What makes very bad movies good, IMO, is that they are unique in some way. The bad choices they make are different from what you normally see. What makes good movies bad, is that they are bland and derivative. They are like everything you've already seen, change nothing, and add nothing, and make you feel nothing.

I think that's only because he bought all the equipment himself instead of leasing it like everyone else does. At least, that's how it's portrayed in "The Disaster Artist".
Not me. People being really loud and annoying. Yes it's entertaining because it's actually trying to be a legit drama and it's funny how bad it is. I think people that go to the screenings feel cool for doing so.
"Once" is the key word. A couple weeks ago, I attended a late night Portland screening of The Room" with Tommy Wiseau himself in attendance. The laughing/jeering/shout-along crowd (and Tommy) was absolutely hilarious.
The magic of "The Room" is that it's so INNOCENTLY bad. Tommy Wiseau was completely sincere in his efforts to make a legitimate dramatic film. All of the other actors are performing to the best of the amateurish abilities. The production was completely honest in its misguided efforts to build and advance drama and tension. It was just so perfectly off in all of its horrible decision making, like the video said, like a non-human trying to understand humans. It's also so fragile for that same reason. As soon as there's an ounce of awareness, of camp, satire or any other intention the whole concept and value of the film instantly evaporates. Then it's just an ordinary bad movie. It's why Tommy Wiseau can't ever make another film and why his later casting of the film as a "dark comedy" fell flat. He's now forever a caricature of his own creation.
Tommy Wiseau is a transdimensional alien, who sincerely tried to help humans by creating art. If he could mimick humans better, it would be a great film!
That is exactly what makes The Room a cult classic it is, but I would digress that it doesn't apply to all ''so bad it's good'' movies. For example, ''Thankskilling'' is absolutely aware that it's bad, and it's still very enjoyable and good.
One of the reasons bad movies are enjoyable is that they're great to pick apart and analyze, and you can really learn a lot about good films from watching them. Your typical Hollywood film is so seamless and polished that everything washes over you. You suspend your disbelief and sort of forget that a movie is the sum of a million parts/decisions/actions. But a bad movie jolts you out of that. As soon as you see a boom mike or realize that the actor's shirt has changed from red to green in the middle of the scene, you're reminded that a film is something a lot of people came together to make, and that people made certain (terrible) decisions making it. You start to wonder WHY they made a certain choice. Like, why does Tommy Wiseau have actors throw around a football for no reason in the middle of a movie? You start wondering if a decision was made because of ineptitude, lack of funds, time constraints, because the director was out of his mind because of a cocaine binge (which happened during one movie I worked on), etc. Also, thinking about why a movie fails can make you look critically at ones that are good. What makes a movie good? What makes one enjoyable? What makes dialogue work? What sounds dumb? The badness of movies like the room gives you a different perspective on moviemaking, and in a way, is sort of an education in how to make a good movie.
Very true. I was told once if you want to be an aspiring filmmaker or actor, watch bad movies/plays/TV and you'll learn a lot more from them than good ones. You'll learn how not to be bad.

Well rotten tomatoes is just a collection of multiple different reviews from different sources. So that 32% means that 32% of reviews of the room were positive.

