though. And the band was in too fragile of a state to wait and coach Adler back to his senses. Having been a fan since a month after Appetite's release i knew the band was over when adler was out.
Im sure im not alone when i say that i was so bummed when they finally came out and i listened to them. Or attempted to. It would have been a bit better if it was just one album of good stuff instead of all the b.s. The first one was the first cd i ever owned. They came in that big dumb box.
No Popcorn no Guns n Roses, sorry Axl its true. I saw many interviews after they kicked him out where they could bearly see or talk..........wtf ? Kicked him out but seems the rest just kept doing their usual thing ! Good friends.
I liked the original band, especially when Addler was still sober enough to drum. His groove was slinky and very Rock N Roll. Unfortunately, I could never get past Axhole's vocals. They are like fingernails down a chalkboard. The only thing worse is his personality (or lack thereof). Of course my nobody opinion did not stop him from being a massive rockstar. Thanks MMO.
I’m with you there on Axl. I’ve never been a fan of the vocals from him and equate him to the likings of Joe Elliot, David Lee Roth and Stephen Pearcy. They were in bands that were great but they’re the only thing not great about it. It’s funny too because their personalities really do fit the bands they were in, they just aren’t very good singers at all. Never understood what people saw in any of these dudes, but hey they all made multi platinum albums and I’m still working the 9-5 grind so what do I know? 🤷🏻♂️
Well Asshole Rose his vocals did mature for the Illusion albums the first album was more less screaming. But no different than Bon Scots voice in which I find highly annoying I preferer Brian's voice. Thing us they work there ass off to get to the top and Rose's ego destroyed it all. But look at him now a washed up rock singer that can't move or sing on stage al because he didn't take care of himself.
They should have called them Use Your Delusion. Couple of decent songs, tons of filler and very clinical, clean production. Which is funny as they went for Bill Price because they said they didn’t want that.
After the Illusion albums era GnR was pretty much done. That Spaghetti covers album was horrible lol I got to see them twice and they were cool live. I saw them opening for Iron Maiden in 1988 and saw them touring w/ Metallica in 1992, Faith No More opened. I like them but I’m not a huge fan. At least I can say I saw both versions of the classic band. Both were good live but the original 5 piece band were way better 🔥🔥🔥🔥
These albums are way too loud…it’s hard to make out the parts. I remember pretending to not be annoyed by that when I was a kid. I always felt 70s heavy tones are better than 80s/90s heavy tones.
True! for a band that "made rock and roll dangerous again" on Appetite, they sure did record 2 bloated, drawn out albums of almost nothing but power ballads!
Totally different band without Izzy & Adler. They lost their groove completely on UYI. A sprawling mess with maybe 1 decent album in there somewhere. Remember being soooo underwhelmed when they came out. But hey.... dats rock n roll
FFS wake up and smell the bullshit. 4 bottles of vodka per day? Always off their tits on heroine? Yeah OK. This hasn't been exaggerated at all to promote a certain rock n roll image for the band? I guess slash just became amazing on the guitar by magic without needing to practise for several hours per day whilst sober? and probably the best rock album of all time just wrote itself and recorded itself, whilst the band members were slouched around completely wasted. Absolute nonsense. It takes hard work to be this successful, not being wasted the whole time. 😂
Noone said Slash was wasted all the time since he was a child man. Slash practiced like a maniac for years growing up. The deeper and deeper debauchery came later.
Adlers drumming on Appetite was brilliant...Izzy added inspiration and a real raw and crunchy rock n roll guitar. That line up could not been topped
Absolutely loved both when they came out and still love both albums. 86-93 recordings were great!

