  • First Demons vid (WATCH THIS FIRST!): • Dark Souls III Lore | ...
    In this one I talk more about the downfall of Demons and the forces that went up against them. I still need to talk about Cornyx.
    Thank you all who told me what you wanted to see in the 1k video! Now I have quite a few directions that I can go in and finally get out of these goddamned catacombs!

    Speaking to your points about the black knights being old, something interesting I noticed is that their move set is virtually indistinguishable from the DS1 move set (much easier to dodge and backstab compared to many DS3 enemies of their caliber). The only time the knight move set changes is when you find the silver Knights in Irythill/Anor Londo. As if the wandering black Knights have been wandering ever since DS1 and never really changed over time.

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896  8 років тому +12

      That's interesting. Another point I think is minor but at least worth looking at is that when killed, the Silver knight bodies remain on the ground, but when Black Knights are killed, they fade away into a cloud of souls.

    For the record, the temple you're referring to in Cambodia is called Ta Prohm. It's part of the wider Angkor complex, but is distinct from Angkor Wat. It's also one of the only temples that has been overrun by trees.

      Here's hoping we get some DLC to tell us more! And thanks. I wish I'd known from the start that I'd still be stuck talking about this area for so long but that's ok. Pyromancies of the Great Swamp vs. Quelaana and all that will probably be up next.

      Mitch L It's understandable that there will be a level of burnout when doing this lore, it is Souls lore afterall that's not only hard to understand but has deliberate red herrings and NPC's telling lies. Anyway going this deep into the lore only strengthens the quality of your lore series, it'll all be worth it and something to be proud of.
      I'm glad you mentioned the text on the Demon Titanite and the Titanite Demon's themselves, you're the only person I've come across that has brought it up.

      Mitch L Yeah I subscribed to Hawkshaw a few months ago. If it wasn't for his first two lore videos I don't think I would be as observant. I absolutely loved his analysis of Quelana especially the bit about charming you. It's truly amazing that something like that can be pulled off in a video game because I know I was charmed and became another fool. XD

      ***** That weird creature where you find Power Within is pretty much the prince of Izalith. The cut content you're on about is the king of Izalith who is the Exiled Xanthous King Jeremiah so the beast Lorian fought I think is a different beast altogether though I may be wrong. What's even more amazing though is how FromSoft has tied Izalith to Oolacile. The Xanthous set in DS3 is worn by an invader who invades twice in Farron. Farron is believed to be Oolacile due to Dusk's set, dead mushroom bros and Golden Sorcery Scroll, plus some of the Ghru enemies wear Xanthous coloured clothing. DS3 Xanthous head piece is also in the shape of a mushroom and that invader casts sorceries. You know who used to cast sorceries? The Witches of Izalith. Orbeck even confirms in a semi way by mocking the Xanthous scholars by saying they don't have those golden sorceries at their school. It really makes me wonder if the King of Izalith is or was the King of Oolacile as well. All these items and NPC locations looping around to one another really hints that the lore is much much bigger than most people think. It will be absolutely amazing if my theory is true.

    The Demon Ruins were swallowed by chaos lava in Dark Souls 2.
    Black Knights were charred black by Gywn linking the first flame which we see in Dark Souls 1 in the intro video. Gywn has an army of SILVER Knights behind him when he links the First Flame but when he does the flame spreads and burns everything.

    i think the black knight inside the ruins has it out for everyone.Notice how he kills a Ghru when you stumble upon him.Maybe the black knights are actually on individual missions. They are found by themselves throughout the game usualy next to important items. My theory is that since they are very old their alliegeance lies with the Nameless King who is believed to be Gwyn's son. Perhaps they decided to follow him since he is the only deity left alive

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896  8 років тому +1

      I remember reading somewhere that Gwyn's firstborn might have been involved in the training on Silver Knights in Sen's Fortress. you don't talk about something that jumped out at me, even though you featured a close-up of it: the dead shaman where you get the Izalith Tome is one of a few found that have spore-like growths...which are VERY similar to Oceiros' skin or hide. They don't animate or interact in any way, but they do seem to have a "chilling" effect on the Ghru, who are often found nearby "resting".
    I haven't seen anyone else talk about this, but it seems to me that if the point was to kill demons, the alliance seems to have stopped short at some point and Prince Lorian went home with some demons and his father started twisting himself into a half-dragon. I think the Lothric Prince found some power in the Demon Ruins that he took back to his kingdom.

