3 REASONS WHY ROCK IS *DYING*!

  • Thank you to Storyblocks Audio for sponsoring this video: www.storyblocks.com/punkrockmba
I lay out the 3 reasons why rock is DYING in the mainstream:
    - Rock fans are stuck in the past, with festivals like Wacken 2019, Download 2019 and Rock Am Ring full of 80s and 90s bands
    - Rock bands no longer want to be rockstars: I compare that with rappers like Travis Scott (see his Netflix documentary) and how his relationship with Kylie Jenner helped his career
    - Rock fans reject mainstream success, unlike Limp Bizkit, Fred Durst, Blink-182, Travis Barker ("Meet The Barkers") and The Used who embraced MTV and mainstream media

Rock fans: rock is dyng, we must do something
    A rock band has success
Rock fans: it's because they are commercial, real rock music is not mainstream.

Yes, I do indeed concur that Rock is definitely on its last legs! To understand WHY I think one needs to consider WHEN and WHY rock and roll had such impact and became so popular in the FIRST PLACE. Rock and roll first emerged in American during the 1950's - a time when Western society was generally still pretty conservative. The old sexual puritanism and rigid conformity standards still had a pretty strong hold over the masses, and people really needed to UNWIND. THAT is why it resonated so powerfully with all those teenagers of THAT decade, and pretty well continued to with young people of the following few decades (the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s). But NOW, in 2020, people don't need rock and roll to unwind cause that old conservatism is pretty well DEAD, or it certainly isn't as pervasive as it was in the past, and most people are already so LOOSE to begin with! In the FUTURE Rock MUSIC will probably still always BE THERE, but it'll be just another kind of music, like any other kind (classical, jazz, salsa, tango, polka, whatever). And it will probably always have it's admirers, like any other kind of music does, but it will never be a BIG PHENOMENON or have any SIGNIFICANT MAJOR IMPACT ever again, .. . THAT is definitely HISTORY.

We are a portuguese rock band that is right now releasing our first record.... and it is sooooo frustrating the lack of support and help we get in our hometown. Last year we released an EP and we almost needed to beg in local clubs and bars to let us play live... They only want cover bands, playing the same old rock songs and dont give a shot to the new musicians that create and produce all their music.. the only gigs we booked were about 100$ for the whole band.
It hurts and its like joking with your work and passion, but we aint gonna stop... The love we have for music, and creating music will always prevail. So if this new album wont let us play live more often and get a bigger fanbase, next year we will record a new album, and we will never stop!

As a person who grew up at rockless home, the only reason why I got into rock was because there were all these rock bands playing on MTV all the time, so I was exposed to them and found out that I liked rock, otherwise, I would still be thinking that rock/metal are the devil's music. For the past decade there weren't a single rock/metal band that top the bills and became know to the average person who doesen't like the genre, and considering that there is no such thing as an MTV anymore, nowdays people just go to youtube or spotify and listen to what they want and are only pointed in the direction of other artists that sounds like the ones they are already listening, as opose to waiting for your favorite clip to come on MTV and while you wait you may se something different that you end up liking. I think the future of rock is pretty doomed. It's not a matter of quality, there's plenty of good bands out there, but eventualy there will be no one to listen to them.

As a young teen i have met so many older metalheads that thought it was a good idea to bully teens for their music taste, while it was the same genre that they listened to. Of course, according to some (not all) metalheads, only "oldschool", "true", etc., metal is real metal, everything too different is of course complete shite, and our generation was of course the last one that took it seriously, all younger ones are just posers and will never understand the true spirit of metal, etc. I hope we rock fans will never become as awful as that, although I wouldn't deny some of them already think that way.

The trouble is that Airbourne, founded in 2003, looks like a band founded in 1973 or 1983, not 2003, zero innovation or anything else, stupid copying of old bands(which was mentioned in the comments, and he seems to have said this).
So I don't think that such bands, even using the mainstream media, would achieve the same success today as that AC/DC or Metallica in 80s.

