WHY DID ROCK STOP BEING FUN?? (MGK was right!)

- MGK was right: rock stopped being fun! In this video I talk about exactly what happened:
* The 90s, when grunge bands like Nirvana and Alice In Chains showed up and Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg took over rap
* How 90s movies like Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers and The Matrix played a role
* The 2000s, when artists like Buckcherry, The Strokes, The White Stripes, Fall Out Boy and Paramore kept fun alive in rock
* The 2010s, when EDM DJs like Skrillex, Steve Aoki and Zedd became the new rockstars
* MGK's rant about "comfortable shoes" in an interview, and why Rubi Rose is a lot more interesting than djent

yo bro when them shirts coming in Pink yo?
Nah i didn’t forget anything, my videos aren’t intended to be lists of bands, you know?
We all try to forget Incubus.
Yo where can I get that shirt you're wearing fam?
@@ThePunkRockMBA you seriously need to do one video where you mention EVERY band that is an example of x. The entire video grinds to a halt, and you just name bands for 20 mins.
Caption on screen the whole time: you people made me do this.
Not only does rock need to be fun again, it also needs to become more rebellious and controversial again.
That’s true in a way, However 90% of GenZ’s need fun stuffs..
In the world of entertainment R&R is the closest thing to reality...In today*s digital world oeople choose "blue pills" over " red pills"..I miss those days where musicians are brutally frank and raw..
it can't be forced though
The only 2 controversial figures in rock today (and I say this with extreme sadness) are Ted Nugent and Trapt.
YES. The rebellion is gone.
I think part of rock’s decline is the elitist and unwelcoming attitude of fans.
STG!!
exactly
Anthony Fantano lol
The punk and metal scenes are rife with gatekeepers and elitists its bull. Shit...punk fans even call John Lyndon a fake punk even though he defined what punks were and was born in the roots of it all, smh. Punks about doing it for yourself and staying true and being honest to you and what your believe yet so many are called fakes for having literally their own views
Zendaya appeared on Tik Tok wearing a Metallica shirt and some people called her out as probably not even knowing any of their songs. The knee jerk reaction was crazy. Especially when it turns out she can actually play several Metallica songs on guitar.
"Can you imagine Axl Rose getting butthurt over these comments?" Yes. I can absolute see that lol
I'm a huge Gn'R fan, and even I thought this, absolutely- have you seen anything about Axl? He's often, the worst
You think Axle cares? If you were a GNR fan you wouldn't assume things about Rose. He was the best frontman in rock since Jim Morrison.
@@daveshank1921 I’m a massive Slash and GNR fan. But sometimes you gotta dish out the tough love 😂 he’s gotten way better since the mid 2000’s tho
That may be a poor example. Axl Rose gets butthurt over everything. I could see him throwing a chair through a window if his toaster burnt his toast.
Key Difference: Axl Rose knows how to be a marketable frontman and entertain people. He was the MGK of his time. A total douchebag that constantly beefed with others (Spin magazine anyone?) but was so incredibly entertaining that he was able to build a massive fanbase despite the antics. He wore the crazy, uncomfortable shoes MGK was advocating for. Not the McDonald's Employee New Balances rock bands wear today.

I will simplify it: Rockstars stopped being people you would look up to. They stopped being the pinnacle of the cool guy. Long story short: Rockstars stopped being rockstars
They're all stoic, wannabe professional businessmen.
It's no longer about jumping around n partying.
Rockstars were never people to look up to they were Rockstars f'ing willing & wanting groupies and doing lots of drugs.
@@GaughanGirl77 well... I understand what you're saying, but Rockstars do put a lot of work and commitment in their art, and they are people that believe in themselves. Drugs were a pretty negative aspect, but they were nonetheless very successful and popular people in general
@@Originalexbrou my point is that being popular says nothing about whether or not you should be looked up to.
@@Originalexbrou also the perception of drugs being 100% bad is pretty outdated imo... what type of drug? What side effects? How often? Is this a natural plant or a pharmaceutical concoction? Etc?
Grunge was the start of not being fun, everything went dark and depressing. It never really fully recovered. But there is a lot of fun rock out there. You just got to dig a little harder to find it
I think that is why Ska and Skate Punk stood out at that time. It was funner, those bands where having festivals.

