I am an engineer. My job is to create things that are as functional, as beautiful, as durable, as reliable, as light and as cheap as possible. So there is a very delicate balance between all these criteria and, apparently, the people from Kentucky have found it while designing and building the ZR1. My hat is down to them.
@@Handgun777yeah, very true, imagine some older sport/super cars performance with that and even simply better brake pads nowadays. Would be ferocious.
Dude your totally right man, every turn the tires are screaching riding the edge of the zr1's ability to grip. I have always read or heard that the corvette takes mad skill and is a drivers car, some cars will handle some challenges for you but the zr1 requires mad skill to drive like this guy. Big ups to this guy, stone cold beast.
Personally in my experience I think the corvette is hands down one of the best handling cars, the driver experience is truly amazing and if your a decent enough driver, have good throttle control watching the rpm’s and basically lugging the vette thru the corners, it just responds so well, point and shoot kind of feel! As for the tires screeching, most would when your pushing 100mph thru corners 🙏 as for this video, A superior handling car paired with this phenomenal drive= full bald eagles
Jim Mero really is an incredible driver. He is very relaxed behind the wheel and makes close to zero mistakes. I'm fairly certain that, with more time, he could have a lap between 7:20 and 7:25. I've seen other onboard videos showing much faster laps, but this one is more satisfying to watch.
It's amazing how truly fast this car gets up to speed. I think what's even more amazing Is how fast he brakes down from 179mph off that last straight away...Damnnnnn!!!
Awesome lap, that driver has some BALLS. I'd give mine to race a Vette on the ring. GTR is cool and all but just how do you beat the feel of throwing the shifter, hearing the roar, and seeing the barriers blur by? You can't....... Vette all the way.
GTR fanboys: go away. The GTR is a good car, so is the ZR1. They're also wildly different. If you can't see why someone might choose the ZR1 over a GTR, you're not a real enthusiast. Think about how ridiculous you sound hating on a fiberglass, RWD sportscar with a 640hp supercharged V8 and manual transmission. Get off your weird moral high horses and realize that value for money isn't only measured in performance figures.
I driven both of them and stock I like the zr1 better. the GTR doesn't have a hot and the speedometer is really jacked up they really need to update the interior plus the turbo lag sucks now it is a very fast car from 1st. again was kind of disappointed with it though because the interiors a little bit dated. honestly I would take the zr1 over the GTR.
If a modern electronically-fuel injected turbocharged vehicle has "turbo lag" its the driver, not the vehicle. You keep a turbo "spooled" so it's not starting over from scratch at an engine speed too low to produce the exhaust volume next to spool it rapidly. An you don't wind a turbocharged engine out to the limit before shifting gears. You upshift when acceleration starts to fall off because that's the volumetric efficiency limit of the engine is reached and the upshift should put the engine back in its sweet spot so the load and residual turbo speed and exhaust gas volume are sufficient to bring the turbo right back online again. Overall, since a turbo can not "lag" and is ALWAYS spinning and required exhaust gas energy to accelerate and pump larger and larger amounts of air to a higher and higher level, most "turbo lag" is the driver not being smart enough to use the turbo or thinking the turbo is the only thing that makes power and that "boost = power" automatically. It doesn't. Boost doesn't make power until its sufficient to charge the cylinders with additional air and/or fuel sufficient to produce enough extra exhaust gas energy to first drive the turbo, second overcome the RESTRICTION the turbo and coolers are on the intake airflow, overcome the EXHAUST restriction they add and THEN finally begin making a net power increase. The other situation is when a turbo is mismatched to the engine and vehicle and operating conditions and that usually means TOO BIG. A smaller turbo that spools and reacts quickly will make more USABLE power than one too large and hard to spool unless everything is just right every time.
Impressive stability under braking in cambered corners and over crests and bumps, progressive straightline and cornering grip loss control including during sharp turn ins, excellent high-speed downforce to go flat out on the back straight, all without track wings splitters winglets etc just mechanical grip and clean body aero, also manual gearbox and rwd which maximises driver skill, probably could have gone 7.20 without errors, great car.
The main thing I notice is how well-behaved is the rear end. I started out with a Porsche in 1978 and have been enjoying driving ever since and here you see a machine you can ''Drift'' around Nuremberg and still beat most other production cars costing several times the price, and have fun while you're doing it.

Looking good. Admirable for the budget friendly corvette. We all know what we really want is a Huracan Performante, but this car emulates the Lamborghini driving experience pretty well, which was the whole point of the corvette to begin with. GM made it to do that. Even tge Zr1 is too pricy, but a grand sport can be built into a DIY zr1. All it needs is a procharger, the zr1 calipers and a good aftermarket sport set of shocks (from Koni or Penske) and nice set of sway bars. All that can be had for $50,000 these days on the used market for a low mileage c6 as a base.

