That part of the universe broke off into the vortex back in 2020 I feel (large cultural/peers' experience context, not in relation to her antics, just so we're clear lol) 😒
I knew she couldn't be 20s cuz I've known of her for long enough now that it would be illogical to believe she was still in her 20s. I wonder what she would look like now without the use of botox and filler. She might look younger. She always looked youthful.
Yeah. That was crazy. And she identifies personally with a Harkonnen(sc). They're the bad guys. In the first Dune movie, they're pretty disgusting, but I guess she just liked the way Sting looked with red hair? Then when she found out he was horrible, she was just like, "Yay! I'm horrible like him!"
I've never been stateside so don't know what nickels smell like yet I have a strong idea based on what I've had the misfortune to smell of other people and she really looks like she'd smell like that lol - bunch of old coins, yep probably true
Although I think it’s disrespectful to insult people’s intelligence, but grimes definitely does have that impression on me; that being brought up by wealthy family has never made the lady have to truly solve things on her own since she can afford not to live in the real world; socially and financially
I’m pretty sure she said something one time about only eating one kind of food for months (I think it was lasagna or something) and she started feeling like crap, because duh. And then she went to the doctor and they just told her to eat something other than lasagna lmao
@@peach986lol yeah it was spaghetti but she’s also autistic n that’s a common thing to eat the same foods everyday for long periods of time she’s not stupid bc of that…
I don’t think it’s intelligence as much as it is street smarts. I was surprised to find out she’s almost 40 with three kids. The way she acts reminds me of my teenage self. I was a sheltered artsy kid so the biggest worries I had (outside of school) were choosing my outfits and working on my creative projects. Living away from home, paying bills, and having a job while in college helped me grow up a bit. Still practice my passions but they’re not the only thing I worry about now.
She was still trying to grift her progressive fan base by pretending to be for a socialist utopia and for artists. Now we know it was all fake. I foolishly believed in her for longer than I should have. I bought the nice woe is me act.
I know. I can't listen to Lana del rey anymore. She one of the worst people...not only is she a zionist but she wore that net mask at the peak of covid19.
I've kinda let go of the obsession of consuming art only from people who align with my morals... cause I wouldn't have anything to listen to tbh. Most of the greatest in music history were abusive towards women or just pos at some point. I won't wear their merch and give them my money directly (buying new albums, going to shows,...) if I know they're awful but I'll still listen to the music I like while still being aware that I should take the message with a grain of salt at the very least. On the other hand, I'd be heartbroken if I learn that one of my faves was really problematic
@@evecates2232she's not a zionist. She has said very clearly that she loves Palestine and hates what Israel is doing to them. She hates genocide. The "net" mask you're referring to had multiple layers of sheer fabric. It was not just net. It was a safe fashion mask specially made to look like netting. It was made by a designer for her to be an "illusion" mask and it was only used for a music video she was in, in which she was riding in a car by herself. She was pro-masking and vaccinating and false rumors like yours are why she bailed on social media. She also got called a Trump supporter even though she can't stand him and put a hex on him.
@@evecates2232my comment got deleted, so I'll try this again. Lana Del Rey is not a zionist. She has said very clearly that she loves Palestine and opposes genocide. I hope this helps and doesn't get deleted again. 🤨
Honestly, it’s pretty likely, lots of celebrities or those just in the public eye do this, cause why tf would you genuinely name your kid after what looks like a barcode 😭
That's a good point. I hope that's the case, but also, why couldn't their fake names be normal too? If their public names are seen as their real names, they'll still be a target for bullying. I know it's better than having their real names be awful, but still...
Grimes hits hard man, I was obsessed with her music for the duration of 2012-2016, when I was aged 12-16. She was part of my most formative years, and now I can't listen to those songs without feeling quite sad
@@sphinky1156 Clashing personal/political/ideological beliefs are a perfectly normal reason to want to distance yourself from someone. you're welcome to give her your support in my place ig?