Rock is still fun - what has happened is that the industry has changed how music is delivered. With music now being streamed, listeners can choose to listen to specific songs instead of whole albums. Artists are more likely to release singles on a steady flow so they can remain relevant in the social media space. Rock doesn’t focus on Instagram posts. Also - a key element of rock is the underground roots with the bars and pubs that harvest new bands coming through, a lot of these have closed down and also the record company’s that sign them. It is easier now to stay at homemix a track on my laptop and release online, than finding a group of dedicated likeminded musicians in my local area to practice together and developing original content overtime. Most of the successful bands in the 90s were playing for 5+ years before they had success. It’s all about the now and relevant for the follows and the ‘likes’. The generation of instant success.

Wow. I never thought about rock losing it’s hype due to lack of fun. I couldn’t agree more. Awesome video man!
Hey anabolic aliens! big fan. Keep the good work!
holy shit man, you're here! Love your channel man!
I think he's off here - it's not 'fun', it's exciting, it's depth. The Beatles were fun, then they got dark when they were most vital. The Rolling Stones were dark. There was nothing really 'fun' about The Doors, Pink Floyd, Zep, Hendrix, or really most any band from the 60s that was relevant. GnR became huge because they were a scary counterpoint to all the 'fun' throwaway strip bands. There was nothing fun about the Seattle bands. Even Sublime, being such a party band, had a really dark undercurrent to them. The Strokes were the last true rock band, tapping us back into something great when everything had gone nu-metal... they were certainly exciting and not fun, but they fizzled out. The only 'fun' rock band that had any real cultural impact is Van Halen because they were so freakin' amazing. MGK seems like a cool dude, but his attempt at rock is lame and boring... it's like even more watered down Blink, which is quite the accomplishment.
wow i used to watch your videos in like fifth grade this is weird
@@brandall101 People don't want to listen to Greta Van Fleet though and that's what this video is railing against. We've been hung up on this idea that Dad Rock (Rock version of 90's Boom Bap like Nas) is the only true version of the genre when there's a lot more fun artists to listen to. I'd much rather listen to GNR, Metallica, Blink, early Linkin Park, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Queen, and Pearl Jam than some boring, depressing crap like the Eagles or Zeppelin (great bands but I wouldn't put them on at a party).
I blame U2 and that time they forced us all to have their album on itunes

MGK and Post Malone have both showed us in the past year that they have tremendous passion and skill for punk rock music, but they both made their fortunes making the music that was popular. Now that they have money in the bank and a name for themselves, maybe they will help contribute to the rock revival.

@Michael Sprague See, I’m a musician (I’ve been playing guitar and bass for 12 years) and my thought process was different. When I was 16, I found punk rock and ska music and loved it and still do. It was really frustrating for me to have this music I thought was cool and amazing be ignored by the mainstream. I liked it. I wanted everyone else to like it too. And I started resenting top 40 radio music for that reason.

Seriously, after this pandemic and the madhouse that was the late 2010s, we *NEED* good time songs!
I’d happily welcome back fun rock. We need more of it. But these days I’ve grown to appreciate some downtime as well. Was at a get together with some friends awhile back, I hadn’t been out for awhile and it was loud at first, but then someone came in and we got chatting about Deftones and he put some of it on and the room got more chill. I like the fun, but in moderation. I can appreciate music that sets a mood just as well as I can appreciate something a little more uplifting and exciting and playful. I’ve been pretty deaf to this passed decade though, sadly. I’ve been too busy discovering older songs I hadn’t heard before and just being a shut in for most of my 20s. Maybe I should make the 2020s my 20s, now that I’m in my mid 30s, lol.

MGK was always a fun rapper too, so him entering the rock scene was a natural transition for him.
But yeah, music in general has been pretty moody for a while; it seems like the turning point was Lorde's "Royals" in 2013; all of the grandiose poppy songs that song was calling out started to fade away, and everyone started chasing that sound, including rock. And it did noooooot benefit that scene at all.
So just like how we had to import BTS to get pop to cheer itself up, personally I've been heading overseas to J-Rock to find bands that are ready to throw down.