Viper just broke the record again... The ACR lapped the ring in 7 minutes and 12 seconds!!! The ACR-X (not street legal) lapped it in 7 minutes and 4 seconds! America for the win!!!!

This guy used a modified seat with cutout and a soft, plush pillow below to support his massive balls. Coming into turns at 175 and revmatching to perfection down to 110 is the masterful part.
WOW! I am, generally, not a great fan of American cars. There are a couple of stand outs and this car is certainly one of those! This driver is truly of stellar capability and has driven this car to the absolute limit. Normally, on this particular track, you don't hear anywhere near as much tire screeching. Here we see the driver wringing every single ounce of performance out of the car and getting an amazing result on the clock! A WIN for American cars!
If I was born into money, Id had mastered that track! Sadly I was born into being disabled and never got the chance to prove my driving skills I gained from driving the back roads of east Tn. I was racing on the "tail of the dragon" when I was 16.... In a Chevy G20 Cargo Van!
Would love to see that somewhere . Can't find anything on the GTR better then a 7:38 but did see this on the vette The 2012 Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1 was tested at the Nürburgring Nordschleife by Jim Mero on June 9, 2011. It was a base specification car with optional super-slick DOT track competition tires (Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure) and non-stock safety equipment. It recorded a time of 7:19.63 (Video confirmed), the 5th-best time ever for a production vehicle
Also, note that this lap was not done on normal road tires. It was done on special Michelin soft compound tires made especially for Corvette and for usage on tracks in dry conditions, and it shaves off 10-15 seconds a lap. Find the other version of this video which has a G-meter on it, and you'll see that the car pulls 1,7G lateral in some corners, as oppose to 1,1-1,3G possible with usual high performance tires. Those tires are basically useless in any conditions other than a dry track.
@ProXJoss What year Corvette did you drive? I have 3 customers with a C6 ZO6s and have been on dozens of rides and it was hardly bumpy and that was without the magnetic ride control. With the Magnetic ride, they are smoother than any other performance car out there. Could be why now Ferrari bought the technology from GM to use in the 599.
Tried over and over and the best i got in forza 2023 was 8:12.00. Tried multiple times with tsc on, off, stability on off, combinations of it. Not sure if i suck, or it theres a big disparity between the scale real life vs digital recreation. Now that im seeing this again, i think after work im going ro make a few more attempts.
I have always had trouble understanding the rules when racing on this track, since this track is the standard for all supercars in terms of its track capability, but if you think about it, cant the driver just drift most of these corners and turns on this track making the times faster since he wouldn't have to break as much? Also do they get the best drivers in the world to do these tests, beacuse some drivers might be better than others meaning if 2 cars are within 2 seconds it matters little.
I guess the fact that ZR-1 was sandbagging by at least 20mph on that long straight wasn't an issue or maybe that the Vette was only cruisin. In a heads up race in the US the GT-R left with it's tail between its legs. lol
I'd say it lost its legs on the uphill at the end of the straight. Plus at the end of some long laps when those brakes were HOT. Just my opinion. Both cars are works of art, I'mm not choosing sides.
+benn454 I belive they changed to pilot sport cup 2 tires in 2012. No engine changes were made to the LS9 in its run. The reduction in times came from stickier tires.
@TiconderogaX not true the top 5 times are: 5th - LFA Nurburgring Edition - (JP) 7:14.64 4th - Dodge viper ACR - (US) 7:12.13 3rd - Gumpert Apollo - (GER) 7:11.57 2nd - Radical SR8 - (UK) 6:55 1st - Radical SR8 LM - (UK) 6:48 the radical is about the same price as the ZR1/viper. The gumpert and lexus are...as u said a little pricey
Does the C6 have a turbo gauge? What about engine oil temperature gauge, water temperature gauge, engine oil temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, cornering Gs, and Bose sound system? The GTR's got those....
Great drive man. Some one handed 120mph and that fast end section 174mph round a long sweeping left, you gotta know the track to do that kinda driving.Well done.Respect.
@wrifraff The reason why is because the supercharger isn't loud enough to hear the only possible way you could hear it is if he accelerated slower so the engine wasn't as loud. But also look at the acceleration and you'll know it's there
Fit and finish? Have you ever closed the door on any vette? How about riden in or driven one? Heat? You don't need it with whats wafting out of the transmission tunnel. Those park benches you'll be riding on and yes on not in because they are utterly flat. My neighbor's zr1 (09) I swear you can feel the frame on the edges. The nose feels like its doing something totally different than the cabin. Also the powerband is preety narrow. Never driven or ridden in a gtr though.
