If you are on your way down to Adelaide, I suggest that you don't go down the Stuart Highway from Port Augusta. Instead, just South of Port Augusta turn left through Horrock's Pass to Wilmington and through the Clare Valley. We drove many times from Darwin to Adelaide, and the transition from Outback at the bottom of Horrocks pass to farming country at the top was always stunning. This route will also take you through the Clare Valley, which is one of the premier wine regions of Australia and extremely pretty. We have been following you for a couple of years now, and as parents of children of your age, we have one important message for you - EAT MOORE VEGETABLES!
I dont believe vegemite and peanut butter is actually an Aussie thing. Peanut Butter and honey is what I had for school lunch back in the 80's or vegemite and cheese.
I myself have never heard of anyone doing that. Crunchy peanut butter on buttered soft white bread, on its own, or smooth peanut butter + apricot or blackberry jam, again on fresh (good) white crusty bread - yumm!

On the compressors , I think many of them are just not built for doing more than one tyre at a time , unless you let them cool right down , heat being the arch enemy of the little compressors , and some of the real cheapies are sadly just rubbish. It’s hard to beat a good quality bigger model that is probably a bit expensive and a bit of a pain as far as carting around with you on a trip. Years ago , I made up an air line about 12 foot long with a Schroeder connector on each end , so in a pinch I could steal some air from one tyre ( possibly the spare ) or multiple tyres to put air in another flat one , yeah I know not what you you want pumping them all up. On mixing the spread ingredients, peanut butter and jelly ….. Vegemite and peanut butter OMG … that’s bad !, it’s like crossing the streams in the ghost busters …. total plutonic reversal !😂😂😂, joking , too each his own . Not for this little black duck though 😊.

My son is an NT Police detective who works in Darwin. They don't speak the real truth and neither do you. Nothing will change when you sugar coat major problems. Meanwhile he will most likely be sent down there yet again, away from his kids to ensure other people's kids don't cause trouble. While they were in Darwin a woman was punched in the face by a drunk person at a subway in the city at one O' clock in the afternoon and while we were at a club on the beachfront, some drunk person tried to climb the fence into a children's play area. These two will try and tell you that it's safe there too. Just because they weren't assaulted or had the car windows broken doesn't mean they know anything about Alice Springs.
Most people assaulted in Alice are aboriginals being assaulted by other aboriginals, mostly for payback. Most arguments are about debt. Lived there for 5 years.
Cheveyo, thanks for unlocking a forgotten memory regarding the smell of Australia. Growing up in San Diego (where eucalyptus trees were imported with the thought of using them for railroad ties only to discover that’s not effective … and that the trees will do a hostile takeover of the landscape), when I first visited Sydney in 2000, I immediately felt at home due to climate and smell. To me at that time, Sydney was like San Diego and San Francisco merged into one. Really miss it and am so happy to be back with you guys!
I lived in Sydney for quite a while, and had a similar experience but opposite! I visited the US in 2000, and flew into San Francisco from Sydney, and it reminded me of home so much! It was the first stop of my round the world travel experience, and I was young and nervous to be doing it by myself. It was so nice to start the trip with somewhere that felt so reminiscent of home!

The addition of chopped parsley to the veg avo combo is truly awesome and a nutrition bomb - and as @spun_01 suggested, throw a runny yolked poached or perhaps fried egg on if you want even more. 👉Avo and Vegemite on toasted fruit/sultana loaf is definitely a favorite - the sweetness of the fruit/sultanas mixed with the salty tang of the vegemite is a taste sensation! 👈Vegemite and cheese sandwiches were always a quick fix staple. No matter what, always use lots of butter! 👌

Loved your positive comments on Alice Springs. We recently spent 4 days there so much to see and do felt completely safe. Desert park the Old Women’s Gaol Museum was fascinating as was the Flying Doctors experience. Once again well done to see it for yourself and form your own opinion.

Hi Tia. My husband is Japanese and the way he found to like Vegemite was to think of it like soya sauce - salty and with umami. The trick also is to only have a thin scraping of it on well- buttered toast.

Moved to Australia in 1987 from the UK. Lived in Alice for 2 years. Vegemite is what Australians eat in the morning to make sure the rest of the day gets better. Enjoy your time in Oz.

