Good news, we are getting a brand new space channel 5! Unfortunately, it is a vr exclusive, so if you really want to play it, you'll have to dish out a little cash for a vr (I'm pretty sure you can get the windows mixed reality headset for just over £200 though, so it's not **dreadful**)
Space Channel 5 could have been the PERFECT Kinect game. Had been waiting for that, even though I had no interest in the Kinect. Now that the Kinect is dead, Space Channel 5 VR would be the next best thing. If it ever does come out I'm definitely buying it!
@@genasismew8447 yeah, from what I‘ve heard the Just dance games worked really well with Kinect. Would have used a similar mechanic for space channel 5. And for those interested: I didn’t get the VR game. It is nothing like the originals. Very disappointing.
There needs to be a Space Channel 5 rock opera. If they can translate comic (Spiderman), movies (Lion King), books (Wizard of OZ) and music albums (ABBA) onto broadway, then they can do the same for Space Channel 5.
Great job, forgot about MJ's appearance. Pretty cool that he was so into SEGA, I also remember Ready 2 Rumble having that character that looked like him. Sonic 3, Moonwalker and his apparent SEGA home arcade. BTW that groove is in the heart story had me dying of laughter LOL!!
Vr is actually good! I think the reason it's so short because Sega wanted to see if people still showed care for Space Channel 5. Also the voice actress for Ulala is not the original, Apollo Smile. It's Cherami Leigh. So I can see why people were disappointed.
@@tamtee5236 Yes she was. Also these days, she's part of a country duo with her husband, which is likely why she turned down the role as they travel a lot I'm sure. Still does a lot to support her Connecticut community though. At least she's still bringing some jams in some form.
I was literally just saw your PaRappa the Rapper video and was wondering when you were going to do Space Channel 5. Now only a few minutes later, here it is!!! It's like a miracle suddenly grated my wish.
You missed two cameos. Ulala was in both project x zone 1 and 2. If you're looking for more ideas, any of the series in the cross series would be a gold mine for this channel, imo
I had no idea Space Channel 5, Rez, and Lumines were all done by the same person *mind blown* I'm glad I found your channel. The Complete History series videos are awesome!
The minute i saw Ulala, I had an instantly mad crush on her as anyone would crush on a character. And seeing her inspired by a music group in an era I was born with, it blew my mind straight out!
Facts. Being a little kid, I normally only used the Dreamcast collection I had for Sonic, but I decided to try space channel 5 once, and I instantly fell in love. Not only with the game, but with Ulala 😂
A few months ago, when I first moved into my new apartment and didn't even have a lot of my stuff yet, I got some Popeye's Chicken and watched your Kickstarter Games That Ran Away With Your Money video. Ever since then, dunno why, my brain associates Popeye's Chicken with your videos and vice versa. If I get some Popeye's, I wanna watch one of your videos while I eat it. If I watch one of your videos, I wanna eat some Popeye's while I watch it. It's been a very peculiar pattern for me...so imagine my happy little surprise to grab some Popeye's after work and come home to a brand new episode. ...This has nothing to do with anything, I just thought it'd be fun to share. Great video as always, Daniel.
Watched it!! Thank you so much for covering one of my favourite favourite FAVOURITE ever games from my childhood, I was dancing all the way through the video 😄✨ hope to one day get the opportunity to play the VR version 🤞
You can also get an Ulala figure in UFO Catcher machine in Yakuza 5 (as well as Miku and dragon from Panzer Dragoon). She will also get an action figure in a popular figma line from Max Factory. An already painted prototype was shown on winter Wonder Festival 2017... yesterday (it's still going, too).
Played this game (first one) through back when it was new on Dreamcast. I now have the Special Edition on PS2 featuring both the first and second games.
hey man i love your channel and this series of 'complete historys'. I was playing 'Harmful Park' today was jaw dropped by the amazing creativity, animations, artwork, sound and gameplay. Maybe a history of that game will be worth while..because its a holy grail game and one that came from nowhere from an unknown company. imo its the best 'cute em up' ever made.
So y'all remember in Sonic And Sega All Stars Racing when you won a race as Ulala the announcer would say"AND ULALA WINS THE GAME, and uh caaall meeee."I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure there're other lines of him tryna get with the female racers.
Never played the Space Channel 5 games, kept seeing it in the shops back in the day and always wondered what it was. Love a good rythmn game so I'll be sure to check this out. Great video as always and looking forward to next week's Complete History!
I can't believe how many things your channel has a complete history of. I was just randomly searching space harrier before and lo and behold slope's has a complete history, then I'm searching space channel 5 and whaaaaaaaa, slope's has a complete history. And it's always an entertaining story.
Comparing sales figures between completely different generations is deceptive. Also, Dreamcast was cancelled early in its life cycle. I would bet it outsold the Wii U if you compared an equivalent timeframe.
Clips from Megalopolis were reused/showcased in the video The Gate: To the Mind's Eye. The Gate: To the Mind's Eye was the third entry in The Mind's Eye series of CGI showcase videos created by Odyssey Productions. P.S. Clips from the Ecco the Dolphin Game for the Dreamcast can also be seen in the fifth and final main series entry of the Minds Eye series of videos, titled Odyssey Into the Mind's Eye.

