Is there any connection between how the drang npc enemies right after Pontiff Sulyvan are found in the area with giants, and how you can find the drang set in the cathedral of the deep where one of the giants is cowering?
I've always been curious if 'leveling up' is only for humans or if any living thing could do it and if it's the dark soul that allows humans to become eventually stronger than the gods in this setting
I think the species that have a a Link to the Lord Souls can. The way I see it is that Humans (Dark Soul.) Can level up. I think a great example of gaining power from the death, and absorbtion of souls is Ornstein and Smough fight where one gain incrediable strength from absorbing the souls of the other. Another example could be the Abyss Watchers. I think if you took out the 'game mechanic' way of leveling up we would increase our power much the same way. (Note:I am ignoring most of DS2's lore because...its DS2's lore.)
I actually have a theory on this, and its that humans are actually quite bad at it, in every souls game you have to go through someone else, or something else, now of course in dks1 this may simply be game mechanics, but not in 2 and 3, as they require another person, namely a firekeeper, a font of power replicating the original soul of man, meanwhile we have the godly beings like. The nameless king or biggie and smalls who not only gain stature, but power in an instant by "claiming" their allies soul, they don't need to go through anyone, because this is a natural process, and humans can only attempt to emulate it.
I to believe that the giant in the undead settlement is Gough. And by the looks of it, he was enslaved to at some point(you can see the broken chains coming out from his body), but he somehow managed to get free. I don't remember the dialogues at this point very well, but probably he had help from Siegward .
Perhaps they like the birch that hides them because they are such nice peaceful, and shy creatures. It is also clearly a gift of friendship, because the undead settlement giant gives you a custom birch tree
Love the focus of the video on giants,i am baffled that noone ever talks about them specifically even tho the size discrepancies are one of the weirdest things in the games since human corpses only carry humanity while giants that seem to have souls as well seem to never have them.
Great video, man! I really enjoyed your take on the Giants, mainly because they're a race that is easy to overlook. The fashion at 14:00 is great btw! My question is this though. Why would Gough retire to Oolacile? It's not really a nice place at the moment. Maybe it was even the residents of Oolacile that put the pine resin in his helmet, after he arrived seeking to aide Artorias. Overall though, I loved the video, thank you for some quality content.
Hey, thanks for your feedback. I'm not really sure why he is in Oolacile. I'm honestly surprised that they put his bow in DS3 at all (wielded by the tower giant). Giants don't really seem to be that concerned with the first flame/the dark and whatever, since they don't really "die" the same way that humans do. I might have to revisit giants at some point and see if there's anything new to unearth. Thanks again!
I nearly jumped out of my skin the first time that damn giant actually helped me in the swamp. The big crab came scuttling over, then a great arrow speared him right into the muck. I'd been through Farron a handful of times before this and never seen it happen, but the giant will definitely help you out.
@@silvertemplar8061 as long as you leave one Young White Branch next to one of the trees, yes. Once you collect them all, he dies. But as long as there's one somewhere, he'll shoot that crab if it's near the tree.
Your opening disclaimer isn't disclaiming anything. I think it would make more sense to either do away with the header or change it. Also, I like how your videos are becoming more and more distinct from other dark souls videos. You have a nice touch. Good content, keep it up.
Maybe the magic from those trees (from oolacile too) are the Good emotions within humans, Abyss' magics are the bad emotions within humans, and the blue ones are neutral, reason based sorceries.
As a Wildland firefighter I can corroborate the Swedish fire story. Certain trees hold a great volume of water and groups of these trees can inhibit the progress of a wildfire because they do not burn easily. Birch trees are one of these species.
That's something that I've wondered about but I don't think I have a complete answer on the matter just yet. I'd like to believe that From Soft wasn't being lazy and just decided to re use an asset.
if there is a connection it might tie in with how some people say the time warp thing within the game and ricard is pre-wolnir then once he kills the carthus kings and makes one crown it makes him into a beast sorta like aldrich turning to slime when devouring men
stopped watching around 6:30 after you got info about Hawkeye's helmet wrong, didn't feel like getting misinformed further. The ones who packed his eye holes with resin did so just before he went into battle, and it made him go blind.