You know what's fun? Your channel. Keep it up, man.
Ya know, I'd been trying to put my finger on exactly what's been up with the absence of rock music in the mainstream for a while now, and you hit the nail right on the head. It's not fun anymore. When I think about my favorite rock music from when I was coming up (so mostly late 90s and 00s bands), almost all of it was somewhat (if not very) danceable. Even the harder stuff made me wanna jump around the room. And even a lot of the really sad or serious tunes were often very melodic and even waltzy. Like if I really surrender myself to the music, I'll find myself swaying along. A lot of newer rock music doesn't do that for me. Sure it'll get some light headbangin from me, and seems to still make people want to mosh (I've never been one for moshing being a very petite woman who's just personally not a fan of getting crushed by dudes 2-3x my weight lol). But it often leaves me feeling more angry and energetically uptight than happy. Hell, even musically GOOD bands that were mostly just for dumb fun like RHCP get made fun of in today's culture like having a little funk and silliness in rock music is a bad thing...as if only metal and metalcore still count as real rock.
Also the rock music videos used to be SO entertaining to watch, and were the reason I got excited to wake up early in the morning so I could watch MTV and Vh1 before school. It seems like it's only the pop and hip hop artists nowadays that seem to care about making music videos that are actually fun and entertaining enough to have that viral power to reach across the algorithms to people who wouldn't otherwise go looking for them.
Anyway, that's just my 2 cents as someone who has very eclectic taste in music across any genre (though "alternative" would probably be the umbrella term I'd use to describe the music culture I came up in as a teen), and is also weirdly interested in pop culture trends, even those I don't necessarily participate in, just because I see it as a form of modern art history...what's popular often mirrors what's important to the youth of a given generation. So I suppose we could say that the kids these days simply don't currently share the values of rock culture 🤷🏽♀️ I mean, is it just a coincidence that with the rise of social media came the fall of rock in the mainstream, and the rise of a genre with a culture that largely includes braggadocio and beef (think Instagram, Twitter and TikTok culture) 🤔
Now I'm just rambling, but thanks for an insightful video that gave me some food for thought.
It's funny, cause hip-hop's problem was the exact opposite. They were so concerned with crossing over that the genre arguably stopped being hip-hop. To be fair the tighter restrictions on sampling didn't help either.
now this would make for an interesting video
@@asciicatface indeed
@@asciicatface it would make a great companion piece video imo. The problem with hip-hop in the 2000's was a combination of censorship by media outlets, and greed on the part of the hip-hop industry. By the mid 00's almost all mainstream rap music was club anthems. And it never recovered imo.
@@Tishauna7 Soundcloud rap, especially the aggressive varieties like punk rap and trap metal, tend to flip the club friendly vibe on its head by craving mosh pits and underground shows in (of all places) Eastern Europe, but it's definitely not mainstream yet. Eventually, there will be a rap equivalent to Linkin Park that popularizes screaming to the masses.

A well done breakdown, Finn. Pretty much hits the nail on the head.
Would honestly love to hear moar on your distain for EDM. I'm 29, & Bands like Attack Attack & early Asking Alexandria paved the roadway to electronic music for a lot of us because there are so many similarities between the two genres (build/drop song arrangement, production techniques, & so on). Feels like the 'fun' element of rock was syphoned in to Electronic music around 2012-13. We noticed that was happening & followed the thing we loved - fun. Which lead to EDM for many of us.
Remember back in the days where Every Single movie featuring characters between the age of 16-30 had lots of rock songs on their OST for party scenes, chase scenes or fight scenes?
Yup, those days are gone and that says a lot about the state of the genre in the present :(

