Depends how you define cooler. Rolex packs a stronger "oof" for me in terms of heritage and cultural relevancy, but Tudor makes many models which I prefer to Rolex models in terms of looks and feel. So it really depends on your perception of what cool means in terms of watches

I like Oris, had two of them, but the quality of design isn’t there for me. Nor are the movements - with the in-house calibre still not included in Diver 65 range. Aquaracer? Different size and a ‘meh’ design for me. I even prefer the BB58 to Submariners (value retention notwithstanding). Black Bay, with the steel bezel and no-date is less flashy, less in-your-face, much more suited for inconspicuous consumption and younger audience than the slightly old manish (or hedge fund bro) Submariner. Don’t get me wrong - there’s plenty of odd watches in Tudor range. But when they get it right, they really do. If I were to reduce my current collection to 2, I’d happily just own a JLC Master Control and a Black Blau 58 Blue and consider ma myself lucky.

You argue it's for a younger audience, but at the end of the day it's simply for an audience that fail to see value beyond esthetics or the origin of its design. The reason dive watches are popular is because of their practicality and functional design. Remove practicality and functional and you're left with a Black Bay 58. You're simply paying for design.

How about this take... Tudor is what Rolex USED to be. Rolex was a fine watch but while it was always expensive it was accessible. Rolex is now impossible to obtain for most and Tudor has taken the mantle.

I don’t own a Tudor and I’m not a Tudor fanboy. I think their success is a mix of design and the Rolex name. They can’t just be getting to where they are because of their association with Rolex alone. Their Glamour and Style models aren’t flying off the shelves. The BB is selling well because of its design and then further helped by its affiliation with Rolex. The fact that they are pretty much just the Black Bay company now is surely testament to that.

So purchasing departments couldn't go wrong. This a virtuous circle was created - Tudor get enormous exposure and the chance to gain credibility and kudos. So initially, Tudor got where they were because Hans Wilsdorf created a 'diffusion' line, to plug the gap his already well targeted tool watches hsd varved out. That was then. This is now. Yes they took a while to get back on fire but that was as much down to the 'charity' who own Rolex and Tudor not investing in the brand. Now people buy Tudor because they are Tudor and have a reputation they have earned; the Rolex comment now being an adjoinder as in: "Oh, and you also just know it is part of Rolex so it can't be shit, can it?" All that aside, the Black Bay Heritage line is simply a better looking (subjective but it is, not least cos every hommmarrggge watch is Sub-based so you get design fatigue) and a better tool-wise functioning watch than any Rolex equivalent - not because the Rolex toolers can't compete (they can and they would win) it's the fact that people buy steel sports Rolexes as arm candy, brand statements not as functioning tool watches.

As a left handed person, I wear my watch on my right wrist and will notice if a photo is shot on their right wrist. There is a few left handed watches, Pelagos offers it, some better made smaller brands will off the option. And Sordid between good and bad nicrobrands. I don't mind wear the crown is, in same ways better, if I wear it low, or it's a large watch or crown, I find it could be more comfortable even more so if it's a chronography. As far as Tudor, I do think in the past, and far less now, it was the poor mans (not a good comparison) I don't think so now,, they could stand on their own. Oris while I own a few, or not in the same class nor in most cases in the same price range, as far as quality, I'd lean more towards Breitling and some Omega's. Tudor can stand on their own. I love the thought experiment. Where are you take the makers name of the watch and simply look at the quality and the features of the watch and judge accordingly. Okay that maybe not what happens in the real world, but you hint that there will be a return to reality at some point.
Unpopular opinion from a part time watch photographer - watch dials and logos are made to be seen in an upright position, when the watch is upside down on a wrist shot the watch itself looks weirder. I'm not saying that you should flip the watch on the wrist before taking the shot, but there are more creative poses out there that show the watch on the best possible way - 12 o'clock up with brand logos visible and legible!
I did pick up a green/bronze Zelos. It was priced well, and I was interested to see how the patina would grow. Green just happened to be the best choice of dial with the bronze case.
I call them color mafia. They all work together for fashion trends. There are actual designers and influencers that decide which color will be hip next year. This influences clothing trends, even car colors. Note that also some of the new Audi models had green press cars recently. Swatch Group has a design lab in Milan, they know today what color is fashion next year.Then mood boards and samples are handed out. It's not random or chance.