We need Space Channel 5 Part 3. Just imagine Ulala cruising through busy city streets while dancing on top of a taxi cab, trying to get the scoop on the next alien/robot invasion. Cue Pudding pulling up alongside on her own car, driven by her fanboy posse. They have an epic dance off, Pudding loses after they whip out the guitars, and she careens into a car parked on the side of the road, halting her in her tracks; maybe one of the Crazy Taxi drivers waiting for a passenger to hop in. They continue down the road, but are then in hot pursuit by Pine's police squadron due to reckless driving. You have to use the directional inputs to dodge cars that come up and try to stop you, and it ends in a 20 car pile-up.
Always a highlight whenever one of your videos shows up in my feed, the evolution of your video production has been astounding, just know your work and effort is always admired and appreciated, to see your channel grow and your quality following suit, another wonderful video Dan, looking forward to any future Disney videos, especially if you've managed to dip your feet into Kingdom Hearts yet.
I have an category of games on my steam account of games that are appropriate for my niece to "play" (She's 3, I play and she watches and holds an old nes controller and pushes the buttons on it) and this is one of her favorites. Her favorite is the remake of Castle of illusion though. She always makes me choose ulala when we play sonic all star racing though.
11:48 While I am a huge fan of both Deee-Lite and Lady Miss Kier, I will be honest that her suing Sega was a stupid move on her part. I think she would have gotten more luck suing the people who made the game "No One Lives Forever" for the PC. 😂
that footage of the space ships from 4:30 also was in this indie film called gate to the minds eye. I would have loved to see its 32x version in all its glory however.
Hmmm...here's a few ideas for Space Channel 5 III: 1. Ulala should be...let's make her 24 years old. 2. Ulala could cosplay as other Sega characters...how would you feel about...let's say...dressing up as Bayonetta and the girls from the Jet Set Radio games? 3. Special guest characters...what do you think? What real live music stars do you want in the 3rd installment? For starters...can we get the Vocaloid girls in this one? And maybe do a deal with Namco Bandai to get the Id@lMaster characters in the game too. 4. Two campaigns, plus maybe a big music list selection. 5. Could the graphics be done on Unreal Engine 4 and/or Unity?
Any chance of doing a Panzer Dragoon Complete History? I consider your Sega related ones to be your best and would love to see you work with an IP like PD.
To be fair, the Wii U was out for almost 5 years. The Dreamcast was out for just 1 (in America, at least). That puts into perspective the sales numbers.
I love this video! I've been interested in knowing who voiced Ulala myself. I might compare voice actresses to see who sounds more like her. The Lady Miss Kier thing is insane, I remember reading about it over a decade ago. The Java game looks interesting, I wanna see more gameplay footage lol I hope you can do a complete history of Phantasy Star Online one day! There's not a lot of compiled information around and it'd be cool to see you do it.
Great vid, im just catching up on a few complete histories. I never did play this back in the day when i had my dreamcast, if i see it though i may get it and try it out :)
Please... Please... for the love of everything good, LET THAT SPACE CHANNEL 5 VIVE RELEASE. GIVE US A NEW GAME WITH PROMISE OF MORE SEQUELS. I'm surprised that I missed that from TGS when I even tuned into the streams.
Great video! I sure hope they manage to make the VR version Space Channel 5 like the one I've been dreaming about for so long. Also May 30th is easily the best birthday, I'm just sayin'. >_>
You could buy Space Channel 5: Part 2 on PC and Xbox 360 as part of the 'Dreamcast Collection' physical release, along with Sega Bass Fishing, Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi.
Is Nostalgia Nerd a roving reporter, along with voice actor, now? Dude's got his own mic and everything. I could never get on with Space Channel 5 back when i had a Dreamcast. I think I needed actual on screen button prompts Parappa style cos I have no sense of rhythm. I should give the HD port of the sequel a go some day. Those games ooze so much style.
Mellow Gaming yeah I've heard that on the first game you have to be exact with the button inputs, but the second game is a little more lenient with the button inputs like maybe about a millisecond off
I don't understand how Lady Kier lost the court case. If she turned down the request to use her image, which it appears they went ahead and did (Ulala looks really similar), it doesn't matter if Sega asked her or not, what matters is she never consented to it.
I wonder why we haven't got the first Space Channel 5 ported to other platforms, we got the sequel though, but what's stopping the first one to be ported over. Anyway. Great video!
Correction regarding Space Channel 5 Part 2, the game came out in the UK on the Dreamcast as planned, it was not Japan only. I know this as I have the game and looking at it right now, blue jewel disc and reviewers' copy of the game and all.
I own this game, but to this day, I can't even get past the first level! Not only do you need to hit the right buttons, but do it at the EXACT moment in the music without any indication! It's like watching a video of Guitar Hero, then playing the song blindfolded... I never thought there would be a game that required a metronome, but here you are... And I'm not saying it's a bad game. I'm just saying I suck at it.
I have the original for Dreamcast, as well as the PS2 port, Space Channel 5 Special Edition, which includes the sequel. Pretty cool series, I love the style of it!
Man when I was 6 I allways played this on the pc whit other games I think it was like a collection as it was a sega launcher that had crazy taxi, sonic adventure dx directors cut, space channle 5 p2 and other games from sega and I played channle 5 p2 all the time as it was a challenge for me
The irony of the situation is, is that women that did the choreography and dressed up as Ulala to promote the game, it would be loosely accurate to credit Ulala as "herself"
Great video, (New to the comment scene here by the way) you say you will review the S.C VR game in the future, but turns out you never got to it, so due to the...err 'Current World E ent🌎' there's never been a better time to look into it eh? History is History after all😀
I am so happy that someone out there still remembers Space Channel 5 in 2017. I am still holding my breath for some kind of remaster/remake/sequel.

