@@occono3543 The accessibility settings in TLOU2 was a brilliant way to help people with sight or hearing problems enjoying the game. The Quiet Man seems to go out of its way to insult the hearing impaired.
The way the story is told would make sense if Dane had literally JUST gone deaf, because then it would be simulating what it was like to hear nothing and not yet being able to read lips or interpret body language. But Dane has been deaf for some time, and doesn't seem to have particular trouble communicating, so it doesn't make sense to deprive the players of that information.
This was my thought, as well. I had the episode on while I was doing something else, so I assumed that WAS the case for the first five or so minutes. But once I started paying more attention and realized that, no, he's been deaf for ages, this went from "Huh, what an interesting idea" to "Oh god this is among the most offensive games I've ever seen." So going by the blood on the sheet still being bright red, a person was very recently shot, but there was enough time to drape a sheet over the body, and the guy we can infer to have *done* the shooting is… still standing in close proximity to the body waving a gun around… and somehow this guy becomes a kingpin… makes perfect sense to me.
According to this game, if you're deaf or hearing impaired you're completely unable to interpret the world around you. That's just offensive to a large group of people. The kicker of course is that if you do a second playthrough WITH sound the story actually gets worse. I still suspect they removed the sound to disguise how utterly dreadful the actual story is.
This is supposed to be about showing people who aren't deaf what it's like to be deaf. But because of how it's put together the only people who can understand the game is people who are already deaf, because not many people outside of those who are deaf know both american sign and lip reading, which is required to understand the game. This is made for nobody, the non deaf will hate not knowing whats going on and the deaf will either hate how patronizing it is or just not like how the subtitles (something a lot easier to use than some random sign every so often) are still turned off most of the time anyway. This doesn't teach you how deafness really is, it teaches you that deaf people can't understand anything going on unless it's explicitly written out for them, something completely untrue. I seriously doubt any person with any hearing troubles was involved with this game. It feels like a non deaf persons idea of being deaf and even then thats not done very well.
The WEIRDEST thing about this game is: even when it FIRST came out, there was no groundswell of misguided support for it. THAT'S how much of a categorical failure it was for Square/Enix: even tribalist pricks didn't want to pretend it was a win for "their side."