I feel so bad for your age group in this situation. My son was your age and really liked and respected Grimes. Then her problematic comments made him pretty depressed for a while. He used to like Elon, too. He still loves space exploration, but he really doesn't appreciate the way the pair of them pretended to be basically kind and for a less hateful world only to do a 180. Just saying this to let you know you're not alone. And I tell my son that the good he related to in them was part of him, even if it wasn't real on their end. He has integrity where they did not. I hope your generation keeps your love of cool music, even if you guys have to look a bit harder to find it from less toxic artists now. Your compassion will help shape the new music going forward. Distancing from Grimes will make room for ethereal singers who aren't corrupt. (Hopefully they'll stay that way fingers 🤞)
Grimes went from being an artistic and quirky girl to an unhinged capitalist techbro princess with insane thoughts esp after she became a mom and got more "traditional". Also her music got bad. I thought she wldve done well on coachella, but nope shes been on an avalanche
@@crazycatlady8285Elon doesn't care about kids. He just thinks that his DNA is so unique that he is doing the Earth a favor by ''spreading his genes''.
Im not sure what happened at Cochella, but from what I know, modern CDJ programs adjust the speed of songs for you, but old school DJs can do it by ear. This is a major crux in the DJ community, many people believe if you can't beat match by ear, then you're relying too much on tech. If she was relying on the sync button, then software is doing this by numbers. If your numbers are wrong and you can't adjust the tempo by ear then you'd have to adjust the tempo using numbers like how the software does. If the bmp was doubled, I guess you'd need to make extra steps for you to achieve this matching.
Programs like rekordbox, traktor, etc. analyze the bpm of tracks within a certain bpm range that you can set, so it can either show up as 160 bpm or 80 bpm (which is technically the same). My guess is whoever prepared her tracks did it in batches and didn't double check, and then she obviously doesn't know how to beat match on the fly so the doubled and mismatched bpms confused her
@@SingKahKah Ok, that's the part I'm not really familiar with. I have friends who DJ and just observed them on the decks. It seems like the song on que gets adjusted manually using headphones and visual markers I dont fully understand. It didn't look like she had headphones, and that doesn't seem smart.
@@Reverse_Cat_Cowgirl yeah thats pretty much it, you cue the track as well as you can and the manual adjusting slows down the deck (just like putting friction on a vinyl record makes it spin slower) so you can further line it up on the fly. Headphones are helpful but not necessary tbh, lots of footwork guys dont use headphones
Yup, same with playing in a band that uses playback for background sounds and riffs, you need to match these up to a metronome, most musicians will be able to do this if they actually put effort to their instruments, you can spot a lazy band member easy if they can't do this.
i stand by my belief that grimes always had a reactionary streak or at least was prone to these ideas and it wasnt her being "tainted" or "brainwashed" by musk. like she grew up rich and white with some kind of superiority complex she was already primed
yeah I definitely think the whole activist thing she was doing back in the day was just grifting. she likely knew that appearing as progressive was something she could capitalize off of, so she did
Personally, based on what I've read and heard of her life, it sounds like Grimes is very hyperactive and like a child, has fleeting interests. I believe her activism era was very much real to her, because she sounded genuine, she appeared invested. But it seems she also parrots the interests of her circle, whomever that social group may be. Now that she's with Musk, from whom she seems to be codependent, it makes sense to me she'd mirror many of his views. She just seems like someone very unstable, in the sense they'd have a hobbie one day and drop it completely the next month in favour of the new big thing. Or that's just my appreciation.
i think personally that her activism was semi legit. like i think she did sorta care about what she was saying but it definitely wasnt iron clad or anything. i think being surrounded by nasty tech bros and elon definitely did change her opinions in a way, but i do believe that she was always a little bit misogynistic and racist but just not a full blown nazi, if that makes sense tldr: i think that grimes only partially believed in what she was advocating for but, it definitely was affected by who she choses to interact with
@@voidedcitrus3455 i feel the same, she was a much better activist than most artists and she went above and beyond to be as environmentally friendly as possible. it absolutely seemed genuine and i do believe that she was influenced by elon and his friends, but it's still crazy to me how dramatic the shift was, like she was brainwashed
Nah. She is the same person as him just in different packaging. No one forced her to start dating this man. She found many things attractive about that man. Probably because she relates to him in many ways. And that’s sad, but what’s even more sad is how performative her “activism” appears upon further review.
