As much as I like Del I will always choose JD, I can't put Marcus through that again. First it was Dom, then it was his Dad, and then Anya. I'm not about to let Marcus lose his only son.
Yeah, del has always been there with his comedic lines and everything but I did choose James to survive because like you said he lost everyone he cares closely, his friend Carlos, Dom, his father, and anya so losing James would be very heartbreaking for him
To me Del's death is more significant because JD lost his best friend, and Marcus can understand what his son's going through because he remembers how he felt when he lost Dom in GOW 3. More than likely for Gears 6 JD will still be alive, and it will be both him and Kait who will kill Queen Reyna the same way Marcus did to Myrrah.
I wonder how they will go about this in GOW6. If they will put up a vote like carmine live or die in gow3, just pick one or give a choice in gow6 who you chose to save.

I think that’s cause if JD dies, Marcus has basically nothing. He already lost everyone he cared about but his son is truly all he has left and if you save Del then it’s gone. He no longer has anything to live for and it leaves him an empty husk. His feelings being a reflection of all his remaining loved ones, nothing. That and seeing his son in that grieving state probably resurfaced the memory of Dom’s death.
Ok gears 6 jD lives yet watches his father gets killed logic ile be sad if they kill Marcus of due to the decision we make like saving del will save Marcus yet saving JD will kill off Marcus
Also look at how Fahnz reacted. With JD he just stood there upset but for Del he turned around and put his hand on one of the tires and said GD. That made me think it was the right choice
Don't forget he lost his first brother in arms and the Pendulum Wars, Carlos Santiago. After he himself carried Carlos's body back home after he sacrificed himself to save Marcus, he broke down crying.

The detail in this game is impeccable, especially with the characters of the two Fenix men and how they handle situations of grief. At 1:02 and 2:24, you see both Marcus and James shrug of someone’s efforts to console them about a loved ones death. However, if JD lives (which imo is the better path) Marcus knows that is exactly what he’d do, because he has been through it before. He knows the pain of losing your best friend in battle. He knows how to console his son because of how much of a spitting image JD is of him. Beautiful work.

Yeah JD cant be the one who is gone. I think the Coalition put that choice there to see where fans landed. IMO it should be Del who has to go. I like him, but he's not that important to the story.
Marcus already lost his best friend and wife, and probably mourned them every day for decades. His character doesn't need another person to grieve. Brutal that the story hands Del and J.D.'s fate up to the player.
It was a shitty choice, but one that needed to be made. Either one of them died or all of them died. Kait knew they were fucked and made a desperate attempt for at least one of them to survive the encounter.
That’s exactly why JD dying might be canon. If they plan on ending it at G6. It sets up Marcus to take the Dom route from G3. The war took everything from Dom and he refused to let it take anyone else. I can see him deciding to sacrifice himself to save everyone. I’m guessing that’s why Marcus had a lesser role in this game. Plus Marcus deserves better than to die an old weak broken man. He deserves to go out on his shield.
As much as I like seeing Marcus' reaction to losing his son. I think Del's death is actually more impactful. It fucks up everybody in their squad. Kait is of course traumatized because she made the choice. JD loses it, Marcus knows exactly what he's going through and comforts him. Fahz is even more torn up about it in Del's scene than JD'S, notice how much slower Mr. Shades takes off his glasses. It's those little details that make Del's death scene so good, he really was the heart of the team, the glue.
At that point Marcus lost everyone he cares about. Carlos, dom, his dad, and his wife so losing his son would be very bad. In all honesty I thought Marcus would go down first but seems like the choice between del and jd is up to us

