I noticed you don’t post as much but you really are good with this and shouldn’t stop… elden ring has so much lore with a whole dlc coming out to give you even more content. I’m currently playing Bloodborne now on ps5 and that’s what brought me to your page.. you got a new subscriber brother
I think the powder kegs were just blamed for the burning of Old Yharnam (Which was easy as they seem to like explosions). But the city wasn't exploded, just burned down. It seems to me that the healing church is just hiding their misdeeds (again).
Mr Shaak yes but keep in mind that there arent any church hunter corpses in old yharnam, just powder keg weapons and corpses (and djura and his follower). there is some evidence of explosions too, in the first building djura shoots at you, youll see its half blown up, and afterwards there are barrels of gunpowder.
@@boxobanter3278 these things aren't mutually exclusive. It seems to me that if it was a cover up, church hunters would have been involved, and possibly instructed to use the Powder Kegs as a scape goat and letting them do most of the work while the church hunters made sure no one left the district.
It wad the powderkegs that burned old Yharnam. Afterwards, they decided it was unnecessary to kill the remaining beasts, and holed up down there.
It was the powder kegs it's been confirmed in the comics
The healing church is basically the CIA of Yharnam
Something I'd like to note is the use of the term "ain't" when quoting the Powder Kegs; whereas most of the hunters can tie themselves to the Healing Church, the Powder Kegs can be seen as a mostly secular institution. While the members of the church seem to follow an outdated and high-minded obsession with the old blood, the powder kegs seem to exist to utilize modern technology and ideals to deal with modern problems. This could also explain why they are considered to be heretical by the Church, as the powder kegs would present an alternative to the healing church's ability to contain the beast plague.
this to a T
The powder kegs are for lack of a better terminology or ideal in a spot that can best be described with warhammer40k terms of being tech heretics or having committed tech heresy.
their weapons and methods were more akin to all out warfare and were extremely powerful and could be easily used to cause the church a huge headache if anyone realized the way to stop beasts was to stop the church or just a general populace uprising against the church for lack of being able to save them from beasts etc.
overall they got deemed heretics for being a threat to the church via there technological prowess and overall capabilities at seemingly demolition and war ontop of potentially them realizing people becoming beasts isnt just a scourge or plague its wrong and hunting them vs trying to quarantine and cure them for a long-term solution i imagine the powder kegs being so inventive if left to their devices or paired with those in the church or bergynworth or any faction who sought not the old ones power but to just stop the plague would of realized the source of the scourge (and that there probably isnt a cure) and turned against those seeking blood potentially causing civil war or doing alot of damage with their advanced weaponry.
I also assumed that the fact the weapons were considered "brutal" was a factor. If the weapons were more likely to spill blood, then it means that the hunters were more likely to become drunk on it.
I never took the word "heretics" literally when it came to the Powder Kegs. They were "workshop heretics" in that their weapons differed greatly from the other hunters', but that's as far as it went. They weren't actually heretics of the Healing Church, just outcasts.
That difference of ideas and the lack of the use of blood makes them Heretics to the Healing Church, by definition.
Yes, the church developed a cannon... and then hid it, deep in the cellar under the surgery altar, which can only be moved by high ranking members of the church. I think its difficult and surreptitious location is somehow relevant, as it is one of the only two church cannons we ever see, the other being a much larger, likely-not-intended-to-be-portable version carried by the space-face outside Ludwig's bossroom. (Which is also not far from the cannon you can get yourself) Is it possible that the church developed the cannon, but had to keep its creation a secret to save face, as the Powder Kegs were already considered heretics? Maybe, but there are timeline issues there involving the creation of the nightmare and the branding of the heretics, so perhaps it was created as a prototype, then Old Yharnam burned, then they decided not to use it to avoid seeming like they were using the ideology of the Kegs, after what was likely a public shaming of their methods.
I think it is incorrect to label Djura's companion in the Hunter's nightmare as blood drunk if that were the case wouldn't he slaughter the beasts in the cave with him? If anything he is protecting them from any potential threats which make sense seeing how he has position himself. Also hunters such as Simon,Brador and even the playable character show that one can enter the nightmare not being blood drunk.
For that be true u need to consider Simon and Brador not blood drunk and it's disputable.
@@BlackBoltGames
Well, the main character is not blood drunk
@@fatalos6855 But I suppose he is cast by Amy because he is holding the eye of a blood drunk hunter.