I mean, mingle metal with punk and you either get thrash, or some core subgenre. Yet metal elitists, especially those who are very vocal promoters of the Big 4 (no hate to Big4) and claim to be thrashers, keep throwing shit at all -core subgenres (except for like old skull HC and grind)... like what the fuck are you doing? It's natural evolution and honestly, I'm better off with metal mixed with a similar genre than mingling it with some dubstep shit (though Korn did it well)

Rock has evolved to the point of creative saturation. It peaked in the mid-90’s by alternative bands who were popularizing all the innovative content from the 80’s underground scene(s). And it’s been in a steady decline since. The newer entrants aren’t doing anything that hasn’t already been done before. And by default, legacy bands are the safer option.

    • @mattrobson3603
      @mattrobson3603 Рік тому +9

That's something that I hoped Finn would get into on this video but he didn't. Rock stopped evolving. Throughout its run as mainstream popular music, rock kept developing new sounds that could keep hooking new fans. From 1950-2000, if you sent any popular song back one decade in time it would absolutely blow people's minds. Imagine someone hearing Elvis in 1947, or Jimi Hendrix in 1957, or Guns and Roses in 1977.
The last time that there was a big, new popular style in rock was Nu Metal. Someone hearing Limp Bizkit in 1990 is going to find it surprisingly novel. Even if they don't end up liking it, it's still going to be quite unlike what they were currently hearing.
But since the early 2000s there's been nothing to take the place of Nu Metal at the top of the rock popularity heap. As a result most new rock music sounds a lot like old rock music. Take a Five Finger Death Punch song and put it on rock radio 20 years ago and it's going to fit right in next to a Godsmack song.

@@mattrobson3603you do have a point in regard to nu metal but I would say that emo rock, and the garage rock revival of the 2000s were truly the last innovations in rock at all. Say what you will but emo rock definitely brought in a new audience to the genre alongside new sounds but I really think that once that died off in the early 2010s, there wasn’t much left to innovate. Alternative rock and post grunge continued into the 2000s as well but has become so broad that it’s hard to decipher if they’re a new genre of rock or just doing what has already been done before.

Many issues in play here for sure but to your point about the good number of excellent fem. fronted or all female bands: probably for rock or any genre to have a strong resurgence there would need to be an environment where both guys and girls can go to a show and both be assured of having a great time (thinking heyday groups like Chicago, McCartney/Wings, Aerosmith, Elton). The bands with women are doing well now due I'd expect partly to being conscious of fostering that environment. This has long been a contentious point for the heavy music exclusivity-minded sausage fest. The women have been mastering their instruments and shredding with the best - giving due respect and support is probably in the genre's best interests.

I think one of the main reasons rock has cooled off, not necessarily dying, is the majors labels are playing it safe with who they sign. Let me qualify this by saying I'm 38 and was a teen during the last hoorah of rock in the 90's. Back then, you had "gateway" bands into the more extreme genres being promoted by the majors. You had bands like Pantera pushing extreme metal acts, Marilyn Manson pushing goth/industrial, Nirvana pushing punk, Tool pushing technical/ prog metal and Nine Inch Nails pushing electronic/industrial. If you were a fan of the music these bands were putting out, you could look into their influences and dive deep from there. The major labels don't take chances like that anymore on "extreme" acts.
I think the cost of musical instruments factors into it as well. It's helluva lot cheaper to buy a complete digital "studio" then it is to buy a rig for just a guitar. For a couple hundred bucks you can create a complete song/album in your bedroom, on headphones, alone. You don't have to worry about making a lot of noise to piss off the neighbors or mom and dad while you're creating music.
Also there are a lot of schools that don't have music programs anymore. For a lot of would-be musicians, that's the only source of formal education they can receive. That feeds back into letting digital studios do the heavy lifting of keeping music in time and on key. Why specialize, in say guitar, when with a base understanding of music theory you can create a whole song by yourself on your computer.
For most kids, there's nowhere to play. If you aren't in a major city there aren't any venues for your hardcore band or whatever to play. I think people are also more apt to call the police these days for a noise complaint for some kids making noise in dad's garage. How many parents are willing to deal with that all the time? There also isn't very many practice studios to rent out in the sticks if you're lucky enough for your parents to be able to afford it.
Basically, what I think is going on is the environment isn't right for rock bands to grow. It's a culmination of things. Cheap digital studios, no gateway bands in the mainstream, the expense of guitar/bass/drums and nowhere for kids to make a racket without getting hassled for it.
The shitty attitudes from "old heads" doesn't help either. I've heard so many people in my age group bitch about "emo shit bands". If I were a teen, I wouldn't want to be around nostalgic, grouchy assholes, either.

