It's because this is one of those games where the timing you THINK it should be, isn't the timing the devs implemented. Once you get past that mental hurdle, the games can look easy.
Some of Ashton's facial expressions during this video were of utter hatred and despair and I have to sadly admit that it was hilarious. There were points where I thought she was genuinely going to throw the controller full pelt at the camera, scream, flip the table and storm off. How she managed to control herself is beyond me. Well done Ashton, top job! Another excellent video guys and gal.
It seems like it's probably a sync error rather than Ashton actually doing something wrong. Other games you've had to emulate have had input delays, and input delays on a rhythm game would be awful. She's a trooper!
As someone who had played fighting games on a competitive circuit online, where huge ammount of care/effort is spent on the whole frame/timing precision and input delay, I spent the whole video thinking whether this might be an emulator error. Especially since they're playing the Dreamcast version, which from what I recall, had a tight input window. Given all that, its still very odd that Pete got the timing right on the first go. And it was actually hilarious, even tho I felt Ash's rage from here. lol
The original game on Dreamcast had really tight input windows and the fraction of delay makes it unplayable on emulators. The PS2 version had fairer timing adjustments and is thus way more playable through emulation. Fun video though wasn’t expecting to see this today!
As a collector and player of Dreamcast games since 9/9/99 this was one game I just couldn't get into unfortunately. I love the weird style but the difficulty was brutal and confusing. Early rythem games were kind of rough and parappa is no exception as well (at least for me)

Likely an emulation issue causing the already tiny input window to be even harder to hit. I remember playing the first Bust A Groove emulated and it was borderline impossible.
I love this game so much. My favorite fact about it is that the singer from De-Lite (the group that did "Groove Is In The Heart", and other lesser-known songs) sued Sega because she thought Ulala copped her style.

Bad luck on both accounts. game's pretty funky though, i love this game. it's also absolutely niche. i would not feel bad for a second. this game is hard to pick up out of nowhere.

Of course Peter is better at this game 😂 We should all remember that he is the undisputed champion of intergalactic dance. He can just channel his inner Han Solo from the Star Wars dancing game, he played a while back.
God I love this game. Spent hours upon hours playing this, Sega Bass Fishing, Virtua Tennis, Soul Caliber, Power Stone and Looney Tunes Space Race. So many good games on that console it's crazy. Just want to say, as Ashton's problems might not have been due to emulated lag as Peter proved by playing well, that rhythm-action games are very much Marmite when it comes to skills. I could never get off easy on Guitar Hero, I feel your pain. EDIT: Finally got around to playing Space Channel 5 and it's as hard as Ashton made it look, had to come back to remind myself how nails this game is.

Guys (and gals), I haven't laughed this hard in a LONG time! Ben and Peter have been my darlings for a while now (since WhatCulture times in fact), but Ashton just made the list. She couldn't stop laughing while she was so destroyed. Hilarious! (I still believe it wasn't her fault because Ben was equally bad.) I wish you all happy holidays and a great start into the new year. Chu-Chu-Chu! 😘
The issues Ashton was having were probably due to a combination of input delay with the emulation (which for rhythm games is basically a death sentence) and the fact that with these kinds of games you either have natural rhythm which not many people have or you memorise the moves which I'm not sure you can do with this game because I haven't played it personally so don't know if it's always the same sequence. I did just watch a longplay and saw the person was hitting the beats according to the music in the background so maybe if Ashton is ever forced to do it again, she could try using headphones and/or actual hardware to see if that doesn't make it better. I do think it really comes down to practice and natural talent, though. Even Peter was starting to struggle as it got faster. I'm a Taiko no Tatsujin player who sadly wasn't born a natural drummer and I'm only just barely able to clear Megalovania on Hard after 2 years of tears and swears whereas others get Full Combo on Extreme after 2 weeks. You absolutely don't need to feel bad if you can't get it right the first, second or even 50th time.
It does help to have a musical ear with these types of games. The final boss of Drakengard 3 for 99.99% of it I didn't find too bad because I learned trumpet growing up and picked up an instinct for time signatures and rhythm, whereas I read about so many people who had to sync it up to a UA-cam video in order to clear it (still haven't cleared it because of that fucking final note that appears when the screen goes black and the music stops). It's probably why I enjoy rhythm games in general. That being said from what I played of Space Channel 5 Episode 2 on PS3 the timing there was incredibly unforgiving because it's based off the Dreamcast version as well I think.