No matter how many times I come back to see this scene, its one of the very rare few that when he repeatedly says no, I cry as I can almost feel what's hanging in the air as he tries to back away, trying to escape the reality of his sons death
Reason why Del death should be canon - Marcus already went though the losing someone close arc so it is repetitive - JD is the next Marcus so going though the same trauma as Marcus once did makes sense -The setup from Gears 4 would be cut short if JD's death is canon
Imma throw this out there. I feel like JD's death should be the canon choice whereas I'm fairly certain Del's death will be canon. Here's why. For me and for the Coalition killing JD creates the most interesting Narrative choice. One it separates the Gears Story from being the story of the Fenix Family. Which I feel is kind of necessary at this point to keep the story that of a grounded human narrative rather than this epic tragedy surrounding one virtually untouchable family. Two JD in Hindsight was kinda clearly being set up for his death the whole game. JD's mortality in the first act is tested twice as he has to very close brushes with death hinting that he's not invincible. Even more so on top of that the mistakes he's made and how the subsequently forced him to push his friends away. Then consequentially needing to be redeemed in the later half. His death in the defense of the friends he hurt would have been that Ultimate redemption his character was trying to get. Thirdly Del as the protagonist for game 3 creates a very interesting prospect. It takes away the rehashing feel that would be JD stepping into his father's shoes to end the war and avenge his friend which I'd exactly what we saw in the previous gears trilogy with Marcus. Exploring who Del is as a character beyond his relationships with his friends interests me more than finishing JD'S redemption arch and seeing him become the great man we all know he's capable of. Watching the Everyman in Del step up to the plate is new and fresh and the game centered around him would really reflect that. No longer is he just the supportive friend he's gotta carry torch and finish the fight like Sam in the Lord of the Rings. Plus getting to know more about Del is more interesting than rehashing the Daddy issues and Bearing the weight of the World nature we're going to continue to get from JD in gears 6. I almost feel like The Coalition decided they were gonna kill JD but then just couldn't go through with it so they made us choose as a cop out.
The world didn't take Dom from him, Dom killed himself because unlike Marcus (who had Anya) Dom no longer had Maria and no longer had a will to live. Anya I could understand though.. she died from the complications (although she understood the risks). Same for his dad.. but that was for what he thought would be the greater good.

You can tell by the writing alone that the director wanted JD to live over del, it just doesn’t flow right if jd dies Edit:Think about it, he’s just like Marcus, his slip up costed lives and now he has to live with his mistake, he realized that he can’t always be in a dark place cause of his past so he was building his character because of that. He had way more development in G5 than del, all del did was play the nice guy with kate.
I got really emotional with the del dies bit as much as I loved del it's when jd just looks at Marcus and I think Marcus remembered how it felt and just to see him go through that even though he tried to hid it he couldn't, broke my heart such good story telling they got this part spot on.
Marcus Roberts I chose to save del coz it made more sense for Kate to save him and not jd coz they were kinda fighting a lot and Kate spent most off the campaign with del so it makes more sense
Who really cares for Del though? he's just a generic slapstick character. In fact, both JD and Del are the most FORGETTABLE characters in Gears. Only saving Grace for JD being what he means to Marcus. They missed me with the character development of the next gen COG All this death did was just enhance Marcus Fenix even more--which is a good thing
The thing about Losing Del over James, isnt about, Del not seeming important enough or Marcus losing another family member, it's about who you feel takes a bigger hit to the gut. Would you rather let one of the Oldest Grub Killer lose the very last thing he has close to a family, or do you let JD and Kait lose one of if not the closest thing to a friend they've ever gotten since leaving the Coalition, the one who was there for everyone when thing went sour, the guy who tried his hardest to put a smile on everyone's face through the hardest battle they've ever fought yet? Both loses are massive to their own credits, neither one feels more important to the other, it's just a matter of, "Are you willing to make sacrifices others arent willing to make themselves?"

I love that in both scenarios John DiMaggios fantastic voice acting of Marcus conveys such emotion in so few words. I’m not afraid to admit I cried in my play through when Marcus found out he’d lost JD.
It's a touching moment when Marcus and JD hug. You can see that Marcus knows exactly what's going through JDs mind. The mix of emotions from burning rage to overwhelming sadness. His giving his son what I think Marcus needed as he went through all that trauma, just a hug.
Ile still play both storyline if they chose to go a double playthrough but it means somone else dies Why do I feel like we save JD and they kill Marcus of If you kill JD marcus lives but robably loses baird or Cole if they kill the OG gears off including if the hive busters team up and Cole trains daughter fights its gonna get interesting if they team up
i feel dels death makes more sense from a gears of war angle gears has always been a story of brothers in arms and having to deal with losing them first it was Marcus with Dom and Now JD With Del it makes more sense that way honestly don't know why it's multiple choice when the obvious canon death is Del if in gears 6 they go with JD being the one who snuffed it that would make no sense.