@@BlackBoltGames
Eh, fair
@@BlackBoltGames well are Simon and Brador blood drunk? Maybe Brador is questionable but Simon seems as sane as it gets. And it seems like Brador isn’t there because he’s blood drunk, but rather he was placed there strategically by the church to deal with people like the player who made their way in looking for answers. From what we’ve seen blood drunk hunters are very predictable, they’re violent, and they almost don’t even seem sentient anymore, as though they’ve become feral animals driven by the singular purpose of being showered with blood. I don’t think that even describes Brador, even if he is a murderous assassin, let alone Simon.
I'm of the opinion that the branding of "heretic" is a translation issue. I think it just means that they were just a sub-sect of Gherman's hunters who liked big booms and made their own weapons that made big booms, as opposed to the simplicity of traditional workshop equipment.
That the church would have pronounced the Powder Kegs as heretics because of the burning of old Yharnam never occurred to me before, but it makes sense to me. I just might adopt it as my newest headcanon. Also very happy to see new Bloodborne stuff still coming out!
It doesn't have to be your headcanon, it's part of the lore already
I love the way the powder kegs’ lore is illusive, but I also love how the descriptions of their weapons sound pretty sarcastic
I think the reasoning behind why old yharnam was burned down may have been more calculated than people realize. With the outspread of the ashen blood, people began to become sick and turn into beasts as their blood literally became poison. I think the ashen blood in particular made the beasts more ferocious due the the fact the beasts were in such pain they wanted to transfuse their ashen blood with fresh human blood of their victims. The powderkeys were afraid that the beasts would overrun the city so they devised a plan to starve them out. As long as the beasts didn't have more humans to feed on the scourge couldn't continue. That's why you see a werewolf similar to the blood starved beast chained to the ceiling because they were burning the remains of the werewolves so that their blood could not contaminate the rest of the population. And of course, it's why the bloodstarved beast its named that way. The bloodstarved beast was intentionally deprived of blood allowing his current blood to stew into a deadly poison.
"If it ain't got kick, it just ain't worth it" STAKEDRIVER!!!
Djura's set interestingly has the highest frenzy resistance. I wonder if this is related to his compassion for the residents of Old Yharnam.
Whoa, i dont believe it. A Bloodborne lore video on my notifications?
It's enough to make a man sick...

Lore all over the shop.

I'd been obsessively consuming Bloodborne lore since it came out. I finally got a PS4 to play it and am absolutely blown away by it
Every time i hear the name of daddy Valtr feel just a little safer at night.
Zack Kerber All vermin are to be crushed - "Daddy" Valtr
I feel bad... I killed him out of curiosity today .-.
And their theme song is "Sanctified with Dynamite" by powerwolf.
You mention the red moon on the night Old Yharnham burned. It could be that there was a ritual intended, perhaps using the Good Chalice and torching the town as a last resort to contain the beasts botched the ritual. That would have them deemed heretics in the eyes of the Healing Church.
Dude, I love your lore videos. Too many people make theories which deviate from the content in the game. I'm glad you stick as closely as possible to the game's information. It just makes so much more sense, and really helps to bring all the pieces of a big picture together.
0:56 Just going to take the time to appreciate you said "many moons ago."
I thought they were called the powder cakes lol
spaghetti dude snackborne
I highly doubt that
That sounds like a gay bar lol
The church heretics: powder cakes owo
Because your a muppet
I love your bloodborne videos they go super in depth, I probably come back to watch them every couple months
Powder Kegs are my fav; Boom Hammer 4 Lyfe
DarkBlood Souls yeah mate, wish there was a covenant for them
Great to see some more Bloodborne content! I just have some thoughts about Laurence, even though it wasn't important for this video.
Since Willem is Kin when we meet him, can we really estimate his age? It seems like he could be hundreds of years old by now.
And because Gehrman is pleading for Laurence in his sleep (Oh, Laurence... what's taking you so long... I've grown too old for this, of little use now, I'm afraid..."), is it not likely Laurence entered the nightmare after Gehrman entered the dream?
Awww yeah Bloodborne lore's back baby!
any bb lore videos are great!!! thanks for the up load
There may also be a potential that the powderkegs were considered heretical for their particular weapon design choices, as some take after some functionality of that of the Cainhurst weapons, such as the Reicterpallasche, which of course, we also were known to be hated by the church.
