I rode the 20th Century Limited to Chicago as a 14 year old boy in 1962. I remember it's beautiful dining car and its famous blueberry pancakes. It was a special trip.
Hearing the whistles I really like number 2 . Just a gorgeous set! You can keep the journey of Timmy and any crew talk. The engine sounds are good enough for me.
I’m gonna go with Whistle #2! That deep tone is a sound we don’t usually hear, makes this set unique, and MAN DOES IT SOUND COOL!!!! Awesome review Chris!
Great Review! I love The Dreyfuss Hudson, And The Entire Set! This is something Everybody Has Been Waiting On. (Also Love The New Intro) I'm Team New York Central
BEAUTIFUL!!! What an awesome run of toy train thoroughbreds! My fave would be the NYC over the Pennsy and as for the Dreyfuss’s whistle, I’m kind of liking the second one.
Thanks for the train run of this phenomenal train set, Chris. It's quite overwhelming! As for favourite horn sounds, I pick #2 because of the deep tone. Very distinct. Dreyfuss was a very forward looking designer. Too bad none of locomotives survives.
Excellent video my friend! So glad Lionel finally brought this icon back! Personally the color in person is amazing and makes those drive wheels pop! Team NYC all the way!
Number 3 is my favorite whistle, but they’re all outstanding. I do think the set is too light a shade of grey. There are color photos of the 1938 Century and the prototype was closer to the MTH version. But still a gorgeous set. You have a fantastic layout to run it on, Chris!
That is a gorgeous set Chris! I’ve been hearing some mixed reactions for the paint job that they went with. But honestly. That doesn’t bother me at all. Plus nobody really knows what color of gray that they used for the real Dreyfus Hudson. Rumors suggests that the color was somewhere in the middle between light and dark. Also the second whistle on the train has to be my favorite. I’m always Team NYC all the way. Great work on the Review Man!
The detail on this engine is vision level. Its a stunning set. I have the full set as well and you cant help but smile when you see it. And for those who are bothered by the paint, I’m sure lionel will do future runs. Great video Chris, keep up the good work👍🏼
I'm really digging the 2nd whistle. My Daylight has that same whistle actually. Such an amazing train. 15 years (2008 - 2023) of standing by and the signal finally shows green! This thing is like the Buzz Lightyear of Lionel in terms of how some shops are yet to order enough engines to meet demand. And the competition is fierce. This year, Lionel released the newest gen Vision Line Big Boy and the SRC/GW 90, but that speedy little streamliner just kicked all their tenders! I wonder how this will look in Polar Express colors-- OH WAIT.
Great video as always! NYC actually went to build a line to compete directly with the PRR in Pa. I forget what happened exactly, but it went on to become the PA Turnpike. I'm going go with whistle #2.
Great video and review Chris! I also love the Dreyfuss; it’s simply iconic! I appreciate the 20th Century Limited history you shared. Wish I was alive when this ran the Water Level Route through Rochester, where I live. I’m picking the deeper tone of whistle #2. And the passenger cars, like the engine, are gorgeous! Thanks again for another awesome, entertaining video! Keep up the great work. PS If you can, would you suggest Lionel produce a Dreyfuss for American Flyer modelers?,
Thanks Mike! I do not have any more pull or influence on Lionel than anyone else so feel free to send them an email. You never know what they might make! Happy Holidays.
What a beautiful trainset. I go for whistle #2 but really, #1 and #3 are also just totally fantastic !! And I'm in team NYC ... but that can change every second because the PRR T1 is also so amazing ... oh my. All those choices. This video makes me really want to build a huge double-track oval layout so I can set up a train race like that! 😃
Chris I’m sorry I must delete you from my UA-cam channel to watch!!! You are getting me JEALOUS!! You make me cry I want them all. I am looking for a Good Passenger Train for my military collection. New York Central has my heart because I’m from Brooklyn. You done a GREAT JOB. Love watching your VIDEOS. Please don’t buy the New Lionel Passenger Cars Army Set at TRAINWORLD I can’t afford them yet MERRY CHRISTMAS 😂
Hi Chris! This was a wonderful video of one of my favorite locomotives, the J3a Hudson by itself is a beautiful and iconic locomotive, but, the Dreyfus takes the cake for me. These are beautiful models, I agree, the Lionel Legacy version paint looks a little light to me but it's a gorgeous locomotive nonetheless. All the whistles are great but I like number 1 for this locomotive. Thanks Chris!
