as a woman who's been playing all the gears games since 2010, i completely agree that 4 and 5 absolutely suck. i appreciate a very well written story that has characters you can connect with in one way or another (which i did with the og games and no they weren't Anya or Sam or Bernadette). E-Day has me hyped for going back to the Locust War and i'm so excited to see both Dom and Marcus again fighting at each others side. The story is just too good to water it down in the way they've been doing it. BROTHERS til the end
I agree it will be nice to go back but I think if Gears 4 n 5 wrote Kait better no one would complain as much. Also Gears 4 n 5 Horde was the best but Escape was ass tbh n 4 mutiplayer was great but 5 was meh. Gameplay was solid

I remember when I hosted a Gears of War 3 tournament at home. Three friends had brought over their consoles and 36in flat screens. With fully loaded horde and multiplayer games, adding in pop and pizza, it was the best time.
Gears ended with the third one, for me. Once Cliffy left, it became average. Even the graphics became cartoonish. I recall the gaming media mocking the colour pallette, labelling it brown. But that realistic, gritty tone, was Gears. When they started adding robots & the focus was taken away from Marcus, the magic was lost. I don't want Gears 6. I want a complete reboot, with Cliff back in charge. Great video, I completely agree with all your points. Gears was the personification of masculinity, done in a fun way.

Gears 1 2 3 were a heartfelt trilogy following a warhero's perspective as he struggles with ptsd and war grinding up everything and everyone around him. Gears 4 was a melodramatic shooter about the war hero's entitled son and gears 5 is a full on tela novella spin off about the chosen one 9000 who was the entitled son's obvious love intrest in the previous game. The direction of the story isnt even the problem I like a little saucy drama but the writing is so fucking bad they make her LITERALLY say to the war hero's entitled son (who was the main protagg in the last game)"Screw your orders, It isn't about you, It is about me" to this man with 0 fucking nuance as the game starts in earnest.

I just don't agree and over 75% user reviews on multiple platforms like metacritic, steam, and Xbox reviews don't support your thoughts on 4 and 5 . While 4 and 5 aren't as good as the og trilogy they still are good games. Far better than the likes of halo 4 or 5 respectively. Also still waiting on gears 2 and 3 remasters if they happen at all. Here's some constructive criticism from me - I just played the first game and then played the fourth one. The fourth game fails to deliver everything that made the first three games great, apart from John DiMaggio's wonderful performance as Marcus Fenix. This game has no level design, writing for toddlers, ruined gameplay mechanics, braindead AI and do you wanna know how I got to finish Gears 4? 20 minutes of playing interrupted by 20-30 minutes of going to UA-cam to watch a full cinematic of Gears 2. That was the only thing that kept me from uninstalling it immediately after the rock, paper, scissors cutscenes and the 50 "DONT POP THE PODS" lines. The game literally punishes you for playing it and every time I loaded it up I had to every single time close an ad for Gears 5. This shit isn't worth its full price. If it wasn't 5 bucks on Microsoft Store I wouldn't have bothered at all and if Marcus Fenix wasn't in it, I wouldn't have bought it at all. And it kinda feels like the devs knew that and that's the only reason they left him in the game... If Gears 2 and 3 were available on PC, I would've never bought 4. I'm certainly not gonna play 5.

Gears of War E-day just dropped a trailer and it honestly looks like a return to form. Somber music, gritty violence, horrors of Armageddon and most importantly Dominic and Marcus back together.
With companies like Sweet Baby Inc basically having a death grip over the throats of Microsoft and other companies, we might never get a good gears game again.
Considering the events of the last week, I'd say it's the other way around, where Microsoft has a death grip on the studios under its umbrella. Including The Coalition, Gears of War's current development team. Whether or not Sweet Baby Inc has any real power over a game's success, is inconsequential --- Microsoft doesn't guarantee job security, either way. And I imagine morale has plummeted quite drastically, as a result. There _is,_ however, a possibility The Coalition has immunity, being a steward of one of Microsoft's flagship franchise, just like 343i, but there's no assurance of this.

I genuinely miss short, linear, singleplayer campaigns (8-15 hours max on normal difficulty) that are also highly replayable. The problem with modern AAA games is you either get an open world or some kind of RPG with hundreds of hours of padding... or, on the other side of the scale, excessively cinematic, linear campaigns that have only 30-50% of it being actual gameplay. And I hate when the latter is often considered as the same thing as the older, more gameplay-focused games. I love Max Payne 3, but it's certainly an example of just how much things changed across the years from the way games were handled way back in terms of the ratio between story and core gameplay.
Yeah, I was going to play Dishonored 2 but I realized I had a lot of acheievments to get in the first game. I went through the whole game and dlc with energy to play it more as I messed up my ghost run. The game takes less than 10 hours to beat at a casual rate and has lots of replayablity. I tried to play Deus Ex HR but I think its a little too dated or something. I'd like to try the sequel which Ive seen on sale for 5$. These "immersive sim" games they call them are superb imo. They respect your time and have excellent gameplay.
@@iBishopEsquire, I'm almost done with Human Revolution, and, while I agree that certain gameplay mechanics are dated (as some quick examples, tap to aim with no options for holding a button down for it... or the janky gunplay), I still think it holds up really well. Pacing is fantastic story-wise, especially! Altho it still does take a while to get into immersive sims since I would still usually prefer more straightforward games with engaging combat as the core pillar... but that's more of a preference thing.
I used to play Gears of War 1/2/3 on Gamebattles and it was literally my childhood/entire teen hood lol. Probably thousands of hours invested into it. I was so ready for Gears 4 but I lost all interest from there on out. Idk man, just something about it. It wasn’t the same Gears of War anymore. Same happened with Halo. These series’ both died after 3.
I was a big fan of the Gears of War games. Played 1 - Judgement. I went on an hiatus for a while cuz of adult life. I returned and picked up the latest game in the series; gears 5. And I am shocked by how everything is different. The writing is bad too. Only pro I can think of is the gore is still fine
I feel like games like this will never come back, but with videos like this makes me feel great, knowing I wasn’t the only one around the world that experienced such a game.
That trailer for gears 1 was amazing. The online, crab walking, Hosting Over power, MLG battles… man what a great time to be alive and a kid with no responsibility with all your buddies and shiiiite talking after a match. I’ll never forget how amazing these 3 games where. I still put beating General RAMM on insane on my resume, that’s a life achievement.
Gears 1 changed games for me. It was Gritty, violent, looked incredible, and had a brutal Multiplayer. 8 Rnds, execution. You die, you sit out the round. Gears 2 was even more epic. Horde mode for hours. Sadly, I think Gears 3 moved away from what made 1 and 2 great. It introduced TDM to compete with trends at the time, it introduced paid cosmetic skins, it was so bright and colourful. I still.played the hell out of it, but I missed the dark black blood and violence from the 1st 2 games.. I enjoyed Gears so much, I even have a tattoo of it. A simple COG.
Gears of War 4... Maybe it's me? The dialogue/writing was hollow. Felt like it was created, just for money? Gears of War 3 finished the story, basically. But nope, The Swarm had to be a thing. With nothing new offered. Bring back the horror element and fear/pressure in cover based crossfire.
Gears of war 1 is my all time favorite game and I adore the OG trilogy to death, making me a fan. Even if games like 5 & Judgment aren't as good, I still enjoy them.
I believe that Judgment had a lot of good ideas that were implemented unevenly in a way that made it hard for people to appreciate its genuinely good parts while its bad ideas stood out like sore thumbs. The story was excellent (even though it retconned things in the lore didn’t need retconning to produce an equally good story) and the way the challenge system played into it was actually a brilliant idea from a narrative standpoint. The problems there lie in how poorly many of the challenges are implemented and how its map design in the campaign made things unnecessarily punishing to players on the higher difficulties. As for its bad parts, the control scheme change and changes to the effectiveness of weapons like the Gnasher, I agree that these were mistakes that are jarring for people jumping from one game to the next. I believe that a PC port and modding tools would allow players to fix the worst mistakes in Judgment as such that the intended experience would be able to shine through.