You can get a good guitar and amp for under $500 which if you're a kid in middle or highschool and you really want that Ibanez rg with a peavey amp that's only a few mowed lawns and walked dogs and babies sat for a few weekends before you get a good rig for a good price. Also with those same recording programs you mentioned you really don't even need an amp, just have to get a decent audio interface to cable through and you'll have waaaaay more tone and effect options than any amp or pedal can provide. With that setup not counting the mac as a part of the cost you can still get a good recording set up for around $500 still. Even if you only get the daw and you just program all your songs unless you're aiming to be a hip hop artist or a DJ you'll need real instruments because while they are getting better most plugins are still off from the real deal.

If my memory serves me right, Rock has always been on a wobble between the center of the mainstream and complete irrelevance, the lynchpin has always been bands that appear seemingly out of nowhere to shake the system. In the late 60s it was the heavy metal progenitors like Black Sabbath, Iron Butterfly, Led Zepp, Steppenwolf, etc. In the mid 70s it was the Sex Pistols, the Ramones and the Clash with the origins of the punk movement, in the 80s, well the 80s had alot of bands crop up, Thrash came up in this time with the big 4, Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, (also hair metal happened but we dont talk about that) the early 90s, the grunge explosion hit like an 18 wheeler with bands like Nirvana, Soundgarden, AiC and Pearl jam falling into the centerfold of pop culture, followed quickly by Bay Area punk in the mid 90s, Bands like Rancid, The Offspring, Pennywise, Bad Religion, Social Distortion, and probably most mainstream Green Day, then there was a little break, as Hiphop was a dominating force for a while, and then between about 2001-2003 there was a boom of alt rock bands, particularly from the New York scene with bands like The White Stripes and The Strokes, then on the other side of the globe, bands like Arctic Monkeys, The Kooks, Franz Ferdinand. There was also the big Emo boom with bands like The Used and MCR dominating teenage pop culture for a while, and then idk, around 2008 Cage the Elephant came on the scene and put out a couple banger albums before kinda going more indie pop, but since then there hasn't really been another earthshaking rock boom, honestly I think the reason isnt the fans, or the bands, i think it's the Industry choosing to ignore the underground rock scenes in favour of rap and pop, there are plenty of fantastic and thriving underground scenes (I'm from Toronto, we have a MASSIVE underground rock scene, but nobody really notices because its not profitable anymore.) I think some band needs to pull a nirvana and shit out an absolute banger album to fucking resuscitate R&R because fuck man, it's been out cold a while now

Look at comments of videos of Rock artists and you will see such comments stating it's "real" music. While other genres such as hip hop, pop, house, techno, etc... their fans are too busy enjoying the music to criticize others.
Example... a co-worker of mine long time ago in the early 90s convinced HIS SON... that rap is not real music. He actually converted his son towards Rock music!
The Disco Demolition event in 1979 was the Rock fans disgust and hating on Disco as a mainstream genre. Who the hell does this?! It's the elitist attitude that is cannibalizing the Rock genre they love!

The problem is the huge number of insular, elitist hypocrites who break the genre down into a million sub genres and then hate on all of them other than the one they identify with. Just look at the top comment in this thread, instead of taking the time to shout out an artist that they think deserves more recognition they instead take the time to hate on a band they don't like.

The reason it matters is that much as you mighy not like it bands are a business and if they arent making money they cant keep producing music. It costs several thousands of dollars to produce a album with amy kind of decent mixing. The rap scene has it alot easier in that sense as there is plenty of uncopyrighted beats and background music for them to use and they just have to use a microphone to record their vocals.