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896  8 років тому +1

      I noticed it, and many other people has, but there is literally nothing else to say about it other than "A Ghru and Oceiros share a specific trait." We don't know what it means, simply because there isn't enough info about the Ghru at this time. For example, something that jumped out at me about Oceiros is that his "wings" have feathers. Dragons aren't supposed to have feathers. However, Gertrude was imprisoned and most likely experimented on by the Scholars of the Grand Archives, which are allied with Oceiros, which creates a link to go on regarding his "transformation" into a demon might have been based on the research that the Scholars had conducted.
      I love to speculate, but I couldn't think of anything else to say about the spores as there is simply such a lack of evidence. We know Lorian travelled at least as far as Smouldering Lake (provided that the Demon Prince was once in Smouldering Lake) but nothing about him physically brining the stray demon back.
      I'd love to see more about the spores in DLC, but right now there wasn't any more than a sentence or so to talk about regarding them.

    Could the Bed of Chaos of whatever still be alive, somehow in this alternate world of Dark Souls 3? That's why the branches are smoldering. Wouldn't it make more sense for the Ghru to be on the side of the Chaos Demons? When you go to the catacombs there are Ghru and Demon Statues. If they were at war with eachother, wouldn't they be fighting each other before you enter the room? Even the Black Knight has no problem killing the Ghru. Perhaps learning Izalith pyromancy was a sort of gift / payment for assisting in resisting the remaining Black Knights and Carthus.

      Tiger Stoneman well seeing as the Chaos Flame was supposed to be an artificial recreation of the First Flame (from my understanding) then I think that is a very plausible idea. That's actually a very interesting thought, it's surprising to come across an idea I haven't yet seen when it comes to Souls lore.

      The chaos flame at the core of its nature Is simply a derivative of the first flames power. it behaves like a parasitic source of power in a sense that The first flames requires humanity to burn, the same is said for chaos which requires the first flame to burn. its a weaker copy of a Powersource that doesnt last forever. Like a wildfire, the demons burned with greater ferocity yet depleted their power much faster than the purer First flame. we become witnesses to the final chaos ember burning itself out in darksouls 3, while the first flame, although weak, still burns faintly.
      My point is the Mighty First flame is fading, the faster burning demons are lucky to still be here considering.

  • @projectPGE

    Nice Video Mitch! Love the way you're trying to go past the pure event analysis by exploring and theorizing social aspects, culture and other "secondary" elements of these communities: found myself intrigued by it! Though imho, I believe that the Demon Clerics(Smouldering Ghru) you've been talking about are not sent from Carthus or someone else to destroy the demons, but are rather demons themself and therefore part of their society. The Chaos Gems can be dropped only from them, the great crabs and some crystal lizards. Then the fact that Chaos weapon scale with intelligence and faith makes me believe that these Demon-Ghrus were the religious class of the demon society, protectors of the sanctity of their heritage. Risking a step further, the Farron-Ghrus which can be found here might have found in them a spiritual guide to overcome their mutated nature: they were the Legion's Alcolytes but have been mutated uppon their relinking the fire (Farron was consumbed by a festering wood after the Legion's sacrifice), something very similar to how the original demons were created, which also happened by manipulating the Fire.