The interview where we found out her and Elon had secret another kid & her saying they basically lived in a basement & only ate peanut butter was wild to me,
@@jessielou9138Yes!! The article is so funny. The interviewer describes how she went to their home, by which time their first born was more than a year old, but there was very obviously a baby crying and she was unsure about whether or not she was just supposed to ignore that. Then Grimes sort of denied it, but then admitted they had a second one by surrogacy. The article is wild!
@r.h.1988 lmao I mean, the whole Azalea Banks issue was wild af, but didn't think they could go wilder like that. I'm also the kind of fan that followed her for her music and never dug much into her "personal" life.
ikr man like i cannot BELIEVE that the person who created visions was also responsible for i wanna be software 😭 it’s honestly depressing. i just wish she would retire or something
Honestly I think even her best work occupies this boring valley between pop and more bold or overt creative experimentation. One more notch towards the former and it would have more of a catchy radio quality, one more notch towards the latter and she’d have more of a legit FKA Twigs or Kate Bush quality. But instead she somehow finds like the boringest of all worlds by triangulating something between those. At least that’s how I’ve always felt about her music. I hate what she’s turned into but it’s like a weird techy car crash I simply cannot look away from 😭😭😭 I saw her live at edc and it’s so frustrating bc she IS talented and has proven to be a great producer but between the shitty dj sets, weird political takes, and her association with elon, it’s hard to take her seriously.
Ah when you mentioned the custody battles that made me really sad. I grew up within a custody battle that lasted over a decade. I would not wish that on any other child ever. I have serious mental health issues because of the stress it caused, I was so distressed by it that my literal puberty was delayed. I hope they realize sooner rather than later the damage this could cause those poor kids.
1000% percent she should know how to handle it in real time if she were even a mildly proficient dj. Unless she’s djing straight jazz or foxtrots everything should be divisible by even numbers since it’s going to be in 4/4 measures or maybe 6/8 measures if she plays a song with that Gary Glitter beat or the Personal Jesus beat. Frankly, she should at least be able to dj without having to have everything preloaded like its homework assignment. You should be able to dj with a working mixer and sound without even the use of a WAV visualization. Also, having someone doing all your prep work for you sounds like a terrible idea for any club let alone Coachella.
and she definietly isn’t a professional dj, she commented on her tiktok that she’d never played a dj set that big before. so you think she’d actually make sure she was prepared for mishaps lol. that being said, her screaming into the mic whenever she was frustrated was funny af to me. it was a train wreck, but an entertaining one for me
I saw Grimes at Coachella in 2013. I remember being SO STOKED to see her as I was a big fan. It’s really crazy how far she’s fallen since then, I would have never guessed lol
Agreed. It's been a shock to the system. I don't know if she can redeem herself. She would have to get so humble so fast and apologize for a lot of racist crud, but would people even believe her? I don't think I could. 😢
And this video didn't even cover the eugenics fangirling. When you're running around supporting eugenics (which is what Grimes has been doing), that is genuine N@zi shit. That alone would be enough for me to chuck her in the bin (because I'm autistic and so many autistic people were killed by the aforementioned German fascists, eff Grimes for supporting that ideology), but she really is running around supporting some truly repugnant people.
And yeah. There's been even more than that. Grimes and Elon (Elon more than her, but she does her share) follow, comment on, like, and retweet, so many neo-nazi accounts. And like the video said, she said she "loved white culture," which what is that even supposed to mean? And in comments that followed she said the thing about being a human supremacist, and later when someone said something about "white power" she said she was okay with it because "white achievements have been underrated" or "underappreciated" or something like that. Then a bunch of her own friends and followers were asking her to apologize and delete the tweets and she said something like "I'll never apologize for loving the human race," or loving European achievements or some such. And she said the thing about how "it's not like all races haven't had slaves," as though that minimized what white people did.
the most salient summary i've seen of what it's like to be a fan of Grimes' whilst being aligned with her pre-Elon socialist political ideologies and not being a racist scumbag is a tweet that said "She made art angels... she maid art angels: i repeat to myself whilst rocking backwards and forwards on the floor"
Yeah. It's really sad. It kind of devastated me. I didn't get on social media for about two months when she said the most openly racist stuff and wouldn't apologize. And she actually used to talk to me every once in a while on Twitter on her alt accounts. I was in her art Discord and we shared a bunch of art there and it was kind of beautiful. I painted a portrait of her and she liked it. I once told her to be brave leading up to her custody hearing and she thanked me, but asked that I not mention it on Twitter because of the possibility of eyes watching her. I feel weird even talking about it now, but I guess I can since I have abandoned all hope for her.