When it comes to the original GOW games it's like you said, they're about brotherhood. Soldiers who start out as strangers who grow to die for each other. Something that E-Day has a lot potential for with showing how dom and Marcus learned to become brothers in arms. With Gears 4 and 5 the tone is completely off compared to the others. No one cares about JD and his dad issues with Marcus or kait discovering her identity of being related to the locust queen, or del just being... there, he doesn't really contribute anything to the plot aside from being the best friend. also the writing is just not right, it's trying way too hard to be like a buddy cop joss Whedon script. I wonder if they'll ever make a gears 6? I don't think many people would care if they abandoned it, it would be kinda funny actually.
From what i remember. There was a huge shift in third person shooters once RE4 came out. While it is true that Gears pioneered third person cover shooting, RE4 pioneered the over the shoulder precision aiming camera which at the time i saw many games adopting into their design. At the time the Games i noticed such as the first Uncharted, Dead Space, MGS4, GTAIV, and several others started using RE4's precision aiming mechanics, including gears itself.
Yes RE4 was one of the first 3rd person shooters, but Gears popularized the cover based shooter. Last of Us and Uncharted both borrowed this from Gears. Games like GTA 4 you can see didn't borrow Gears mechanics and were worse for it.
First of all, great video. You made lots of good points as to why Gears of War was so iconic and revolutionary, and I agree with all your points about the original trilogy. I've beaten the whole series on Insane myself too, and I think that all the themes of brotherhood are amplified when you play through the campaign in co-op with a friend. Now, its not just Dom, the video game character you're fighting alongside; it's your real life best friend and allegorical brother-in-arms controlling Dom. And from there, you can plan out joint tactics and gameplay strategies that might make some segments easier (if you're both skilled and coordinate well) but still leave you feeling like your skills were tested to their limits and you still came out on top. As for 4 and 5, I actually liked them more than the original trilogy. To me, they continued to improve the gameplay and mechanics beyond the improvements of Gears 3 while not overstepping themselves too far away from the core gameplay like Gears of War Judgment did (very underrated and goated game imo). I thought the new story and themes they wanted to explore with these new characters was very fitting to follow up with. You never even mentioned JD in your video; the literal son of Marcus who had a falling out with the military and joined that settlement with Kait. He's different from his father because he starts off more naive than Marcus at the beginning of Gears 1 (14 years after E-Day, btw; Marcus has seen some stuff already). JD hadn't experienced real war yet, but sure was about to, and you can see that impact on him as his character progresses throughout 4 and 5. First Minister Jinn was supposed to be unlikeable, and they did a good job with her character in that regard imo. The fact that she reprograms the Deebee drones to replace the military and send them after the independent settlements including JD's shows where her priorities are, given the Swarm outbreak. So yeah, she herself is very corrupt, and that seeps into the COG when she takes over. Even Marcus doesn't agree with the direction she takes the COG down. So now, JD, Kait, and Marcus are caught in this three-way-conflict where they have to face the COG and the Swarm from both sides, and that was fascinating to me because now it wasn't a simple, black-and-white good vs evil conflict anymore. There is no more "all good" side since each faction has their reasons to be non-altruistic. I never once considered Kait to be "woke" or "over-feminized"; she just felt like another brother-in-arms to me. Or I guess a sister-in-arms to be more accurate, but her gender didn't really make her stand out or feel radically different from everyone else for me. She was like that female friend who happens to be a girl, but still fits in perfectly with the boys. She too was seeing war and experiencing the grief that loss brings, as well as the despair of standing against a force that has nothing to lose while you have everything to lose; something you see Delta Squad go through in the original trilogy. And tying her in with the Locust origins by making her the granddaughter of Myrrha was mind blowing for me (and it lines up perfectly in the lore, given that Myrrha was just a normal human too, but self-proclaimed as the Locust Queen). So seeing her ties to the Locusts and the Swarm in 5 for me was fascinating too. Despite guessing her ties with Myrrha given the ending of 4, seeing everything explained and tied together in the Mt. Kadar labs in 5 still felt mind-blowing. Much more was going on than just Kait being Myrrha's granddaughter. I understand why Gears 4 and 5 isn't for you, and that's okay. That's something I will just have to respectfully disagree with. But one thing I think we can agree on is that Gear of War: E-Day is gonna be HYPE!!!!
Gears of War actually did not create cover-based shooter genre, only popularized it. The first shooter with cover-based mechanic is Winback series by Omega Force in 1999. But the cover-based mechanics that we knew today was first introduced by Namco USA's Kill Switch in 2003.
Yeah gears 4 and 5 has a lot of issues in the writing area, bringing back the locust was incredibly stupid. I don’t think there could be any other way to show their incompetence, it would have been cool if they would have teased us that “maybe” the locust has gone back. And then surprise us by revealing that this “new enemy” is a complete different species maybe having some sort of connection with the locust but the locust race is completely dead in the ground SIX FEET UNDER. But they instead they come out and say that everything that happened in the OG trilogy was for nothing
I always had the feeling that Gears 5 was well received by the community after the fourth game had a rough time. It was clear for me from the start that the franchise needed kind of a new direction after the first trilogy and the very mediocre Judgment. I actually enjoyed the fifth game, especially the Next-Gen-Version looking and playing great. Gears of War is at least facing similar problems God of War on the PlayStation had. Both franchises don't shine with a wide range of Gameplay features and a rich, deep story. God of War is now going a complete different direction while The Coalition tries to stick when it comes to the roots of the series while trying new things. They are at least doing a better job in my opintion compared to 343 Industries with Halo which is currently a train wreck, Gears is miles away from this derailed train.
14:23 i disagree. what makes the game good is that you do feel the burden of orders when they come from command. whenever you have to take a long route, redo a faulty mission, go back down a dark and eerie path in a storm with krill,, etc, your thought process is the same as a soldier who has to suck it up and get it done, while the commanding officers and anya sit behind their desks.
I remember liking the first two JD missions of Gears 5, it felt like Old School Gears, the one where they stop a nuke and when they're being attacked in the city, after that it's like the game took a 180 turn
She-Hulk wasn't a movie that bombed. It was a streaming series that did very well because a lot of people were hate-watching it. She's a great, classic character.
I’m pushing back against one comparison. You said Last of us copied gears but imo Last of us/uncharted revolutionized cover shooters by taking away snapping to cover and just integrating character animation and cover. Which most games do now instead of what gears did. It’s outdated now how gears cover shooting works.
gears 1 and 3 to this day are my favorite multi-player experiences its crazy that a 3rd person shooter could have a mechanism that seems so minor aka wall bouncing and canceling leading to perhaps the most high skill ceiling and intensive movement mechanic I've ever seen, and I have thousands of hours in cs surf and tf2 rocket and sticky jumper maps. there's just nothing else quite like being a good gears player on a movement tech level 👌 go back and check out some of those old essence montages and thank me later 👍
Back when these games came out, they also had very fun online PvP modes similar to cod/halo like team deathmatch, executioner, king of the hill, which were a lot of fun and very competitive. Gears 2 and 3 also introduced horde mode and beast mode which are a ton of fun as well. This added a lot of replay-ability beyond the story modes. It was honestly such a great series, and it's too bad they couldn't make more games like the first three to keep the franchise alive.
I’ll tell you the exact reason Gears of War failed: Greed. As someone who’s put literally thousands of hours into Gears of War and was top 10 in the world for Gears 1 I truly have seen the decline of Gears of war from within. The decline started in Gears of War 3 when attempting to appeal to the masses and gain even more money they sold out and reverted to copying other games for their success. They implemented game modes like team deathmatch, made the gameplay more noob friendly with weapons like the sawed off shotgun and tried everything to get more newbies to play their game. The downfall grew from there until we seen Gears 5 with their Terminator skins and FOMO cash shop. The first 2 games had an exciting and immersive campaign but yet again it was three that ran out of ideas and instead said “ohhh shiny explosive locusts” In truth It went for graphics over gameplay, copying others instead of innovating and sold its soul, and no matter how hard they try, it will never be successful ever again.
Weren't the Lambents in Gears 1 and 2 as well (at least the Lambent Wretches and Drones)? Sure, Gears 3 did introduce new Lambent variants, but I never saw that as a sign of them running out of ideas.
bro i remember when Dom died my best friend and me didnt touch the game for 2 weeks because we were heart broken. we played the gears series and when we saw Dom die we couldn't keep going it took us a while for us to recover and give the game a chance.
Gears of war was so damn impressive in terms of visuals back when it released. The cover based gameplay was a breath of fresh air and fun to play with friends. Enemies were interesting and fun to fight. I was invested early on and it kept me hooked all the way through gears of war 3. Gears of war 2 was my favorite among the trilogy but really enjoyed all of them.