I've been getting back into metal and rock in a big way lately, but it has been tricky to find bands to join because there's not many rockers in my area, everyone is like 30 years older than me and are not into anything harder than Clapton. Probably doesn't help that the one big rock/punk/metal festival that used to be held here was cancelled indefinitely a few years ago, about the same time that the whole live music scene was killed off by our city council being filled with NIMBYs who are so intolerant to nighttime noise that the crossing alarms switch to silent mode after 8pm.

European metal fan here, and you do have some serious points here, and the figure about Travis Scott having x3 as many listeners as Metallica really hit the point home with me. I would make a point though - The fact however mainstream festivals tend to have newer headline acts while rock acts have the legacy acts, I would argue this is down to mainsteam audiences not having much loyalty and moving onto newer acts once their appeal has run out, while the rock/metal fans stay with their bands for the most part. E.g. Some of the latest festival headliners in the European scene include Sabaton, Ghost, Parkway Drive, Gojira, etc. While they formed in 99, early 00's, so might not be a "new" band, they are the new crop of headliners that aren't just "legacy" bands and do have the rockstar feeling, we just take longer to grab them up to that size as their growth is more based around touring and releasing strong albums, rather than labels pushing singles on radio for a quick success.
Love the video anyway, keep up the awesome work

It depends on the act, as a lot of people have been pointing out many of the newer acts are just references to much older bands who have basically been forgotten Ghost and Blue Oyster, Greta Van Fleet and Zeppelin, Airbourne and AC/DC or that completely unmemorable band which is just Rage against the Machine again.
In the underground people are basically just rerecording the music of the 80's using modern production.

I kinda agree, the mainstream industry seems to be intentionally catering to a young demographic with a short attention span by refreshing its artists every year while making others obsolete, while rock fans are all about replay value. That ultimately still doesn't address the problem of rock dying, which is kind of sad, but it ain't worth sleeping with every LA socialite and getting your face on E! or Buzzfeed for the privilege of being 'relevant'. If rock is meant to die, let it be so. At least rock did it its way.

The cultivation of the local rock scene is the best way to save the genre. Don't believe me? The Punk Rock MBA is full of comprehensive videos detailing the rise of different scenes over the years (it's my favorite thing about this channel). There has to be a place for bands to develop before anyone can break big. This video did a great job of pointing out that we all have to do our part.
However, I completely disagree with the notion that rock has to conform to the mainstream in order to find success. Historically, rock breaks through into the mainstream when it stands in stark contrast to what's offered. Pop gets stale too. Rock has to have something substantial for people to gain interest, not just have rock versions of pop stars. Nirvana didn't knock Michael Jackson from the top of the charts because Kurt Cobain could do a better moonwalk.
While bands do need the attention of the mainstream, it can't be for the same vapid reasons as the "reality stars" mentioned in this video. We need more rock legends, not forgettable trends.

No Nirvana did not, but rock music was still very popular at the time even if it was Motley Crue and the like.
Local scenes are dying. In my area (25mi radius), there is one all ages club . In the 90s, there were 3 in one small city near me. Sure, they could book basement and hall shows these days like my bands did, but there was genuine interest amongst peers in punk, rock and hardcore. That isn't their now. Thst interest lies with the artists he mentioned and folk stuff.
While gear is cheaper and it's easier to record for bands now, with minimal interest from non-musicians, it seems impossible to grow something from scratch. Their does need to be more than 21 Pilots occasionally strumming a guitar to generate interest beyond tired- to me- trap beats.

But isn't history always repeating? Also you named 4 decades a huge amount of time with tons of changes culturally and in terms of rock. Also I'm pretty sure there was a bit of a cultural relapse in the 80s as opposed to the 60s in terms of conservatism. Not to mention the current and constant plauge of conservatism now. Also there was a bit of a rock boom in the 2000's and early 2010's
It's definitely a big part of the history of rock and it is correct to an extent, but acting as if this is the single deciding factor seems myopic. There are a shit ton of other factors and those genres you mentioned are always coming back in new ways merged with different genres. Rock has been extremely stationary.