I loveeeee Grimes’ music, but during the pandemic when Elon Musk was on Twitter spewing anti-vax bullshit, it actually became difficult to take Grimes seriously merely due to the association 😭 It’s sad
it's sad that you can't separate her from Elon. They're two different people. It's also sad that people are still clinging to that precious vax even though it clearly didn't work lol. Every single person I know who got a covid vax got Covid just the same as everybody else.
Man, I’ll never forget seeing an interview grimes did like a year ago where she said she liked the patriarchy because we wouldn’t have food, bridges, or modern civilization without it. 😭😂
....as a european: ...what does Grimes mean by "white culture"...? Multi-generations american with european decent....? If not, I would like to hear her definiton....
@@fattern111no. It doesn't. Black culture, especially in the US, came about under extreme circumstances that forced a label on a lot of people from a lot of different places. They had to form their own culture, much of it in secret. They had to sneak away from horrible people to be able to dance. They were banned from reading, so they had to find ways around that, ways to learn, ways to communicate. They would make songs, go dancing. They created their own dances. That culture very much only belonged to them. And it wasn't some gift from slavery. They created it in spite on slavery, through the strength of their own will to survive. And they fought for their freedom. They regained their equality. And white people have been trying to take it back ever since. There's not a white culture. We didn't all come together and bond as one people based on our skin color, or get forced to do that because of discrimination against our skin color. We're way too fractured to be a culture. There's American culture, and a lot of subcultures, but there's not really "white culture." We don't have a special way to mill wheat that only white people do.
I fear even 45 minutes wouldn't be enough and idk if Kayla has this much mental bandwidth (for covering utter bs let alone organizing this much into a coherent timeline lol) these days (and that's a compliment, like sure it's entertaining but at the end of the day the saga is neverending and she has way better topics to cover succinctly and bitingly
i adore art angels so for me that was her peak but that was almost 10 years ago which is pretty sad. visions was even longer ago and its sad that she really fell out of touch a few years later
Eh, tbh, I really don't like juxtaposing being talent with being rich, awful, and neurodiverse as you put it - neurodiverse people aren't inherently assholes nor untalented, so I wouldve edited that part. Same with the ending - for a lot of minorities, the fascism and her use of her cultural capital to apologize for a man who supports nazis is kind of a bigger deal
Agreed. I'm neurodivergent and I'm not racist beyond what I consider to be the inescapable racist privilege of being born with light skin. In other words, a cop might treat me better than a person with another skin tone, even though I have a somewhat mixed background. I don't want special treatment, but I benefit from that racism whether I like it or not. Being neurodivergent would never cause me to turn into a racist or be so impressionable that I could. I guess when we're kids there's a window of time when we're vulnerable to influence, but she should be way past that.
@@TamaraKane thanks thought I was the only one here who found that distasteful. Tbh, I don’t necessarily see what she did as attributing her racism to being neurodivergent, but I found it bad that Kayla lumped being neurodivergent in with her bad qualities and not with the good ones.

@@JamesLawnerWait what did Poppy do? The last controversy I've heard from her was her involvement in the Mars Argo/Titanic drama, and that was years ago.
I think a big part of the reason Grimes has gone from beloved to mocked is because her time spent with Elon Musk made people realize that her "underground indie kid" aura was always fake. She wasn't ever actually underground or indie, and she's a grown ass woman. When you realize something was fake the whole time, it makes you feel really gross.
I knew things were bad when the way she spoke changed. Little nuggets and terms and whistles that inform me what she's reading online, yknow? For example, in a Vogue interview (I think?) she talked about how a photo of herself kissing a woman went viral and got her a lot of hate on tumblr back in the early 2010s. She proceeds to say this was "before the woke era" so a photo of two women kissing wouldn't be well received back then. I remember thinking what an *interesting* word choice there. 2011 me would've never imagined Grimes and my super Fox-News-Watching uncle would be using words the same way.