Great action with gorgeous trains. I especially enjoyed the vibrant color you threw in with the Pacemaker Mohawk (?) and matching freight set. Really fun video, and BTW, I prefer whistle #2.
I am team Pennsy but I model PRR, NYC, and B&O in the Pittsburgh Division. Glad I don't have to deal with different DCC protocols in HO scale. Option 1 is most prototypical but it's up to you. Very nice model!
Despite being an N gauge guy, I always enjoy watching your videos. (maybe I'm actually an O gauge guy at heart) For reference, Hudson and 8 passenger cars are 60" total length in N scale.
Hey RPB, I am planning on getting an ho scale 20th century limited set soon, do you think I should get it even though I have an FEF-3, a big boy, am GE C45AH, and a 4449 along with 9 southern Pacific and 13 union Pacific passenger cars and 26 freight cars?
I’ll take whistle 2 for 200 million subscribers, please. My observation on the race failure: they made it behave Prototypically. These Hudsons are not great starters.
Watching the T1 And the 20th century limited racing around I felt like I was in the 1930’s I need shot of whiskey and a cigar what beauties I think I like the second whistle where do you keep all your train boxes 📦 your layout is is very clean underneath mine is is packed full 👏😃🚂
The fact that Lionel went with a light shade of gray is problematic to someone like me who did not want to buy 21" passenger cars and wanted to use my older Lionel or MTH 18" cars, with the prototypically correct gray color, with the new Legacy Dreyfuss. That said, I considered adding the 21" car set to my order. Then, the fact that the stripes on the tender don't match the stripes on the passenger cars was the deal breaker. But, standing alone the set looks very nice, but at these prices I didn't want to take the chance that Lionel would reissue the set in a future catalog with the correct colors and striping.
I"m with ya - the Dreyfus Hudson is my fav too....with the GG-1 coming in second. Love streamline.....kinda like the darker tone though...but I"m like you.....I'd own BOTH too. Like the wheels on the lighter tone more....
The NYC and PRR had parallel track where their trains would 'race' unofficially. I own both Dreyfus and PRR t-1 locos....IF I had to pick.....T-1 wins even if I have 3 dreyfus locos!! Thanks
I can't say if there was ever a race between a Dreyfuss Hudson and a Pannsy T1, but the 20th Century Limited and the Broadway Limited frequently DID race out of Chicago's Englewood station! Both the NYC and the PRR stopped t Englewood and their tracks paralleled each other for a number of miles until finally the NYC swung north and the PRR swung south. Often wnough both the Century and the Braodway left Englewood at the same time and it nearly always lead to an improptu race, to the delight of the passengers. Now both 'roads absolutely denied the trains were racing and said train crews doing so would be disciplined. Which led to the following true story... An NYC offcial was riding the Century back to New York when sure enough the race ensued with the Broadway. The official motioned to the conductor: "Step this way sir!" "Yes sir!" "Conductor, are we racing the Broadway?" "Um, uh, 'cough,' er...." stammered the conductor. "I see." said the official. He took another look out the window, turned to the conductor and said... "Get word to the engineer, if he loses he's FIRED!" 🤣🤣🤣 Oh, by the way, whistle 2!
Please.....dispense with the "clown like" antics , let us enjoy the trains you have spent a fortune buying, or they subsidised by the manufacturers ? The "American Theatre" attitude detracts from the lovely models themselves. Our Hobby is enjoyable for the trains of our choice ....we don't need to be "sold" on what you have already bought. Thank you for running them for us.BUT.... Allow them to run in verbal silence!