They don't have this stupid "I hate being successful but also why don't people like me" mentality that Rock and Metal do. rock is already as dead as jazz. there's only so much you can do with a given set of criteria before the sound looses the interest of an audience. so you tweak it and try something else, and when that gets old tweak a little more. that's the evolution of a genre. jazz and rock have both been through every possible permutation given the instrumentation. the frontrunner now is rap/hip-hop, a different beast entirely. but let's not forget that rap/hip-hop has roots in r&b/soul. 30 or so years from now something new will come along that has roots in rock, but isn't rock.

New band: *plays new style with electronic or very modern music elements
Audience: Meeeh Thatt's for POSSERS I don't like it, That's not real rock!!!
This is something that happens a lot in rock music when in electronic or hip hop is the other way around, the weirder and crazier it sounds, the better people reacts to it (as long as you don't go all the way up to artistic masturbation) and there is more room for musical innovation.

I disagree. I have literally NEVER heard of someone calling another band a poser before. I mean, sure, if they sound like another band only worse, I will call them a ripoff artist. If a band is 99% pop yet calls themselves a rock band (see Panic! At The Disco), I will say that's not real rock. Personally, when I go to shows, I see lots of punk bands that sound exactly like either the Ramones or Rise Against, and I don't support them because they don't have a unique sound, but venues are very hesitant to allow bands with unique sounds, instead choosing to stick with the safe sounds they're used to. The way for rock to maintain relevancy is by rebranding for sure, but that's an uphill battle at all levels of the music industry.

Rockstar Mayhem Fest was in a similar vein to the WT as they would bring newer bands up to be the main headliners as it progressed. Though that fest was killed as it started picking up all the bands that weren’t really meshing. You had an invasion of the scene kids and super cringy acts that weren’t that good being mixed with actual talent. I saw a lot of great bands because of those fests, but it still came down to like this guy said, at least one big ticket name and none of the ones that were brought up to be openers on the main stage ever really saw top bill. Metal is by far the better genre of music and its something of a shame some of the newer talent aren’t trying to go for the gold outside of a handfull of groups.

As a fan of metal music, let me be clear about what I want to see:
-I want rock and metal bands to be successful, even mainstream successful.
-I don't want them to compromise themselves into a shallow parody of what they were.
-I want rock and metal bands to be in command of their own destinies.
-I don't want these bands to incorporate so many outside voices (i.e. people with little/no direct stake in the music or the band's future) that they become unrecognizable.
-I want rock and metal bands to be louder and clearer about who they are and what they stand for.
-I don't want these bands to so heavily define themselves based on what they are not, or what they hate.
And as for fan's love/hate relationship with this concept of "mainstream" and whatever that signifies, why is it so important to have one's musical choices validated by airplay on television or radio? That's old media. Internet platforms allow for the easy discovery and play of even the most obscure and underground music. Not to mention the deluge of react channels all over UA-cam inviting people to introduce them to different music. I find it far more validating to see the perspectives of nontraditional audiences (like Zoomer kids or African Americans) interact with metal music for the first time, and even get into it! If one judges popularity and success by old media standards, they're going to limit what they can enjoy. Why not create your own stream?
Finally: Hell Yeah, I want to see more rock star personalities! Nothing better than a confident, charismatic band that can not only grab the audience by the balls, but can do so in a way that remains memorable. More crazy get-ups, more larger-than-life figures! More whipping the audience into a frenzy, and scaring parents and authorities! If as you say, there are fewer rock stars, then there is a need to fill that vacuum. Maybe some artists will see that and seek to fill it.

My dad is a classic rock and metal fan, and he often talks about how many of the bands' members are old and such, and he doesn't like the mainstream anymore. And I'm always like "there are new bands that are really good, they just aren't the same because times change". I think my dad would like Spotify but I don't think he'd use it so much because he uses CDs or USBs for his music
Granted, I'm guilty of listening to some not-so-new bands myself. Ice nine Kills, Famous Last words, Motionless In White My Chemical Romance, Green Day are some examples. but I also like newer bands like Mister Misery, Oceans, Ember Falls, Tardigrade Inferno, SpiritBox, The Raven Age, Ghost, Currents, Silent Planet. All were discovered thanks to Spotify (except Ghost and the raven age).
In my opinion, the fans are to blame for the most part because promotors just give us what we want, or at least what the majority wants. And not being part of the mainstream, or not making the bands part of it won't help. I just want bands to thrive and be healthy so they can have more reach and introduce new people to our "club" and the hardcore fans to not be assholes to new people.
I love sharing my music with my friends even if they aren't into the genre, funny enough someone told me I don't look like someone who listens to metal and such (he wasn't wrong lmao).