The great archer of the undead settlement may be Gough, because the white birch trees were spawned by the dropped staff of young Princess Dusk. the giant will protect you if you have the gifted white branch from the giant (Or the white branch starting item) in your inventory, both of which have special descriptions. Dusk in DS1 was fond and kind to the giant archer Gough (as it is hinted at in gameplay) these two facts in conjunction make pretty good groundwork to say that the giant archer may be Gough or at least a descendant of him. and as Farron is also Darkroot/Oolacil and the archer makes farron considerably more survivable, there is yet another tie. also side note, Xanthous crown is based of an "Ancient mystic creature." the Oolacil mushroom people were skilled in the arts of magic, and the 'crown' looks like a shroom.
Maybe the giant you find where the blacksmith was in the first game was actually Gough, trying to save the blacksmith from the Aldrich followers enslaving the Giants, giving him his bow when he couldn't go on. And the blacksmith escaped, leaving his smithing coal behind. Just a thought.
Giants were already enslaved in DS1 (see Sen's Fortress). Gough and the blacksmith were the exception to the rule, owing their favorable treatement to their exceptional skills, but even they were spited and looked down upon.
Yhorm was another example of a human honoring a giant. Siegward refers to Yhorm as a friend and upholds his promise with him. I believe Yhorm was the beginning of the mistreatment of giants because humans doubted him. Correct me if i'm wrong.
wow didn't realise you hadn't played it. It doesn't deserve the criticism it gets from Dark Souls 1 fans. The weapon variety was great and it had more viable armour and weapons for PvP than 1 and 3 (after it was fully patched) and it was huge with a massive number of bosses. It's just the world design and some story choices they took aren't the best.
Ds1 was sort of special in the way it introduced new mechanics, interaction with lore(normally games have cut scenes, long dialogs, and other crappy ways of presenting the lore, dark souls lore is optional you can literally play it without knowing the purpose of the game. However it is there and it pushed people to know the why the game played the way it did, it roused their curiosity and desire for more knowledge about the goings of dark souls that literally channels sprung up to support the findings of the game), ds2 expanded on many things connection, pvp, weapons and extra content, yet it fans felt let down about the way the game interacted with them. it became more casual, no, more mainstream like the shooters that dropped their uniqueness in order to follow the cod formula. Yet, ds1 was no perfect game with its faults in connectivity, pc port, and pvp faults. Ds2 world did not make sense like ds1 that had a interconnected world and fluent gameplay feels like a step back or different game just with the same branding.
One thing I find interesting is that Yhorm has a face, rather than a hole in his head, implying one of two things: he is not the same species as all the other giants we've seen, OR he is the same species as the DS1 and DS3 giants, but the DS2 giants, the ones who become trees, are a totally unrelated species. I think the latter is probably more accurate, considering that DS2's giants are built differently than the ones in the rest of the series. So I think we're dealing with two distinct species, correlated only by their size.
I really like that fact about Yhorm. My initial thought was that he's one of the "old breed," and has just managed to escape persecution or enslavement, however he is a "descendent of a conqueror" which could be the giant king, who had the big old hole in the face, so it's hard to say.
Small note, in greek culture and myth, Archers are viewed with some prestige. To be an archer was to be a professional soldier or hunter that has mastered the use of a very difficult and important weapon.
Kinda hard to figure out what is and isn't a giant in Dark Souls given how utterly bonkers things size can be. I mean Vendrick in DS2 was the size of a giant, and he's supposedly just a human.