Hello Chris First of all, Best wishes for 2024, I watched your show again with complete amazement You asked what sound belonged to the locomotive,I thought number 2 sounded nice Chris,Beautiful machines, It`s a shame you live so far away, Otherwise i would have i will come and view your track, But yes, I am coming home from my ride that i have done and then i will look for your Canal to relax and watch,Greetings From Henk Belgium border❤😀😉
I purchased the entire set and instead of using a steam locomotive ,I plan on using the Lionel E 7 diesel locomotive in the "Beauty Queen" paint scheme . I saw this in an illustration in the book "The Greatest Train In The World " which is about the New York Central 20Th Century Limited. I love the passenger cars ,but I wished that Lionel had put full skirts on all of the passenger cars as the prototype had. I do like and prefer the 1938 version of the train over the 1948 version ,but I like that version also. I am so sorry that I got back into the hobby so late that I missed out on purchasing Lionel's versions of the Pennsylvania railroad 1940's passenger trains .
I like the empire builder Hudson. This Hudson is no slouch either.I have a few nyc mohawks. But down here in the south. They are known as mountain type. And the railroad in my neck of the woods was called Seaboard Air Line later Seaboard Coast Line now CSX.Anyway I don't know of the Seaboard.ACL and Southern gets more attention thou.I have mostly freight and I run fast freight.Hey it's what I saw as a child.Schoil right next to the tracks.Like your videos.
Cosmetic diaster. The trucks are not supposed to be black. The underframe is not supposed to be black. The stanchions are not supposed to be black. And oddly enough, Lionel painted the cylinder covers in a dark grey. while the engine white/gray. Very strange.
It's a toss up between whistles 2 and 3. The Dreyfuss with the PT tender gives the locomotive a very different look. My 20th Century Limited coaches that I have are from MTH are the darker gray but that just gives me a reason to get the Lionel coaches or a MTH Dreyfuss hutson. Add them to the wishlist.
Contrary to popular opinion I like whistle number 3. It reminds me of number 614 during its runs out of Hoboken, appropriate for a high speed passenger service. If whistle 2 was a little more deeper I’d probably find that more favorable
All three whistle sound perfect for this engine, but if I was to run this engine personally on a layout I’ll probably stick with whistle number one 10:01
HI Chris this is a super video and really enjoyed watching it every part of it I think I'm gonna suggest it's the best pacing racing shot of 2 great passenger trains on any O scale layout I've ever seen I hope you get a chance to see this comment and I hope you get to do some more pacing racing shots all the tracks look great the upper 2 loops with the awesome looking bridge is super for that kind of a shot!. The 20th century Lionel set looks amazing I would've got it but I'm still in the process of getting the Missouri Pacific eagle set from Golden Gate depot Man they're just aren't enough great trains to buy are there LOL
im gonna go off the rails here, but its something id like to see. Compare the Lionel hudson, with a Hudson from a Ho guage, or even a n guage, witch one looks most realistic? By the way, "ice video here!
A big reason why there’s yes Niagara or Hudson’s is NYC’s president,Alfred Perlman ordered them to be scrapped because he thought that having one steam locomotive preserved would make his company look old fashioned and that the amount of passengers would decrease
Nice video. That train is gorgeous. Whistle #1 is the best and 3 is OK. #2 sounds a bit out of place, more at home on a big, articulated locomotive. My one complaint is the passenger talk. This was an all room train, no coach seats and the conductor didn't walk through the cars asking for tickets. Timmy would have been by a window no matter what compartment he was in. It would be good if Lionel would have dialog that matched the type of train that was running. Other than that, this is a great rendering of one of the best trains to ever grace the rails.
2 or 3 sounds the best. I wasn't even a thought back then, so I don't know the genuine pitch of the whistle. I don't care for the diesel engine startup sound coming from a steam locomotives or radio "squawk" chat from them either. The color isn't an issue, anyone can can "Wash" a transparent shade over lightly colored paint if they so choose to.