Have you guys tried the "Lemon Butter Spread" (also known as "Lemon Curd") you can buy it in all supermarkets including IGA in a jar. Really nice on fresh white bread or on toast. More Tangy like Marmalade if your not a sweet tooth for spreads like Raspberry/Strawberry jam etc.
Sandwiches cut into triangles are definitely superior. Yes, it is really cold this year (frost in Queensland!), so you might want to invest in some thermals and warm boots before heading to Tassie. There may well be snow. 😊

hi i am a 71 year old travelling the whole of 20 24 on an event tour i came to Alice at the beginning of june for the Finke desert race, and headed of to Boulia for the camel races, im now back in Alice, i ride a mobility scooter about 7 klm into town nearly every day and have only found friendliness,, my next event is the birdsville races, i love Alice and thinking it will become my winter home. my summer home is Byron Bay. love your shows.

I strongly recommend a visit to Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges on your way down from Alice. Wilpena is north east of Port Augusta in South Australia. The hike to the top of St Marys Peak is well worth the effort.
In case anyone was wondering, you can box up warm clothes in packages of not more than 5kg to send to Op Shops in the outback. That’s what my cousin did with my late Aunt’s clothes. My cousin had worked in desert communities for decades and knew how valued winter clothing is.

As an Aussie, growing up in the Qld outback, travelled in the NT, lived & worked in Alice Springs, travelled the Stuart Hwy, also lived in country Australia & in cities, I long for the outback always. Watching your vids has made me nostalgic to be back out there. It’s a shame that Alice Springs has now got such a reputation as I believe it’s a jewel in the centre, important for all to know it’s qualities. If you are in Pt Augusta, about 45min drive south is Whyalla where you can swim with the Giant Cuttlefish, see the "big" ship (on land) and they do Steelworks tours. Vids on youtube re Whyalla Cuttlefish and HMAS Whyalla. Also, the Marina has dolphins that you can interact with as they follow the boats in. Also, also the Circular jetty.

Definitely not. Peanut butter and Vegemite sandwiches are 100% a real thing. They were my dad’s favourite sandwich when I was growing up. I’m 52 and he was 88 when he passed away in March. Lots of people commenting here also grew up eating them.

I guess the 1st time Alice Springs got any sort of mention in media was Neville Shute's book 'A Town like Alice', a telling of the tale of an Australian POW falling in love with an English girl that was also a prisoner of the Japanese in WW2. A good read, like most of Shute's works.
Just out of interest Nevil Shute also wrote On the Beach which became the 1959 Hollywood movie (starring Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner). It's set in Australia and is very chilling end of civilization story.

One of the things I enjoy about your videos, is how you mess up the names of every place you go to. Lol. It’s very cute though. I remember swimming in the hot springs at Mataranka 20+ years ago and there was a huge python sleeping on the edge of the water where it could keep warm. It didn’t move and everyone just ignored it.
Mataranka is completely safe to swim. Best time to swim is middle of the night. Seems heaps warmer in comparison. Your right guys, back in the seventies and early eighties (pre Crocodile Dundee), the place was quiet and magical. We used to go skinny dipping. Not anymore!

Re the Great Sandwich Debate: triangle cuts are mathematically better than a centre divide, as the ratio of open sandwich face along the cut compared to the crust is much higher with a triangle cut . So yes, they taste better!

Jokes about Vegemite. As kids we would be served Vegemite on toast, cut to triangles for breakfast, by our adoring Mothers. We called it "axle grease" on toast. It was rumored to have some kind of vitamin/mineral properties and made from the discarded sludge remnants of beer distillation. We also had it on sandwiches with cheese slices for school lunch. You mentioned smelling Eucalyptus in the air. I have noticed it after a dry spell after a few minutes rain. What I noticed when I relocated to Perth from Melbourne, was the heady fragrance of peppercorn trees. This became a defining memory of my first days in Perth. Unmistakable. There are also rumors that travelers returning to Australia by ship after years overseas can smell the eucalyptus well before landfall. Happy trails.🌄

I loved this video. We lived in Alice for a couple of years before we moved back to South Australia. (it got too rough up there) We loved exploring around the beautiful countryside up there. Our favourite places were Simpson Gap. Were My hubby and were married by the water. Rainbow Valley . Ewaninga rock carvings and loved watching the sun come up over the Henbury Meteorite Crater. .