Wow. It may be just a car. But my heart was racing. I could just feel myself stomping on the pedal, in the Chicago loop! All the turns and ramps look just the same =D! The tire squeals and rich exhaust are just nice reminders that the driver is going fast enough. What's with all the trolling? This car and driver are awesome. I almost had to go the the chevy web site to price one. Psych! Porches are awesome too. Psych!
took a giant leap forward for readily available production sports cars in America, and smashed the European competition on Nürburgring lap times, cost of maintenance, and show-room floor price tag. I know a lot of people who were displeased because the ZR1 had a smaller, supercharged V8 compared to the massive block in the Z06, completely disregarding the notion that the ZR1 is faster than a car that Farrari liked so much they named it after the company founder and THAT is a bold statement.
As perfect as this video is, I think the one little mistake he made was probably the best part of it. At 6:30 in this video he goes into a left hand corner but realizes the car doesn’t have enough traction and was gonna run off the track but somehow due to his second nature, fast response, and insane car control he saves it with just a bit of counter steer.
@JellyBird12 The Radical SR8 which set the laptime was picked up from the factory in Peterborough. It was then driven to the channel, through France and Germany (thats 3 countries just in case you cant count) to the Nurburgring circuit where it set the laptime on the same set of tyres it used for the 450 mile trek. The lap is officially recognised by the Nurburgring circuit as the fastest lap by a road legal car. End of story.......
@ellisfreedman but if you think about it, you can tune the ZR-1 to say 800hp with relative ease and beat a veyron regardless whether it has 1 grand, there is an excessive weight difference.
@ProXJoss Just FYI, the C4 goes from 1984-1996 so that is quite a span and nothing close to the C5 and C6 chassis by a longshot. At that time, no car was impressive by todays standards, but they were quite excellent compared to the competition which is why they killed the sales of all of the other foreign performance cars sold here in their price range. It doesn't sell well internationally because it is not a focus. Plus there are taxes on displacement in some European countries.
this might be a stupid question, but does anybody know if there is a way to drive on the nurburgring? any way at all? its been my dream for so long and i dont think it will happen.. but if it could i would b so stoked..
someone messed with the lap times on wiki. hmmmmm it now says that the ZR1 did the 20,600 m course and not the previously stated 20,832 m course. Why was it changed?..
@TiconderogaX the radicals are road legal, you can watch the video of the 6:55 run on here. The car was driven from the UK to Germany for that run. But there was also a lap time set by the Porsche GT2 RS infront of the ZR1. I believe you are right that it was set at a later date. Still the corvette sets an impressive time for a plastic tub with a truck engine. Just aswell Lotus set up the suspension eh? :P nah Kudo's to Chevy
@ChillMood11 It doesnt matter what material its manufactured from! The Radical SR8 is a road legal car (be it at an absolute extreme) which is for use on a road or a race track. Its just another example why British car design is so revered. Do you think its a fluke that 2 British designed cars (Thrust 2 & Thrust SSC) have held the World Land Speed Record since 1983? Then look at the number of British teams who have dominated Formula 1, the absolute pinacle of World Motorsport..............
I was hoping someone could translate those corner speeds into an approximate laptime. In comparison, the mac cornerered at about the same speeds as this ZR1, so I'm suggesting the laptime is around 7:20++ or so?
Available torque (due to gearing) in sixth gear is not enough to overcome wind reistance at that speed. Sixth is basically there for mileage purposes...top speed comes in 5th gear. There just wasn't enough room there to reach top speed. Also note that the track is slanted uphill for the fastest part of the straight, which will also greatly reduce top speed.
My Friend - "I have driven this track about 1,000 times in video games. However, nothing prepares you for actually driving it. The elevation changes, the other cars, it's all so different." You might think you know it, but being on this track is a whole different story. I shotgun yesterday around the ring and it was one of the most scary, but amazing experiences of my life.
@TechnoEvo I think you should post it one more time. You do know the Zonda R is aimed more at people buying a race car than a standard production car, right? It's got the same engine as the race car, nothing for an interior with a roll cage built into it and a rubber fuel cell. It also costs $1.8M. I don't think it meets qualifications for a "production car".
i love watching these clips of the ring , and this is a favorite, but imo you have to take them with a grain a salt so to speak as far as the times go, no doubt if we all had a team of engineers and tyre suspension guys working on the car, not to mention spending days at the ring we could knock 10 /20 seconds off the times(maybe), not saying this happened with the vette but every car has different preparation so it`s hard to compare.

If I was born into money, Id had mastered that track! Sadly I was born into being disabled and never got the chance to prove my driving skills I gained from driving the back roads of east Tn. I was racing on the "tail of the dragon" when I was 16.... In a Chevy G20 Cargo Van!
What kind of disability you have ?
Would love to see that somewhere . Can't find anything on the GTR better then a 7:38 but did see this on the vette
The 2012 Chevrolet Corvette C6 ZR1 was tested at the Nürburgring Nordschleife by Jim Mero on June 9, 2011.