Oh, my gosh, this is such a good point and comparison!!! How did she get so lost? It's crazy! For me, I also noticed she gradually stopped talking to her art Discord and artists she had added to alt accounts, like me. It seemed like people had been badmouthing artists to her. Then she came out crazy strong in favor of AI art, and this was one major nail in the coffin of my love for her: She did an interview and the interviewer asked her how artists she talked to felt about AI taking their jobs, and she said, without any expression at all, "I don't talk to artists." 😔
I really felt like, "What the h*ll?!" Especially because she used to talk to her art groups all the time. She would answer our questions and ask us questions. She liked my art. There was community. It was suddenly gone.
@@thecanadakid7622 nope. She went on talking at length. She was specifically asked what artists thought about some of her decisions to basically throw them under the bus in favor of generative AI theft of their jobs. She said, "I don't talk to artists," and cut herself off abruptly from talking to artists, I guess to prevent hearing any criticisms about her backing AI over human beings.
It always kind of mad me sad when people hated her for being annoying and acting odd, because I related a lot to the way she speaks and vocal + physical mannerisms. I'm autistic and it was almost like people were making fun of her for acting ADHD or autistic versus some of her actual (imo) problems. Of course her morals and political beliefs suck so I don't support her.
As an autistic musician who has been the manic Pixie dream girl of many a libertarian tech bro/ burning man guru idiot. Hard relate. I empathize with her and yet I somehow got out before they knocked me up and took me to the scary white supremacist meetings. I barely escaped cult wife dom. But when it got too hateful and shitty I left. Not unscathed but I got out. ❤️🩹
As for the dj stuff: basically in rekordbox (dj software) it sometimes analyses the songs at different bpms or half time. I dj drum and bass; so 174 a likely dnb tempo sometimes is listed as 87 bpm. When you have sync on, it will change the track that’s listed at 87 to 174 (ie syncing the tempo); however it means the sound sounds double speed. The way is an easy fix you just press x2 in export mode in rekordbox. She would have encounter the issue if she had time to practice her set 😅. Most DJs know how to dj by ear (with visuals - vinyls is not for everyone) and don’t 100% rely on sync; like it’s a case of just turning off sync, reloading the track and then making if as she stayed 173 (what sub focus usually is) just 86.5 . I have a phone with a calculator. The other issue is she outsourced her rekordbox prep - which I get it’s annoying but like…. Girl no 😂.
She also mentions the sub focus track reading at 134 instead of 173 which is weiiiiiird; as I dj him a lot and his transients (ie where kick / snare) are prominent making it easy for rekordbox to pick up the tempo. So that is honestly really odd to me. But yea an easy fix would literally just turn off sync and then wait for a moment in the track that has no beats to blend in the next track at any bpm; 3000s (standard for headline shows) make it really easy to do beat jumping and looping but that I would say is more intermediate. Which again…I get she’s busy and has a lot going on but a dj 101 would have saved this 😅
Also if she had just stfu and concentrated on fixing the problem instead of whining and screaming like a child at the crowd who *paid* to see her perform. Like saying "this is not my fault, but I'll take responsibility" is not taking responsibility. 🙄
New sub. You’re doing a great job kid! Also sorry if that offends you but at 40 everybody is a kid to me now. You have a great no-nonsense, unbiased point of view and I like your rather droll delivery. Cheers and keep up the good work. P.S. I was a young hip kid in a hip college town when Visions first dropped in 2011. And let me just tell you: she was absolutely a trailblazing, unique, one-of-a-kind thing at that time. That album is fully a 10/10 masterpiece and even though she has followed it up with decent stuff, the best thing she ever could’ve done was drop that one album and fade intentionally into obscurity Jai Paul style. Her myth would be legendary and people would talk about her like she was a musical deity til the end of time. Some people are better left behind their personae in this regard.
I miss that version of her. Wild girl. Like Anne of Green Gables. Instead now she's just a racist. It's so reductive. It strips away a person's identity.
@@TamaraKane i don't think she became a racist, I think she's always been racist, it was just more hidden. She always did cultural appropriation and treated other cultures and ethnicities as dispensible.