Tia, the best way to get used to Vegemite is to start off with Cheezymite. Just like Vegemite but the bitter taste is far less.(and have it on toast with loads of butter but not too much Cheezymite. If you end up liking that you can progress onto Vegemite and then fully appreciate its full flavour. You may not find it until you reach Adelaide? Enjoy. 🙄

It’s also a shame you didn’t travel south to north as it was cold and not wet but that has changed and now both cold and wet. Next time you’re at a supermarket try Vegemite with Bega cheese, it’s more creamy and mild. Currently 7.2 c and feels like 5.4 c. If you’re going to come to Melbourne you are more than welcome to borrow some warm clothing in preparation for your Tasmanian trip.👍
All Australians do like Vegemite, but no one eats it with peanut butter. Vegemite and cheddar cheese (or kraft singles) is very common if you want to try vegemite but need something to take the edge off it.
Maybe recommend you buying some tickets to a AFL game in Adelaide before you have to head home, seeing you couldnt get them last time you were in Australia, maybe buy them on line?
Are you guys visiting Wilsons Promontory before you see Tassy? I have travelled to 40 countries and my favourite place to go for an unwind would still be the beaches at the Prom. Its a must do! (And the only big things there are boulders on the beach - truly amazing!)
You should turn off also William creek road at cooper PD and come back through the Flinders ranges. I'm not sure that's your plan or whether you've gone past there yet, but that would be awesome. I mean it's a bit cold but the views are amazing. Like Lyndhurst Lee creek Murray Farina The Old Ghost town, then parachilna , the gorges , willaoena pound station etc
It's Mataranka ie Matt😊. Many moons ago (late 70's) on coach camping trip, we camped there overnight & despite signs saying not to, about 6 of us did a midnight swim. Set candles up on stone walls, & yes cleaned up after we had finished. Was beautiful. Seems to have been upgraded since then. Lol

Thank you for the non-judgemental commentary on Alice Springs, like so many places it’s getting such bad press about specific instances of bad behaviour rather than the good. In my view Vegemite needs to be in sparingly applied to toast as it is quite overwhelming (I’ve been eating it nearly every day for 60 years). It is great to put in stews as a seasoning (just a teaspoonful) though. Some beautiful scenery in this, make sure you’ve got warm clothes as you come south as it’s cold this year 🥶
To put things in perspective; there were 210 recorded murders across Australia wide in 2022 and the figure has been falling for decades, a figure that can be compared to the USA. Alice Springs is a large town where all your relatives, (in some places 10-20 people) live next door, the temperature in summer is >45C or 100F, and, while I have no opinion on anyone’s relatives, the government response to homelessness and overcrowding is not to build more houses but to send in more police. I share your approach to "conflicts"....the media it sells far more videograbs and soundbites when they show the worst of times. In general the vast majority of people are open-minded and respectful of everyone else. I don't tar a whole town/demographic of people because of a 60 sec video clip on the news...people are individuals and not a collective :) I'm glad you went and shared your actual experience - just another reason to love this channel.

