Thank you Yuan Michael Chong from China, living in Staten island, NY. It's so nice to have students like you in our country. I'm sure your country is very proud of you.
I don't think they need to - one of the few things I respect about the US army is that they don't need annual huge military parades to prove the strength of their armed forces (as Russia and China do) - the strength of their military forces goes without question.
You must be a high-speed low-drag JROTC operator. It's okay, just keep telling everyone you're going to go SF when you graduate. I'm sure your gnarly drill and ceremonies will just blow the minds of everyone in the real military.
The US does not need to show off its military as other nations. We are that comfortable of our superiority. We celebrate our nation, we do not use it as an excuse to show our low self esteem and use it as a tool of propagande. A smiling President and great marching band, just the best in life...
You're right. They're trained to be the best at the task put in front of them. Marching around is considered a waste of time to many men/women in the Armed Forces. Just remember, that their are specifically trained men to conduct ceremonies.
For all those who knock at how the US marches in parades ... we don't march like they do in Russia or China or North Korea because they are nothing more then nationalistic, fascist demonstrations of state power (especially when they display squadrons of tanks and ICBMs). Second, the US military practices what is known as quiet professionalism. No need to thump your chest because only insecure and weak nations do that. And finally, America puts its money in combat readiness, no choreographed marches every year. Anyone can goose-step, but can anyone fight effectively like Americans?
I'm not saying they should all goosestep but.. we're a nation with a proud history & a number of triumphs & breakthroughs to our credit. This nation owes its very existence to the toughness, skill & discipline of it's soldiers., even. The march that they do should at least reflect that history & the fundamentals that made it so. That's one thing many people don't bother realizing about marches elsewhere: They're not displaying a power so much as exhibiting their part of their nation's story.
The order is: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard. Further broken down to Cadets/Midshipmen, Active Duty, National Guard, Reserve, Training Units The parade probably followed a different order, seeing as the Army delegation was a single unit, followed by the Punahou School's marching band.
US Army "A" Uniform used to be quite sober, but this new one, with this abundance of laces, stripes, embroidered patterns and shoulder boards looks a little baroque.
The president doesn't have an official uniform. In the military, you're not supposed to salute when out of uniform, but the president usually salutes at parades like these and when saluted by military personnel.
But the heart you put into doing one thing is a reflection of the heart you put into everything. The British march and fight better than us, for example.
The guys with the slack rifle is from West Point by the look of it. Remember, these still college kids and havn't spent a real day in the army yet. Also, the US Army isn't about being flash. Our marching style is set up deliberately to reflect that. We also don't do alot of Drill & Ceremonies practice until it is required to perform a ceremony. We have other things to do.
I'm sure they were somewhere in this parade but the regiment is less than 2k soldiers. IT would be a short parade so they called in regular troops to fill it out and give everyone a chance to participate.
This isn't meant to show off our military might. If it were the entire street would be filled with soldiers showing off their machine guns while artillery and tanks would be driving behind and maybe infront of the soldiers.
@spudnick3490 I agree that the Soviets were the decisive factor in the defeat of Germany, but you cannot overlook the contribution of America. And I'm not only talking about its military campaigns during the war. America's industrial capacity provided support to countless nations (even a little bit to the Soviets under Lend-Lease). Could the US, USSR, or any country have won this war on its own? The simple answer is "no".
@spudnick3490 You correctly identify that the defeat of Japan was a joint effort, however, the capture of those "unguarded" islands was an important US contribution, as they denied the acquisition of resources which Japan needed to continue its military effort. And the taking of such Islands required tremendous naval power, and naval power is born of industrial power-- which was the strongest trait of America in WWII.
@KokeJr yea man i feel ya. i am an american and i wish we would have an official military parade, but unfortunately it is a sign or symbole of some sort of imperialism or monarchy of some sort, but anyway maybe in the future there will be one, and may i ask what country your from?
@spudnick3490 The US gave allied countries war material when WW2 broke out. So no, we didn't act isolationist until being attacked, we just didn't send troops.

Sorry Duke, but the march pays tribute to its soldiers and the band is mindful of thye well-being of students. That's how most Americans think, but not you.
And in all honesty, i think our military is a lot more active with operations. They don't have much time to march around like GI Joe. :P Though, it is nice to see a nice march by our men and women. Especially with important ceremonies like the Veteran's Day stuff.
@TennVol92 Well is because that isn't US military style. I mean showing Tanks, APC, IFV, AIFV, MRAP, SPAAG, Self Propelled Artillery, Towed Artillery, Flying military aircraft over, & other war machines is Russian, Chinese, & other nation military parade style.
@KIMxJUNGxIL not only that because the americans mostly train the military to fight. Russia and china mostly train thair military to do parades. They use 75% of their training for parades. We r at our forts and military bases conducting drills excersizing 24/7 training to jump out of helichopters and repelling off the mountain moving in like ghosts. Would be cool to see, but to my knowledge, the US has never held a big parade with major military hardware. Maybe the local NG unit drives a vintage 2.5 ton truck or a jeep in parades, but that is about the most you'll see. I must agree with you here. I like to watch those "Big brainwashed machine" parades. hehe. The precision and skill that go into some of them is amazing.