The powderkegs were labeled heretics after the burning of old yharnam, and you're right that it was a last resort. But the specific reason was for the fact that the remaining powderkeg hunters chose to seal off old yharnam and protect the few beasts that harmlessly dwelled there. Beats who were just recently their friends
I LOVE Bloodborne lore. Please don't let this games lore community die! ;-;
not late. perfect timing. second playthrough and i actually care about whats going on and get it
I love these as usual! Especially liked the part where you discussed Djura and how hes possibly not a Keg Workshop member. I hope we get more Bloodborne
At least it's not powder keks
lulz
Yo Mitch!
I've been LOVING your bb lore videos, huge fan!
thank you thank you
Whos still is enjoying deep diving into Bloodborne lore in 2019? That Victorian and Lovecraftian story the lore plays off of with it's intellectual plot with many horrific points just makes it so easy to get caught up in so many different parts of the lore I tend to keep coming back to again and again.
You know, I felt like watching a bunch of your lore videos on Bloodborne as I try to sleep but not having a playlist specific for it makes things much more bothersome and right now I only felt like listening to some lore and sleep, alas maybe I will another time.
Fear the old blood, hunter.
I always thought the burning of old yharnam was sanctioned by the healing church based on the "moonlight night" note in the dark building that leads up to the cleric beast.
Has anyone else noticed the beast embrace/beast claw npc in the nightmare looks like the looks like the cannibal beast beast guy you find in the forest
I have completed all Dark Souls now but have yet to touch Bloodborne because I do not have a PS4. Sucks!
I finished this game last year, still thinking about replaying it to this day. This is the best game of that generation for me so far.
Harry LEVI If Bloodborne 2 is announced next week, it may be a good idea to get one.
I was in the same boat as you but I was able to barely afford one so I did get it. It has its own share of problems so if you can’t get it don’t sweat it too much. Dark Souls 3 has quite a few similarities without the drawbacks or issues Bloodborne is known for.
I wish I could erase all memory of Bloodborne and start over. I watched so many videos on bloodborne BEFORE I played the game, and I feel like I ruined my blind first play through.
The first hunts were secretive... It's why the workshop is so well hidden and was intended to keep people ignorant of the growing beastly scourge.
Also, I believe the Powder Kegs were blamed for the burning of Old Yharnam so there could be a scapegoat for the healing church's cover up of their work with Ashen Blood and the Old Blood, aware that they the latter was the cause of the Beastly Scourge.
10:41 - imagine if Djura continues to turn his head
much love Mitch. I always look forward to your content. keep em coming.
If the youngest was blood drunk why was he continuing to protect beasts? He was guarding a cave full of them, including another blood starved.
Always glad to see another video from you Mitch
hugely enjoyed this video, thanks for making the video Mitch
As always your musical choices are ON POINT
Its pretty sweet having you back on a Bloodborne video man. You have been away for a while, welcome.
I agree with everything. But where would you place beastclaw Jozef in all of this? He's an old hunter you can summon in the Loran chalice dungeons and he also wears the charred hunters garb. Was he a random hunter who just wore the garbs, or was he connected to Djura somehow?
Workshops of powder kegs are in Yharnam where you get the beast rune . All the workshops have saw signs above the doors. Also the workshops are classed based , bottom lies Oto , Saw and Powder Kegs, above the streets lies Gerhmans worshop and above that came Church workshop when you ascend Odeon chapel. Its clear that the church discovered more powerful beasts which fire and saw dont work hence the eccentric Archibald failed .
I know this is a couple years old but i love hearing other peoples lore ideas other than vaati
i want more Lovecraft story like rpg's q.q
My take on this?
Powder Kegs/Otto workshop first come as engineers and craftsman to the still secret hunters of the church during the first outbreaks
As the church and hunters keep trying to keep the plague secret with the new founded White and Black church hunters, they begin to further their research.
The incident at the fishing hamelt occurs and they all can point at Byrgenwerth as the culprits, most likely helped with their attires still ressembling the uniforms of the academy, which means Gherman's workshop gets disbanded. But the Powder Kegs, now at the service of Ludwig, begin crafting their new gear, this would make sense seeing as Ludwig's own workshop was aiming to take down much larger beasts. The Old Yharnam is lost and the powder kegs, possibly pressured on all sides by both the church and the other hunters, with the population of Old Yharnam all succumbing, and in that desperation, cornered, burn it all to cinders.