Gears of War E Day got me hyped because it looks to return to the roots of the brothers til the end genre. Even reading what they are planning to do with the game it seems to return to the roots of what makes Gears of War great. War torn society, horror theme, mystery, brothers in arms, hopelessness, and a dark grayish filter but expanding upon it.
The main problem with the newer gears is that they forget what makes gears gears. Their to focused on getting more people to play gears then just making a gears game. Just look how to changed the name it went from Gears of WAR to Gears. Each new Gears game is dumbing down the gore and violence. Just look at the Gears 5 gameplay the blood looks like jellO. Going back to OG gears 1 and 2 that shit was violent. I remember taking the time to look at a locust corpse after I chain sawed them. Seeing guts and bone coming out and thinking Nice. Remember how in Gears 1 Carmine got shot in the face and you saw a big hole in his head then his lifeless body hits the ground? In Gears 5 I cant even think of a scene being that dark or violent. Now you think okay the violence is toned down that means the story should be good right? No its not. Gears 4 was alright but, not as good. I take as a decent first Gears game made by the new studio. Then Gears 5 stop focusing on JD then mind you previous game made him the main character and the prime focus for the trailers. To focus on Kate. Yes Kate the one that no one really cared for some did do to the mystery at the end of 4 and her mom dying. Not only that they try to make every single way to make JD look like a dick. Not only that but, Gears 5 multiplayer sucked due to them focusing on microtransactions . Horde mode was a shadow of its former self the only cool mode might have been Hive . I barely remember the multiplayer in Gears 4 and 5 thats how dull it was. Not to mention if you wanted to character skin you have to get lucky and spend a good bit of money to get it. Older gears game you unlock by challenges or just got it from the store. Which is kinda crappy but, atleast I did have to spend 50+ to unlock UIR skin. The only point I disagree with the video is the part about women. Im not a sjw just wanted to say its fine to have females in gears but, dont make like Kate. There are plenty of females in the gears books that are just as badass as finx and it doenst pull the Mary Sue shit like Kate. Oh just thought about it the part of "Following orders" its not really a gears theme because in the books marcus didnt follow orders and got a whole city killed due to his actions. Watching this after the trailer released yesterday, Gears 1 is what brought me to Xbox. I got it for Christmas and my brother and I played it together on split screen. It’s still my favourite gaming memory to this day, it’s my favourite franchise of all time. Seeing Dom save Marcus in the trailer yesterday brought tears to my eyes. All those memories with my brother back and nothing will ever take those away. This franchise is more than a game to me, I’m so happy they’re going back to their roots with E-Day
Literally just downloaded the original gears 1 to play campaign and decided to see if I can get into a multiplayer. I was suprised how fast I got into full lobbies and hit up my friends I used to play with and they all re downloaded it and we all played today for hours. Nostalgia gents. Used to grind this game and haven’t played since 2016. Remember no active downs and lancers or you’re a trash !
Theory: why the AI got worse? In older games if the visual fidelity couldn’t be push further other areas were explored. Now marketing focuses on graphics and the development focus shifted to make beautiful games as this is how they can be sold. This is why AI does not get enough attention. It is a very complex process to make AI fun to play with. I recommend GDC panel on Doom 2016 AI (dumb it down to make it fun).
Loved 1-3 even changing up the locusts to gladiator designs later on it felt the same & yet fresh, a lot of your points I've had in my head to, you just put them into words..... Great video wish we could go back to 3 no loot boxes battle passes just up close & personal fun
I always felt with the original trilogy big story threads were there, but no full answers were given to you. You could read comics and novels and they were often tease things close to answers, but always left you wondering and trying to create your own ideas as to what are the locust? Was was the use of the sires? Who was Queen Myyrah? 4 and 5 came along and just BAM! Here's an answer for everything just sort of destroying the fun mysteries of the series. I remember trying to replay through Gears 4's story and just getting so bored with the same copy/paste cutscenes of shooting a robot with the Jinn's face on I gave up. Really hope this new game takes it back to it's roots.

