Yeah. Churchill’s speech… not about D-Day.
No, I came here to comment on that very fact. As far as I know, he gave that speech after the retreat from Dunkirk
The speech was to rally the British people and show the world, and especially the US, that the Nazis would be resisted at every turn. The words were spoken in a time of desperation when the liberation of Europe was the bare remotest of concepts.
I groaned when I heard that part.
That speech was after Dunkirk in 1940.
Exactly the point I was about to make. I was starting to feel some of this guy's fact-checking was a little off-base, but then when he said that Churchill's famous 1940 speech was about D-Day rather than the defense of Britain's beaches, I had to counter it--but you already did.
Churchill's famous speech that you quoted was given just after Dunkirk, not on D-Day.
He edits out "We will defend our island, whatever the cost"

@@leondillon8723 It may have been, but it is better known in British history for the mainly successful evacuation under fire of British (and French) troops from France in 1940, as France was approaching defeat.

He was talking about if Britain was to be invaded.
Get your facts right! Churchill's speech was in 1940 AFTER the surrender of France when the UK was facing a German invasion. He was talking about the beaches of ENGLAND, the air fields in ENGLAND, in the fields, streets, and the hills of ENGLAND!

There were 5 beaches stormed at Normandy, 2 by USA, 2 by Brits, 1 by Canadians. And Montgomery and Patton hated each others guts that is why Eisenhower was put in charge.

Kids deserve to feel how cool it was though when it would be like halloween and all the channels would make it themed and play classic movies ect. Same with Christmas and even thanksgiving even the advertisements would be themed sometimes. That’s about all I miss of tv. Would be very hard to re create that experience with UA-cam
I think you should remember on D-Day, there were 5 beach heads, 2 American, 2 British, and 1 Canadian.
One thing that I think is misunderstood by many people is that vikings were fierce warriors. I mean they are badass, but cunning and guile were just as important. After all, there was Thor and Loki. But most of all, they were amazing explorers and tradesmen. They should be remembered for that
Just a quick, clarification regarding D-Day. All those ships and supplies were British when they were given to the Americans, however, they were all made in the USA as part of lend-lease so in reality, it was mostly American equip. Also, the beach landings themselves. The beaches the American & Canadian landed on (Utah, Omaha, & Juno) were the most heavily defended and suffered the highest casualties whereas the British beach landings at Gold & Sword were somewhat easy by comparison as most of those defenders were farther inland so their actual beach landings were almost uneventful by comparison to the American & Canadian.
Not everyone born in Sparta was a Spartan citizen. The men that weren't made for the army were Helotes. They didn't trust non-Spartans to protect Spartans.
Herodotus makes multiple accounts of Helots accompanying Spartans as servants and soldiers in battles such as Thermopylae and Plataea,[54] often lightly equipped compared to their hoplite counterparts. In his reports on Plataea, he makes multiple accounts of Helots which accompanied the Spartans on the battlefield and made up the mass of the army.
Interesting, while singling out the officers with hair crests, it can make me think of a horse nodding it's head and controlling and pulling the men back after victory on the battlefield?
While shop class was cool, army jungle training is something I'll feel I missed out on and stuff I should know in beautiful america, while I'm sure being pretty smart, and sure to upset the upstarts, I don't think they'd find much use or feel oppressed without pistol stocks myself?

Both the U.S. and Great Britain landed approximately 54,000 infantry troops on D-Day, and Canada landed approximately 21,000. And most of the supplies were originally sent to Great Britain by the U.S.. Great Britain did supply most of the ships and planes but directly due to logistics.

The Germans used horses throughout the war. Only Panzer and Panzer Grenadier units were predominantly mobile. British and American units were fully mobilized. Mobile kitchen units in the German army were horse drawn predominantly. In a 1970’s study of the proposed German invasion of England it was realized that the Germans would have to take every truck (military and civilian) in Western Europe to be able to supply transport off the beaches. Horses were thought of as well, and transport was arranged but horses don’t like being transported in ships.
More horses were in fact used in WWII than any other war before or since.

1. They didn’t have all their armor because they weren’t going to fight, they were going for walk around Sparta. Why? Because the Senate had already voted not to engage.
2. Spartan helmets came in a few flavors. The crest went side to side or front to back. It made it easy for the men to rally on their leaders in combat.
There’s a few episodes on the history channel with archaeologist explaining it.

The "We will fight them on the beaches..." speech by Churchill, was made in 1940, BEFORE the US became involved in the war. Two D-day beaches in Normandy were landed by US troops, out of the five involved with the invasion.
The Churchill speech was about defending England from a possible German invasion before the US entered the war.
"Tables had turned by 1942"? That would be operation Torch, not D-day, and why would the americans have trained for four years for D-day when the US only entered the war 2½ years earlier?
The Churchill quote is about fighting an invasion from Hitler, not about invading Europe.

I high recommended Dan Carlin's podcast Hardcore History. He's got a great series called "Wrath of the Khans" where he goes in depth about Genghis Khan, military tactics, the way he ruled and everyday life.

My grandfather, 2 friends of his and my dad often talked about general Pattons war crimes that may have led to his strange death. They often spoke about Pattons extreme demands to move his army at breakneck speed. On his charge towards Belgium to “rescue” 101 airborne, Patton kept getting slowed down by weather, exhausted troops and German prisoners his army had captured along the way. At some point, Patton gave a direct order to execute all prisoners. My grandfather’s friends were in Pattons army at that time, they were haunted by this event, finding many of the German soldiers friendly and just longing to go home. The discussion always led to a belief Patton was to be court martialed for ordering the execution of POWs, but his strange death prevented this. Would love to know if anyone else knows this story or if anything can be proven. Is any aspect of Pattons time leading troops in Europe redacted, classified or missing ever or to this day.

Yeah his facts are skewed. Of the planes used i think his calculator was needing batteries. Way more than that was used. He stated only numbers for 2 types of planes. As if the US only had that little. And the supplies used might have been close to accurate but the materials used were from the US. He forgets we had to feed everyone basically. The British isles could not have supported themselves let alone an invasion. And the idea may have been Monty but it was not his details in the planning.

You completely misrepresented 300 your statement. They never portrayed Sparta as being military, only with the treatment of the men in their society. Although they didn't insist that everybody be the best man. They could be they had no patience for somebody who was lazy and wouldn't work. But they gave every consideration that could shoot anybody. It would work as hard as they could. You are correct in that they would not tolerate weakness on the battlefield, but that was because one weak man could end up killing, not just himself through his inability, but 3 men beside him.
Please try to keep your comments correct if you're going to present yourself as a historian.

Total crap about Churchill's speach. Had nothing to do with D-Day but after Dunkirk to help British morale. Germans were not down to horses for transport after D-Day but started the war using horses for its main transport. The basis for plans for the return to France started before USA became involved.

The movie The Longest Day was made 17 years after WWII and depicted virtually every country involved and made English and French participants just as important as the Americans. Of course most of the ships and planes were British. Britain was the country they were launching from only a few miles away, stands to reason. But regardless of who supplied what equipment the majority of beaches and for sure the hardest and bloodiest beaches were won by the AMERICANS! As far as Churchills speech about fighting on the beaches etc, that speech was made years before and talking about England defending against GERMAN invasion. Talk about propagating misinformation about war, you are just as bad.
