This region was almost inaccessible 50 years ago, and the Rocky Mountain Trench where the Bush Forest Service Road is located remains one of the remotest major valleys, along 250 km long Kinbasket Lake Reservoir, in southern British Columbia today. Curiously, it was also one of the FIRST explored, in the early 1800's, by fur traders (a despicable industry) who crossed Canada's central Rocky Mountains very close to where this video was made for the first time. In following years, they actually followed the headwaters of the Columbia River from this very area 2000 km / 1200 miles downstream to Fort Astoria, near present day Portland, Oregon, USA. One of the oddities of Tsar Mountain is that some clever geographer put it on Imperial Oil (Exxon/Esso gas stations) free road maps of BC and Alberta in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, omitting many other better known mountains. 12001 foot Mount Clemenceau, named after the controversial World War One miltary man of France and the fourth highest peak in Canada's Rockies, is nearby.

In 1994 when 4 of us did Tsar Peak, the road was driveable to then-recent clearcuts on the east side of the mtn where we parked, bushwhacked to treeline and traversed around to the north side of the peak, where we camped. We ascended it from that north side, going easily along a rock ridge which joined the summit mass from the north side. It required leaving the rock ridge and descending onto glacier to gain the last way to the summit. I'll bet that part is much tougher now with 30 yrs of glacial recession. We roped for the glacier. Not something I'd consider soloing. Fabulous area, fabulous views.
I was there in the late 80s and took that route (Sullivan R. not Kinbasket R.) to Tsar. There was a tributary into the Sullivan River with a very deep slot canyon. Without that bridge the road became impassable. Ditto on the glaciation, not a place to solo.
Just seeing how beautiful it is out there if just fine with me. Doesn't matter if you make a summit or go for a little hike, thanks for making these videos!
