Heya, sudomemo designer here! Liked the simple editing with no real flashy effects. Helps to connect more with the content and your feelings and thoughts in general. Glad you took a deeper look into Sudomemo than some content creators I've seen talk about it too, they barely scratch the surface and or misinterpret features.

Ahh, the nostalgia… I remember trading in my DSLite to get a DSi specifically because I wanted to use flipnote studio. Something you didn’t mention in your video but I ended up deeply involved in were flipnote rps! You treated each frame of the flipnote like a panel of a visual novel and would add to it by making spinoffs with your rp partner. It was dragon angst all the way down but also the birth of my love of storytelling, good times.

im a simple woman, i see someone talk about flipnote and i subscribe. having grown to be an artist i think flipnote hatena is half of what made me who i am today, i didnt know how to use deviantart as a kid and didnt always have access to a computer, on top of that i found drawing with a mouse really annoying and hard, the fandoms and all the stuff that people would find via deviantart or other sites i found via flipnote, thats probably where i made my first fursona tbh
one thing i was expecting you to mention when you talked about hatena being used as a social media platform was the "am i h0t" flipnotes lol (tbh idk if yt will hide my comment for that) where people would post their selfies with this thing and ask that, i always thought that was weird and i remember this one all star hatena parody that mentioned those in the lyrics, ive not been able to find the flipnote but it went like "hey now, youre an artist" or smth, im sure itll unlock some more memories if i find it lol
i discovered sudomemo and the community many years ago i even talked to the owner at some point when he had just gotten the servers with the flipnotes but forgor about the archive project for many years until you brought it up here, im glad its finally up and running. i couldnt find myself, i think the search feature is a bit broken (going through the pages many users would repeat) but im glad its functional enough, i was able to find two of my favorite creators whose flipnotes werent all that well archived on youtube, and being able to see all this extra info like their alt usernames makes search so much easier, this archive goes above and beyond, thank you so much for the reminder hehe, honestly didnt expect to find people like keke over there, hes famous for his flipnotes but i had just assumed he never used hatena bc i dont remember him from back in the day
yet another thing i was expecting to see u mention was how there were these adopt flipnotes where you could adopt ocs with stars or open ended flipnotes for others to spin off their continuations and contests and oh jeez im sure the types of flipnotes could be a full video of its own
ANYWAYS thank you for this video, admittedly ive not watched that many videos about the history of the app so this unlocked some memories ty ty

When I was in the 7th grade, I had a friend group on Hatena where we’d all draw our OC’s in a “chat room” flipnote, which someone in our group would make daily. We’d leave thousands of comments just drawing & talking. Some of my friends in that crew were AMAZING animators - a bit older than me. No-one, Paul, Drak, Mellow, SoraCat. Mannn those were the days.

There's a niche of people who never forgot Flipnote while not necessarily have been in the community : unsurprinsingly, animation students. It might even have been the foundation of our vocation for some of us. Honestly it's quite a good interface for animating, and there's great artwork out there. I still have my DS, this video made me want to open the app again :)

Flipnote was such a major part of my tween years, I remember logging on daily and just watching for hours and making flips of my own but never uploading. Flipnote was one of my first major introductions to fanfics as well (I’d always read the 1D ones). I’m so glad you mentioned the archives, I didn’t know it existed and i’ll be happy to look up and rewatch some of my favorite creators again ❤️❤️❤️

Omg I used to use flip note hatena religiously when I was younger. I used to be addicted to different series people would draw, mainly ones that utilised this particular anime template that was super popular in the genre. I’ve tried to find them again but haven’t been successful haha. The shutdown of hatena was sooo devastating to me

Flipnote Hatena made such an impact of the course of my life, and I really wouldn't be the same person without it. I started animating because of it, as well as taking art more seriously. If it didn't exist, I would have never found EpicGuitars animations and realise animating was something you could do!
I plan to get back to creating animations soon (Took a break because of carpal tunnel) as it's something I miss so dearly, maybe one day \I'll have my own show, either way, it's all thanks to Flipnote Hatena :)))

  • @nice-qm5jc
    @nice-qm5jc Рік тому +21

If you know of the animation meme community on youtube, it was a rudimentary version of that where you would try and get popular but there were somehow giants like Gizmo and Guitar. There were a lot of audios that were ingrained into my brain where when I hear it now I can visualize the animations perfectly. Hatena got shut down and everyone was devastated, until we moved to Sudomemo where a decent amount of people moved but a lot of popular animators petered off. Guitar has a youtube channel now but I can't remember what it was, they used to animate their Pokémon personas and frequently get on the front page. Seeing your "I'm back" thumbnail made me laugh because we were all under or around 15 and treated putting flipnotes up like a job.
Also, there wasn't a lot of controversy in the community, the most anyone ever criticized was copying a popular user's art style.