I think 5 could have been really cool if they focused on JD and him dealing with the repercussions of his actions in the prelude instead of pushing focus to Kate. A lawful good protagonist that has to deal with his decision killing 10s if not hundreds of his allies. Seems like a good psychological game. Never finished 5 but plan on going through all of them again before E-Day drops.
Going to be controversial to say, but it was at its best when it was just the dude bro shooter. They added some emotion to add more depth to the story and characters in 2 onward but it was still just gritty gore and testosterone. Then, the whole tone and shooter changed. The devs moved around and changed. Cliffy B changed. Then, the whole franchise changed for the worst trying to appeal to everyone and forgetting the core attraction to the series. There was nothing wrong with just being that hardcore dude bro shooter, but like Halo 4, Gears 4 onward tried chasing trends and culture zeitgeists and lost its charm.
Gears 3 sucked too, trivialized a lot of boss enemies and changed the shooting to more cod like with half the ammo and two held weapons that had to constantly be swapped vs planning and conserving ammo like 1 and 2

I couldn't have said it better myself, Gears was my game for over 10 years...jumping into each new installment and having literal months worth of play time in each... that all stopped when Gears 5 came out. After playing for so long and absolutely hating 5 I decided to give the franchise a break...haven't been back on for over 2 years... but man am I happy for E-day, hopefully it does not disappoint
This was a really great watch! I'm in agreement pretty much all the way, and having played the hell out of the first three games in the Gears franchise back as the released it still only just now fully registered with me just how much Gears of War really did change up the entire gaming industry. After that first one came out it became the game design template for other devs making third-person shooters to work off of. It would have been easy for those guys to coast through a lax dev cycle for the 2 sequels but they still kept at it with the refinements and improving the narrative writing chops each time. Like that scene where Dom reunites with his wife, with the camera panning around them to first show how Dom was seeing her as he remembered so the gut punch hits hard when reality subtly creeps in to reveal the utterly broken state of her. The why they executed that allowed us to experience that loss with Dom in each moment as hope turned to dread and reached it's climax that was the horror in the tragedy. The scene plays out pretty fast but damn did it leave an impression! Great vid once again! I've been subbed for a little while now but only finally got around to leaving a comment, so let me say you're content is consistently on point and you have my appreciation my good man!
Spot on. Absolutely spot on sir. I try to explain the whole gears being manly thing to people and I always get accused of being sexist or discriminating. It's not that, it's just exactly what you said. It was a game about manly men, made for guys who aspired and connected to being manly men.
And beating the original gears trilogy with my girlfriend through split screen, so insane is a memory i'll never forget. Also I do not know why AI seems so much weaker than it did in the early 2000s. I will reference one game that came out before gears of war, Rainbow 6 Vegas one and two. Very fun cover-based games. Looking back one of my biggest issues was having to hold down the button to stay in cover.
One thing I do wanna say: I don't have an issue with a female lead as some of the comments here imply. Gears lore is so deep I wouldn't mind the focus not be on Marcus and Co. for a bit, same as Halo with MC (Reach and ODST was great without him) Kait's biggest issue (and new Delta squad) is she's just doesn't really have a personality that sticks out. If she had, say Baird or Cole or even Sam's attitude, I would care a lot more when things went wrong for her. Give her Fahz's personality! I cared more about him than Kait seeing her mother. She also was a brat at times in 5. What she needs is her own "Cole train on the mic in gears 2" scene and I would love her a lot more Also even though I never played Gears 4-5 on insane, I will say Gears 1 is pretty easy on insane. It only got hard to me during the Raam fight (pause)

