Perfect video for me, I'm planning on replacing my front drums to Cooper S disks and since I'm replacing the back drums I may as well overhaul the cylinders as well.

Cole, The circlip tool expander seems to me to expand the circlip too much! As the cylinder seemed quite lose when it
was in place. I fit the circlip in the grove & use long nose pliers to push it across which works very well, Cheers Dave.

Very good tip, I was really worried about the clip being loose but after getting it installed it really was quite tight. I think it depends on how slowly you install the clip. I cranked it down pretty fast and I think it prevented it from warping it too much. That said I think it could easily make the clip too wide. Thanks for the tip!

The special circlip fitting tool should work very well when fitting the new wheel cylinder. The difficulties in making it work first time may be because you have the clip upside down. The curved edge of the circlip should press against the backplate, not towards the brake pipe.

That’s my favorite valve cover as well. Have the same one 👌🏽

Haha love that you are doing work wearing sandals and we are currently freezing our ass off in the uk

If it makes you feel any better the temp dropped down to the around 32F - 0C these past couple days so the sandals have gone back in the closet. :-)

Great video - I'm noticing that there are many different sizes of wheel cylinders (3/4, 5/8, 1/2, 9/16, even seeing an 11/16 version). Are they marked somewhere on the part? Just trying to determine how these are measured/easily identified so that I can order the same part
Thank you for the great videos.

Never seen a circlip installation tool like it. Totally mangled the clip. Best way is to just chap it on with a drip and same for reverse

My pal has developed stainless slave rear brake cylinders for our minis, at least It's more durable than the steel one, let me know if anyone interested it

Great video, especially on using the circlip tool, but didn't you miss fitting the rubber gater over the handbrake link onto the backplate?

  • @Paul_VanGo

It's mounted correctly, but I still think it's strange that the whole backplate seems to be left to right.
I know the handbrake cable is dictating the position of the backplate, but this results in the cylinder and thus the bleed nipple on the bottom.
Normally, in order to get rid of trapped air in the cylinder, the cylinder should be mounted as high as possible, with the bleed nipple on top.
That's why I mentioned left to right.
99% of all the other cars with drum brakes on the rear have to cylinder on top, with the nipple at the highest point. You can google that, if you like.
But, maybe this has something to do with being British...

Good video, I see you got the cylinder tool I mentioned. Would you recommend it?

I think overall I would. It made things a good bit easier. The only concern I have is what @davejaguar66 mentioned below in another comment. Mine didnt expand too much but I could see the tool spreading out the clip too much and not holding tightly.

MG valve cover .looks like your rear subframe needs painting

Was thinking the same thing. One of the reasons I send all my sub frames in for sandblasting and then powder coating. My first sub frame I did about 8 years ago is still 100% zero rust I take them out every now and then and clean them with properly and inspect for rust. I also replaced all of my mounting bolts with stainless

Hi I have bought brake drums with an inch spacer built in and the studs don’t fit I have purchased some longer ones but was just wondering how you change them? Do I need to buy new drive flanges aswell or could I just change them?
    Thanks

    • @classicminidiy
      @classicminidiy  5 років тому

Take a hammer and give the old ones a wack. They are held in via pressure so the flange will need to come off the car, wack the old studs out and then wack the new ones in. 👍🏼

You put the shoes on the wrong way. The one on the right side should be the other way up. The shoes have a leading edge and a trailing edge.