I think the biggest cause of rock becoming stagnant began in the early 2000s. Rock radio literally began to ignore new bands. They became the Gen X version of classic rock stations. That bothered me. I got so tired of listening to the same songs over and over again that I just began ignoring these stations. It hasn't changed, for almost 20 years now they have played the same 90s and early 2000s rock bands with the occasional band like Halestorm (which, as you pointed out, really isn't a newer band). Sure, the rock culture setup has some issues that were well discussed here. However, the flip side of it is that rock and metal tend to stand the test of time more. 25-year-old bands have put their time in, have built a fanbase, and in most cases know how to play. I listen to rock and metal that was released anywhere from the mid-70s to today, and I'm still always searching for and finding great new bands. The reason why hip-hop festivals are headlined by the hottest new thing of the past several years is that the "the hottest new thing" from 5 to 10 years ago has already been completely forgotten. It's funny to think about how even many of the non-mainstream rock/metal bands from 20 to 30 years ago are still popular and are now far more popular than just about any massive pop/rap act from that same time is today.

I am a 15 yr old boy, I always loved metal before anything in this entire world, I used to save money to buy guitars, pedals and amps, and sometimes I even missed school for practicing guitar solos, riffs and licks. Now obviously having a guitar means you'll be asked to play something on it, my family members and friends used to ask me to play any song that I like...and when I used to tell them that hey I learned a very awsm solo from metallica or guns n roses, a lot of them didn't used to recognize it, instead they all used to make a very annoyed face, saying play something else and all of this was until I understood that the music I'm listen to is dead in my region and probably, not a single soul knows what I'm playing or what METAL even means.

You say that, and that may be true, but _most_ is not _all_ , and they're still getting much more than we are. In the past 10 years or so we established a lot of new rappers to become household names. Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Joyner Lucas, none of these will be forgotten anytime soon because they're great rappers. We also got people like XXXtentacion, Juice World and the likes, these guys are not as talented as the ones I mentioned earlier, but they're decent enough to get hit after hit and they also haven't been forgotten since they started a few years ago. XXXtentacion died and still has a decent following, he also inspired even newer rappers like Scarlxrd to create a brand new genre. What did we get in the past decade in metal? sure, we got some amazing new bands like Code Orange, Knocked Loose, Vein, but none of these bands are doing anything particularly innovative, and none of them have half the starpower or the charisma to become a household name like Kendrick became for rap.

I remember back in middle school I really like Bon Jovi, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and Green Day. Now I also listen to a lot of other genre. What gets my attention is how open the senior artist to junior artist in other genre. They don’t think the new blood are their rivals, they even mentored them. For example, before he got famous Martin Garrix is already supported by Tiesto. Skrillex release his early album with support from Deadmau5. Zedd release his early singles with support from Skrillex. I’m not sure if it’s also the case in Rock. But maybe I’m wrong.

Spectacular analysis, illustrating values all fans agree upon and tying them to the market, instead of cherry-picking bands and gatekeeping on taste. However, star power seems to be the most important cause; fans are stuck in the past because there are no adequate replacements, and they were equally conflicted about the mainstream when rock was a staple.

I think there's 2 problems with new big names entering. 1, it's all about nostalgia. And 2. Speaking in general terms the rock people see to be in the crowd where they don't really respect people younger then them. Think about it, if the greatest band to ever exist emerged tomorrow but they were 18-20 they would get no attention from the 30+ rock crowd.

Good call on the revival stuff, i get a twinge of nostalgia but then quickly remember how *insert scene* scene came and went. A good example was the easy core pop punk revival of the early 2010's that he covers in another video. I was in high school for the first big pop punk explosion late 90s so the second wave didnt mean anything to me, even though there were some great pop punk and mid west emo that came out of that.