Fantastic video as always Kayla! I discovered Grimes music in 2020 and love it, and found her quirks quite charming .... then I dug deeper and holy Jesus .... and this video just reminded me just how much she fell. Sad times.

IDK, I would say that Grimes and her art is „weird stuff for ppl who like a bit of weird aesthetic, but just a bit”. Easly digestible weird stuff. It does not mean it is bad, but it’s mean it is not so unique neither.
This. I feel like even her best stuff was just a stopgap for finding more interesting music whereupon you proceed to never look back. So I get being really into her at a certain (younger) period in your life, or for a season or something as an adult. I don't think it's bad but people who act like she was so groundbreaking and creative really bring out my inner music snob.
@mb7626 dude same. To hear people talk about it, you'd think she was the 2010s Aphex Twin or something but to me, her music has always sounded v poppy.
Same. I mean, part of me didn't want it to happen at all, but I kept seeing this descent and I had to wonder if anyone else was seeing it, too. So many of the comments on her posts still seemed positive and oblivious. There are still some holdouts, too. I wonder if it will ever be a wakeup call. Like "Woah. Maybe racist fascism was a poor life choice." It's not looking like it so far, though.
I was a big fan of Grimes' music, honestly Art Angels was one of my fave albums of 2015. I even saw her perform a set at a music festival and it was really fun! So imagine my surprise when I learned she was dating Musk. And then things got worse and worse and I just... yikes lol.
I will always love Geidi Primes, Halfaxa, Darkbloom, Visions, Artangels and some songs of Miss Anthropocene. That being said, it's sad what has happened with Grimes. I know she was always eccentric, but she's said a tooon of tone-deaf things currently.
they fell out of love once people started waking up to the fact that yt mediocrity & yt privilege are a thing, even if this realization came only to their subconscious. even the scream she let out when she realized she was not a good DJ was mediocre lmfao
pronouns do really suck, it's the most hypocritical sh*t there is. From a bunch of people who for 40 or more years fought to just want to be looked at as normal, a new generartion now demanding you treat them distinctly different or unique and give them special titles, that no one cares enough to do and then scolding them for it is super cringe. It is the abosolute opposite of what the gay community pushed for, for decades. It really solidifies the new generations narcissism and need to feel special, how entitled is it that you want to change the way 99% of people talk for 1% of the population to feel special then throwing tantrums when they are not doing it.
Kayla my dear, I love you and this channel. your meticulousness is so appreciated for those of us fascinated with pop culture as if it were academia. You have a bright future and such a bright present.
used to love her music so much especially Visions although the quirky indie persona always struck me as performative even b4 i knew she was a rich kid. this is pure speculation but i feel like she's given herself long term brain damage from stimulant abuse or something of the sort. she'd always brag about how she recorded Visions in 2 weeks during an adderall binge. whether that's true or not (2 weeks sounds impossible to me even if she was on pure freaking crystal meth) if she was abusing those drugs back then you know it's not gonna get any better once she's famous & under compounding pressure to perform. the way she acts online now + the way she can't even get through a simple DJ SET without falling apart , everyone says her music has gotten bad, idk something about it really reminds me of some people i know who abused uppers long term & now they're just kind of a deepfried shell of their former self. no amount of money can save you from neurotoxicity..
as someone in art college when Art Angels came out, it was HUGE. i personally loved her music. when the Elon Musk stuff happened, she turned into an absolute weirdo
With Grimes' descent into the depths of the alt-right swamp, the person I genuinely feel bad for the most is Janelle Monae (singer / actress, very queer, very progressive) who did multiple collabs with Grimes on both Art Angels (the song 'Venus Fly') and Janelle's Dirty Computer album (Grimes did backing vocals on 'Pynk') and had that end up ageing like absolute milk because of a heel turn that Janelle couldn't have possibly seen coming back when her album was released. (Seriously, Dirty Computer came out at the end of April 2018. The Met Gala took place in early May. There was no way she had any reason to think Grimes had anything to do with the kinds of alt-right assholes who were getting dragged on that album).