"It is like a movie, made by an alien, who has never seen a movie, but has had movies thoroughly explained to him." THE MOST ACCURATE DESCRIPTION OF THIS MOVIE I'VE EVER HEARD, LMAO
what is even funnier is that johnny dubbed himself ....i mean he watched the movie then decided to IMPROVE what he saw by going into a recording booth and recording it ..and THIS is what he came out with.
Ya know, there's something special to entertaining oneself with abysmal pieces of art, so you do have a point. But I couldn't take up a condescending stance towards a film who actually managed to do what a (mainstream) flick's intention should always be: It entertained quite a lotta people. Now sure, there's also flicks that are meant to make you think, to educate you, or just simply to show you something unconventional. But even then, they still do entertain us, even if it's just a "side-effect". So yes, while The Room was undoubtedly a film with horrible acting, a terrible script, and a lead who has yet to prove to be an actual human, it certainly cannot be considered unsuccessful. (not financially speaking. Although I assume some money has been earned over time, so they might even be in the plus, someday)
I think I like these kind of bad movies because it's very reminiscent of your average school play. They somehow create a sense of community and you feel like these terrible terrible actors could be people you know. It kind of immerses you into this world but instead of some big name actor it's like your uncle walking out there and spouting some shitty lines. That's what makes these terrible movies beautiful.
Thadius Meyers I honestly never think of that, but reading your opinion made me. 😂 I'm going to think about my silly uncle or friend's awkward mom every time I watch shitty acting in movies and become more forgiving from now on, thanks. 😂
The Room is one of the most unique (and misogynist :/) films ever made, whether you consider it "the worst film ever made" or not. It happens to be my personal favourite, up there at least... it's like looking into the brain of what a man of another life and world (Tommy Wiseau) envisions the incredibly broken "American dream" to be, all in this immersive "school play"-esque community you perfectly describe.
Roshan, have you watched this scene, let alone the entire film? ua-cam.com/video/wOWCMuwZVVQ/v-deo.html All of them women (and characters) in the film are written solely *for*, and of course *from* the perspective of the perfect Tommy Wiseau (or Johnny, as portrayed in the film) I was surprised a few searches give one results regarding it, and watching the film should answer it for you unless you're desensitised to negative and stereotypical portrayals of women across the media. Breast cancer is a brief joke in the room. The movie is a joke, and I can admire it for all of its unintended, broken absurdity. "David Lynch couldn't make something that weird on purpose." www.wehuntedthemammoth.com/2012/04/26/tommy-wiseaus-the-room-an-unintentional-mra-classic/
I don't think you need to do an indepth analysis to know why people like to watch this movie. The plain and simple reason is that its just sooo bad that its funny.
I think it was because Tommy spent so much on it and believed it is the best ever. A lot of people who make bad movies know they’re bad and just release the movie straight to dvd. But Tommy asked Paramount to distribute this, paid for a premiere, made merchandise, and kept it onscreen. He didn’t just let it die. He marketed it for mainstream.
I think it is entertaining because it is consistently bad. from start to finish, the movie feels like all of the pauses, non verbal utterances and moments of silence in conversation have been cropped out.
The Room is nowhere near the worst. In any way. It has a semi-coherent story, it has decent lighting, okay camerawork, and the "actors" are some times seen moving their lips when they speak. The Room is bad enough to be good bad, and much better than bad bad movies.
Very true, and The Room might be one of the last of that "genre," because the cat's out of the bag. People have been making intentional "so bad it's good" movies for a while now - such as Snakes on a Plane. Also, because it came out before UA-cam, people laugh at its attempt to get exposure with serious money invested in equipment/marketing.
Yeah, some things are so bad they're good. While I've never read it, I think a good example of this is the Harry Poter fanfiction My Immortal. They didn't try to make it good, so it's not predictable, which makes it entertaining, although not traditional.
The first time I watched this movie I thought the flower shop scene was the weirdest part. After years of awkward interactions with others, as well as working retail, I get it.
@@shaf2317 yes, they filmed it with two cameras, used green screen for rooftop scenes whereas there actually real rooftop in the studio, and many unecessary expenses.
Because people watch movies to be entertained, and i laughed at this movie more than most comedies. The movie was a success, it got Tommy Wiseau famous and is still remembered to this day.
The Room comes under "best bad movie" rather than "worst movie ever" purely because it makes sense and it makes you laugh, worst movie ever is reserved for the almighty Neil Breen. Breen is the maddest of them all, more so than Tommy and Daddy Derek Savage combined.
The appeal of flat earth videos and other "conspiracy" videos fall into three ranges. (in no particular order) 1) Skepticism 2)Superficial originality (a type of intellectual and or creative lazyness that isn't consciously meta) 3)General Paranoia
Yeah, only now I'm noticing some very grating details, like the line "looking forward to the wee-e-e-e-ekend". This doesn't sound good at all. This is like a bipper from a co-worker you barely know trying to make it cool.
I saw rocky horror the first time with a live audience. I had no idea about anything other than the crowd was quite rowdy and weird. Never really ended up liking it, though I tried, because of that first impression of not caring what was going on. I saw the room by myself after midnight. I recognized how awful it was, but was able to enjoy it. Much easier transition when I saw it with the crazies. That was a fun experience.
I'm so grateful I saw Rocky Horror the first time in a generally normal viewing arrangement. It was an outdoor projection of a 16mm print on a University campus lawn, in 1975 or 76. I was able to enjoy the dialog and the songs without the intrusion of the audience. After acquiring familiarity of the movie, I once again saw it in a theater with an indoctrinated audience, so I understood the inside jokes. I would say it is always better to see a cult audience participation movie first without the audience so that you can develop your own unique reaction and opinion.
0:55 to 1:01 was the most brilliant 6 seconds of commentary in my lifetime. The spirit of Siskel & Ebert must have been with him, and thats saying a lot. Well said!
I think it's our schadenfreude kicking in high gear. From a cultural, artistic standpoint, we draw pleasure from watching something so wildly out of touch with cinematic language. It's a masterwork of how not to make a film, which oddly enough, makes it a really intriguing film to watch. Weird how that works. 🤔

what is even funnier is that johnny dubbed himself ....i mean he watched the movie then decided to IMPROVE what he saw by going into a recording booth and recording it ..and THIS is what he came out with.
The best example of, "It's so bad that it's actually good."
Still better than the emoji movie!
It even has better scores on rotten tomatoes and imbd!

