The thing that has made Rolex successful is NOT changing the models or reacting to trends of the whims of consumers. They can’t and won’t release a hot new model every year. That goes against everything they stand for. They’re at the tail end of revamping the entire line with new movements and materials. Once that’s done you shouldn’t expect a hot new model more than once or twice per decade; and don’t expect it to be whatever gets the most votes on Instagram.
I think the blind spot of the watch “community” is that we think every watch caters to us. As a whole, who knows how many people who buy a Rolex even know the model name?
I'm a 216570 owner. I think if you truly like Rolex for what it is and were a fan before they were going for premiums, they did a great job. Also, cool glasses Christian!
Michael you are a gift to Horology. I think this is my favorite show, now, and it takes both of you young gents to pull it off. Great video, once again, guys!
You guys have amazing chemistry. Awesome to watch the channel grow over the last few years. Been watching since a couple thousand. Hope to run into you in NYC one of these days.
Dear Michael, if I'm not mistaken, I think you made a reference to The Office at 24.02 Christian didn't seem to get it, but don't worry, some of us did and appreciated it (if indeed it was a reference)
I love the overseas. But the reason VC hasn’t blown up is so lame and very simple, you can’t rhyme the name easy in a song. AP and Patek are much easier to get into a song. And if you said VC in a song people would think venture capital... lol so they are left where they are until they start playing the marketing game and get some bigtime influencers and celebs to jump on board. because it doesn’t seem like it’ll happen naturally like with AP and Patek. But you never know, singer or rapper “x” could say it in a song tomorrow and all of a sudden, boom. Who knows anymore lol
the biggest issue right now for Rolex is the gray market. I think that they want to ramp up the production (unify the movements, limit the development of the new tools for new models) and reintroduce some models - meaning that they want to stabilize the prices. In this case, I like what they did. Cudos to them!
@@Tdr-jv2ncoh burn ! Didn’t expect anything better from a Rolex fanboy. It is not a matter of money, It is a matter of taste, something you clearly don’t have. I like the new Explorer 2!!! I like the steel bezel and what they did with the wider bracelet! I understand its not to everyones taste, but Its perfect for ME and my 7.5 inch wrist!!!!👍
We needed these releases from Rolex...it’s shows and proved Rolex makes mistakes too. Some of these were pretty rough. Shoutout to Tudor and TAG: crushed it!
I was dying watching Michael’s face and reactions in the first two minutes of the video, and then when Christian put the picture of the Overseas up right over Michael ‘s face I totally lost it! Awesome job guys.
We obviously know a bit more now, but the movement DID change in the Exp II from the 216 to the 226. Pretty major movement change. I think the exterior changes/touches were improvements, but certainly not seismic. Should there have been more? Yeah, probably. But that movement change was significant. All that said, I still love it and just bought a 226 new a couple weekends ago for my 40th.
AD texted me Rolex explorer gold two tone $11150 and Rolex submariner no date $8950 both is available. Which one do you guys is good buy? Or good for investment future?
One thing that so far I have not seen mentioned is in the Rose Gold DD both 36 and 40mm sizes Rolex have introduced a new stone dial which looks stunning called Eisenkiesel which translated into English means iron pebble and is a quartz based rock with iron in it, I can´t wait to see one in the flesh as it looks a beautiful material.
Vacheron Constantin's are the most beautiful things. Their split second chrono is the best watch release of this year so far. The Overseas automatic design is awesome, kind of big though. Explorer: really happy to see the return of the 36mm! Rolex did two tones Explorers in the past, cannot care less. Totally agree that solid gold would have been awesome. Explorer II: are we sure they will not release something later this year?
The watch that Christian is talking about, the one with the light behind the hands, is made by Mondaine, The Backlight I think is the name of the model. Thx for the video guys. Very nice like always.
Thank you for addressing the Chronograph elephant in the room. Lange shook the market with the Dato. PP, AP, VC were not making in house. But still charging more than Lange. Even Rolex, using Zenith base for the Daytona. And it took all of them years just go in house for their Chrono.
Love this assessment of the 2021 releases. Love the fact that Christian loves the two tone Explorer. Love that you guys both like the palms dials. Best way to review is to wait a few days and offer a counterpoint to everybody else’s POV. And I completely agree with everything you guys said!
That Lange is fantastic; Nomos’ Tangente update is great, especially combining the blue dial with green date. Always nice to see straight lugs! When I saw that two-tone Explorer I got so angry I sold my 114270 with no regret. JLC deserved the attention for that beautiful four-dialed Reverso.
I think Rolex not fully done for 2021..........however is not a good thing ..................sometime slow down and focus can help to stabilize the demand, price, etc provided if Rolex wanted.............to me current Rolex 2021 focus on unpopular models, focus on right size......Standardize their "baseline production".........I think Rolex is doing something for the market and start to listen and respect their Supporter.........However for sure, Rolex is making themself to the "Next Level" ........................Just my thinking
Vacheron Overseas are currently selling for $7k more than RRP for the black face and $15,000 more for the blue face. It is definetly going the way of the classic holy trinity steel sports watches.
I personally prefer the watch company which intentionally makes its watches impossible to buy (at least for mere mortals), because I love snobbery. There is nothing like the strategy of "Treat 'em mean, keep 'em keen." to whip me up into a frenzy of lust for a watch. As Archie says, we cannot just buy an affordable watch and move on with our lives. No! Buying a watch has to HURT! Like a swift kick to the balls! This is a sad but all too often reality of the watch world.
Question: Why should Rolex do what everyone expect? Reoccuring patterns makes everything boring and we can almost always quess what comes next. Wouldn’t that get boring? Wouldn’t it be somehow boring having that green AGAIN in the dial of a jubilee edition?