14:40 THERE WAY ON GODS GREEN EARTH THAT YOU JUST CASUALLY SAT THERE AND SHOWCASED A LOCOMOTIVE THAT EVERYONE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR IN THE FOREGROUND OF THIS SHOT!!!
the colors and striping are so far off its basically a fantasy scheme---really a complete failure--for a 3K set you should demand better----would have just as easy to get it right as wrong--a total lack of quality control and attention to basic details
I don’t know if you like the old o scale engines that were all 2-4-2s no matter what engine they were trying to replicate but a hobby shop out in a town called Highland on the Lake has a really old Commador Vanderbilt Hudson set that’s gotta be around the 40s or maybe older than that
Color of the engine should have been a little darker, and the trucks should have been painted dark grey instead of black. Broadway limited nailed it in HO scale.
How cute grown men obsessed with toy trains 😂 remind me of my gramps' huge H.O. layout when he died they just auctioned of all of his stuff no one wanted it!
Number 2 is my favorite as well. It's one of my favorite engines!
@@Tattooedtrainsthose JLC Big boy whistles give some nostalgia
I’m gonna go with Whistle #2! That deep tone is a sound we don’t usually hear, makes this set unique, and MAN DOES IT SOUND COOL!!!! Awesome review Chris!
Great Review! I love The Dreyfuss Hudson, And The Entire Set! This is something Everybody Has Been Waiting On. (Also Love The New Intro) I'm Team New York Central
There is a painting of this train at the Syracuse NY central station on next to the highway of what used to be the station docks
BEAUTIFUL!!! What an awesome run of toy train thoroughbreds! My fave would be the NYC over the Pennsy and as for the Dreyfuss’s whistle, I’m kind of liking the second one.
I’m going with whistle 2. This set looks absolutely GORGEOUS!! Merry Christmas to all model railroaders🎄🚂
I’d have to agree with you on that!
Merry Christmas to you too!
5:29 how dizzy we’re you?! 🤣🤣
Great video train fam!! 😎
I mean yea the gray on the Lionel Dreyfus is really loud but it at least matches with the rest of the train set
I like whistle number 3! I love Timmy. Sounds just like me as a kid. Timmy's entire story is amazing. Timmy, use your manners!
I wonder how many kids like him who remember the glory days of rail travel are still around? I'm betting some of them served in WW2 around that time.
Whistle 2, I just love deeper toned whistles, also the deeper whistle makes the engine sound more prominent like its the boss
I love your enthusiasm n Great smile. Gday from the Land Down Under Chris. What is RBP trains?? A trade name??
Number 3 is my favorite whistle, but they’re all outstanding. I do think the set is too light a shade of grey. There are color photos of the 1938 Century and the prototype was closer to the MTH version. But still a gorgeous set. You have a fantastic layout to run it on, Chris!

4:43 Same here. If I was a billionaire. I would build a replica of an NYC Hudson. Like the Commodore Vanderbilt.
I am definitely on the PRR team. I like whistle #2. Great looking train set for a NYC train.
The detail on this engine is vision level. Its a stunning set. I have the full set as well and you cant help but smile when you see it. And for those who are bothered by the paint, I’m sure lionel will do future runs. Great video Chris, keep up the good work👍🏼

The oval helps for these tests, haha!
Love the video
Dream on, dream on- in Britain several replica steam locomotives are either built or under construction - notably 60163 Tornado
Big question for you #RBPTrains What is the difference between 5454 and 5452? I'm trying to get one.
Chris I’m sorry I must delete you from my UA-cam channel to watch!!! You are getting me JEALOUS!! You make me cry I want them all. I am looking for a Good Passenger Train for my military collection. Whistle #2 suits the engine because I can imagine the engine having that whistle back in 1938.

Team NYC or Team PRR?
The answer is BOTH!
Well played!
Chris, we ordered and received the 5454 fantasy paint scheme. It is almost the shade of the photo 2 MTH. It is such a fantastic engine.
Awesomeness, that is all I will say
I am team Pennsy but I model PRR, NYC, and B&O in the Pittsburgh Division. Glad I don't have to deal with different DCC protocols in HO scale. Option 1 is most prototypical but it's up to you. Very nice model!
I think the 2nd one was the best. This engine just looks so powerful and the deeper whistle really does it justice. Amazing video Chris!