Pretty much any spinoff brand, up or down market, is leveraging pedigree to increase market share, ideally without diluting the parent brand. You should have another conversation about the appeal of Tudor NOT being Rolex, cause that's certainly a bonus to me, and I imagine others who are looking for stealthier options. No dig to Rolex, but they're one of the most widely recognized brands on the planet, and that comes with some status baggage that could be appealing or repelling.
I wish that more watch brands would make watches that can be worn on either wrist, meaning there is no up or down. Think about the Tudor Heritage Black Bay with a stick marker instead of the triangle marker at twelve O’Clock. With some creative text placement, this would be an awesome ambidextrous watch.
JLC or Nomos or Hamilton create a new watch and they barely get a mention. Tudor publishes the same watch in a new color (a boring blue mind you) and everyone loses their minds. Gee I wonder why that is.

Saw the Rolex waitlist and went to Omega Boutique instead. Tudor IMHO is a spill over from the Rolex waitlist. Most spill over people I suspect will fall out of love with Tudor. Rolex brand power extraordinary and here to stay for a long time. IWC, JLC, Omega, A. Lange and Signed are equally prestigious without the major waitlist.
I have a hulk and I hate it. It was cool when I first got it but I grew tired very quickly. The only reason it’s still in my collection is its value keeps going up. Green dials are overrated.

You should make a video covering watch brands that have maid their own unique bracelets for their line. Rolex would obviously own the Oyster and Jubilee design so anybody with the same design would not be featured. Tag Heuer makes their "H" link bracelet and the bracelet to their Link watch.

Tudor was always known to be the sister company to Rolex and it was mostly always boring unless they started to form their own identity which somehow started with the release of the Northflag and being successful a little later with the Blackbays and entirely changed their marketing from boring and unrecognized or not done to using Ambassadors, using videos etc…..Also with the Northflag they started their “in house” clockworks but at that time did not have today’s marketing in place which made the Northflag to be discontinued recently. However I think this is a great watch, underrated and the start[oint of all. After that using the “in house” movements being used in the BB’s etc. combined with a modern marketing they went on….and one has to say their marketing is quite different to Rlx. Somehow D
I think Tudors association with Rolex helps a lot, but they have backed that up with heritage, great design and extremely competitively priced models with great power reserves and either in house movements or damn good partnerships like the B01 with Breitling. As for Ad’s having integrity, sure they do exist but ultimately if a customer is spending $200k a year and flipping, realistically the AD is a business and will take their custom as it pays the bills. Would they rather sell to someone that loves the piece and will keep it? Of course they would but this way they have the demand lined up, can sell when it suits them for financial and tax reasons and still have you coming back for more. The demand over availability is building Rolex prestige with their aim of moving into the PP market space, leaving a Tudor shaped gap behind them.
I’m the opposite: would not consider Tudor for years because Rolex has lost control of their distribution (sorry Christian, the ADs you know are the exception to the rule - most know their sales guys are selling to their buddies to flip and getting a cut). But did enough research then held a few at the AD, now a extremely happy BB Pro owner with a Pelagos 39 arriving in a few weeks. PS - hate earth tones so no browns or greens.

The AP Black Panther is a bit ridiculous but when I saw a video on it ‘in the metal’, I was surprised at how great it looked.
Unpopular opinion from a part time watch photographer - watch dials and logos are made to be seen in an upright position, when the watch is upside down on a wrist shot the watch itself looks weirder. I'm not saying that you should flip the watch on the wrist before taking the shot, but there are more creative poses out there that show the watch on the best possible way - 12 o'clock up with brand logos visible and legible!
Got a green watch, the Rolex OP34 in Olive. Got it the year it came out and love it. Still one of the best green watches imho.
I did pick up a green/bronze Zelos. It was priced well, and I was interested to see how the patina would grow. Green just happened to be the best choice of dial with the bronze case.
I like how Omega had the green AT out for a year before the green craze hit. Its a great watch. Sitting on my wrist right now.

I call them color mafia. They all work together for fashion trends. There are actual designers and influencers that decide which color will be hip next year. This influences clothing trends, even car colors. Note that also some of the new Audi models had green press cars recently. Swatch Group has a design lab in Milan, they know today what color is fashion next year.Then mood boards and samples are handed out. It's not random or chance.