Beep Boop, another Miku fan! How are you Brudda?

i like emoji movie, as an animated film for kids its pretty good...
"It's like a movie made by an alien"
But Tommy Wiseau is indeed an alien, I mean, his face melts when it's in contact with oxygen.
Plot twist: He purposely made it that bad just so more people would pay to watch it
I think you misspelled best in the title...

I think intelligent people like shitty movies because they just like laughing condescendingly at bad art.
Athena Battaglia true that
Of course. That's why "Mystery Science Theater 3000" did so well
1980s: We'll have flying cars in the 21st century
2017: We rewatch the Room 50 times telling ourselves it's cause we're intelligent
Umm not really.
“You’re my favourite customer” is just hilarious
I think I like these kind of bad movies because it's very reminiscent of your average school play. They somehow create a sense of community and you feel like these terrible terrible actors could be people you know. It kind of immerses you into this world but instead of some big name actor it's like your uncle walking out there and spouting some shitty lines. That's what makes these terrible movies beautiful.
Thadius Meyers
I honestly never think of that, but reading your opinion made me.
Roshan, have you watched this scene, let alone the entire film?
ua-cam.com/video/wOWCMuwZVVQ/v-deo.html
All of them women (and characters) in the film are written solely *for*, and of course *from* the perspective of the perfect Tommy Wiseau (or Johnny, as portrayed in the film)
I was surprised a few searches give one results regarding it, and watching the film should answer it for you unless you're desensitised to negative and stereotypical portrayals of women across the media. Breast cancer is a brief joke in the room. The movie is a joke, and I can admire it for all of its unintended, broken absurdity. "David Lynch couldn't make something that weird on purpose."

I like this movie because of how ridiculous it is
It was a long-term investment
Tommy earns 1m per year because of this movie
I don't think you need to do an indepth analysis to know why people like to watch this movie. The plain and simple reason is that its just sooo bad that its funny.
True, that's the only explanation needed lmao
I think it was because Tommy spent so much on it and believed it is the best ever. A lot of people who make bad movies know they’re bad and just release the movie straight to dvd. But Tommy asked Paramount to distribute this, paid for a premiere, made merchandise, and kept it onscreen. He didn’t just let it die. He marketed it for mainstream.
Banu T it's
Exactly! I've never laughed so hard at someone declaring she had breast cancer.
It's like the "Weird Russian Singer' and "Cowboy ahhhh" music videos.
Because it's so damn bad...its good. Truly one of my favorites because of its remarkable ineptitude.
brain drain I'm more hyped for the disaster artist then any other movie coming out this year lol
brain drain bingo
brain drain its better than sharknado
HOW DARE YOU INSULT THE ROOM??!

Can anyone explain to me why people hate this movie?
Vox:
“So bad that it’s good”
My brain:
Just call it funny for goodness sakes!
I think it is entertaining because it is consistently bad. from start to finish, the movie feels like all of the pauses, non verbal utterances and moments of silence in conversation have been cropped out.
nya the lack of continuity is my fav. like the mom having cancer. then when they just repeated the entire "sexy" scene
Lisa: "I want to live, live, live," well your career died, died, died
Lol
he has another movie coming out
People are interested in the 'best' & the 'worst'. Its the averages we don't care about ---Law of extremes
GradeA's Kid Idk man people still like Suivide Squaf.
The Room is nowhere near the worst. In any way.
It has a semi-coherent story, it has decent lighting, okay camerawork, and the "actors" are some times seen moving their lips when they speak.
The Room is bad enough to be good bad, and much better than bad bad movies.
Yep. The Room is actually somewhat coherent.
Birdemic, or Superbabies, on the other hand...
Conor M. That's exactly the reason I like the film. It's not aware of how bad it is
Conor M. Birdemic doesn't count, it was intentionally bad like Sharknado
That's a whole lot of words for "its just comically bad".
The answer is simple. It's so bad that it provides comedic value. It's like taking joy in making fun and looking down on a awkward high school nerd.
punk
punk
Well put.
The test came back positive - I definitely have breast cancer
Hey, don't worry about it.
Breast cancer is best cancer