Cosmic Vortech Cool! Hopefully Sega will revive some dead but loved franchises on the Switch with its gimmicks.
By all rights, this should have ended on a black screen with one final "Up!"
Am I the only one who wants this game rebooted or remake
I wouldn't mind a remake, but I'd rather a reboot
They're remaking the first game for psvr and the second game can be bought on ps3 xbox 360 and steam

That's such a sad sales record. I love my Dreamcast and still get it out time to time to enjoy.
To be fair, the Wii U had a longer lifespan. 2012 to 2017. So the dreamcast might have outsold the Wii U given selling 11 million from 1998 to 2001.

this was such an awesome video of an excellent and somewhat forgotten gem
Great video as usual but you forgot to mention that Ulala and company also make an appearance in Project X Zone 2 on the 3DS.
That Dreamcast and WiiU comparison is a bit mean. The Dreamcast sold more in the 2 years of it's life than the WiiU did in it's first 2 years.

I'd argue it's more like the Sega Saturn. Too difficult to develop for, but has a strong cult following.

thanks, i just remember how much i suck in bust a move...i mean, bust a groove ...
retrovideogamejunkie hahaha my baf
There also is a hacked dreamcast iso version out there, fully translated in English by using the sounds of the ps2's version.
I will never forget the unforgettable experiences XD
Now there’s a VR version of SC5!
nice video... I think Sega's old serries are good (although space channel 5 I don't know why is so popular)
I wonder why we haven't got the first Space Channel 5 ported to other platforms, we got the sequel though, but what's stopping the first one to be ported over.
Anyway. Great video!
God damn Apollo Smile was fit as fuck.
+Crocmaster McGeezax hahaha yep
Correction regarding Space Channel 5 Part 2, the game came out in the UK on the Dreamcast as planned, it was not Japan only. I know this as I have the game and looking at it right now, blue jewel disc and reviewers' copy of the game and all.
Did you hear about the new SC5 VR project that was released at a Japanese convention in October?
And a lot of cosplayers love to cosplay as Ulala and I can't blame them.
+TG5455 yes. That was a lot of fun to research
Daniel Ibbertson I can tell by watching the video and MJ really loves Sega.
+SPac316 oooo thats becoming hard to find i believe
Ulala didn't cameo in Rhythm Thief. There was just a minigame extremely similar to it.
Man when I was 6 I allways played this on the pc whit other games I think it was like a collection as it was a sega launcher that had crazy taxi, sonic adventure dx directors cut, space channle 5 p2 and other games from sega and I played channle 5 p2 all the time as it was a challenge for me
Space channel is such a hard god damn game
Kirby and the Rainbow Curse Deluxe would be a must-buy for the Switch.
+Alder613 lol its one of the only big wii u games that i do not own
+Alder613 lol its one of the only big wii u games that i do not own
Once again nice vid,i always love all the info i get!Cheers M8^-^
The irony of the situation is, is that women that did the choreography and dressed up as Ulala to promote the game, it would be loosely accurate to credit Ulala as "herself"
19:10 you used silva gunners version of Morolian's Base: Strange Path - Space Channel 5: Ulala's Cosmic Attack
Great video, (New to the comment scene here by the way)
you say you will review the S.C VR game in the future, but turns out you never got to it,
so due to the...err 'Current World E ent🌎' there's never been a better time to look into it eh? History is History after all😀