I will say the one thing the new studio did right was the movement. Multiplayer feels the best it ever has and no more host advantage is a MASSIVE improvement, though I think they cleared that issue up in 3 But they changed and removed good weapons just like EVERY other studio that takes over for the original crew. They ALWAYS subtract and never add anything to the games Taking out the Hammer was by far the most stupid decision they have made. They removed the Digger launcher, changed the iconic Boltok sound for literally no reason whatsoever and so on. Even with all this I will say that it wasn't complete garbage like most other studios that take over. 343 for example. I find it funny that the singular thing these people do right is polish the multiplayer to an amazing extent in terms of movement and just how smooth everything feels... and that's where it ends because they take out fun and creative guns, ruin the ones we have and make them all sound like popcorn machines. Weak and impotent. Gears 4 and 5 are no where near as horrible as they could of been. On the other hand. How could we expect the original magic when we dont have the original people? Gotta be realistic about it I will agree with what was said here in the sense that they just pulled more of the woke agenda bullshit of just throwing an angry Woman on screen and calling it a day. So help Me if I see a disgruntled trans character be the star of the show in 6 🤣 On a more serious note they really could of made her an amazing female character. A true, strong Woman. Gears of war will forever hold a special place in my heart. the music, the dialogue, the story, the gameplay, gears 1-3 is just perfect. i sometimes go back and replay gears 1 and 3 and it never gets old. the comradery is some of the best ive ever seen in any game. its so damn realistic especially if youve served . my mom took me to a toys r us when i was like 10-14 years old and let me pick an M rated game. it was either Afro Samurai or Gears of War 1. i chose gears. we get home, turn the xbox and start playing. that ominous title screen will never leave my mind. my hears all the cussing and sees all the blood and knew she messed up buying me this game😂 the Berserker haunted me for years till ingot older and just laughed at it. i even know lines from the game like the back of my hand
Gears of War is the game that made me get a Xbox 360. I had so much fun playing Gears, and made so many friends, Especially GOW 2, it's crazy. Marcus: Dom, what the FUCK are you doing? Dom: I'm pulling the plug on them, Marcus!…Jump, will you? DO IT!
the difficulty of gears of war was actually one of the flaws, in my opinion. it was too frustrating that dom didn't help at all, and was running around doing nothing while you were down. i hated looking around and seeing dom a football field behind me, or running the opposite direction.
I got my Gears tattoo back in 2010 when i was 18 (my first and only tattoo) because of how much i loved the game. Absolutely no regrets looking at it today at 32 but sometimes i ask "what have they done to you?" For me it ended with Gears 3.
I could barely complete part 4 and haven't gone past 20% in gears 5. The multiplayer on the other hand I had 200 hours before it went dead. They feel like different games from the Epic games ones. Like they are not cannon, just boring.
Your comment about enemy Ai somehow being so much worse NOW compared to older games.. Is 100% fact! I don't understand how games that released early 360 days have not just enemy Ai miles above what we see today but they also did many other core things that make good games great. I won't list them all here but Gaming desperately needs to Reconnect to these core aspects of games that the 360 era and the PS3/PS2 era did So well as a whole.. I left xbox after gears 3. Ironically enough judgment was it's downfall. It was the greatest multi-player experience I've ever had. It a shame how far it's fallen.
Playing Gears of War Ultimate Edition on my first Xbox Console. Gameplay is so much fun, challenging and amazing and satisfying. Still far better than most recent AAA third person shooter. So excited to play its all sequels.
RE4 brought in in the over the shoulder perspective but not the cover. Since Uncharted came out less than a year later, I’d be curious to know what if anything changed in its development once gears came out or was even shown off. There definitely had to have been overlap in their development timelines.
Gears of Woke 6 was a self telling story that needed no release. If they wanted a female character, should have kept Anya alive. Its new to us but nothing beats sticking it to the broken; like rolling a red-stained carpet over a flaccid rainbow.

I played Gears 3 probably x10. Featuring women was cool . But making it about women and being the main character reaks of that modern audience Bullshit. On top of other problems the newer ganes had
as a woman who's been playing all the gears games since 2010, i completely agree that 4 and 5 absolutely suck. i appreciate a very well written story that has characters you can connect with in one way or another (which i did with the og games and no they weren't Anya or Sam or Bernadette). E-Day has me hyped for going back to the Locust War and i'm so excited to see both Dom and Marcus again fighting at each others side. The story is just too good to water it down in the way they've been doing it.

I remember when I hosted a Gears of War 3 tournament at home. Three friends had brought over their consoles and 36in flat screens. With fully loaded horde and multiplayer games, adding in pop and pizza, it was the best time.

Gears ended with the third one, for me. Once Cliffy left, it became average. Even the graphics became cartoonish. I recall the gaming media mocking the colour pallette, labelling it brown. But that realistic, gritty tone, was Gears. When they started adding robots & the focus was taken away from Marcus, the magic was lost.
I don't want Gears 6. I want a complete reboot, with Cliff back in charge. Great video, I completely agree with all your points. Gears was the personification of masculinity, done in a fun way.

Gears 1 2 3 were a heartfelt trilogy following a warhero's perspective as he struggles with ptsd and war grinding up everything and everyone around him. Gears 4 was a melodramatic shooter about the war hero's entitled son and gears 5 is a full on tela novella spin off about the chosen one 9000 who was the entitled son's obvious love intrest in the previous game. The direction of the story isnt even the problem I like a little saucy drama but the writing is so fucking bad they make her LITERALLY say to the war hero's entitled son (who was the main protagg in the last game)"Screw your orders, It isn't about you, It is about me" to this man with 0 fucking nuance as the game starts in earnest.

Here's some constructive criticism from me - I just played the first game and then played the fourth one. The fourth game fails to deliver everything that made the first three games great, apart from John DiMaggio's wonderful performance as Marcus Fenix.
This game has no level design, writing for toddlers, ruined gameplay mechanics, braindead AI and do you wanna know how I got to finish Gears 4? 20 minutes of playing interrupted by 20-30 minutes of going to UA-cam to watch a full cinematic of Gears 2. That was the only thing that kept me from uninstalling it immediately after the rock, paper, scissors cutscenes and the 50 "DONT POP THE PODS" lines. The game literally punishes you for playing it and every time I loaded it up I had to every single time close an ad for Gears 5. This shit isn't worth its full price. If it wasn't 5 bucks on Microsoft Store I wouldn't have bothered at all and if Marcus Fenix wasn't in it, I wouldn't have bought it at all. And it kinda feels like the devs knew that and that's the only reason they left him in the game... If Gears 2 and 3 were available on PC, I would've never bought 4. I'm certainly not gonna play 5.

With companies like Sweet Baby Inc basically having a death grip over the throats of Microsoft and other companies, we might never get a good gears game again.

Considering the events of the last week, I'd say it's the other way around, where Microsoft has a death grip on the studios under its umbrella. Including The Coalition, Gears of War's current development team. Whether or not Sweet Baby Inc has any real power over a game's success, is inconsequential --- Microsoft doesn't guarantee job security, either way. And I imagine morale has plummeted quite drastically, as a result. There _is,_ however, a possibility The Coalition has immunity, being a steward of one of Microsoft's flagship franchise, just like 343i, but there's no assurance of this.