During my co op run with my brother, we misinterpreted how the choosing part works, but kinda rolled with it at first. We both sat in the most stunned and emotional silence I think we have ever had until we saw Marcus react to what we had done. Almost with tears in our eyes we both looked at each other and agreed to immediately re-do it. We could not stand to see Marcus so broken. Still can't. Breaks mah heart. Still really killed me to see Fahz broken up, too, though. I like Fahz.
The guidebook confirms that Del's death is the canon one, so I hope they have a single story they focus all their efforts into instead of splitting the game in half.
I think that what really sells the "Del's death" scenario and how Marcus reacts is how he can trully feel the same pain JD felt from losing a close friend on his skin because of Dom. At the same time they're not *just* squad members who've grown to become close friends, since Marcus is JD's father, so there's also the added weight and responsibility of that. The best way i can tangibly define the situation is this: not only do you have to see your son crying and suffering from a loss much like a loss that once tormented you, you'll also have to bear the weight of reliving your own loss since you'll automatically empathize and thus project yourself into his place, all the while having to swallow how powerless you are/were about the fact and not being able to help your son to brace for the inevitable loss of hope and absolute destruction of spirit yet to come. And lets not forget that all hell's breaking lose while you two crumble to dust inside your own heads, so in the end of the day you both would STILL have to clad your heart in stone and move out as if nothing ever happened. Now consider that this actually happened in our world, not once, but many times in all the wars humanity has ever fought. Lost, nameless soldiers who died way before the enemy ever got their hands on them. If that shit doesn't get you, i don't know what will.

I think the ending with Del not making it is the more emotionally resonant cutscene. I didn’t think losing Del would make me cry but god damn it the story for Gears 5 was so well done. I chose JD because I couldn’t do that shit to Marcus. The man’s lost his father, wife, I wasn’t about to let him lose James Dominic Fenix.
It doesn’t matter who you choose, JD just makes it all the more emotional. You have the touching father-son moment if del dies and your heartbreaks when Marcus finds out JD died.
We aren’t talking about Dom’s death OR who’s death is canon. I simply stated that it doesn’t matter who you choose in regards to these extra scenes, JD just makes it more emotional whether Del or JD dies.
I think most players here will choose to save JD, simply because we’ll have more emotional attachment to him. We played as him throughout the entire first act, seeing him go from his go lucky gears 4 self to a somewhat no nonsense captain because of what he tried to pull with the hammer of dawn, players will probably feel bad for him. Also, he’s Marcus’s son, and no one wants to put Marcus through anymore pain than he already has been.
0:30 was the most painful gears moment for me since Dom's death, Marcus Fenix, a man known to be legendary for his Fearlessness is terrified, both choices hit me hard but right when I thought the emotional bits were over, both of Marcus's reactions hit me like a truck 😭
You can tell Fahz was really hurt by dels death because they were becoming friends and he wanted to be the one to save him for a change but will never get that chance
I saw a video comparing his reaction to doms death to JD’s. I thought the reactions givin had different reasons. Dom was his brother. They went through IT ALL together. By gears 3 yes they made it so far and haven’t lost their lives, and death was also lingering behind them. But the thought of actually losing dom wasent there. When it happened it was strictly emotions of shock and disbelief then acceptance. For JD his emotion stem of that of a father losing his son. You don’t scream, you don’t go bezerk. As a parent you are speechless. Especially with how Marcus and JD’s relationship was rocky, banging heads, for the majority of their lives together. Seeing the tags just made him feel like a complete failure as a father. Despite going through so much war, drawbacks in missions, failed operations, this is the first time he actually felt DEFEATED. He lost. I’m sure when Anya passed he made a promise to her to keep their son safe, and when he couldn’t even do that (I’m not blaming his for his death but when they had a talk on how JD always had “something to prove” you can tell on the back on marcus’ mind that JD would do something extremely risky that could ultimately cost him his life and Marcus felt he didn’t do enough to keep him from avoiding the inevitable) marcus finally cracked. When I saw him take the tags I saw the same defeated and tired face that dom had in the trailer ashes to ashes for gears 3 right when a locust was about to kill him. Marcus’ was done with the war.

Either way I think it'd be fucked up for her to choose jd over del. That'd be like Marcus choosing baird over Dom. You don't play as Marcus so I'm not going to think from Marcus's perspective. Do I want Marcus to lose his son? No but it's much better storytelling if he does given the context. Asides Marcus is getting old and I have a feeling he will die in the next one JD's death will give him a score to settle and a reason to fight.
@@deaconoob That's just it. He already settled his score with Myrrah when Dom and Adam died. His story is over. He needs to pass the torch. JD was given character development throughout the new Gears, especially 5. What better way to bring it to a climax than to have him lose his closest friend? He also has a bit of unresolved plot involving Baird and his (JD's) redemption. It's JD's turn to settle the score with Reyna. Del on the other hand is literally a side character. Despite him being Player 2 for basically all of Gears 5, he's had little to no development ever since 4. There's nothing unresolved when he dies.
I really hope James living is the canon route that we’ll keep as we move forward into Gears 6. Sorry Del, but it just hurts too much to see Marcus continuing to lose his whole family one by one. I fear James dying might be canon though, as it would set up Marcus for his own heroic death at the end of the story. :(