Lionel still can’t get there colors right.
I like#2
Despite being an N gauge guy, I always enjoy watching your videos. (maybe I'm actually an O gauge guy at heart) For reference, Hudson and 8 passenger cars are 60" total length in N scale.
I got confused I thought he was at a train museum in the thumbnail 😂😂😂
Thank you for the heart
#2 is the best - it sounds like the Southern Pacific Daylight Holiday Express!
I love the dialogues
i love the 20th Century Limited.

I’m team new york central
Imagine if this beautiful locomotive was still around if it wasnt scrapped ❤❤❤😢 and whistle number 2 really goes great for her in my opinion
#2. Keep up the great work!
The Dreyfuss is definitely one of my top favorite steam engine! It's whistle is so unique!
I’ll take whistle 2 for 200 million subscribers, please.
My observation on the race failure: they made it behave Prototypically. These Hudsons are not great starters.

Feel like you should do number 2 it. It has a more collected classic sound.😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Sorry just had the time to watch. But my favorite RR is NYC and will always be my favorite!
Question, RBP: Which whistle do YOU like, personally?
All three whistle sound perfect for this engine, but if I was to run this engine personally on a layout I’ll probably stick with whistle number one 10:01
Whistles 1 and 2 are originally from the JLC Big Boy.
Whistle 3 is from the Empire State Express (2015) - Suitable version!
HI Chris
this is a super video and really enjoyed watching it every part of it I think I'm gonna suggest it's the best pacing racing shot of 2 great passenger trains on any O scale layout I've ever seen I hope you get a chance to see this comment and I hope you get to do some more pacing racing shots all the tracks look great the upper 2 loops with the awesome looking bridge is super for that kind of a shot!.
The 20th century Lionel set looks amazing I would've got it but I'm still in the process of getting the Missouri Pacific eagle set from Golden Gate depot
Man they're just aren't enough great trains to buy are there LOL
im gonna go off the rails here, but its something id like to see. Compare the Lionel hudson, with a Hudson from a Ho guage, or even a n guage, witch one looks most realistic? By the way, "ice video here!
but over all i really love that train I WANT ONE SOOO BAD AAAAGH!!!😫🤣

I’m team New York Central %100 the Hudson just to cool to not be my favorite engine of all time

#2 has the best sounding whistle, not filmilar with what a real Hudson whistle would sound like in the wild
Now you need to find a scale Commodore Vanderbilt, The Mercury, and some NYC E or F units to expand "The Great Steel Fleet".
well actuly i just listend to sme of my faverite recordings on youtube and #2 is ththe most acurite sorry my mistake.
Beautiful set! and whistle #2
I remember 20th Century train being mentioned on a classic PBS T.V. show called Ghostwriter.
I think in the near future there going to rebuild the Dreyfus Hudson and the nyc Empire State express
Fan of both PRR and NYC my grandfather worked for NYC Railroad then Penn Central and Amtrak
Darrenbury Central Hi lovely layout. I think the second whistle is best. Just found your channel very good.❤

I don’t know if you like the old o scale engines that were all 2-4-2s no matter what engine they were trying to replicate but a hobby shop out in a town called Highland on the Lake has a really old Commador Vanderbilt Hudson set that’s gotta be around the 40s or maybe older than that
Team PRR… because a modernized T1 is being built. For real. You’ll be able to touch grass and watch it streak by!
Mrbeast move the hell over RBP is building us a Hudson you heard it here
Color of the engine should have been a little darker, and the trucks should have been painted dark grey instead of black. Broadway limited nailed it in HO scale.
If you are looking for an mth ps3 dreyfuss I know someone that has one for sale. Little to no run time on it. Primarily lived on a display shelf.
1 and 3 sound the most realistic to what it might’ve sounded like, but 2 just hits different… probably 3 honestly
It is a very Beautiful set and Engine maby it could've been maby little darker shade of Grey but it's still magnificent its very nice RPB
How cute grown men obsessed with toy trains 😂 remind me of my gramps' huge H.O. layout when he died they just auctioned of all of his stuff no one wanted it!
