    The silage looks pretty good, a bit dry perhaps but looking forward to the true test - if the wee beastys eat it. I still havent got my head around not using tyres, i get that some people think its not green. I beg to differ, Tyre will exist and be the by product of transport for years to come. The best bit of using tyres is that your recycling. Giving somthing a second use is better than it being disposed of after a single use. Its going to be really good for you not getting covered in wet gunge stripping the pit back through the winter - that is a huge positive, a job i hated with every sinue of by being. Thanks for sharing your experiment and results, Its great having it come direct from a farmer than a sales pitch from a manufacturer. Still wish i could get over and put some work in for you, You are an absolute top bloke. Happy Christmas to you and your family and all the best for the New Year.

    Well the results speak for themselves. Look very good at leat now that's one worrie off your mind . I don't think anyone that has watched you from the start would say your not brutally honest, and that what I like about your channel. I have to say the sand bags look the job, my dad was a man for covering the pit with dung for years . Ah the memories of trying to put back the sheet in the hight of the winter 🥶 then we moved to tyers ,what a difference but you would still be drowned and covered is s..t , but the sand bags look great. I would have thought smaller heavier bags would be better on the sides and maybe two side by side to increase the surface area . Anyway great video and happy Christmas to you and yours

    Do you moderate or delete posts? I posted a comment yesterday; it has disappeared. I shared this:
    "Silage at the top surface near bunker silo walls is notorious for excessive spoilage. Borreani and Tabacco (2010), in a survey of 54 corn silage bunker silos, noted elevated temperatures at the top of the silo near the wall even in silos with no visible spoilage under the film. This is because it is almost impossible to seal this joint to exclude air and runoff water. Recently, the practice of lining the walls of bunker silos with plastic and lapping at least 1.2 m of the plastic over the top of the forage when the silo is full and then applying a top layer of plastic over the lapped plastic has proven an effective way to seal that joint (Bolsen, 2006). Muck and Holmes (2009) showed losses were lower and fermentation products were higher when the wall was lined with plastic compared with when a top cover of plastic alone was held against the bunker silo wall with gravel-filled bags. Borreani and Tabacco (2014) compared 200-μm PE to a 130-μm OB film in 2 farm bunker silos where the walls were lined with the same films used for the top cover. Even using film down the wall, samples in the upper parts of the silo near the wall showed higher DM losses than those far from the wall. There was also a significant interaction of film type and distance from the wall, with the difference in DM losses relative to the wall smaller using the OB film. Lima et al. (2017) evaluated 2 covering systems in 8 dairy farm bunker silos: an OB film (45 μm thick) on the walls, which extended approximately 2 m over the top, compared with no wall film. Both treatments had a single layer of standard PE film (180 μm thick) top cover. The shoulder silage under the OB film was similar to that in the central core of the silo (positive control) and significantly better than the shoulder silage under the standard covering system, with lower counts of spoilage microorganisms, lower DM loss, and greater estimated milk per tonne of silage. These effects were more pronounced at 0 to 101 cm from the wall (Lima et al., 2017)."

      No I haven’t deleted anything in weeks, so if it was posted yesterday it should definitely still be there. I only delete bad language or vulgar statements as I don’t want young kids to read them. It could of went straight to spam if there was a link attached to it so i’ll check that and if it has i’ll approve it. That’s good info to have for sure, that wall facing the south and gets battered by the rain and wind so that’s probably the cause right there. Thanks Gerry 👍

      @@IFarmWeFarm It is possible I had a senior moment and deleted it in error when editing!! (54 yrs old and messing up more often)
      Someone else has also recommended lining the walls with plastic in an earlier comment. I grew up on a farm, in Longford, and Johnston Farm Machinery is at the end of my road!
      I did Agricultural Engineering at UCD in the late 1980s, so I'm always interested in the technical side of farming. I live in London though, so no farming for me!

    • @IFarmWeFarm
      @IFarmWeFarm  2 роки тому +1

      That’s a south facing wall so rain hits it’s head on, that probably has a lot to do with it, but I was surprised to see it still get through the side covers. 👍

      @georgiaannbicknell6129 2 роки тому +2

      @@IFarmWeFarm Adrian: don’t think it gets through the cover as my much as the colder wall creates a temp drop that allows condensation inside the pit. I am thinking you couldn’t have done a better job. There’s moisture in the silage with the covers on and the cooler wall allows it to condense. Like when warm air hits the side of a cooler beverage bottle-condensation occurs. You’ve done the very best with what you’ve got. Excellent as always, man!

    You're always going to have a bit of waste Adrian but i think it's going to be minimal in that pit. Silage looks great from what i can see👍