The first time I watched this movie I thought the flower shop scene was the weirdest part. After years of awkward interactions with others, as well as working retail, I get it.
This movie shouldn't have cost more than like $20,000 to make. It looks like it was filmed by high school students
actually the budget was $6 million lol
There are exactly 3 too many zeros on your quote $20 is a much more reasonable figure.
The cocaine line item ran the budget up
Honestly the movies I have made at school are better than this and I filmed them on a phone.
@@shaf2317 yes, they filmed it with two cameras, used green screen for rooftop scenes whereas there actually real rooftop in the studio, and many unecessary expenses.
The real question is why it has a 32% on rotten tomatoes...that is too high

Lrp321 .123 that is true if it is the worst movie shouldn't it be at 0% *cough* *cough* iron fist *cough* *cough*

Because it's entertaining,no matter how much you hate it ,the movie is superfun to watch .
Because people watch movies to be entertained, and i laughed at this movie more than most comedies. The movie was a success, it got Tommy Wiseau famous and is still remembered to this day.
You just had to get Rebecca Black in there, didn't you?

My Saur transformation fits also in the category of trash movies. Although it's just a one minute clip. But 56 Million views speak for itself
The Room comes under "best bad movie" rather than "worst movie ever" purely because it makes sense and it makes you laugh, worst movie ever is reserved for the almighty Neil Breen. Breen is the maddest of them all, more so than Tommy and Daddy Derek Savage combined.
shavenegg it's fantastic!
shavenegg But Neil Breen is also hilarious. The worst movies are the ones that aren't funny and are horribly boring and poorly made.
Nope, watch “things”
Woah now, there are movies much worse than mine. No one talks about them because they're completely unwatchable.

This video doesn't answer the question but it's really simple: The movie is so bad it's good.
So its like watching FLAT EARTH videos.....
The appeal of flat earth videos and other "conspiracy" videos fall into three ranges. (in no particular order)
1) Skepticism
2)Superficial originality (a type of intellectual and or creative lazyness that isn't consciously meta)
3)General Paranoia
Flat Earth videos are my The Room.
Arron Flat Earthers are retarded. B.o.B. is a huge example of that. 😖
well put, especially #2, I haven't been able to put that point to words yet.

Oh hi Mark
I saw rocky horror the first time with a live audience. I had no idea about anything other than the crowd was quite rowdy and weird. Never really ended up liking it, though I tried, because of that first impression of not caring what was going on.
I saw the room by myself after midnight. I recognized how awful it was, but was able to enjoy it. Much easier transition when I saw it with the crazies. That was a fun experience.
I loved rocky horror but the audience was dull and the oonly ones who did participate were older people whomst grew up with it
I'm so grateful I saw Rocky Horror the first time in a generally normal viewing arrangement.
Nope, the worst movie ever is “Manos: The Hands of Fate”
Mystery Science Theater 3000?
Etan Chamare after last season
I saw that movie on MST3K, SO BORING
Yeah, if you watch MST3K it starts to get real hard to decide which movie is the worst.

0:55 to 1:01 was the most brilliant 6 seconds of commentary in my lifetime. The spirit of Siskel & Ebert must have been with him, and thats saying a lot. Well said!
This has to be the most weird video vox has ever produced.
Kanishk Singh Well, The Room is a very weird movie.
And then came The Emoji Movie....
It's pretty decent. I doubt you even watched it
but the emoji movie isn’t ”so bad it’s good”. it’s just bad.
It's legit trash, not charmingly bad like The Room. He actually tried to make something, Sony just made something to make a quick buck.
It’s so bad, it’s bad
nah, ive heard that its not even "so bad its good" its just plane bad
I think it's our schadenfreude kicking in high gear. From a cultural, artistic standpoint, we draw pleasure from watching something so wildly out of touch with cinematic language. It's a masterwork of how not to make a film, which oddly enough, makes it a really intriguing film to watch. Weird how that works. 🤔
Bingo. Everyone recognizes that it's bad, and we get a thrill from seeing people screw up so badly. It's amazing that it even exists.

The Room is not a "low budget" film. Tommy spent about $6M of his own money on that film.
HarryIsTheGamingGeek and he's definitely made his money back in DVD sales.
$6 million is low budget for a movie
Compared to Hollywood's unrealistic "standard", yes. But it's still not low budget.
HarryIsTheGamingGeek yea because he bought cameras instead of renting, did full rewrites off the script and replaced the entire cast.
It is low budget with 6 mil
Tommy is a genius. He was able to make a movie as if it was generated by AI