Is there something about tree resin that implies stupidity or brutishness, as he obviously didnt need to see out of the helmet to be effective. It's like giving someone an orange because they arent a good singer. one doesnt relate to the other.
i really never thought the giants in ds 1 and 3 had much importance just regular enemies or there purpose is to help but thanks to this video i know now they aren't just in the game for any reason and their location as well
Have you ever thought about making a video about the very unique only female giant found in the DS series? Beyond being rare with a female name, her name is also very different than just about every character. Characters usually never have a normal surname, maybe something like a title or location affiliation but never a proper surname like she has. Also her name doesn't sound like it belongs in a game with a medieval theme, it actually sounds modern like she could be your neighbor than a NPC. I definitely would be interested in hearing your thoughts on that, plus any lore interpretations regarding the giant that's named "Judi Cator"
I always was under the impression from all I've read and watched about the souls series that the Giants were actually from another land and imprisoned and brought to work here as slaves by humans. The ones we see without faces are actually golems recreated after the first giants were brought here with magic to work too. Golems usually don't have faces in mythology and i'm pretty sure you can find evidence of them being golems ins some items which I can't remember which ones. However that doesn't explains much since if you take a look almost EVERY enemy is some kind of giant by themselves, the bosses being the best example. All the knights, the bosses, the demons almost every enemy that are not foot soldiers seems to be of a larger stature. I would love to hear your thoughts about this explaining why everyone seems to be so huge the more powerful they are. I know this could be just a graphic thing to make the beings appear more powerful but I don't find that to be the true since in the Souls series everything is interconnected and not just for the looks. Again, would love to hear some kind of reasoning from yourself on this. One theory I have is that everyone that is of normal stature is descendant from Pigmy and a normal "human" every other are descendant of the former gods and thus larger. I have no idea how to prove that tho but it's an interesting thought.
I'll definitely see if theres enough to talk about for a video and explore it! What I might do is do a "Lore Cluster" video or something, talking about 2 or 3 parts of lore that don't have much on them, but that I find interesting.
I thought that the giant Hawkeye archer (forgot his name) was actually blind, so is that why he don't care about his helmet being covered with resin or was he called blind because of his helmet being covered with resin and just didn't give a shit?
I totally missed the fact that the pygmee coul be called that way in relation to giants. Is this your theory ? I never saw that before, and i think it's brilliant ! If not, that's still a great video, thank you for your work !
I guess Gough was right, true human nature brought the giants pain, but maybe (assuming gough is the giant in the tower) he saw something in us much like Yhorm saw something in Seigward
Neat video, and pretty insightful. I would point out that calling Silver Knights humans to relate with Gough's cynicism of humans is... a bit of a stretch. They are almost certainly the same species as or related to the same species as Gwyn. Though that does bring some interesting questions as to where humans came into the story and world if they weren't sane before the discovery of the Dark Soul.
I would like to make the comment that the Giants of Sens Fortress, of which you showed clips, were also enslaved to guard and maintain the traps there. I would disagree the shift is as drastic as you imply and assert that giants have never been looked on with fondness by humans in the Souls Series. Gough and the Blacksmith are the only two giants who were tolerated by the humans because they provided a service and were presumably protected by Gwyn and his lineage. I do appreciate the amount of work you've put into this video though, some very nice comparisons drawn and lore points examined.
Quincy Quincy I wish there were more Yhorm-type giants in the game, even though Storm Ruler completely destroys them. Maybe they could be friendly, too.
Yhorm was a gaint but his royal blood helped him get the throne for the profaned capital remember the areas we travel have a gay 1000s of years so different age different customs in some eras gaints were treated equals in some eras they weren't.
Through my first play through I never killed a single giant because I thought maybe there was a way to make them friendly like the first giant you meet. Sad to know that they really are hostile. :(
Don't forget the giant of the undead settlement is a crack shot at helping you, and you can kill him and get Hawkeyes ring, which unlike most rings has the historical characters life and name in the description instead of saying the name is forgotten with time. Which more likely suggest that the giant is Hawkeyes, or is related to him, perhaps as his son. Or daughter? Are there girl Giants?
Finally someone covering something other than the damn bosses in dark souls lore.

Small note, in greek culture and myth, Archers are viewed with some prestige. To be an archer was to be a professional soldier or hunter that has mastered the use of a very difficult and important weapon.
That's very interesting! Thanks for pointing it out.
And what about the connection between DS2 Giants (like one as giant's tree in DS3), Yorm and these guys? Why they are different? Are they of one kind?
Yhorm isn't the same species as the ones in DSII.
Kinda hard to figure out what is and isn't a giant in Dark Souls given how utterly bonkers things size can be. I mean Vendrick in DS2 was the size of a giant, and he's supposedly just a human.