I saved Del, didn't really think about Marcus, I just focussed on Kait and Del's relationship throughout the game. They were close and he trusted her and decided to go with her on her mission to find answers. I have no idea how they're gonna decide who you play as in Gears 6 though, so strange making it multiple choice.
They wanted us to see Del and Kait relationship trough the whole game so we can feel more sad over Del’a death, you will get mad but Del is the one confirmed canon by the team not JD
I could imagine if Anya was still alive seeing her child died she’ll be broken down screaming and crying into Marcus’s arms pleating for JD to come back.
Too be honest if they kept Anya alive that will probably break everyone's heart gears is a made up fucking game it don't matter which is cannon but it will be great if they kept Anya in seeing her flesh and blood lying on the floor will probably kill her from shock then Marcus breaks down and nearly has a heart attack from being old
Axel Camargo that’s why its the preferred ending... Del is like the Baird of this trilogy cuz of his intelligence BUT we can’t forget the strained relationship between James and Marcus. Given that, if Del dies, it’ll be exactly like when Marcus lost Dom, so Marcus and James could start bonding again and fixing their relationship by the fact they both suffered the same fate.
It was a no-brainier for me, I choose to save James Easily. As for Del, well he was a friendly, caring, character but overall a very bland character, just like Kait, but less entitled, ignorant, and annoying. After watching both of these cutscenes, saving James works a lot better in terms of character arcs. Marcus went through the same thing losing his brother in war Dominic, so it's poetic to see James go through something similar and for Marcus to be there to help James. Why the hell was this a multiple choice was quite stupid in my opinion.
Just my opinion, I think it's poetic as well having Marcus to turn just like Dom, it shows us the price and meaning of war besides with this move we could have him as a protagonist again. Please don't be ignorant this is just an opinion take it as it is.

It really hits hard when you realise that when Marcus looks at JD he sees himself when he lost dom, nobody was there for him so the realisation that his son just lost his best friend and he understands the pain so he hugs JD. Very powerful scene that a lot of people dont realise how deep it goes
Honestly the people saying JD should die are so wack. Here's the thing: Del isn't bad, he actually became interesting in this game, but he's still literally just the loyal friend and comic relief. He has no character arc to finish because he never had one to start with. He has always just been assisting in someone else's story. While he's loyal and funny, he has no development that's going to make him a key player in the bigger picture. Now JD became a very interesting character in this game. Why? Because he's flawed, a trait both Del and Kait lack, which in turn makes them boring. Characters with no flaws are not interesting. Remember how Marcus was in a goddamn prison in Gears 1? THAT establishes him as flawed right from the bat, because he EARNED his situation through mistakes. The first game is largely a story of redemption for a disgraced former hero. JD has a similar path here, where he makes mistakes and is changed by those mistakes, both physically and mentally. His arc, if ended in gears 5, is utterly wasted. The ultimate redemption is JD stepping out of his father's shadow and becoming the leader he was meant to be, and part of that is recognizing his flaws. His desire to be a hero and be perfect is what led to his mistakes... Though I will point out that the writers reeaally tried hard to make us hate JD and it felt so forced. Idk about anyone else but I was in the Marines for 6 years and everyone's reaction to JD firing on the protesters was dramatic to say the least. Comicly and absurdly dramatic. You see something everyone in a leadership role is taught is that you will have to make split second decisions in dangerous situations. These choices are supposed to be done with the BEST AVAILABLE INFO at hand, AT THE TIME, and it's very possible in hindsight they could be wrong. In the UCMJ it literally states that decisions can only be judged based off the info that was available at the time. Del being an officer in the army and knowing this, makes his reaction seem completely unrealistic and downright silly. Not for nothing he's also JD's best friend. That whole storyline was just extremely blown out of proportion, and idk, I just did not feel any sort of resentment for JD. The story is very clearly written by some clearly left leaning people who have zero military experience. I bring that up because some use the excuse that JD was/is a bad person when they argue he should die over Del. So A. I don't really buy that at all, because JD being a bad guy was clearly forced on us and we were supposed to just looovee Kait and Del, who are essentially unflawed and have impeccable morality. Idk how much this writing was, eh, social-justice-d up let's say, but I just feel like the lead, straight, cis, white guy being flawed is too convenient when his opposite is the unflawed minority characters. Idk. Also B. You have to address the issue of redemption. Do characters deserve to die for their sins? Or is the just punishment to live with the failure, and grow from it to become something better. Plus, I think The Coalition is just afraid to pull the trigger on killing another member from the OG crew, they keep toying with my emotions though.. that Cole cutscene made my heart stop.
Man, they don't NEED to kill the OG crew off. Having that perspective is what ruins stories. Star Wars felt the need to kill off it's original cast, how has that turned out?
JD’s death is much sadder and literally heart wrenching, you can feel the sour in your gut. Del’s death is alot less sad, but also JD in my opinion is a better character and I hope he’s the one who lives in canon because I want him to be the protagonist again for gears 6.