If you lumed the underside of the hands how would they get light exposure? The lume would have to go all the way through the hand and then you'd see it on top like a normal hand.
I am not disappointed at all: 1) The Two-Tone Explorer is just so fetch. 2) They made my Explorer 39 so much more valuable while giving me a perfect reason to start getting out of the brand. And into an Overseas, as aatter of fact. 3) My '70's Quartz Two-Tone Cartier Santos Ronde just became so much cooler. Dare I say, even fetch.
Hello Theo and Harris, I am your avid UA-cam fan from the Philippines. This may not be related but I need your advice. Christian is right, those who love vintage rolex WILL like the new 36mm Gold-Steel Explorer (1) , like the 36.5 square by VC???? discuss at the start of the video. the trend towards classic standard sizes of 34 to 36mm are definitely going strong in the MEN's watch design ... while the Women's watch ,are still upsizing due to rolex's cutting their 26mm female Datejust and women's watches upsizing are still going strong.
VC needs to make the Overseas 37mm with the center seconds hand instead of the offset small seconds. AP does with the Royal Oak and it sells extremely well.
It's funny because most people are getting to the point where they don't give a shit about Rolex anymore when you can't even buy their entry level models now. The 36mm dials are interesting but not enough to make anyone buy them from the shop window unless a professional model is included as part of the purchase. The 36mm explorer will also flop after the initial demand dies down
Hello Christian, love to see you guys well, always wish you guys the best. Straight to business: I know Rolex gets information from here, so here is my message to Rolex: I love what they did this year with the Explorer 36 and the explorer 2, especially the black version, the change of hands is very little but it has taken the watch to a whole new level, The other releases for the date just are in true rolex fashion but not for me; this is why we and I love Rolex, it is all about the little nuances that make the difference. However, Tudor worries me and they better do something; adding leather to the 1926 line is very far form what needs to be done with that line. The black bay 58 releases, let me make it brief in teenager language-WTF? What happened to the Pelagos line, it is way too bulky, online influencers should stop hard selling the pelagos as a modern tool watch, giving excuses for its over sized dimensions, isn’t the black bay 58 a modern tool watch as well? Smooth bezel Datejust on oyster bracelet is an amazing sport watch, especially with rhodium or blue dial. Also similar but slightly cooler in my opinion is the Milgauss. Similar style, but quirky and different. Nice video!
I really like the remake of the old Explorer II. Nothing has changed and I am happy about that, because the old design is simply great...and if Rolex had decided to modernize the look, surely they would have messed it up.
Rolex Birthday: Same Old Zzz JLC Birthday: The most complicated 4 face Reverso ever! Rolex needs to up their game. They’re becoming an advertisement agency rather than a watchmaker these days.
Bottom Lume on the hand wouldn't work that much because Lume needs to be exposed to a light source to charge. If it will be at the bottom it wouldn't glow that much.
Totally disagree on the Daytona. That’s the winner for this release IMHO. Looks amazing. Although a bit bummed cause I have the same watch without the new dial. The loser is the re-release of the batman on the oyster. Curious about your thoughts on what it does to value of the older BlNR. Regarding the Explorer II, I kinda like keeping it without the ceramic. Agreed though they should have added green. That would have been awesome. How did they miss that.
Am I the only one slightly bothered that Rolex released some of these same designs in other colors that no one is talking about? The fluted dial (what Michael called honeycomb) in blue is as hot as any watch I've seen from Rolex lately and the silver palm dial is more subtle. I would love the blue fluted dial Datejust in white gold and steel.
Great video. I had to pause it to stop laughing at the mental image of Michael being tossed from the Nomos design meeting! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who likes the new two tone 36mm Explorer. However, I hate the palm frond DJ dial. Looking forward to Part II!
On reflection, I think Christian would deserve to be ejected from the meeting as well for his suggestion that lume be placed on the underside of the hands.
It’s part of a 10 year dual brand strategy. Rolex will move more towards high and end precious metals to add value to the brand and Tudor will pick up the affordable ss products. Holding back ss Rolex models is part of the plan to force customers to either trading up into bimetal or down and to strengthen the Tudor brand. Effing clever!
I love the new 2021 Rolex! I will go with The green palms for sure! Love it. And sorry but in this days that everyone is an “expert” and everybody makes reviews I really don’t care what others says! I love the new Rolex’s ❤️🙏🏼
Why aren't tilted watches a thing? It is so fun to look at. So far the only tilted watch that I saw is this beautiful VC and the longines avigation model.

The biggest disappointment is the Black bay chrono, it is nothing but an empty dream and promise to buyers who are thinking they are purchasing a daytona, it is destroying the design of the daytona in my very strong opinion.
The daytona needs not to do anything with a diver watch.
The black bay chrono is a failed project and is being continuosly pushed down our throats by inlfuencers.

The Overseas is better than the RO or the Nautilus, change my mind.

11:29 I can't agree more, there are some features that we have to accept that are not functional but just for the design and beauty of the watch.

VC is an old money conservative traditional brand. Celebrities, Rock/Hip Hop stars have not hyped VC. That's why they are overlooked.
Christian needs to give Michael more of the spotlight!!!
Great video though guys!!
Palm DJ is fun. But the oyster and fluted just pops for the palm imo.
I can tell you that the blue OS is boutique only and it’s harder now to get black and sliver dial
I love the new 2021 Rolex! I will go with The green palms for sure! Love it. And sorry but in this days that everyone is an “expert” and everybody makes reviews I really don’t care what others says! I love the new Rolex’s ❤️🙏🏼

Where in the blue hell is Anna!
Why aren't tilted watches a thing? It is so fun to look at. So far the only tilted watch that I saw is this beautiful VC and the longines avigation model.