Djura, being a most likely responsible hand in this, loses it and leaves the church, as the rest of the powder kegs are forced to be the scapegoats for the healing church to save face, with his apprentice deciding to following him to atone. As for the one in the HN, most likely one of those hunters who enjoyed killing beasts in all shapes or forms and couldn't tell each other apart anymore.
Oh yeah, more Bloodborne videos, nice to see you're still into it :D
great video as always
Thanks!
the wheel of Mitch-fortune
another great video mitch l ;)
i always look forward to your bb lore vids
Amazing stuff really
The blood drunk hunters don’t just cover their eyes, they are removed.
I feel like a few people have voiced this already but; I think the the powder kegs were blamed for the burning of old yharnam when in fact they turned on the church and defended it, much like Djura and his compatriots are found doing when you first stumble into the old city. they were perhaps ordered to kill everyone, but as a group decided not. Djura and his friends defended the city, and the Church, while doing a great deal of damage and sealing of the old city to the rest of Yharnam, did not kill everyone (as a lot of the people still survive as beasts) and then blamed the destruction of the city and its people on the Powder Kegs. This would have to be done in a time when most of the Hunters weren’t aware of what exactly was going on with the Healing Chruch, but the last straw for them was the ordering of genocide.
daaaamn, the "Beast Cutter" is a... it's a f***ing Beast!!!
I think there’s a very significant connection between old Yharnam and yaraghoul (however you spell it) seeing as they are connected to each other. Old Yarnham separates the unseen village from the cathedral ward. Perhaps Mensis was fucking shit up with rituals and created the ashen scourge or the church created it to cover up Mensis and create a buffer zone between the Mensis rituals and the rest of Yarnham. Instead of the population knowing about the bat shit crazy Mensis shit, the beasts fucked up old Yarnham and the powder kegs were a scapegoat. There fire, explosive weapons were deemed heretical and Mensis was covered up. There is another way to the unseen village through the shrouded church patches sends you too, but that’s by the grand cathedral and not close to any civilians as only church officials are near it.
Welp I'm making a new character as soon as I get off from work. strictly powder keg. His name shall be Mark Rango.
i looooove the powder kegs, this reminds me i need to make a build off them. what are the best powder keg weapons?
box o' banter My personal favorite is the stake driver. Don't get me wrong I love the boom hammer and rifle spear, they're all great. its really just a personal preference for me.
box o' banter boom hammer, go strength arcane and see the results
christopherhicklin yeah i was thinking of doing it with the stake driver and the boom hammer (maybe the rifle spear for range). should i stick to just a quality build, or should i dip into bloodtinge for the long rifle and gattling gun? thanks for commenting :)
Jake Pringle never tried strength/arcane for boom hammer. does it work well?
box o' banter Whenever I do a character with a secondary weapon I do put points in that stat but I remember my main goal (primary weapon) if you go rifle spear as secondary then yes I would suggest having bloodtinge as a secondary stat but I personally wouldn't make it the priority.
Fuck man I love your videos. Don’t ever stop uploading content
nice stuff
I believe that the eye of a blood drunk hunter belongs to djura. I think he removed his eye and covered his socket to not be brought to the nightmare but other hunters would think that he is traped in the nightmare. And rhat djura protects the beasts so that he will never be tempted to hunt beasts and be sent to the nightmare.
About damn time!!
So glad for this!!
I wonder if they worked with Vilebloods? Both are hated by the Church, supposedly.
Highkey best soulsborne lad
Awesome topic!
I think that the beast claw hunter might be Izzy because beast claw was wilded by Izzy and this is the only enemy we meet that uses this weapon... but that's just my theory
(1) the hunters were not as superstitious as you might think, it's just they're aligned with a pre 1700's theological and scientific (these were not in distinct and separate categories until a few hundred years ago) tradition of alchemy which venerates certain substances and especially metals, but in bloodborne that's actually how things work-quicksilver and blood are both genuine holy mediums, and higher metals such as gold are symbols of divinity and perfection (such as the gold blood gem which does additional damage to unholy beasts or the gold ardeo). There's even a book entitled 'Alchemy 5' in the Hunter's Dream
(2) please don't use the term 'Paleblood hunter', the game gives multiple names for the same idea without Redgrave's dirty print (such as moonlit hunters, moon-scented hunters, hunters of the dream, etc).