I had no choice but to choose del. As a father with a 4yr old and a 7th month old son I can't stomach the emotion that comes over Marcus when you choose jd. Even thinking about it..I can't
JD dying is just wrong! Even though we bonded with Del and i liked him as a character.. i could never do that to marcus. When i watch the scene of JD's death and marcus' reaction it makes me cry. No parent should have to experience it.

Both are portrayed well. When Marcus finds out JD is dead he is heartbroken by it but when Kait tries to comfort him he shrugs away and says “we’re not done.” he shrugs his emotions away. When it’s him finding out Del dies he comforts his son. He kind of wants JD to let it out so he doesn’t end up like him having to act tough. Gears 4 and 5 may not be as strong entrees as the original trilogy but I still find them enjoyable. They may not be as horror based or dark tone than the other but they still get the family aspect of it. These soldiers form a bond and become family.
I think it still has a dark tone and horror aspect though. Like how the swarm are kidnapping people and turning them into monsters. And how we saw a mass kidnapping first hand in gears 4 where tons of people were getting snatched up and a kid was begging for help before being snatched.

As much as I like Del I will always choose JD, I can't put Marcus through that again. First it was Dom, then it was his Dad, and then Anya. I'm not about to let Marcus lose his only son.
Yeah, del has always been there with his comedic lines and everything but I did choose James to survive because like you said he lost everyone he cares closely, his friend Carlos, Dom, his father, and anya so losing James would be very heartbreaking for him

To me Del's death is more significant because JD lost his best friend, and Marcus can understand what his son's going through because he remembers how he felt when he lost Dom in GOW 3. More than likely for Gears 6 JD will still be alive, and it will be both him and Kait who will kill Queen Reyna the same way Marcus did to Myrrah.
I wonder how they will go about this in GOW6. If they will put up a vote like carmine live or die in gow3, just pick one or give a choice in gow6 who you chose to save.
And in that sens, it fits well that Marcus understands the pain that JD goes through, knowing he went through the same.

I think that’s cause if JD dies, Marcus has basically nothing. He already lost everyone he cared about but his son is truly all he has left and if you save Del then it’s gone. He no longer has anything to live for and it leaves him an empty husk.
His feelings being a reflection of all his remaining loved ones, nothing.
That and seeing his son in that grieving state probably resurfaced the memory of Dom’s death.

The detail in this game is impeccable, especially with the characters of the two Fenix men and how they handle situations of grief. At 1:02 and 2:24, you see both Marcus and James shrug of someone’s efforts to console them about a loved ones death. However, if JD lives (which imo is the better path) Marcus knows that is exactly what he’d do, because he has been through it before. He knows the pain of losing your best friend in battle. He knows how to console his son because of how much of a spitting image JD is of him. Beautiful work.

As much as I like seeing Marcus' reaction to losing his son. I think Del's death is actually more impactful. It fucks up everybody in their squad. Kait is of course traumatized because she made the choice. JD loses it, Marcus knows exactly what he's going through and comforts him. Fahz is even more torn up about it in Del's scene than JD'S, notice how much slower Mr. Shades takes off his glasses. It's those little details that make Del's death scene so good, he really was the heart of the team, the glue.
And the way fahz has to ground himself by putting his hand on the truck.