If you're heading back down to Adelaide you should visit the big rocking horse at Gumeracha, the whispering wall, Melba's chocolate factory, and the Birdwood National Motor Museum. All in the Adelaide Hills North East, wasy day trip.
Alice Springs is fine during the day - most of the troubles have been from roaming kids after dark who get up to no good. Many of the accomodation options have gates etc to secure your car overnight.
I think your missing one of the biggest parts of oz culture , clubbies! and pubs. I have been watching your vlogs from before you came to oz and I haven't seen a mention of a single club yet, correct me if I am wrong. In just about every town there is a lawn bowls club (bowlo), an RSL club, (rissole) a sports or leagues club, sailing clubs, (sailo), surf clubs, golf clubs the list is infinite, almost. You dont have to join but you need to show your licence at the door. Most offer good cheap food and drinks, coffee, poker machines (pokies), meat and seafood raffels, betting facilities for horses, dogs, trots just about anything you can bet on. The country ones are great for having a chat with strangers and susing out the local area. Your staying in air B&Bs and motels which are great but pubs have a whole different atmosphere especially in little towns. Its usually a shared bathroom and a bed in a room and a shared kitchen. Like you, I don't (can't in my case) drink alcohol but you can sit in the bar have a chat to anyone in the place, drink ginger beer or zero alcohol beer or wine. The food is usually great, with exceptions, but that's the fun of the whole thing, sometimes you go to order a meal and the cook hasn't turned up so the owner will make baked beans on toast for you, or the bedroom door doesn't close , there is no water in the bathroom its all these things you talk about and remember not the 5 star accommodation, although that's good to. Anyway just a thought , its a big part of the culture and nothing like it as far as I have encountered overseas. RSLs (Returned & Services League of Australia) for instance were set up to assist veterans and it is a not for profit organisation although not all RSLs are part of the league. Surf clubs get the benefit of the rent and the income generated allows them to buy equipment to save lives so in these cases your supporting a good cause by attending, the meals are usually great, cheap and healthy and the view which is unparalleled anywhere in the world, is free. Speaking of surf clubs its an entirely different setup to the States. There are professional lifeguards on duty during the week but weekends and public holidays are patrolled by volunteers that give huge amounts of their time to keeping people safe. You could do a whole episode on surf clubs and how they work and not scratch the surface. I reckon the club and pub scene is worth a mention as most visitors don't even know about it unless they have relo's or know somebody here. In which case they get introduced to it very quickly. Stay safe.

Growing up in San Diego (where eucalyptus trees were imported with the thought of using them for railroad ties only to discover that’s not effective … and that the trees will do a hostile takeover of the landscape), when I first visited Sydney in 2000, I immediately felt at home due to climate and smell. To me at that time, Sydney was like San Diego and San Francisco merged into one. Really miss it and am so happy to be back with you guys!

I lived in Sydney for quite a while, and had a similar experience but opposite! I visited the US in 2000, and flew into San Francisco from Sydney, and it reminded me of home so much! It was the first stop of my round the world travel experience, and I was young and nervous to be doing it by myself. It was so nice to start the trip with somewhere that felt so reminiscent of home!
I’m from Perth and I’ve been to San Diego. I think Perth is more like SanDiego than Sydney.

The addition of chopped parsley to the veg avo combo is truly awesome and a nutrition bomb - and as @spun_01 suggested, throw a runny yolked poached or perhaps fried egg on if you want even more. 👉Avo and Vegemite on toasted fruit/sultana loaf is definitely a favorite - the sweetness of the fruit/sultanas mixed with the salty tang of the vegemite is a taste sensation! 👈Vegemite and cheese sandwiches were always a quick fix staple. No matter what, always use lots of butter! 👌

Hi Tia. My husband is Japanese and the way he found to like Vegemite was to think of it like soya sauce - salty and with umami. The trick also is to only have a thin scraping of it on well- buttered toast.

Have you guys tried the "Lemon Butter Spread" (also known as "Lemon Curd") you can buy it in all supermarkets including IGA in a jar. Really nice on fresh white bread or on toast. More Tangy like Marmalade if your not a sweet tooth for spreads like Raspberry/Strawberry jam etc.
Sandwiches cut into triangles are definitely superior. Yes, it is really cold this year (frost in Queensland!), so you might want to invest in some thermals and warm boots before heading to Tassie. There may well be snow. 😊

hi i am a 71 year old travelling the whole of 20 24 on an event tour i came to Alice at the beginning of june for the Finke desert race, and headed of to Boulia for the camel races, im now back in Alice, i ride a mobility scooter about 7 klm into town nearly every day and have only found friendliness,, my next event is the birdsville races, i love Alice and thinking it will become my winter home. my summer home is Byron Bay.

I strongly recommend a visit to Wilpena Pound in the Flinders Ranges on your way down from Alice. Wilpena is north east of Port Augusta in South Australia. The hike to the top of St Marys Peak is well worth the effort.

In case anyone was wondering, you can box up warm clothes in packages of not more than 5kg to send to Op Shops in the outback. That’s what my cousin did with my late Aunt’s clothes. My cousin had worked in desert communities for decades and knew how valued winter clothing is.