The Giants of Dark Souls III really have it bad now, probably due to the malicious shenanigans of Pontiff Sulyvahn.
Could it be that Gough has hollowed to a point in which his speech is impaired?
Is there something about tree resin that implies stupidity or brutishness, as he obviously didnt need to see out of the helmet to be effective. It's like giving someone an orange because they arent a good singer. one doesnt relate to the other.
I really enjoy your videos
Good video. But nothing about Yhorm? Do you not think he's the same kind of giant as the others?
Check the description :) I have a full video planned for him later.
i really never thought the giants in ds 1 and 3 had much importance just regular enemies or there purpose is to help but thanks to this video i know now they aren't just in the game for any reason and their location as well
Have you ever thought about making a video about the very unique only female giant found in the DS series?
And cool, hope you get to it mate! :)
I thought you said at first " I will not be discussing giants from dark souls too much because" threw me off a bit 😄
I thought that the giant Hawkeye archer (forgot his name) was actually blind, so is that why he don't care about his helmet being covered with resin or was he called blind because of his helmet being covered with resin and just didn't give a shit?
GBishop17 Gough
8:44 anyone else notice that his face looks like the statues that look at the ocean? (The 1s where you only see the head n nothing more)
I personally think that the giant in Undead settlement is actually one of Goughs descendants.
The giant archer in the undead settlement is staring at Lordran😭.
I totally missed the fact that the pygmee coul be called that way in relation to giants. Is this your theory ? I never saw that before, and i think it's brilliant ! If not, that's still a great video, thank you for your work !
Hawkshaw touched on the possibility in his timeline video in passing, I just took it a few steps further. Thank you!
i love how you are playing game of thrones music in the video
It fits very well!
I think you're on to something with Manus' connection to Jainism or Hinduism: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manu_(Hinduism)
Aren't the original lords giants? Gwyn, Nito and The witch. Or is their size just a reference to power?
It's a dark souls video and a English lesson 10/10
Class is now in session :)
Thank you for your balanced feedback! You're the best kind of commenter.
Swede here, you are correct wit h the birch trees in Umeå.
Another fact about birch trees. Yggdrasil, the norse world tree is a birch tree.
To the right of firelink shrien (ds3) you can see a dead ds2 giant with a tree growing out of it
My God! That blacksmith originally had a face? I know that now he has a mask but I´m pretty sure the face is still cannon.
Sad that Mitch stopped uploading
SteezyMPeezy I’m still around :)
Mitch L
What's that last song?
one of the daenerys theme from game of thrones
The BossDragon Thanks
Makes me respect Gwyn for being one of the only ones to respect the giants
you forgot about goughs ring the giant of the undead settlement drops
maybe the undead settlement giant is Goth and he has lost speech and changed with age
incredible! it never crossed my mind that the giants turned into slaves/beast of burden. what did Yorm think of this?
Quincy Quincy Yhorm isn't actually a giant, he was only called one because of his size
But he's huge hahah.
Thnx for the info. I just recently took a liking to dark souls 3
How do the giants proliferate?
Wait, what about Yhorm? Does he still count as a giant?
Did anyone else hear game of thrones music?
Galen Lovejoy yeah I was wondering if anyone else heard it
Just realised this comment is 2 years old XD
13:55 That outfit is really cool.
There is a possibility that velka might be furtive Pygmy or at least a group of individuals because the gender of the furtive Pygmy isn't known
Callum Lyall Nothing even remotely indicating that so no point in speculating.
Did you notice that the giants of ds3 have holes in their faces like the ones in ds2 exept yorm who has a face
And that is why, i don't ever link the fire, better off reseting the whole world than let it rot further and further as it drag on.
I thought Orenstein was the leader of Gwyns Four Knights, not
Gough.
What about York the Giant?
Read description :)
+Mitch L okay, but what about his friend onion head knight.
You forgot about the one in the dungeon
35 seconds in and im already interested
you are amazing im subbed
Damn it, This makes me even more satisfied when I owned Pontiff Sulyvhan by parrying all his moves.
I love that you use GOT soundtrack