No matter how many times I come back to see this scene, its one of the very rare few that when he repeatedly says no, I cry as I can almost feel what's hanging in the air as he tries to back away, trying to escape the reality of his sons death
Reason why Del death should be canon
- Marcus already went though the losing someone close arc so it is repetitive
- JD is the next Marcus so going though the same trauma as Marcus once did makes sense
-The setup from Gears 4 would be cut short if JD's death is canon
Imma throw this out there. I feel like JD's death should be the canon choice whereas I'm fairly certain Del's death will be canon. Here's why. For me and for the Coalition killing JD creates the most interesting Narrative choice. One it separates the Gears Story from being the story of the Fenix Family. Which I feel is kind of necessary at this point to keep the story that of a grounded human narrative rather than this epic tragedy surrounding one virtually untouchable family. Two JD in Hindsight was kinda clearly being set up for his death the whole game. JD's mortality in the first act is tested twice as he has to very close brushes with death hinting that he's not invincible. Even more so on top of that the mistakes he's made and how the subsequently forced him to push his friends away. Then consequentially needing to be redeemed in the later half. His death in the defense of the friends he hurt would have been that Ultimate redemption his character was trying to get. Thirdly Del as the protagonist for game 3 creates a very interesting prospect. It takes away the rehashing feel that would be JD stepping into his father's shoes to end the war and avenge his friend which I'd exactly what we saw in the previous gears trilogy with Marcus. Exploring who Del is as a character beyond his relationships with his friends interests me more than finishing JD'S redemption arch and seeing him become the great man we all know he's capable of. Watching the Everyman in Del step up to the plate is new and fresh and the game centered around him would really reflect that. No longer is he just the supportive friend he's gotta carry torch and finish the fight like Sam in the Lord of the Rings. Plus getting to know more about Del is more interesting than rehashing the Daddy issues and Bearing the weight of the World nature we're going to continue to get from JD in gears 6. I almost feel like The Coalition decided they were gonna kill JD but then just couldn't go through with it so they made us choose as a cop out.

The world didn't take Dom from him, Dom killed himself because unlike Marcus (who had Anya) Dom no longer had Maria and no longer had a will to live. The thing about Losing Del over James, isnt about, Del not seeming important enough or Marcus losing another family member, it's about who you feel takes a bigger hit to the gut. Would you rather let one of the Oldest Grub Killer lose the very last thing he has close to a family, or do you let JD and Kait lose one of if not the closest thing to a friend they've ever gotten since leaving the Coalition, the one who was there for everyone when thing went sour, the guy who tried his hardest to put a smile on everyone's face through the hardest battle they've ever fought yet?
Both loses are massive to their own credits, neither one feels more important to the other, it's just a matter of, "Are you willing to make sacrifices others arent willing to make themselves?"

I love that in both scenarios John DiMaggios fantastic voice acting of Marcus conveys such emotion in so few words. I’m not afraid to admit I cried in my play through when Marcus found out he’d lost JD.
It's a touching moment when Marcus and JD hug. You can see that Marcus knows exactly what's going through JDs mind. The mix of emotions from burning rage to overwhelming sadness. His giving his son what I think Marcus needed as he went through all that trauma, just a hug.

During my co op run with my brother, we misinterpreted how the choosing part works, but kinda rolled with it at first. We both sat in the most stunned and emotional silence I think we have ever had until we saw Marcus react to what we had done. Almost with tears in our eyes we both looked at each other and agreed to immediately re-do it. We could not stand to see Marcus so broken. Still can't. Breaks mah heart. Still really killed me to see Fahz broken up, too, though. I like Fahz.
Gears 6 will have two separate timelines with JD alive or Del just like Wolfenstein with Wyatt or Fergus...
The guidebook confirms that Del's death is the canon one, so I hope they have a single story they focus all their efforts into instead of splitting the game in half.

I think that what really sells the "Del's death" scenario and how Marcus reacts is how he can trully feel the same pain JD felt from losing a close friend on his skin because of Dom. At the same time they're not *just* squad members who've grown to become close friends, since Marcus is JD's father, so there's also the added weight and responsibility of that.
The best way i can tangibly define the situation is this: not only do you have to see your son crying and suffering from a loss much like a loss that once tormented you, you'll also have to bear the weight of reliving your own loss since you'll automatically empathize and thus project yourself into his place, all the while having to swallow how powerless you are/were about the fact and not being able to help your son to brace for the inevitable loss of hope and absolute destruction of spirit yet to come. And lets not forget that all hell's breaking lose while you two crumble to dust inside your own heads, so in the end of the day you both would STILL have to clad your heart in stone and move out as if nothing ever happened.
Now consider that this actually happened in our world, not once, but many times in all the wars humanity has ever fought. Lost, nameless soldiers who died way before the enemy ever got their hands on them. If that shit doesn't get you, i don't know what will.

I think the ending with Del not making it is the more emotionally resonant cutscene. I didn’t think losing Del would make me cry but god damn it the story for Gears 5 was so well done. I chose JD because I couldn’t do that shit to Marcus. The man’s lost his father, wife, I wasn’t about to let him lose James Dominic Fenix.