I was too slow and didnt get tickets to one of her shows in 2015 and i regret it so much. All her bs since then… it’s truly too much for me and I would never see her now. Wish I could’ve seen her before elon
Ahhh so glad you covered this I lowkey wish it was longer cause there’s so much there and honestly would love more detail; I also think you’re really fair and nuanced!!
It's funny how the crowd wants artists to be original, mind-blowing, and, most importantly, genuine with their fans, while also expecting these artists (whose minds obviously work differently) to be normal and mainstream in their lives. Artists become famous and attract people's attention because they are different. Judging artists for the names they choose for their kids, the books they read, and the things they do doesn't make any sense at all. This unique perspective on life is what makes them who they are and allows them to create the outstanding art they make. It's so simple. Otherwise, they wouldn't become who they are.
Nobody wanted Grimes to be normal, her being quirky and weird was literally her shtick. Fans just didn’t want her to date an evil manbaby capitalist and sprout n*zi talking points.
Honestly, I don't even think she's neurodivergent. She has never come out and said she was. As someone who loves clout and getting attention for being "different", she would be the first to blast an official ADHD/autism diagnosis. Projecting that she's neurodivergent is what's harming the community.
@@michelleh.5225 I appreciate what you’re saying, but so many of us remain undiagnosed. We have to remember the numbers are so much higher than what is reported. So even if she doesn’t disclose it, we have no idea, so we have to do better at making spaces neurodiverse.

yeah Pitchfork was OBSESSED with her. honestly creepy, since it was all these white men in their 30s and she was in her early 20s at the time. I think they were chronically online incel bros that had seriously never met a real woman. I'm sure they were crushing hard on Feist, Cat Power, St Vincent, etc, but those women were much less accessible since they didn't use social media like Grimes did. It honestly infuriated me as a WOC because it made me realize how these white men put white women on pedestal (albeit in a sexualizing, objectifying way) and never even give non-white women the time of day, much less support WOC in the indie music industry.

Grimes and her ex-husband have done a lot of harm to many people, but as a Ukrainian woman whose life depended on Musk's decisions, I can say that Grimes' transformation and her love for Russian culture scares me. If you've been following colonial discourses, in recent years people have been shouting that it's not normal to romanticize Russian culture and okay Claire studied Russian at uni where without context from people who suffered from that culture I understand why she might like it. But all her quotes about wars about victims of genocide like water dehumanizes us, it's terrible, and her attitude to victims of genocide and love for Russian culture takes on a new context with how white supremacists see Russia and the genocide it commits as anti-woke America. So Grimes was never an anti-imperialist, she was a privileged Canadian girl who studied Russian culture and romanticized it and communism in her work.
On the other side of this; what Russia is doing in this present day doesn't vilify the study of Russian history, literature or language. People like you act like everything Russian should be wiped from history and it's ridiculous.
@@ironwolf56 well said!!! post-soviet mentality and some character traits of that nation do actually cause harm, while stuff like meat jello, kalinka and the language obviously don't.

@@SingKahKah is footwork the Chicago dance that's similar to Detroit jit?
Or that's just my appreciation.
i think personally that her activism was semi legit. like i think she did sorta care about what she was saying but it definitely wasnt iron clad or anything. i think being surrounded by nasty tech bros and elon definitely did change her opinions in a way, but i do believe that she was always a little bit misogynistic and racist but just not a full blown nazi, if that makes sense
tldr: i think that grimes only partially believed in what she was advocating for but, it definitely was affected by who she choses to interact with

Nah. She is the same person as him just in different packaging. No one forced her to start dating this man. She found many things attractive about that man.

I'm watching this video with almost zero context regarding Grimes and had to pause after hearing "We'll get to the N@zi stuff"
And she never did get to it.
the most salient summary i've seen of what it's like to be a fan of Grimes' whilst being aligned with her pre-Elon socialist political ideologies and not being a racist scumbag is a tweet that said "She made art angels... she maid art angels: i repeat to myself whilst rocking backwards and forwards on the floor"
Why is this me tho omg 😭 😭 😭
What is for example "black culture" then? Sounds the same kind of weird!