This machine Comes from another planet.. what a Melody.
I love the way this car handles. What a wonderful car. ❤
The Corvette has had an independent rear suspension since 1984, C4 was a 4 link, C5 and C6 are SLA.
Fantastic lap with a great car and great driver.i love this circuit
Hell of a driver 💪🏾
I guess the fact that ZR-1 was sandbagging by at least 20mph on that long straight wasn't an issue or maybe that the Vette was only cruisin. In a heads up race in the US the GT-R left with it's tail between its legs. lol
I'd say it lost its legs on the uphill at the end of the straight. Plus at the end of some long laps when those brakes were HOT. Just my opinion. Both cars are works of art, I'mm not choosing sides.
yes he sandbagged it he only hit 179mph, what a slo poker
How come the latest record for the ZR-1is 7:19 but this one is 7:26? is the 7:19 not official?
+Arya Ahmadi This is a 2009 ZR1. The 7:19 run was done by the updated 2012 ZR1. It's lap video is also on UA-cam.

I belive they changed to pilot sport cup 2 tires in 2012. No engine changes were made to the LS9 in its run. The reduction in times came from stickier tires.
@TiconderogaX not true the top 5 times are:
5th - LFA Nurburgring Edition - (JP) 7:14.64
4th - Dodge viper ACR - (US) 7:12.13
3rd - Gumpert Apollo - (GER) 7:11.57
2nd - Radical SR8 - (UK) 6:55
1st - Radical SR8 LM - (UK) 6:48
the radical is about the same price as the ZR1/viper. The gumpert and lexus are...as u said a little pricey
Does the C6 have a turbo gauge? What about engine oil temperature gauge, water temperature gauge, engine oil temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge, cornering Gs, and Bose sound system? The GTR's got those....
This guy can drive. And this car has amazing performance.
can't tell you how many times I have driven this in simulation...
this is definitely on my bucket list
Great drive man. Some one handed 120mph and that fast end section 174mph round a long sweeping left, you gotta know the track to do that kinda driving.Well done.Respect.
Great ride. 👍 Both, the car and the guy behind the wheel.
@wrifraff
The reason why is because the supercharger isn't loud enough to hear the only possible way you could hear it is if he accelerated slower so the engine wasn't as loud.
End of story.......
does anyone know why the stop point is earlier than the start point? Surely that takes off 4-5 seconds from the actual time.
@bloodyzebbidy
No shit...
Record for a stock car? or what is the record he beat?
this might be a stupid question, but does anybody know if there is a way to drive on the nurburgring? any way at all? its been my dream for so long and i dont think it will happen.. but if it could i would b so stoked..
Три раза пересмотрел. Афигеть. Мне даже через экран смартфона в туалет захотелось. Мужик за рулём прям мужик!
@DrumminDag92 Are you claiming that the GT-R is faster than the Veyron SS?
@iCHARRLZ Except in GT5 my Zr1 hit almost 230mph on the stright
someone messed with the lap times on wiki. hmmmmm it now says that the ZR1 did the 20,600 m course and not the previously stated 20,832 m course. Why was it changed?..
I can feel my testosterone level rising
@TiconderogaX the radicals are road legal, you can watch the video of the 6:55 run on here. The car was driven from the UK to Germany for that run. But there was also a lap time set by the Porsche GT2 RS infront of the ZR1. I believe you are right that it was set at a later date. Still the corvette sets an impressive time for a plastic tub with a truck engine. Just aswell Lotus set up the suspension eh? :P nah Kudo's to Chevy
Plastic? Where? Are you talking about the full leather dash? Or the carbon fiber center console??
The elevation changes, the other cars, it's all so different."
You might think you know it, but being on this track is a whole different story. I shotgun yesterday around the ring and it was one of the most scary, but amazing experiences of my life.
Did he actually need to upshift at 7:15 ? Looks like he only lost time there...
Why is he jumping at 1:55 ?
btw, the time stopped way before the line where the time started. can some body explain?
@TechnoEvo I think you should post it one more time. You do know the Zonda R is aimed more at people buying a race car than a standard production car, right? It's got the same engine as the race car, nothing for an interior with a roll cage built into it and a rubber fuel cell. It also costs $1.8M. I don't think it meets qualifications for a "production car".
Did Walter Röhrl ever drive a ZR1? Would be interesting to know...
i love watching these clips of the ring , and this is a favorite, but imo you have to take them with a grain a salt so to speak as far as the times go, no doubt if we all had a team of engineers and tyre suspension guys working on the car, not to mention spending days at the ring we could knock 10 /20 seconds off the times(maybe), not saying this happened with the vette but every car has different preparation so it`s hard to compare.
@RedRudythe945OH forest gump or simple jack?