(3) it's possible the Powder Kegs were not heretical because they transgressed against the church, but rather because their philosophy was in opposition to Gehrman's tradition, and the larger tradition of the hunt, which was expressed by engaging beasts with simplicity and speed, not "complex design and big booms." On another point, the category for Powder Keg weapon and armor in your storage chest is the regular workshop, not the church workshop
What's wrong with Redgrave?
'Paleblood hunter' is a bad name because combined with the title 'The Paleblood Hunt' it presupposes Paleblood is something that ought to be hunted, and it presupposes that anyone who was a moon-scented hunter was supposed to be hunting Paleblood-what I meant by "Redgrave's dirty print" is this misleading name that isn't based on anything, not Redgrave as a whole (although a lot of his interpretations are weird and arbitrary)
There are only two lore stories I'm interested in now, Rom and Runesmith Caryll. If Bloodborne 2 is a thing I seriously hope they give more information on these characters.
It's weird watching this after the comic came out
The only acceptable way of life. Embrace the big booms.
You should turn your videos into voice recording birthday cards and sell them at super markets
Music from Dracula (1992) in background, good choice :)
I don’t think the powder kegs were just merchants because if that was the case why would they have gone to burn down old yharnam? It didn’t mention hunters using powder keg weapons, it said powder kegs themselves. And I think the charred hunter set was their uniform at some point. I mean it makes sense that the guys obsessed with fire and explosives would craft armor that’s resistant to fire and explosives. But it was charred and tattered from the fire. And then how could the healing church blame the powder kegs for yharnam’s burning down if they really were just merchants? I think they were their own workshop but after they were labeled heretics and hunted down by the church they disbanded, which is why you don’t find any intact samples of their armor, just the charred remains you could find on one of the bodies of the kegs that died during the massacre. As for Djura, I think his contact was through his two disciples or whatever they were called. They both utilize powder kegs weapons and wear the armor set so I think they were powder kegs themselves, but after Djura spoke out against the massacre they followed him. They’re likely also how Djura got his stake driver, not because it was sold to him necessarily but because he was friends with two of them. As for other users of powder keg weapons, it’s possible they sold weapons on the side to fund their hunts, or perhaps they sold most of their weapons when they disbanded, I’m not sure about the timeline. But again I don’t think they were primarily merchants because it’s obvious they hunted just like any other workshop
Hey Mitch, do you have any opinions what species the bodies are? The ones you find underground as you climb the ladder from the forbidden forest to Iosefka's clinic. They larger than human and look rather alien. Possibly celestial emissary-like.
Mitch, baby!
:DD
I gained 10 insight after watching this.
Slight plot hole: if the Hunter's Nightmare exists then why does the Hunter of Hunters exist? Unless maybe the Hunter of Hunters is the one who kills them and then they fall into the Hunter's Nightmare.
Xander ????????? I think the Hunters of hunters just go after the ones that have escaped the dream. Everytime you assist Eileen on a hunt, the prey dies. They don't come back. So, I think that they just hunt people who managed to escape the dream with their madness.
That makes sense. However they could have made the covenant a big part of the nightmare to give it some relevance.
I see the Hunter's Nightmare as a kind of Groundhog Day inspired Hell for Blood-Drunk Hunters. And the Hunter of Hunters is a secretive order for assassinating Blood-Drunk Hunters.
Of course, that's the beauty of From's games, everyone has a different experience.
This is kind of a weird coincidence because I JUST started replaying Bloodborne like 2 days ago!
Boom boom booooom now let me hear you say hey oh!
There must be oodles,uh I mean NOODLES for us to share
Cool vid
They could very well be called heretics simply because they refused to hunt any more beasts after they burned down old Yharnam
If a weapon ain t gonna kick it it just ain t worth it that s mine motto to i love using cannon and a gatling those are my favorite left handed weapons i don t use pistols or rifles
How do the previous Pale Blood Hunters remember the dream? Doesn't Gherman state that when receiving the mercy that the dream will be forgotten?
I've always thought that The Power Kegs became misfits after the healing church order them to burn Old Yharnam.
Senpai noticed us :)