It doesn’t matter who you choose, JD just makes it all the more emotional. You have the touching father-son moment if del dies and your heartbreaks when Marcus finds out JD died.
We aren’t talking about Dom’s death OR who’s death is canon. I simply stated that it doesn’t matter who you choose in regards to these extra scenes, JD just makes it more emotional whether Del or JD dies.
I think most players here will choose to save JD, simply because we’ll have more emotional attachment to him. We played as him throughout the entire first act, seeing him go from his go lucky gears 4 self to a somewhat no nonsense captain because of what he tried to pull with the hammer of dawn, players will probably feel bad for him. Also, he’s Marcus’s son, and no one wants to put Marcus through anymore pain than he already has been.
0:30 was the most painful gears moment for me since Dom's death, Marcus Fenix, a man known to be legendary for his Fearlessness is terrified, both choices hit me hard but right when I thought the emotional bits were over, both of Marcus's reactions hit me like a truck 😭
You can tell Fahz was really hurt by dels death because they were becoming friends and he wanted to be the one to save him for a change but will never get that chance

I saw a video comparing his reaction to doms death to JD’s. I thought the reactions givin had different reasons. Dom was his brother. They went through IT ALL together. By gears 3 yes they made it so far and haven’t lost their lives, and death was also lingering behind them. But the thought of actually losing dom wasent there. When it happened it was strictly emotions of shock and disbelief then acceptance. For JD his emotion stem of that of a father losing his son. You don’t scream, you don’t go bezerk. As a parent you are speechless. Especially with how Marcus and JD’s relationship was rocky, banging heads, for the majority of their lives together. Seeing the tags just made him feel like a complete failure as a father. Despite going through so much war, drawbacks in missions, failed operations, this is the first time he actually felt DEFEATED. He lost. I’m sure when Anya passed he made a promise to her to keep their son safe, and when he couldn’t even do that (I’m not blaming his for his death but when they had a talk on how JD always had “something to prove” you can tell on the back on marcus’ mind that JD would do something extremely risky that could ultimately cost him his life and Marcus felt he didn’t do enough to keep him from avoiding the inevitable) marcus finally cracked. When I saw him take the tags I saw the same defeated and tired face that dom had in the trailer ashes to ashes for gears 3 right when a locust was about to kill him. Marcus’ was done with the war.
Marcus has collected so many cog tags in his life, the hardest was his sons.
Del being the one to do makes more sense, I like del don’t get me wrong but the story flows better, and damn fauz was torn by it,

Either way I think it'd be fucked up for her to choose jd over del. That'd be like Marcus choosing baird over Dom. You don't play as Marcus so I'm not going to think from Marcus's perspective. Do I want Marcus to lose his son? No but it's much better storytelling if he does given the context. Asides Marcus is getting old and I have a feeling he will die in the next one JD's death will give him a score to settle and a reason to fight.
@@deaconoob That's just it. He already settled his score with Myrrah when Dom and Adam died. His story is over. He needs to pass the torch. JD was given character development throughout the new Gears, especially 5. What better way to bring it to a climax than to have him lose his closest friend? He also has a bit of unresolved plot involving Baird and his (JD's) redemption. It's JD's turn to settle the score with Reyna.
Del on the other hand is literally a side character. Despite him being Player 2 for basically all of Gears 5, he's had little to no development ever since 4. There's nothing unresolved when he dies.
I really hope James living is the canon route that we’ll keep as we move forward into Gears 6. Sorry Del, but it just hurts too much to see Marcus continuing to lose his whole family one by one.
I fear James dying might be canon though, as it would set up Marcus for his own heroic death at the end of the story. :(

I saved Del, didn't really think about Marcus, I just focussed on Kait and Del's relationship throughout the game. They were close and he trusted her and decided to go with her on her mission to find answers. I have no idea how they're gonna decide who you play as in Gears 6 though, so strange making it multiple choice.

Axel Camargo that’s why its the preferred ending... Del is like the Baird of this trilogy cuz of his intelligence BUT we can’t forget the strained relationship between James and Marcus. Given that, if Del dies, it’ll be exactly like when Marcus lost Dom, so Marcus and James could start bonding again and fixing their relationship by the fact they both suffered the same fate.

It was a no-brainier for me, I choose to save James Easily. As for Del, well he was a friendly, caring, character but overall a very bland character, just like Kait, but less entitled, ignorant, and annoying. After watching both of these cutscenes, saving James works a lot better in terms of character arcs. Marcus went through the same thing losing his brother in war Dominic, so it's poetic to see James go through something similar and for Marcus to be there to help James. Why the hell was this a multiple choice was quite stupid in my opinion.

