@@CasonovaCorkClub Although metal has changed a great deal over the years and many now consider thrash level as metal only, I can assure you, when heavy metal was formed, Dio was a MAJOR contributor and during the creation of metal Dio was not........... the last in line. ;)
Ronnie James Dio was without a doubt, a metal vocalist. All that could possibly be debated would be the greatest of all time or not and that's subjective.
You would be correct however, had Dio remained in his first band ELF. There,he was a rock n roll singer. Once he went to Rainbow (then latter sabbath and his solo career of course), the world got metal Dio. Metal of the gods! :D
Be very careful of the circles in which you discredit Dio from being metal. The punishment in some groups I hear is DEATH! hahahaha.

That crowd was only about 700 people. In the previous show in Austria a security guy got a little too hands on with a fan and Ritchie kicked him in the jaw. After the show he was arrested & didn’t get out until pretty late on the gig night. The show was booked for TV broadcast so they went on after 11pm maybe midnight and played to the people that had stayed. A a couple of times during the show Ronnie thanks the crowd for staying so long. When introducing Long Live Rock n Roll Ronnie says “a message we’re give to the world except for Austria” referencing the previous show. The Austria bootleg is called Kicks & the bootleg of the show was called Fight Against Austria. I bet the people who went home wished they’d stayed for the show when they saw it broadcast on TV.

#rainbow Gates of Babylon from the San Francisco bay area. First time I heard this it was early morning before sunrise and I was driving east through some desert in the south west. A friend gave me a mixed cassette tape to check out and this song came on just as the sun was rising. I was so mesmerized I didn't realize I was gradually speeding up and didn't catch myself until I was just over 100 mph. The song still gives me chills when I hear it.

There's an interesting backstory behind this show. At the show before this one in I believe Austria, Blackmore got in a physical altercation with one of the promoters and got arrested and thrown in jail. As his lawyers are trying to get him released from jail this show in Munich was ready to go. The band, crowd, opening band was all in place and still no Blackmore at the venue. When Blackmore got released he jumped in a car and they drove like mad to get him to the venue in Munich. The crowd was made aware of the situation and were offered a ticket refund if they chose to leave. Some did, most stayed and Blackmore went right from the car, was given like ten minutes to compose himself and Rainbow went on stage around midnight; Blackmore still in the same stage clothes he'd worn in jail for the last few days. I love a happy ending.

A day or two before this performance they were playing in Austria, Ritchie Blackmore took offense at a security guard manhandling a girl at the front of the stage, so he lashed out and kicked him with that big platform-shewed foot and broke his jaw. They were detained by the authorities and didn't make it on time, if I recall right, this show didn't start until after midnight.

I saw Dio for the first time at the Crest Theater in Sacramento. I was in the Air Force and myself and another Air Force buddy drove an hour north from our base and waited in the Alley before anyone showed up. We ended up chit chatting with the guitar player Tracy G. We finally got in line and got our tickets. When we went inside we notice everyone was sitting down in seats (it was technically a theater so it's understandable). We sat down and my friend and I both looked at each other and said "Why is everyone sitting down?" We got up and stood right in front of Dio's microphone front row center against the stage. The lights went out, the band came out and started playing the beginning chords of Double Monday. Then Dio came out grabbed the microphone stand spun and bounced it off his knee. It spun in the air and he slams back down on the stage and proceeded to kick out ass for the next 2 1/2 hours. I got to meet him after the show and he was amazing. He truly does treat you like you're the only person in the room when he is addressing you directly and isn't distracted by everyone else around him.

May favorite Deep Purple/Rainbow song. It was originally on Deep Purples' studio album Burn and sung by David Coverdale but then appeared on Rainbow On Stage with Dio on vocals. I saw Rainbow and Dio perform this live in their very last show. Rainbow only played two songs that night (Kill the King and Mistreated) before leaving and then their next show was cancelled completely and then Dio and Rainbow parted ways. Back to the song, Blackmore was absolutely amazing and it was the best performance of any song I have ever seen live and I've seen a lot of great bands.

Thank you SO much for this! I've probably heard 20 live versions of that song either recorded or in person, and that was the best performance I've ever heard. Ronnie truly sets the bar for vocalists that no one has yet been able to hit. It literally gave me chills, and it's 100°! And I'm no Diophyte, either. His voice has been and probably will always remain unequalled. He was a phenomenon. Thank you also for your amazing appreciation and description of what made him so great. His funeral was one of the most bittersweet and memorable days of my life. He inspired my vocal career from the first time I heard him sing "Last in Line" at age 12. But, sadly, his voice died about a decade before he did. He was truly the closest thing to a vocal god this earth has ever known. People can't even appreciate how incredibly difficult it is to hit those notes because they sound so full, effortless, and powerful when he sings them that, until they try to hit them themselves, the full glory of his gift goes unappreciated. I'm so glad the two of you got it. If you liked that one, check out Stargazer. Wow!