Thank you! 😃
There was an operatic reach to that double album beyond the hairband roots.
It's true, it was huge in scope and theatrics. I saw Iron Maiden last year, and they too had that big scale with theater, great songs, like GnR!
Just because they had long hair doesn’t mean they were a hair band. They were way different from hair bands.
@@jnorthrop70 True, I don't call bands afterwards Bald, Goat Tee bands lol
When they came out, I was kind of disappointted after Appetite but, as GnR were my fav band, I enjoyed them for a while.
My older brother preordered these.
i was 16 in 92 , and i borrowed the tape of illusion 2 from a friend to make a copy , (never return it , still have it somware ) and buy the illusion 1 after a bit
Thanks a lot for this, please give me more😂
Slash; "He just broke the microphone, we're _outta_ here."
Off mic voice from someone in the band beside him; _"I_ don't know 🤷🏻♂️"
😂😂😂☠☠☠
The two iconic guitars from this album you never even mentioned.
I bet Axl was going nuts over that November Rain mix hahaha as someone who mixes their own recordings, just mix it, master it, then move on!
there are moments of sheer brilliance on both of these records. However, it certainly would’ve been nice if they cut out the filler tracks and put out one amazing album and then after that, you can put out the B sides. Anything subsequently isn’t as good because Izzy Stradling was such a strong writer.
Matts a good dude he played on our 2nd record great drummer but didn’t have Stevens swing.
If I recall correctly Izzy said and Slash confirmed that Izzy was not involved in either or the USE lps
their thirst 3 ALBUMS NOT ep WAS BEST ALBUMS EVER! NEVER BEATEN!
Matt's 'story' is nonsense. The real story is Axl told him to do it a certain way and Matt said 'OK Boss'. Great job on putting this video together Mixing Mastering Online. Thanks!
Barely had enough gold material for one album buuuuuuut...drugs so, RELEASE TWO ALBUMS!!!!!
Yes, it took me a long time to figure that out. I kept listening to the dud tracks thinking it was my fault.
@@VictorMaxolI like every single song in its own way and some even more than the singles.
Ted Poley at 1:48 is the real star of this vid.
7:58, bottom left, is that Bong N' Bud?
For sure, I thought it was broccoli on first watch through. Ha.
🔥
The loss of Stephen Popcorn Adler was a real shame because he was a much cooler Gn’R drummer than Sorum. Sorry. 😂
Cool info -- what a disaster Axl was back then, as was the rest of the band. It's amazing those records got completed.
It would be better if they hadn't. They're SHIT.
There's no bad moments on either of these records.
I totally disagree and im a huge GNR FAN. "right next door to hell," "Perfect Crime", "back off bitch" "MY world" are all terrible songs. Even "get in the ring" has not aged well. Also did we really need 2 versions of "don't cry"? no we did not.
@@bill-hc4vhI never liked Don't Damn Me, My World
Not quite
@@bill-hc4vhNext Door was from the AFD era.
@@JohnnyPerthyeah, Garden of Eden is a better version of that same song.
Civil War was the only song I liked out of both albums. Turns out that it was the only Adler song as well.
2:57 that is one hard photo
Slash wanted all the attention for sure, live as well, rhythm drowned out
I thought the rhythm guitar was very upfront and prevalent

@bi⁸1😂❤llywilliams8753
The end of gnr was when they fired adler , hired dizzy and when izzy quit. And the illusion your was a overblown circus with the background singers. But they were nice to look at😂😂
I didn't realize Josh Homme played Keyboards as Dizzy Reed in GnR
That’s how this video ended? Is there a part two?
Just one part I'm afraid, a brief look at the album in under 10 mins.
I think a two double-album release requires a two double-video series! :) seriously though, I'd love more but this was quite enjoyable. Cheers.
Cheers!
Oh well whatever the story is this week lol
oh my goodness the audio pops are insane on this video please please start fixing this on your new videos
8:35 is that weed and a bong on the Billboard magazine?
Yes!
Very Rockin gnr!!
Thank god for Matt sorum. Steven was a goofball who could not evolve.
Awesome channel
Thank you!
I heard Civil War on the radio multiple times way before the albums were released, in 1990. Then it disappeared until the album was released. Weird. I think the piano was missing from the version I heard in 1990.
You're not wrong, it was released on a Geffen compilation album, Nobody's Child: Romanian Angel Appeal in 1990.
@@Chris_SherwoodI had it on a cassette single with You could be mine
You have a band of awesome talented musicians, and then you have Axl Rose...
I've heard that Sorum's pretty lame fills were Axl making him play like Adler. 😏
Loosing Adler was the end of their edgy sound
True...and with out izzy....it showed
*losing
Steve had great swing. He wasn't a bad drummer either.
Yep 👍
They came in that big dumb box.
doing the same drum fill in 3 songs over & over was dumb. makes it a tedious listen
My world was dreadfull
No Popcorn no Guns n Roses, sorry Axl its true.
I saw many interviews after they kicked him out where they could bearly see or talk..........wtf ?
Kicked him out but seems the rest just kept doing their usual thing !
Good friends.
Sorum has used that same drum fill on every recording hes ever done 😂
What did Slash see in Sorum?
The drums on use your illusion are terrible.
9:30 😭
Listen to you could be mine live vs recording and thats all you need to know even patience is do iconic cause it was real
Both were good live but the original 5 piece band were way better 🔥🔥🔥🔥
number at II was at no I and number was at II was at no I
These albums are way too loud…it’s hard to make out the parts. I remember pretending to not be annoyed by that when I was a kid. I always felt 70s heavy tones are better than 80s/90s heavy tones.
For me, Yesterdays and 14 years were just stocking fillers for those albums.
Soooo- we getting a Chinese democracy video next 👀
Definitely some stories there!
@@mixingmasteringonlineThe Axl solo project 😊

True! for a band that "made rock and roll dangerous again" on Appetite, they sure did record 2 bloated, drawn out albums of almost nothing but power ballads!
100% Truth.
@2doobsmcjubes555 Also Totally 100% Truth.
True Dat.... 🤘😎🤘
Metallicas Black Album tour was twice as long
It’s crazy someone is too messed up to play gnr. I could play this at deaths door 😂. Wow.
Totally different band without Izzy & Adler. They lost their groove completely on UYI. A sprawling mess with maybe 1 decent album in there somewhere. Remember being soooo underwhelmed when they came out. But hey.... dats rock n roll
No one can drink that much vodka in on day 3 to 4 L. No man. Just ask John Bonham. But his pancreas did rupture. So theres that. Duff that is.
The album was too engrained in a wall-of-sound, 80s production/mixing style.
The band lost the edge when Adler got sacked.
Who cares? Appetite was their masterpiece and losing Adler destroyed the synergy of that band
And people say John Lennon was hard to work with