As an Aussie, growing up in the Qld outback, travelled in the NT, lived & worked in Alice Springs, travelled the Stuart Hwy, also lived in country Australia & in cities, I long for the outback always. Watching your vids has made me nostalgic to be back out there. It’s a shame that Alice Springs has now got such a reputation as I believe it’s a jewel in the centre, important for all to know it’s qualities. The East & West Macdonnell ranges are amazing & worth the trips to see the gorges. It’s the real spirit of Australia, & very happy you are experiencing the spirit. Cheers, Charmaine xx
Used to be no speed limit, a couple of Japanese people driving Ferrari's were inexperienced drivers were killed so the limit was limited to 140klms.
If you are in Pt Augusta, about 45min drive south is Whyalla where you can swim with the Giant Cuttlefish, see the "big" ship (on land) and they do Steelworks tours. Vids on youtube re Whyalla Cuttlefish and HMAS Whyalla. Also, the Marina has dolphins that you can interact with as they follow the boats in. Also, also the Circular jetty.

Definitely not. Peanut butter and Vegemite sandwiches are 100% a real thing. They were my dad’s favourite sandwich when I was growing up. I’m 52 and he was 88 when he passed away in March. Lots of people commenting here also grew up eating them.

I guess the 1st time Alice Springs got any sort of mention in media was Neville Shute's book 'A Town like Alice', a telling of the tale of an Australian POW falling in love with an English girl that was also a prisoner of the Japanese in WW2. A good read, like most of Shute's works.
Just out of interest Nevil Shute also wrote On the Beach which became the 1959 Hollywood movie (starring Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner).
It's set in Australia and is very chilling end of civilization story.

I remember swimming in the hot springs at Mataranka 20+ years ago and there was a huge python sleeping on the edge of the water where it could keep warm. It didn’t move and everyone just ignored it.
Mataranka is completely safe to swim. Best time to swim is middle of the night. Seems heaps warmer in comparison. Your right guys, back in the seventies and early eighties (pre Crocodile Dundee), the place was quiet and magical. We used to go skinny dipping. Not anymore!

Re the Great Sandwich Debate: triangle cuts are mathematically better than a centre divide, as the ratio of open sandwich face along the cut compared to the crust is much higher with a triangle cut . So yes, they taste better!

Jokes about Vegemite. As kids we would be served Vegemite on toast, cut to triangles for breakfast, by our adoring Mothers. We called it "axle grease" on toast. It was rumored to have some kind of vitamin/mineral properties and made from the discarded sludge remnants of beer distillation. We also had it on sandwiches with cheese slices for school lunch. You mentioned smelling Eucalyptus in the air. I have noticed it after a dry spell after a few minutes rain. What I noticed when I relocated to Perth from Melbourne, was the heady fragrance of peppercorn trees. This became a defining memory of my first days in Perth. Unmistakable. There are also rumors that travelers returning to Australia by ship after years overseas can smell the eucalyptus well before landfall.

I loved this video. We lived in Alice for a couple of years before we moved back to South Australia. (it got too rough up there) We loved exploring around the beautiful countryside up there. Our favourite places were Simpson Gap. Were My hubby and were married by the water. Rainbow Valley . Ewaninga rock carvings and loved watching the sun come up over the Henbury Meteorite Crater. .

Tia, the best way to get used to Vegemite is to start off with Cheezymite. Just like Vegemite but the bitter taste is far less.(and have it on toast with loads of butter but not too much Cheezymite. If you end up liking that you can progress onto Vegemite and then fully appreciate its full flavour. You may not find it until you reach Adelaide? Enjoy. 🙄

All Australians do like Vegemite, but no one eats it with peanut butter. Vegemite and cheddar cheese (or kraft singles) is very common if you want to try vegemite but need something to take the edge off it.
Maybe recommend you buying some tickets to a AFL game in Adelaide before you have to head home, seeing you couldnt get them last time you were in Australia, maybe buy them on line?
Are you guys visiting Wilsons Promontory before you see Tassy? I have travelled to 40 countries and my favourite place to go for an unwind would still be the beaches at the Prom. Its a must do! (And the only big things there are boulders on the beach - truly amazing!)
You should turn off also William creek road at cooper PD and come back through the Flinders ranges. I'm not sure that's your plan or whether you've gone past there yet, but that would be awesome. I mean it's a bit cold but the views are amazing. Like Lyndhurst Lee creek Murray Farina The Old Ghost town, then parachilna , the gorges , willaoena pound station etc