I genuinely miss short, linear, singleplayer campaigns (8-15 hours max on normal difficulty) that are also highly replayable. The problem with modern AAA games is you either get an open world or some kind of RPG with hundreds of hours of padding... or, on the other side of the scale, excessively cinematic, linear campaigns that have only 30-50% of it being actual gameplay. And I hate when the latter is often considered as the same thing as the older, more gameplay-focused games. I love Max Payne 3, but it's certainly an example of just how much things changed across the years from the way games were handled way back in terms of the ratio between story and core gameplay.
Yeah, I was going to play Dishonored 2 but I realized I had a lot of acheievments to get in the first game. I went through the whole game and dlc with energy to play it more as I messed up my ghost run. The game takes less than 10 hours to beat at a casual rate and has lots of replayablity. I tried to play Deus Ex HR but I think its a little too dated or something. I'd like to try the sequel which Ive seen on sale for 5$. These "immersive sim" games they call them are superb imo. They respect your time and have excellent gameplay.
@@iBishopEsquire, I'm almost done with Human Revolution, and, while I agree that certain gameplay mechanics are dated (as some quick examples, tap to aim with no options for holding a button down for it... or the janky gunplay), I still think it holds up really well. Pacing is fantastic story-wise, especially! Altho it still does take a while to get into immersive sims since I would still usually prefer more straightforward games with engaging combat as the core pillar... but that's more of a preference thing.
I used to play Gears of War 1/2/3 on Gamebattles and it was literally my childhood/entire teen hood lol. Probably thousands of hours invested into it. I was so ready for Gears 4 but I lost all interest from there on out. Idk man, just something about it. It wasn’t the same Gears of War anymore. Same happened with Halo. These series’ both died after 3.
I was a big fan of the Gears of War games. Played 1 - Judgement. I went on an hiatus for a while cuz of adult life. I returned and picked up the latest game in the series; gears 5. And I am shocked by how everything is different. The writing is bad too. Only pro I can think of is the gore is still fine

That trailer for gears 1 was amazing. The online, crab walking, Hosting Over power, MLG battles… man what a great time to be alive and a kid with no responsibility with all your buddies and shiiiite talking after a match. I’ll never forget how amazing these 3 games where. I still put beating General RAMM on insane on my resume, that’s a life achievement.

Sadly, I think Gears 3 moved away from what made 1 and 2 great. It introduced TDM to compete with trends at the time, it introduced paid cosmetic skins, it was so bright and colourful. I still.played the hell out of it, but I missed the dark black blood and violence from the 1st 2 games..

Gears of War 4... Maybe it's me? The dialogue/writing was hollow. Felt like it was created, just for money? Gears of War 3 finished the story, basically. But nope, The Swarm had to be a thing. With nothing new offered. Bring back the horror element and fear/pressure in cover based crossfire.
Still remember the chills from hearing that audiable “BOOM” the first time. Love Gears 1-3!!!
Gears of war 1 is my all time favorite game and I adore the OG trilogy to death, making me a fan. Even if games like 5 & Judgment aren't as good, I still enjoy them.
I believe that Judgment had a lot of good ideas that were implemented unevenly in a way that made it hard for people to appreciate its genuinely good parts while its bad ideas stood out like sore thumbs. The story was excellent (even though it retconned things in the lore didn’t need retconning to produce an equally good story) and the way the challenge system played into it was actually a brilliant idea from a narrative standpoint. The problems there lie in how poorly many of the challenges are implemented and how its map design in the campaign made things unnecessarily punishing to players on the higher difficulties. As for its bad parts, the control scheme change and changes to the effectiveness of weapons like the Gnasher, I agree that these were mistakes that are jarring for people jumping from one game to the next.
I believe that a PC port and modding tools would allow players to fix the worst mistakes in Judgment as such that the intended experience would be able to shine through.

When it comes to the original GOW games it's like you said, they're about brotherhood. Soldiers who start out as strangers who grow to die for each other. Something that E-Day has a lot potential for with showing how dom and Marcus learned to become brothers in arms. With Gears 4 and 5 the tone is completely off compared to the others. No one cares about JD and his dad issues with Marcus or kait discovering her identity of being related to the locust queen, or del just being... there, he doesn't really contribute anything to the plot aside from being the best friend. also the writing is just not right, it's trying way too hard to be like a buddy cop joss Whedon script. I wonder if they'll ever make a gears 6? I don't think many people would care if they abandoned it, it would be kinda funny actually.
From what i remember. There was a huge shift in third person shooters once RE4 came out. While it is true that Gears pioneered third person cover shooting, RE4 pioneered the over the shoulder precision aiming camera which at the time i saw many games adopting into their design. At the time the Games i noticed such as the first Uncharted, Dead Space, MGS4, GTAIV, and several others started using RE4's precision aiming mechanics, including gears itself.
Yes RE4 was one of the first 3rd person shooters, but Gears popularized the cover based shooter. Last of Us and Uncharted both borrowed this from Gears. Games like GTA 4 you can see didn't borrow Gears mechanics and were worse for it.
There was loads of cover based shooters on PC well before gears, I guess it lead to more console clones but it was far from the first to do it well