My core memory regarding flip note was getting a red DSi with it pre-installed on Christmas, my sister wanting one too because of flip note, buying a different version and not being able to find it on the DSi ware store, and not talking to me for months because I had "a special DSi". For years I thought I was the only one with this mysterious software

Hey just so you know if you want to make your videos look like you are not reading a the text you have written try putting your script stightly above the camera make it as horizontal as possible. That way your sight line is more alligned with the camera and looking from left to right makes it more natural that looking downward. Great video though!

one type of flipnote i remember stumbling on was roleplay flipnotes. generally between two users, theyd just publish, download, add a reply, publish, repeat.
when things got a bit.... "graphic", the user would "censor" it with a colour on a higher layer. whether the artist actually drew what was under varied. those rp flipnotes always got a curious amount of downloads too lol. never saw anything traumatising though, thankfully. love flipnote. ❤

Some people will say they want it again on the Switch, but I don’t… it wouldn’t be the same due to a completely different landscape of tech we live in. It apppeled heavily to children and teens and we were lucky to experience and have memories of it.

I really loved this!! It was a great internet history video about something that I had absolutely no idea existed, and I also loved the aspect of you going back and looking at your own notes. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do in the next one!
Also in a weird coincidence I just noticed that you and I have very similar subscriber counts, like 4 away from each other which is spooky. But also congrats on (almost) 500!

I never knew about hatena as a kid, but I do have a weird hatena experience. My mom brought me to this weird photo studio to get pictures taken, and I had my dsi. I had flipnote PURELY because it was free. While in the lobby waiting for our turn, I noticed the other kid also had a dsi. He sent over a bunch of hatena flipnotes he had saved, and I still have them to this day. It's super weird having a general understanding of the vibe of the culture, without ever having been on it.

This video was too good and very nostaglic for me. I remember popular Flipnote animators like Salty Milk, Nicole Trinity, and Fleesveon. Flipnote Hatena never worked on my 3DS so I always looked through the Sudomemo page.

I adored Flipnote so so much. It was my first experience with online communities so I feel lucky such a relatively safe and nerdy place was my first exposure. I loved the Zelda and anime animations so much and I got into sonic because of the cool animations and one artist ScourgesBestBuddy. I was devastated when it shut down and saved a few of my most favorite animations. It’s a shame it didn’t last into the 3ds or move to the switch. I’m glad so many people are trying to save what’s left of the art and love put into those posts people made

i never had a DSi, but i was absolutely obsessed with the hatena artists (like shinyeevee) who uploaded their work to youtube/deviantart. the hatena art style was where my own art style started at, it had a very big impact on younger me

There’s a wired background buzz I can hear on this video. If you have a mattress push it up against the wall you’re facing for recording it will improve audio quality of your mid massively and might help remove the background buzz.

I really like your relaxed and emotionless way of talking, I don't know why it makes the jokes funnier. I think I'm just tired of all these hyperactive UA-camrs screaming at me so that I stay watching them.
Flip note studio was my childhood, I made tons of flip notes but never uploaded them because I didn't have internet connection back then, I wish I could watch them again :(

Besids the rich history of Flipnote I can not believe your username. I swear to god I had something similar for Kik. But woah. I got my DSI XL in 2015 the flipnote feature was so cool. I was so grateful for my DS since it was my very first and MY own to keep and use a gaming console. Such a fun video and a wonderful trip down memory lane.

Despite all my time on the various DS platforms, and having seen a significant amount of content on the net Im willing to bet was made with this app, I didnt know about the app itself, until now. Excitedly, but patiently, waiting to see what else you talk about.

Does anyone else remember a comic that was uploaded on flipnote hatena about a guy who got turned into a lucario? The flipnotes would play super fast and you had to download them and read them in the editor. It was like 100 flipnotes long and I read it when I was in middle school probably around 2013 or 2014. I've wanted to find it again for a few years just to figure out what it really was cause I only vaguely remember it.
