SA2B Tutorial: 99 Lives Glitch

- This is a very easy glitch to perform, and very useful. While it's not good within a single-segment speedrun of the game, if you run individual levels this can be a real lifesaver. We use underflow of the lives counter and back ring abuse to get ourselves 99 lives in a pretty efficient way. You'll need Rouge's treasure scope and possibly her Mystic Melody. You can destroy the metal boxes with a correctly placed drill dive, though.

Wow it worked Thx I’m gonna need these lives for the last story! My only gripe is that when I close out of the game my life count resets but it’s ok because it’s so easy to pull off the glitch again

Note this works on Dreamcast too. Had around 50 lives stocked until I did Last Story, so this was much appreciated for someone trying to A-rank every mission.

I really needed all those extra lives for the last story, since the standard 4 lives is just so not enough. Works as well on ps3.
For people thinking it doesnt work make sure you get hit a fall into the ring TWICE then get the live after

For anyone who dosent have the big ring there you have to take damage for it to appear (just figured out the hard way) also you might have to complete the stage first

this still works on the steam version, it's getting me through final story :)
This also happened in Sonic 2 on Genesis. Make sure you have 0 lives, first. In Chemical Plant Zone Act 2, wait underwater until the drowning timer goes to 1. Get hit by spikes. Sonic will drown, but lose another life when he reaches the bottom of the screen. It's the same with this.
I did this cheat because I could not finish the final story but now that I have 100 lives, I can do it

Cm Speckt year late answer i did it on the black labeled version, back ring didnt show up until i died and fell into it, it works tho
It doesn't work on PC anymore, when you have 99 and get 1 more life you just go back to 0

Does it matter if your copy is Player’s Choice or the original on GameCube? Or if you need to play on a original GameCube and not a Wii that’s backwards compatible?
All the above should work. This sort of behaviour is a very core part of how numbers work inside the game, so it should happen no matter what system, port, or emu you're on.
Just confirmed it on Xbox 360. 100% works. These people in the comments just aren't doing it right.

You have to do the back ring glitch TWO times! Make sure you follow the video exactly and it will work.
I did this, but the 99 live don't carry over to anywhere else; when I leave that stage, they reset to 4 lives and if I die while I have "99" in that stage, I die as if I had "0" lives. Is there something which I am missing?
Make sure you are doing the glitch TWICE and then GETTING THE EXTRA LIFE. This whole process is very important! When you glitch once the game will show 99, but you don't have 99, you have some very high number that the game knows is wrong. The second glitch gets you to one life less than that number, and then you get the extra life. When you do that the game realizes something's wrong, so it resets you to 99. This whole process is critical to getting 99 instead of 0.

I dead twice, but when I try to do the mystic melody, it says look instead
You need to obtain the Mystic Melody upgrade for Rouge in order to be able to play it at these little ruins. You can find it in Dry Lagoon by digging into the painting on the right wall of the big square area you start in.
Does it have to be on SA2B, or can it be done on the original version as well?
So far as I know it can be done on all the original versions as well

Back ring happens when you take damage in M2 for the 100 rings, no other mission. Should work just fine on GC.

Was this patched out in the xbox 360/one version? I followed the steps exactly but when switching from rouge to sonic it resets my lives back to 4 what am i doing wrong... :(
To the best of my knowledge this works on all versions. Make dure you die into the back ring TWICE and then collect the extra life.

Sadly, you need the upgraded boots from Mad Space to affect the boxes