First of all, great video. You made lots of good points as to why Gears of War was so iconic and revolutionary, and I agree with all your points about the original trilogy. I've beaten the whole series on Insane myself too, and I think that all the themes of brotherhood are amplified when you play through the campaign in co-op with a friend. Now, its not just Dom, the video game character you're fighting alongside; it's your real life best friend and allegorical brother-in-arms controlling Dom. And from there, you can plan out joint tactics and gameplay strategies that might make some segments easier (if you're both skilled and coordinate well) but still leave you feeling like your skills were tested to their limits and you still came out on top.
As for 4 and 5, I actually liked them more than the original trilogy. To me, they continued to improve the gameplay and mechanics beyond the improvements of Gears 3 while not overstepping themselves too far away from the core gameplay like Gears of War Judgment did (very underrated and goated game imo). I thought the new story and themes they wanted to explore with these new characters was very fitting to follow up with. You never even mentioned JD in your video; the literal son of Marcus who had a falling out with the military and joined that settlement with Kait. He's different from his father because he starts off more naive than Marcus at the beginning of Gears 1 (14 years after E-Day, btw; Marcus has seen some stuff already). JD hadn't experienced real war yet, but sure was about to, and you can see that impact on him as his character progresses throughout 4 and 5. First Minister Jinn was supposed to be unlikeable, and they did a good job with her character in that regard imo. The fact that she reprograms the Deebee drones to replace the military and send them after the independent settlements including JD's shows where her priorities are, given the Swarm outbreak. So yeah, she herself is very corrupt, and that seeps into the COG when she takes over. Even Marcus doesn't agree with the direction she takes the COG down. So now, JD, Kait, and Marcus are caught in this three-way-conflict where they have to face the COG and the Swarm from both sides, and that was fascinating to me because now it wasn't a simple, black-and-white good vs evil conflict anymore. There is no more "all good" side since each faction has their reasons to be non-altruistic. I never once considered Kait to be "woke" or "over-feminized"; she just felt like another brother-in-arms to me. Or I guess a sister-in-arms to be more accurate, but her gender didn't really make her stand out or feel radically different from everyone else for me. She was like that female friend who happens to be a girl, but still fits in perfectly with the boys. She too was seeing war and experiencing the grief that loss brings, as well as the despair of standing against a force that has nothing to lose while you have everything to lose; something you see Delta Squad go through in the original trilogy. And tying her in with the Locust origins by making her the granddaughter of Myrrha was mind blowing for me (and it lines up perfectly in the lore, given that Myrrha was just a normal human too, but self-proclaimed as the Locust Queen). So seeing her ties to the Locusts and the Swarm in 5 for me was fascinating too. Despite guessing her ties with Myrrha given the ending of 4, seeing everything explained and tied together in the Mt. Kadar labs in 5 still felt mind-blowing. Much more was going on than just Kait being Myrrha's granddaughter.
I understand why Gears 4 and 5 isn't for you, and that's okay. That's something I will just have to respectfully disagree with. But one thing I think we can agree on is that Gear of War: E-Day is gonna be HYPE!!!!

Yeah gears 4 and 5 has a lot of issues in the writing area, bringing back the locust was incredibly stupid. I don’t think there could be any other way to show their incompetence, it would have been cool if they would have teased us that “maybe” the locust has gone back. And then surprise us by revealing that this “new enemy” is a complete different species maybe having some sort of connection with the locust but the locust race is completely dead in the ground SIX FEET UNDER. But they instead they come out and say that everything that happened in the OG trilogy was for nothing

I always had the feeling that Gears 5 was well received by the community after the fourth game had a rough time. It was clear for me from the start that the franchise needed kind of a new direction after the first trilogy and the very mediocre Judgment. I actually enjoyed the fifth game, especially the Next-Gen-Version looking and playing great. Gears of War is at least facing similar problems God of War on the PlayStation had. Both franchises don't shine with a wide range of Gameplay features and a rich, deep story. God of War is now going a complete different direction while The Coalition tries to stick when it comes to the roots of the series while trying new things. They are at least doing a better job in my opintion compared to 343 Industries with Halo which is currently a train wreck, Gears is miles away from this derailed train.

You said Last of us copied gears but imo Last of us/uncharted revolutionized cover shooters by taking away snapping to cover and just integrating character animation and cover. gears 1 and 3 to this day are my favorite multi-player experiences its crazy that a 3rd person shooter could have a mechanism that seems so minor aka wall bouncing and canceling leading to perhaps the most high skill ceiling and intensive movement mechanic I've ever seen, and I have thousands of hours in cs surf and tf2 rocket and sticky jumper maps. there's just nothing else quite like being a good gears player on a movement tech level 👌 go back and check out some of those old essence montages and thank me later 👍
Back when these games came out, they also had very fun online PvP modes similar to cod/halo like team deathmatch, executioner, king of the hill, which were a lot of fun and very competitive. Gears 2 and 3 also introduced horde mode and beast mode which are a ton of fun as well. This added a lot of replay-ability beyond the story modes. It was honestly such a great series, and it's too bad they couldn't make more games like the first three to keep the franchise alive.

As someone who’s put literally thousands of hours into Gears of War and was top 10 in the world for Gears 1 I truly have seen the decline of Gears of war from within. The decline started in Gears of War 3 when attempting to appeal to the masses and gain even more money they sold out and reverted to copying other games for their success. They implemented game modes like team deathmatch, made the gameplay more noob friendly with weapons like the sawed off shotgun and tried everything to get more newbies to play their game. The downfall grew from there until we seen Gears 5 with their Terminator skins and FOMO cash shop. The first 2 games had an exciting and immersive campaign but yet again it was three that ran out of ideas and instead said “ohhh shiny explosive locusts”
In truth It went for graphics over gameplay, copying others instead of innovating and sold its soul, and no matter how hard they try, it will never be successful ever again.
Weren't the Lambents in Gears 1 and 2 as well (at least the Lambent Wretches and Drones)? Sure, Gears 3 did introduce new Lambent variants, but I never saw that as a sign of them running out of ideas.

Gears of war was so damn impressive in terms of visuals back when it released. The cover based gameplay was a breath of fresh air and fun to play with friends. Enemies were interesting and fun to fight. I was invested early on and it kept me hooked all the way through gears of war 3. Gears of war 2 was my favorite among the trilogy but really enjoyed all of them.

Gears of War E Day got me hyped because it looks to return to the roots of the brothers til the end genre. Even reading what they are planning to do with the game it seems to return to the roots of what makes Gears of War great. War torn society, horror theme, mystery, brothers in arms, hopelessness, and a dark grayish filter but expanding upon it.
The main problem with the newer gears is that they forget what makes gears gears. Their to focused on getting more people to play gears then just making a gears game. Just look how to changed the name it went from Gears of WAR to Gears. Each new Gears game is dumbing down the gore and violence. Just look at the Gears 5 gameplay the blood looks like jellO. Going back to OG gears 1 and 2 that shit was violent. I remember taking the time to look at a locust corpse after I chain sawed them. Seeing guts and bone coming out and thinking Nice. Remember how in Gears 1 Carmine got shot in the face and you saw a big hole in his head then his lifeless body hits the ground? In Gears 5 I cant even think of a scene being that dark or violent.

Not only that but, Gears 5 multiplayer sucked due to them focusing on microtransactions . Horde mode was a shadow of its former self the only cool mode might have been Hive . Older gears game you unlock by challenges or just got it from the store. Which is kinda crappy but, atleast I did have to spend 50+ to unlock UIR skin.