Just my opinion, I think it's poetic as well having Marcus to turn just like Dom, it shows us the price and meaning of war besides with this move we could have him as a protagonist again. Please don't be ignorant this is just an opinion take it as it is.

Marcus's "no's" really hit you hard. He backs away as if JD's not gone until the tags are in his hands.
It really hits hard when you realise that when Marcus looks at JD he sees himself when he lost dom, nobody was there for him so the realisation that his son just lost his best friend and he understands the pain so he hugs JD. Very powerful scene that a lot of people dont realise how deep it goes
Honestly the people saying JD should die are so wack.
Here's the thing: Del isn't bad, he actually became interesting in this game, but he's still literally just the loyal friend and comic relief. He has no character arc to finish because he never had one to start with. He has always just been assisting in someone else's story. While he's loyal and funny, he has no development that's going to make him a key player in the bigger picture.
Now JD became a very interesting character in this game. Why? Because he's flawed, a trait both Del and Kait lack, which in turn makes them boring. Characters with no flaws are not interesting. Remember how Marcus was in a goddamn prison in Gears 1? THAT establishes him as flawed right from the bat, because he EARNED his situation through mistakes. The first game is largely a story of redemption for a disgraced former hero.
JD has a similar path here, where he makes mistakes and is changed by those mistakes, both physically and mentally. His arc, if ended in gears 5, is utterly wasted. The ultimate redemption is JD stepping out of his father's shadow and becoming the leader he was meant to be, and part of that is recognizing his flaws. His desire to be a hero and be perfect is what led to his mistakes...
Though I will point out that the writers reeaally tried hard to make us hate JD and it felt so forced. Idk about anyone else but I was in the Marines for 6 years and everyone's reaction to JD firing on the protesters was dramatic to say the least. Comicly and absurdly dramatic. You see something everyone in a leadership role is taught is that you will have to make split second decisions in dangerous situations. These choices are supposed to be done with the BEST AVAILABLE INFO at hand, AT THE TIME, and it's very possible in hindsight they could be wrong. In the UCMJ it literally states that decisions can only be judged based off the info that was available at the time. Del being an officer in the army and knowing this, makes his reaction seem completely unrealistic and downright silly. Not for nothing he's also JD's best friend. That whole storyline was just extremely blown out of proportion, and idk, I just did not feel any sort of resentment for JD. The story is very clearly written by some clearly left leaning people who have zero military experience.
I bring that up because some use the excuse that JD was/is a bad person when they argue he should die over Del.
So A. I don't really buy that at all, because JD being a bad guy was clearly forced on us and we were supposed to just looovee Kait and Del, who are essentially unflawed and have impeccable morality. Idk how much this writing was, eh, social-justice-d up let's say, but I just feel like the lead, straight, cis, white guy being flawed is too convenient when his opposite is the unflawed minority characters. Idk. Also B. You have to address the issue of redemption. Do characters deserve to die for their sins? Or is the just punishment to live with the failure, and grow from it to become something better. Like Marcus did. Like Adam Fenix did.

The game feels more impactful if JD dies.. everyone loved JD despite his flaws, Marcus most of all and it ties back to Marcus telling JD to not take risks and get the job done.. and now that he's gone (at least in my game) Marcus has another reason to bury a knife into Locust Queens rib-cage. Plus, I think The Coalition is just afraid to pull the trigger on killing another member from the OG crew, they keep toying with my emotions though.. that Cole cutscene made my heart stop.
Man, they don't NEED to kill the OG crew off. Having that perspective is what ruins stories. Star Wars felt the need to kill off it's original cast, how has that turned out?

JD’s death is much sadder and literally heart wrenching, you can feel the sour in your gut. Del’s death is alot less sad, but also JD in my opinion is a better character and I hope he’s the one who lives in canon because I want him to be the protagonist again for gears 6.

Both are portrayed well. When Marcus finds out JD is dead he is heartbroken by it but when Kait tries to comfort him he shrugs away and says “we’re not done.” he shrugs his emotions away.
When it’s him finding out Del dies he comforts his son. He kind of wants JD to let it out so he doesn’t end up like him having to act tough.
Gears 4 and 5 may not be as strong entrees as the original trilogy but I still find them enjoyable. They may not be as horror based or dark tone than the other but they still get the family aspect of it. These soldiers form a bond and become family.
I think it still has a dark tone and horror aspect though. Like how the swarm are kidnapping people and turning them into monsters. And how we saw a mass kidnapping first hand in gears 4 where tons of people were getting snatched up and a kid was begging for help before being snatched.
Didn't feel right letting JD die but I looked at it through Kaits eyes. Del was a better friend.