Great feedback on the song/emotions. Sorry to hear about your difficult family circumstances.
I don’t know if you know that Ritchie got out of jail just in time to do this gig. (hence his extra exuberance throughout) He got in a tussle with a security guard at the previous show who had manhandled a female fan near the stage. He broke his jaw unfortunately. Ritchie was hidden in one of the gig cases by the roadies to avoid the police but was eventually arrested. The tour was almost cancelled. He was released without charge (magistrate must have been a Purple fan 😀)
I saw Rainbow on this tour. Glad this film exists for you. Ritchie seemed to have been set free by leaving Purple.
I often wonder if they will be remembered far into the future. I’ve been a Deep Purple fan since 1969. I saw them on the U.K. Machine head tour in 1972 when they were at their peak. It’s “true” what their producer Martin Birch said about them a few years ago .... “Deep Purple were the best at what they did”. Music is very subjective of course and statements like that can sound a bit over the top. Personally I’ve never seen a better live rock band in decades of regular gig going.
Strangely Purple have never been recognised in general culture the way bands like say Pink Floyd are.
However someone once asked a Chinese official during the 100th anniversary of Communist rule if communism had been successful. He replied “It’s too early to say”.
Over the long haul I think Purple’s legacy will outlast many of their contemporaries due to their musicality/virtuoso level playing and their sense of humour 😀. Their classical leanings will help (check out their Concerto for group and orchestra by the late Jon Lord, their organist. (The 1969 and 1999 performances are on DVD/UA-cam). This is Ronnie singing a Roger Glover song at the 1999 concert which I attended. There were people from Norway, Japan and South America in the queue going in, who had travelled specially.

It’s said that in 500 years time the only person from our era widely known will be Neil Armstrong. Perhaps the only rock song remembered will be Smoke on the water 💦. Well .... perhaps just the riff.

This is RAINBOW playing a Deep Purple Song. David Coverdale (now Whitesnake) was the original singer on the record. Funny fact to this perfomance: Richie was still wearing the same clothes as two days before at the gig in vienna. He was arrested because he kicked a security guy. The concert in munich started with a delay of 3 or 4 hours!

I saw Rainbow Live in Brussels, Beligum in 1977 during their European Tour. It was a great line up with Ronnie James Dio, Cozy Powell (Drummer) , and of course of Richie Blackmore (Guitarist). I would never forget it. Thanks guys for the memories....

Richie Blackmore's Rainbow. Did you know before Rainbow, Dio was in a band named Elf? It's pretty cool. Like a 70's hard rock band. He sure didn't have the style we all love and know but you should check out #Elf (early dio's band) sometime. It's kinda cool. I like it. ....... Well listening to Kel go on. Rich, play that girl #rainbow stargazer !

Elf is the first studio album by Ronnie James Dio's blues rock band called Elf. Produced by Ian Paice and Roger Glover of Deep Purple, the record was released in 1972. In this album, Dio is listed by his birth name Ronald Padavona. Though Dio had used "Padavona" for songwriting credits on earlier singles, Dio explained in an interview in 1994 that he used his birth name on this album as a tribute to his parents so that they could see their family name on an album at least once.

Thanks for sharing this as i have not seen this before. A classic Deep Purple song (originally sung by David Coverdale which is definitely worth checking out) performed by Rainbow with the awesome Ronnie James Dio at a time when they were all in their absolute prime. God Rock is a great way to refer to this Kel x

I watch a lot of your vids since I discovered you two a couple 3 or 4 months ago, and I wanted to say yet again, you two are absolutely jewels. Just watched the Stryper Soldiers vid. I totally get Riches reasoning on missing a band. Only so many you can listen to, or buy, etc. Anyway, I love the channel, and what a wonderful way to take a tragedy of your sons passing and make such a beautiful thing from. It's just so touching and you two obviously love each other and have great hearts and minds. Godspeed to ypu and yours. Oh. Love the Jackson of your sons. I've been playing guitar since about 1977. Wow, yeah. I'm old. 😂 but still catnip to the ladies..😂