It's Mataranka ie Matt😊. Many moons ago (late 70's) on coach camping trip, we camped there overnight & despite signs saying not to, about 6 of us did a midnight swim. Set candles up on stone walls, & yes cleaned up after we had finished. Was beautiful. Seems to have been upgraded since then. Lol

Thank you for the non-judgemental commentary on Alice Springs, like so many places it’s getting such bad press about specific instances of bad behaviour rather than the good. In my view Vegemite needs to be in sparingly applied to toast as it is quite overwhelming (I’ve been eating it nearly every day for 60 years). It is great to put in stews as a seasoning (just a teaspoonful) though. Some beautiful scenery in this, make sure you’ve got warm clothes as you come south as it’s cold this year 🥶
To put things in perspective; there were 210 recorded murders across Australia wide in 2022 and the figure has been falling for decades, a figure that can be compared to the USA. Alice Springs is a large town where all your relatives, (in some places 10-20 people) live next door, the temperature in summer is >45C or 100F, and, while I have no opinion on anyone’s relatives, the government response to homelessness and overcrowding is not to build more houses but to send in more police. The results speak for themselves. Thank you for giving an unbiased report on our country. Great video. Thanks.

I share your approach to "conflicts"....the media it sells far more videograbs and soundbites when they show the worst of times. In general the vast majority of people are open-minded and respectful of everyone else. I don't tar a whole town/demographic of people because of a 60 sec video clip on the news...people are individuals and not a collective :) I'm glad you went and shared your actual experience - just another reason to love this channel.

If you're heading back down to Adelaide you should visit the big rocking horse at Gumeracha, the whispering wall, Melba's chocolate factory, and the Birdwood National Motor Museum. All in the Adelaide Hills North East, wasy day trip.

Alice Springs is fine during the day - most of the troubles have been from roaming kids after dark who get up to no good. Many of the accomodation options have gates etc to secure your car overnight.
I think your missing one of the biggest parts of oz culture , clubbies! and pubs. I have been watching your vlogs from before you came to oz and I haven't seen a mention of a single club yet, correct me if I am wrong. In just about every town there is a lawn bowls club (bowlo), an RSL club, (rissole) a sports or leagues club, sailing clubs, (sailo), surf clubs, golf clubs the list is infinite, almost. You dont have to join but you need to show your licence at the door.
Most offer good cheap food and drinks, coffee, poker machines (pokies), meat and seafood raffels, betting facilities for horses, dogs, trots just about anything you can bet on. The country ones are great for having a chat with strangers and susing out the local area.
Your staying in air B&Bs and motels which are great but pubs have a whole different atmosphere especially in little towns. Its usually a shared bathroom and a bed in a room and a shared kitchen. Like you, I don't (can't in my case) drink alcohol but you can sit in the bar have a chat to anyone in the place, drink ginger beer or zero alcohol beer or wine. The food is usually great, with exceptions, but that's the fun of the whole thing, sometimes you go to order a meal and the cook hasn't turned up so the owner will make baked beans on toast for you, or the bedroom door doesn't close , there is no water in the bathroom its all these things you talk about and remember not the 5 star accommodation, although that's good to.
Anyway just a thought , its a big part of the culture and nothing like it as far as I have encountered overseas. RSLs (Returned & Services League of Australia) for instance were set up to assist veterans and it is a not for profit organisation although not all RSLs are part of the league.
Surf clubs get the benefit of the rent and the income generated allows them to buy equipment to save lives so in these cases your supporting a good cause by attending, the meals are usually great, cheap and healthy and the view which is unparalleled anywhere in the world, is free. Speaking of surf clubs its an entirely different setup to the States. There are professional lifeguards on duty during the week but weekends and public holidays are patrolled by volunteers that give huge amounts of their time to keeping people safe. You could do a whole episode on surf clubs and how they work and not scratch the surface.
I reckon the club and pub scene is worth a mention as most visitors don't even know about it unless they have relo's or know somebody here. In which case they get introduced to it very quickly. Stay safe.