@@an_38kitkashyap That's incredibly reductionist and simplistic. Sure, if you want to talk in large platitudes, you can make whatever broad generalization you want. That doesn't change that the content of the video is flawed because it's all based off of a shitty leading question, AKA the title of the video.
Finn always gives me Paul Ryan-stupidly-saying-"my favorite band is Rage Against the Machine" vibes due to his insistence that the only way music can be "good" is if it is profitable to media companies. That's the only consistent metric he seems to keep across his entire video catalog, from what I can tell.
I could be wrong, but he always seems to pick a position and then try to cherry pick data to support the original statement as opposed to asking a question and then stating what he learned.
@@davidmceldowney6827 Cherry picking is exactly right.
He argues the 90s were darker than the 80s and uses the example of Pulp Fiction (which I wouldn't exactly describe as dark). Well that same year Forrest Gump was also released. It was massive at the box office, won Best Picture and is about as light as movies come.
It's worth noting the cultural phenomenon that is Friends debuted on TV in '94 (remember the Rachel haircut?) and dominated for the rest of the decade (alongside Seinfeld for a few years) and the early noughties, a show that's as cheesy as anything the 80s produced.
He uses Back to the Future to illustrate how light the 80s are compared to the 90s, but if you were put Pulp Fiction next to Platoon which came out the year after BTTF his argument continues to fall apart. Platoon was undoubtedly a dark film, a smash hit with audiences and unlike BTTF won Best Picture.
By cherry picking you could just as easily make the argument the 80s were darker than the 90s.
@@vampirewilde also Terminator, Blade Runner, The Shining, Scarface. All of them goofy, lighthearted, fun films from the 80s, right?
This totally makes sense. My favorite music is Rap, pop, electronic music from late2000s-early2010s. That was when all of those genres we about Partying and having a good time
We need a combination of both

Coming from the UK where grime and pop music is usually what comes on the radio, i've found interestingly one band that is played at every party I've been to: The Arctic Monkeys. The culture shift they caused over here was immense and can still be felt years later as most people aged 16 to 30 will tell you. Not only did they make super catchy tunes that you can dance to but their lyrical content is incredibly relatable for teens coming of age. Whether you like rap or pop or edm most younger people in the UK will get down to 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'. Unfortunately AM spawned thousands of copycat indie/rock bands that have saturated the genre so it's hard to find good new rock for a lot of people.
I would argue that their sound is reminiscent of 60's rock. I feel like everything is recycled, and young people now are like hippies. There's nothing wrong with that (I mean no disrespect), but it shows how the pendulum swings between energies.
@@paulmcgrath6118 i do distinctly remember their song knock a door run, which has a pretty hendrix feel imo. Its one of my favorites of their earlier stuff. One of the things i enjoy about arctic monkeys is every album has a unique sound too, they kept experimenting with every album.
Great video! I am watching it one year later! I agree Rock needs to be fun again!
I’m sitting in my corner listening to poison and buckcherry. Loved this video
"If I can't dance to it, it's not my revolution.”