Watching this after the trailer released yesterday, Gears 1 is what brought me to Xbox. I got it for Christmas and my brother and I played it together on split screen. It’s still my favourite gaming memory to this day, it’s my favourite franchise of all time. Seeing Dom save Marcus in the trailer yesterday brought tears to my eyes. All those memories with my brother back and nothing will ever take those away. This franchise is more than a game to me, I’m so happy they’re going back to their roots with E-Day

I was suprised how fast I got into full lobbies and hit up my friends I used to play with and they all re downloaded it and we all played today for hours. Nostalgia gents. Theory: why the AI got worse? In older games if the visual fidelity couldn’t be push further other areas were explored. Now marketing focuses on graphics and the development focus shifted to make beautiful games as this is how they can be sold. This is why AI does not get enough attention. It is a very complex process to make AI fun to play with. I recommend GDC panel on Doom 2016 AI (dumb it down to make it fun).

I always felt with the original trilogy big story threads were there, but no full answers were given to you. You could read comics and novels and they were often tease things close to answers, but always left you wondering and trying to create your own ideas as to what are the locust? Was was the use of the sires? Who was Queen Myyrah? 4 and 5 came along and just BAM! Here's an answer for everything just sort of destroying the fun mysteries of the series. I remember trying to replay through Gears 4's story and just getting so bored with the same copy/paste cutscenes of shooting a robot with the Jinn's face on I gave up. Really hope this new game takes it back to it's roots.

A lawful good protagonist that has to deal with his decision killing 10s if not hundreds of his allies. Seems like a good psychological game. Never finished 5 but plan on going through all of them again before E-Day drops.

Going to be controversial to say, but it was at its best when it was just the dude bro shooter. They added some emotion to add more depth to the story and characters in 2 onward but it was still just gritty gore and testosterone. Then, the whole tone and shooter changed. The devs moved around and changed. Cliffy B changed. Then, the whole franchise changed for the worst trying to appeal to everyone and forgetting the core attraction to the series. There was nothing wrong with just being that hardcore dude bro shooter, but like Halo 4, Gears 4 onward tried chasing trends and culture zeitgeists and lost its charm.

I couldn't have said it better myself, Gears was my game for over 10 years...jumping into each new installment and having literal months worth of play time in each... that all stopped when Gears 5 came out. After playing for so long and absolutely hating 5 I decided to give the franchise a break...haven't been back on for over 2 years... but man am I happy for E-day, hopefully it does not disappoint

This was a really great watch! I'm in agreement pretty much all the way, and having played the hell out of the first three games in the Gears franchise back as the released it still only just now fully registered with me just how much Gears of War really did change up the entire gaming industry. After that first one came out it became the game design template for other devs making third-person shooters to work off of. It would have been easy for those guys to coast through a lax dev cycle for the 2 sequels but they still kept at it with the refinements and improving the narrative writing chops each time. Like that scene where Dom reunites with his wife, with the camera panning around them to first show how Dom was seeing her as he remembered so the gut punch hits hard when reality subtly creeps in to reveal the utterly broken state of her. The why they executed that allowed us to experience that loss with Dom in each moment as hope turned to dread and reached it's climax that was the horror in the tragedy. The scene plays out pretty fast but damn did it leave an impression! Great vid once again! I've been subbed for a little while now but only finally got around to leaving a comment, so let me say you're content is consistently on point and you have my appreciation my good man!

Also I do not know why AI seems so much weaker than it did in the early 2000s. I will reference one game that came out before gears of war, Rainbow 6 Vegas one and two. Very fun cover-based games. Looking back one of my biggest issues was having to hold down the button to stay in cover.
Also the game "F.E.A.R." that came out in 2005 has better AI than any modern game I've played.

Kait's biggest issue (and new Delta squad) is she's just doesn't really have a personality that sticks out. If she had, say Baird or Cole or even Sam's attitude, I would care a lot more when things went wrong for her. Give her Fahz's personality! I cared more about him than Kait seeing her mother. She also was a brat at times in 5.

Taking out the Hammer was by far the most stupid decision they have made. They removed the Digger launcher, changed the iconic Boltok sound for literally no reason whatsoever and so on.
Even with all this I will say that it wasn't complete garbage like most other studios that take over. 343 for example. I find it funny that the singular thing these people do right is polish the multiplayer to an amazing extent in terms of movement and just how smooth everything feels... and that's where it ends because they take out fun and creative guns, ruin the ones we have and make them all sound like popcorn machines. Weak and impotent.

Gears of war will forever hold a special place in my heart. the music, the dialogue, the story, the gameplay, gears 1-3 is just perfect. i sometimes go back and replay gears 1 and 3 and it never gets old. the comradery is some of the best ive ever seen in any game. its so damn realistic especially if youve served .
my mom took me to a toys r us when i was like 10-14 years old and let me pick an M rated game. it was either Afro Samurai or Gears of War 1. i chose gears. we get home, turn the xbox and start playing. that ominous title screen will never leave my mind. my hears all the cussing and sees all the blood and knew she messed up buying me this game😂 the Berserker haunted me for years till ingot older and just laughed at it. i even know lines from the game like the back of my hand

the difficulty of gears of war was actually one of the flaws, in my opinion. it was too frustrating that dom didn't help at all, and was running around doing nothing while you were down. i hated looking around and seeing dom a football field behind me, or running the opposite direction.

I got my Gears tattoo back in 2010 when i was 18 (my first and only tattoo) because of how much i loved the game. Absolutely no regrets looking at it today at 32 but sometimes i ask "what have they done to you?" For me it ended with Gears 3.
I could barely complete part 4 and haven't gone past 20% in gears 5. The multiplayer on the other hand I had 200 hours before it went dead. They feel like different games from the Epic games ones. Like they are not cannon, just boring.
Your comment about enemy Ai somehow being so much worse NOW compared to older games.. Is 100% fact! I don't understand how games that released early 360 days have not just enemy Ai miles above what we see today but they also did many other core things that make good games great. I won't list them all here but Gaming desperately needs to Reconnect to these core aspects of games that the 360 era and the PS3/PS2 era did So well as a whole.. Idk know how gaming got so derailed and I wish it never did..

I left xbox after gears 3. Ironically enough judgment was it's downfall.
It was the greatest multi-player experience I've ever had. It a shame how far it's fallen.

Playing Gears of War Ultimate Edition on my first Xbox Console. Gameplay is so much fun, challenging and amazing and satisfying. Still far better than most recent AAA third person shooter. So excited to play its all sequels.