Pretty much any spinoff brand, up or down market, is leveraging pedigree to increase market share, ideally without diluting the parent brand. You should have another conversation about the appeal of Tudor NOT being Rolex, cause that's certainly a bonus to me, and I imagine others who are looking for stealthier options. No dig to Rolex, but they're one of the most widely recognized brands on the planet, and that comes with some status baggage that could be appealing or repelling.
Telling it like it is and saying the thing that everyone else is afraid of saying. Love it!
I wish that more watch brands would make watches that can be worn on either wrist, meaning there is no up or down. Think about the Tudor Heritage Black Bay with a stick marker instead of the triangle marker at twelve O’Clock. With some creative text placement, this would be an awesome ambidextrous watch.

JLC or Nomos or Hamilton create a new watch and they barely get a mention. Tudor publishes the same watch in a new color (a boring blue mind you) and everyone loses their minds. Gee I wonder why that is.

If Tudor was only Tudor because of Rolex, how come none of their other lines besides the Black Bay shot to the moon? The Pelagos, the Ranger, the 1926, etc? If the nepotism is so powerful, shouldn't we all be on a waiting list for a 1926 (whatever that is). Nah, people just know that we're getting a steal on a rolex (tudor) made submariner with snowflake hands for under $4k

Well, the Tudor design wouldn't exist without Rolex and we are all trained to like the Submariner look hence the success of Tudor. Maybe not the only reason but part of it for shure.

Saw the Rolex waitlist and went to Omega Boutique instead. Tudor IMHO is a spill over from the Rolex waitlist. Most spill over people I suspect will fall out of love with Tudor.
Rolex brand power extraordinary and here to stay for a long time. IWC, JLC, Omega, A. Lange and Signed are equally prestigious without the major waitlist.

I have a hulk and I hate it. It was cool when I first got it but I grew tired very quickly. The only reason it’s still in my collection is its value keeps going up. Green dials are overrated.

Saying you only like Tudor cos of Rolex is like saying you only like Pixar films cos of Disney and highlights the tedious nature of hypothetical like this. Without one the other wouldn't exist so to imagine they are not linked is totally redundant
You should make a video covering watch brands that have maid their own unique bracelets for their line. Rolex would obviously own the Oyster and Jubilee design so anybody with the same design would not be featured. Tag Heuer makes their "H" link bracelet and the bracelet to their Link watch.
Tudor does the "vintage Rolex" look, because Rolex won't...thus since they are the same company...Tudor equals Rolex in people's mind.

You are 100% correct with Tudor. And its a phenomenon that only takes place with watch enthusiasts - if you ask the average person who doesn't know much about watches, they likely will never have even heard of Tudor before
Tudor was always known to be the sister company to Rolex and it was mostly always boring unless they started to form their own identity which somehow started with the release of the Northflag and being successful a little later with the Blackbays and entirely changed their marketing from boring and unrecognized or not done to using Ambassadors, using videos etc…..Also with the Northflag they started their “in house” clockworks but at that time did not have today’s marketing in place which made the Northflag to be discontinued recently. However I think this is a great watch, underrated and the start[oint of all. After that using the “in house” movements being used in the BB’s etc. combined with a modern marketing they went on….and one has to say their marketing is quite different to Rlx. Somehow D
An Oris Aquis is not the same price range as a new black bay or bb58. Not really a fair comparison at all.
I think Tudors association with Rolex helps a lot, but they have backed that up with heritage, great design and extremely competitively priced models with great power reserves and either in house movements or damn good partnerships like the B01 with Breitling. As for Ad’s having integrity, sure they do exist but ultimately if a customer is spending $200k a year and flipping, realistically the AD is a business and will take their custom as it pays the bills. Would they rather sell to someone that loves the piece and will keep it? Of course they would but this way they have the demand lined up, can sell when it suits them for financial and tax reasons and still have you coming back for more. The demand over availability is building Rolex prestige with their aim of moving into the PP market space, leaving a Tudor shaped gap behind them.
You two are clowns. Tudor timepieces are terrific and easily stand on their own two lugs. Oris & Tudor are not in the same league lol

I’m the opposite: would not consider Tudor for years because Rolex has lost control of their distribution (sorry Christian, the ADs you know are the exception to the rule - most know their sales guys are selling to their buddies to flip and getting a cut). But did enough research then held a few at the AD, now a extremely happy BB Pro owner with a Pelagos 39 arriving in a few weeks.

This day is today with me. I have owned 4 Rolex watches. I put Rolex on my wait list, waiting until I want to spend $10,100.00 on a steel watch. Get a Smiths commando, much better.
Green is also my favorite color, but I don't want a green watch. Blue for my watches, a little more subtle and matches everything.

Rolex submariner isn’t available in real terms, Tudor makes similar style watch with its own heritage and also a link to Rolex ...for half the price.