That's so true. Rebellious music still need to be fun to hit home!
311 is basically the taco bell of music. Everybody likes to pretend that they're above it, but we all know that you can't go wrong with a crunch wrap supreme, especially when psychoactive substances are involved.
Taco bell makes me shit my brains out after.
311 is fucking badass
I always thought they were a Chalupa
As someone from Omaha. Fuck 311
311 is cool, Taco Bell is trash. I understand your analogy but it's false.
This is outstanding man. You’re totally right and idky I never thought of it before lol. I’m 40 on 8/29 so the mid 90s was my coming of age years and that shit was epic, literally nothing has compared to that time since…I didn’t even notice rock became dark and so did my own creativity. That’s fuckin scary imo. Thanks for your take here man for real. I’m a new sub and look forward to hearing more from you.
*EDIT* I just checked when Alexisonfire first broke outside the local scene here because somehow I have them saved in the 90s section of my brain and I’m stunned it was 2003 lol. Maybe I’m just a bitter elderly who labels everything as shit unless I think it was 90s lmao. This video was therapy it seems
Thank you for the vid! It’s the reason I look for music in new places, and styles. Heck, Jerry Reed singing about the man who invented coin (vending) machines. Yeah it’s old, yeah it’s country, gut it’s a fun song. I’m not much for rap, but miss Will Smith, and DJ Jazzy Jeff rapping about summertime. Now it is who does the best covers for me. Give me a sad clown, and a jukebox, if you get the references.
in the wise words of Adam Neely, "Repetition legitimizes" - but honestly you didn't NEED to repeat that "people like fun" because honestly that's EXACTLY the point. Fantastic outlook on the state of rock as usual. I didn't get into rock as a teen to vent my frustrations with a system of conformity. At least not on the surface. I got into it because it was loud, rambunctious, creative, and dammit, it was fun. I miss that side of rock music.
Repetition legitimizes
All of the “rock and roll needs to be fun again” can be traced back to the explosion of Beatlemania. The four from Liverpool’s craft and presence attended to the emotional needs of hormonal baby boomers who grew in what was a war-razed continent/baby boomers who saw a young President of the United States of America whom they sort of identified get shot in the head on live television.
I feel that around 2023-2025 when the pandemic is receding catchy 2000s style pop rock will take the world by storm again.
By the way, YOU CAN write fun sounding songs about sad and dark subject matter if you know how to.
A big example would be "Semi-charmed life" by Third Eye Blind.
Shit, the Beautiful People was a fun song. Once Manson stopped having fun, his music started to suck.
I would argue that the main reason rock songs became boring is because the only bands creating rock songs in 2013 were guys who hadn't been teenagers since 1998 and the only things they had going on in their lives to sing about were divorce and raising kids alone. No new, young bands picked up the torch for Blink 182, Sum 41, Green Day, All Time Low, and Paramore because those new singers chose to become rappers or DJs instead. Consequently, there was no one to sing about teen angst and love anymore.
Amazing video! It makes a lot of sense! And the fact that MGK and other young artists are bringing pop punk back makes me so happy, they are really doing a great job
Thank you!
I’m now eagerly waiting for Andrew W.K. to pop off and come save rock music. He bleeds fun. He may not be the hero we want but damn it, he may be the hero we need.
Let’s get a party started!
I believe he will. Check his socials....something's brewing!
And no, rock won’t be saved from a dinosaur he’s from the early 2000’s
He has to be new young and appealing. Look up jxdn

axl rose would beat someone over a joke like that, bet.
Axl could give a fuck less he is a millionaire done you fucks are not 😂