We're way too fractured to be a culture. i adore art angels so for me that was her peak but that was almost 10 years ago which is pretty sad. visions was even longer ago and its sad that she really fell out of touch a few years later
art angels is a good album as well
Eh, tbh, I really don't like juxtaposing being talent with being rich, awful, and neurodiverse as you put it - neurodiverse people aren't inherently assholes nor untalented, so I wouldve edited that part.
@@elgranespejo agreed.
As an addendum, give your kid a name that's not impossible to spell because you wanted to be creative and edgy. Sincerely, someone who's name is spelled at least a dozen different ways.

@@JamesLawnerWait what did Poppy do? The last controversy I've heard from her was her involvement in the Mars Argo/Titanic drama, and that was years ago.
@@LyraAurora She still makes music, and her last video was posted like 4 months ago.
Then she came out crazy strong in favor of AI art, and this was one major nail in the coffin of my love for her:
She did an interview and the interviewer asked her how artists she talked to felt about AI taking their jobs, and she said, without any expression at all, "I don't talk to artists." 😔
I really felt like, "What the h*ll?!" Especially because she used to talk to her art groups all the time. She would answer our questions and ask us questions. She liked my art. There was community. It was suddenly gone.
And she made art, too. Hand drawn art.😢
@@TamaraKane maybe having a few kids she had no time for it anymore, you don't have time for everything forever.

Not the azealia banks at the end
😭😭
Grimes sailing down a river still makes me cry if I think about it too long. It's so fucking stupid and hilarious
Sad times.
I implore ppl to read that reddit thread that Kayla linked in the description! I am genuinely at a loss for words on how I feel after reading that thread.
yep I'm only like a tenth way through it and it is straight up depressing af

Because rekordbox analyzed the internet at double speed.

And then things got worse and worse and I just... yikes lol.
I love her first 3 albums, artangels is great, miss anthropocene was amazing but honestly nothing will beat halfaxa/darkbloom/visions era 2010-2014
Can you do a how the internet fell out of love with the Jonas Brothers?
Ooh, yes
People need to understand that "quirky" and "Weird" is not synonymous with good.
I will always love Geidi Primes, Halfaxa, Darkbloom, Visions, Artangels and some songs of Miss Anthropocene.
That being said, it's sad what has happened with Grimes.
I know she was always eccentric, but she's said a tooon of tone-deaf things currently.
Damn, so early! Anyway, when will you make the Josh Peck episode?
Also her song, "Flesh Without Blood" is one of my favorites from her earlier music! ❤

It is the abosolute opposite of what the gay community pushed for, for decades. used to love her music so much especially Visions although the quirky indie persona always struck me as performative even b4 i knew she was a rich kid. this is pure speculation but i feel like she's given herself long term brain damage from stimulant abuse or something of the sort. she'd always brag about how she recorded Visions in 2 weeks during an adderall binge. whether that's true or not (2 weeks sounds impossible to me even if she was on pure freaking crystal meth) if she was abusing those drugs back then you know it's not gonna get any better once she's famous & under compounding pressure to perform.
the way she acts online now + the way she can't even get through a simple DJ SET without falling apart , everyone says her music has gotten bad, idk something about it really reminds me of some people i know who abused uppers long term & now they're just kind of a deepfried shell of their former self. no amount of money can save you from neurotoxicity..
as someone in art college when Art Angels came out, it was HUGE. i personally loved her music. when the Elon Musk stuff happened, she turned into an absolute weirdo
This has nothing to do with alt right or politics.

The fact that this video could have been two hours long and still wouldn’t have enough information
Idk why but I haven't seen any of your videos in ages! I have lots to catch up with:)

Grimes strikes me as someone who uses their neurodivergence as an excuse and is therefore harming the community 😢
Honestly, I don't even think she's neurodivergent. She has never come out and said she was. yeah Pitchfork was OBSESSED with her. honestly creepy, since it was all these white men in their 30s and she was in her early 20s at the time. I think they were chronically online incel bros that had seriously never met a real woman. I'm sure they were crushing hard on Feist, Cat Power, St Vincent, etc, but those women were much less accessible since they didn't use social media like Grimes did.
Real shit
On the other side of this; what Russia is doing in this present day doesn't vilify the study of Russian history, literature or language. People like you act like everything Russian should be wiped from history and it's ridiculous.