    I think the black knights in Dark souls 1 and Dark souls 3 are different beings. Because in Dark Souls 1, Black Knights are found all around Lordran (yet none of them are even close to the Demon ruins), and seem ok with just sitting around and attacking only the undead, or maybe just anything that comes near them. The Ds1 Black Knight armor seems to imply that they are just armors with no purpose,like basically hollows. While in Dark Souls 3 it's obvious that even now they hunt the demons.

    Actually, I don’t think the Gru learned any Chaos Pyromancy because they don’t cast any lava based spells. I could be possible they reverse engineered the spells but that really doesn’t make sense for they’ve greatly reduced the powers in this case.
    I’m suspecting that’s the Gru pyromancers were already pyromancers who joined with Furons Legions to combat the abyss for dark based enemies fear fire due to their weakness towards it. Overtime they de-evolved into the subspecies they are now and ended up worshiping demons as gods.
    You will notice that the black knights have no love for the Gru nor do the Gru like the knights.

      they also fought a war against the demons before gwyn chose to link the flame. gwyn sat there in the kiln from the time he linked it until we kill him, The war took place before his eventual decision to Make the ultimate sacrifice for his Worlds sake.

    You do realize that clerics are a general term for practically every religion in the game, referenced or visualized?
    Londor has clerics,
    Carim has Clerics
    Thorolund has Clerics
    Drangleic has Clerics
    Lindelt has Clerics
    Lotheric has Clerics
    etc.

    • @mitchl6896
      @mitchl6896  8 років тому +2

      Sure, but many of those locations (or simply families, in Thorolund's case) all adhere to the Way of White. The being said, I realise that not all clerics originate from the same place. Sorry if that's not more obvious in the video.

    • @Garl_Vinland
      @Garl_Vinland 8 років тому

      There's no evidence that the Way of White has or had influence in Drangleic or Lindelt. Even discounting Dark Souls 2, it would seem that Lotheric clerics follow a completely different path than the Way of White faith, as do the clerics of Londor especially. One could possibly make the presumption that The Way of White was the first documented instance of organized theocracy which had clerics. I'm simply under the impression that other nations like Carim, and Astora also had clerics, due to both their religious natures, that do not necessarily coincide with the "Vereor Nox" attitude of Thorolund.
      One can also use the Princess Guard covenant for evidence in different sects of "Clerics" or "Priestesses" whom had access to miracles exclusive to them outside the Way of White.
      I'm interested in what you take away from Dark Souls 2 as that game expands on this even further.

    Black knights were not scorched black by demon fire. The Black Knights were scorched black by Gwyn linking the first flame.

      "These are former Silver Knights of Gwyn that were charred black during the Demon War. They traveled with him to the Kiln of the First Flame, but were burned by the still hot ashes. Now these mighty knights roam Lordran and, in their hollowed state, are looking to kill the chosen undead as he/she will try to kill the one they were sworn to protect."

      Mitch L what is that from? I more than likely got confused in all of the lore videos I listen to. Fire of the demon war or fire from the Knights following Gwyn to the kiln is probably where I got it confused.

      andrew porter there's really no wrong in souls lore, other than obvious things. I've heard many people say they were scorched while fighting the demons, and I've even heard from some people that they could have been scorched by demons then further scorched by the first flame. Each of these possibilities seem plausible, though I'm of the opinion that they were scorched while attempting to kill the demons.

      Various item descriptions tell that both stories are correct. Some Black Knight accompanied Gwyn and were scorched by the linking of the fire, while others were charred by the battle against demons.

      Callisto Wickham I may be completely wrong, but I've heard many more people say it was scorched by attempts to fight the demons. Have you got anything to back what you said up though? It'd sure be interesting to learn why you have that thought.

      Heath Dan no he took some of his Silver Knights to fight the dragons and the dragons charred them black the first game out right says this

    • @mwperk02
      @mwperk02 7 років тому

      It's entirely plausible for the black knights to have been scorched by more than one source. The dragons, Linking the First Flame, Demons. These are all sources of intense fire and any one of them could of easily caused the charring of the silver knights.