Amazing video man. Can’t help but you notice you left out all the indie bands of the 2010s silver sun pickups, Matt and Kim, black keys, lumineers, tame impala, Mumford, cage the elephant, arcade fire, monsters and men etc. I’m 32 grew up on grunge/90s pop rock then moved on to pop punk/emo as the years went on and thought the 2010s indie scene was all of a lot of our natural progression rock wise. Overall I think you hit everything pretty well on the head keep up the great content.
I think the massive gatekeeping really didn't help either. I enjoy so much of the music you spoke about (and did growing up) but I don't obsess over names, artists, what guitar they used on that one set they had in Denver, CO in 2009 and so people get on me sometimes about not "really liking the music". That stuff has never made sense to me. I don't even know the name of the last movie I saw or enjoyed and I can still tell you I enjoyed it!
If someone is wearing a band shirt, they don't have to list off their top 20 fav songs and name the full legal names of all the band members to wear it. FFS
Yeah I feel you, in 2000 when I was 14 I went to small (200pl) Sick of it all gig in Liverpool (UK). Me and my mate went straight from school, so I decided to wear my Fear Factory (favourite band) t-shirt under my school uniform. The whole day at school people were saying you're gonna get beat up, you're gonne get shanked. But at the gig all the Old crust punks were so nice to me and we all got up on stage and sang along. No gatekeeping there. Good times. I hate being old.
YUUUUUP
Yeah that is the worst thing that can ever happening in music
Gatekeeping is obsessing over names and artists NOT over what guitar they had. I'm a musician and I am legitimately interested in what drumsets, guitars, and amps they all had. For crying out loud, I had to look some of this stuff up for my music class. Don't confuse talent and gatekeeping. When he mentioned guitar nerding, he meant nerds like me are what's left of the scene because rock isn't mainstream anymore. So no, people like me didn't kill it. People stopped going after fun in rock and just started gatekeeping genres and artists to seem edgy. Nerds like me only go after the musical aspect
@@simonriley7049 I think being accepted for liking what you like and not having to explain yourself is what this is all about tbh. Love geeking out about gear! Having passion for your own interests is awesome. Judging others for not having the same depth of understanding and deeming them a “fake fan” for not having that knowledge contributes to gatekeeping. It sounds like you don’t gatekeep around this-thank you. But I think some people do, and it sucks.
This was a brilliant rundown my brother. Really enjoyed hearing your take on all this 🤘
I know this is way to late to be involved in this conversation but something that I thought really jived with the whole theme of this video, especially the part about fun music videos is that Polyphia is fusing trap and hip hop with rock and prog metal and using fun videos (like look but don't touch) and just are funny in interviews and the guys (especially Tim) get current fashion. Now I know this math rock stuff isn't musically party music but I definitely think that bringing that fun aspect to their performances and stuff makes them more palatable to a wider audience.
Maybe rock is following the historical trajectory of jazz in it's relationship to popular music.
Hot take: music is no longer counter cultural, memes are the counter culture now.
soo true. I accept this explanation
damn, nailed it.
Nah, memes are mainstream culture. besides the surrealist memes, they're part of our daily lives.
incelcore is counter culture
That's why meme "rock bands" like Death Grips and 100 gecs are the closest thing we've had to rock stars in rock in 10 years
I was always super stubborn about the whole “rock is dead thing” because I didn’t want the music I love to be swept under the rug or something like that. But honestly watching your videos over the last year or so has educated me a lot on what music is popular and why. It’s also made me expand my music taste a lot! I love the classic stuff, but I am also really excited to see what the future has to offer. The things that MGK, Yungblud, and Mod Sun are doing right now are super dope, and I love seeing them bring punk and that rock and roll attitude back into the mainstream.
who would have thought that underground rappers will save punk rock one day ^_^
@@her0ju4na yeah they are far from underground rap. Both Yung Blood and MGK are multi Million dollar artists. And wouldn't say that they are saving it, but at least trying to plug the hole in the ship. All that needs to happen now are more artists trying to help the out
@@dwightbvg i wasnt really thinking of mgk and yung blood, they are just the tip of the iceberg. rappers like lil peep started this trend and they came pretty much out of nowhere.
Yes dude. Just put my thoughts into words for me
They are the only ones that are bringing something new to rock, that it's not generic. I think that someday post malone will make a rock album too.
Yeah I never got people taking themselves too seriously. I started “screaming” at 13 and got better with time, but I literally did it to be silly and imitate the noises I was hearing. At some point when I had the technique down and could sound like a banshee or a demon, I started doing it to scare my friends and whatnot. At some point I had people dropping their jaws (at that time I was like 16 and I was the only one doing that, all my friends played guitar and drums) and started asking me to be in their band and telling me how cool it was...I was sitting there like “really? You want me to be in a band? I’m literally making stupid ass noises?” And that’s how I became a metal vocalist and one if my cousins who hung out with me a lot got heavily into metal because of it and became a shred master...no one wants him inna band though lmao the difference is, I’m still being goofy af and laugh at myself when I do vocals because I realize how ridiculous it is. When people ask if I’ll do vocals on some if their projects I’m just like “yeah, dude, give me the music and I’ll make it work, I just like jamming with other musician”. My cousin on the other hand....he’s on that elitist level and tries to control the whole creative process and dictate what “real metal” is. I’m flattered when very talented musicians come to me and ask me to work with them. I’m good at what I do but I’m far from fantastic. Idk I’m just grateful that I get to work with who are proficient and amazing with their instruments while I’m just changing mouth noises but they ask me and not other people in my area that I consider to be better than myself. But even still I dont take it seriously. I’m bouncing around and dancing to the music while doing my thing. But I dont work with people who ask me to do vocals then tell me how and what to do when they dont do vocals. Like I dont tell you how to play your drums, that’s not my area of expertise lol I’m okay with criticisms to make something better or different, but I’m only serious when there’s someone who doesn’t do vocals telling me what I need to be doing. Then do your own vocals if youre so smart...lmao Again, I dont take it too seriously, but at the same time, I’ve been doing this for over a decade and I know my body and how it works. I AM my instrument. Like YOU asked me to be here, let me do my thing and enjoy myself and the music.
Hey Finn. You mention "Military Wives" a lot in your vids. We call them "Dependas" or "Dependapotomous" as in "Dependents of a military husband or wife." JIC you ever wanna use it in your vids. Love your stuff man!
Fun is part of it, but being moved emotionally can also be really powerful and give a song staying power. I got into rock with emo and screamo (later metalcore), and I loved that the music told a story that made me feel something or see a new perspective.
Where’s Andrew WK in the conversation. He is literally the party guy.
That dude is a wanker. He played before a band I wanted to see at a festival a few years ago and he got booed off stage for not being able to even play any instruments because he was so wasted. People were throwing shit at him and he was throwing shit back. I was surprised he didn't try and fight everyone.
@@ThisIsDeth Sounds like a party guy rock start to me? A lot of artists have those moments. I think MGK is the biggest try hard 'wanker' around, and there are plenty of stories about him to back that up. Regardless I agree with his comments about rock not being fun anymore. The only difference between muscians like Andrew WK and MGK, is that the latter has a significantly bigger mainstream platform

This, my friends, is why I like Eskimo Callboy. Sure it’s metalcore, but man it’s fun. Sure they have some serious songs, but for the most part they’re all about having fun. What I'll never understand is why rock fans got MAD when MGK went on his rant about comfy shoes and rockstars. I think there are a lot of rock fans are secretly hoping that rock stays out of the mainstream because they want to keep this "I'm not like other girls" mentality. It's cringy as hell and it makes you wonder if a lot of rock fans actually like the genre or if they SAY they like it because it makes them seem "different."
Thank you for putting my thoughts in to text. Nerds ruined rock. Rock was best when the musicians were anarchists, and now they’re a hoard of angry redditors who need to shower more.
@@brendanjames2687 dude for REAL!
I would say it is more an addiction than wanting to be different. A great, tasty riff and a well crafted solo is not being outshined by thoughts of "ooh, this is different, and I am so cool". Most people who appreciate that, are being completely consumed by the music and really in a different place, just like a good high. Keeping rock out of mainstream is keeping it fresh and not part of a machine. Most non rock listeners can actually find the music too dark, and poo poo at the sound of cymbals and electric guitars. The non listeners are the prudes, trying to play a psychological trick by basically saying it's not what they want, it's not like welcome to the jungle and sweet child o mine (great songs), well some rock and metal will become very popular, but people can't handle loud music these days unless all the dBs are in the bass and sub bass region, which makes their butts jiggle. A lot of people don't even wanna listen to old rock and metal, so that argument fails that it's the musician's fault or the fans' fault entirely. Most people don't have the taste for it
@@nubinshred what the hell is keeping it fresh thing?
and people do listen to loud music, that's what EDM is for, and not all rock or metal is loud anyway.
really pretentious gatekeepers are the biggest problem with rock and metal nowadays
@@ayhamkimo4488 EDM is very very bass oriented, which aligns pretty well with what I wrote above. Also, I do like electronic music, so it was not a diss really. There are pretentious gatekeepers sure, but they are kind of a small % if you ask me, and everyone thinks they’re douchey and self absorbed. I honestly feel most casual listeners (people who are not obsessed with music and never were yet consume it frequently, to set a vibe) don’t have the taste for modern rock/metal. Imo music today shouldn’t try to copy the 80s music metaculture as that would be unoriginal and mostly a parody. I’m sorry if someone acted as a gatekeeper to you, screw that attitude. Keeping it fresh means, it is not beholden to follow a pattern, again the originality argument. Intra genre there are a lot of unintentional influencing of musical styles anyway, but I’m glad whatever musicians are putting out, it’s more of an expression of what they want rather than a record label telling them to make things more upbeat, when it’s not the band’s vibe
wow that is such a great point! i never saw the situation that way, but now i 100% agree!
