You’re really underselling that pitch by W. It wasn’t just “a baseball game.” It was the game 1 of the 2001 World Series, which was IN New York, barely a month after 9/11. W was wearing a bulletproof vest under his jacket. One of the umpires on the field was actually a secret service agent. He knew he had to nail that pitch or they’d boo him. So he practiced it beforehand and he threw an absolutely beautiful pitch. So much symbolism and meaning behind that moment. And I wouldn’t have ever voted for the guy.
Same here. Boston guy who never liked Bush but had nothing but respect for him during this time. Yankee stadium that night was probably 70-30 Dems that night as well but they weren't thinking about "politics."
Never voted for GW and came to loathe him by the end of his 8 yearsm but when it came to the people, in critical moments, he always said the right things. For example, after the towers fell and he was talking to the workers, one of them said "We cant hear you!!!!". He replied, "I can hear you, the rest of the world hears you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear from ALL of us soon!". That was completely off the cuff.....and It's fucking legendary. Those kind of things are what brought us together, as a nation, after 9/11.

A small moment was when Republican Richard Riordan won the mayorship of Los Angeles in the aftermath of the LA riots. He had an Asian opponent who was more politically experienced and just hammered Riordan in the debate. As a fellow Asian left of center, it made me uncomfortable. In Riordan's acceptance speech, he said with the utmost sincerity he would welcome Democrats, Republicans, independents, people of every race, creed, color and sexual orientation to his administration. I'm not from LA but it was another wholesome moment that resonated with me.
THAT is how politics are supposed to be ran: you might not agree with the opponent or the person across the aisle but you can treat one another with dignity and respect. You are there to serve the people, not combat and mudsling one another. Having two parties should bring out debate and arguments, so that compromise for the good of both can be met. But it can be done civilly
I disagreed John Mccain politically but always respected him and was proud that we were from the same state. I watched his funeral procession on television with my grandparents and my grandpa cried.
to add, there's really only so much that we can convey with only text, we throw away a basic politeness to shout rudely into each other's faces, and there is really only so much to convey with only our memes
The problem with this is, Trump is a big proponent of the hostility we are currently seeing in politics, not just in America, but around the western world. He verbally attacks opponents, spread lies about Obama being born in Kenya, demanding Clinton be put in jail, refusing to concede defeat, and turning against Pence overnight because he refused to say the 2020 election was stolen. He has made some pretty misogynistic comments over the years also, which kind of flies in the face of his tribute to the female representatives in this video. I'm not saying he is the only politician to engage in this sort of behaviour, because he certainly is not. But he has certainly stoked it and emboldened his supporters to behave in the same way. We need to return to an era where political debates focused solely on the political issues, rather than the people and their families. And an era where opposing leaders respectfully disagreed with each other, but never resorted to personal insults. And above all, America needs to remember that the peaceful transfer of power is one of the crowning achievements of any civilised nation! Unfortunately I can't see these things returning anytime soon, especially if Trump wins the GOP nomination next year, which he looks almost certain to do so.
One thing I will say about Boehner,at least he tried to hold the line against the furthest fringes of the Right in Congress. He was the last Republican Speaker that actually believed the GOP and Democratic Party could unify as they did in the early to mid 2000s,unlike Paul Ryan who pretty much let the Freedom Caucus and later MAGA caucus have free reign of the lower chamber
MAGA movement started with Pat Buchanan. Everyone laughed at him, he was racist, sexist, holocaust denialist. But his ideals sadly prevailed over the GOP
Yeah, he was a RINO. That is why we have the problems we have. Why don't Democrats give a little, too? Oh, that's right. You only like it when it is Republicans who are conciliatory.

11:25 I think your missing the most important context of that pitch. This was in the World Series in New York City that took place in early October 2001 Baseball became somewhat of a show of patriotism after 9/11, since it was still in season and already held a deep-rooted history with America over any other country. When baseball resumed a just a few days after the attacks, it was a major show of American perseverance and refusal to let the attacks hold power over them. Then in what seems like a plot to a cheesy B-movie, less than a month later, who else is playing in the World Series in 2001 than the New York Yankees. Games 1 & 2 were in Arizona, so Bush’s pitch at Game 3 was the first WS game in New York less than 1 month after 9/11. Watching the President walk out onto that field was a moment of pride and unity all across America. And that dude threw a perfect strike. Legendary moment in sports.
Boston Red Sox won that series, along with the New England Patriots (both had been on a loosing streak since as far back as I could remember- born ‘66 in Boston - that was just unreal to us - 9/11 & Massachusetts the start of the American Revolution)
This is an amazing video. I disagree with everything Trump stands for, but that moment at 2:34 was very touching and I wish he would act like that more often, like Bush, Romney, and McCain did, instead of trying to benefit from dividing us
Are you kidding? No one has divided this country the way Bush and Obama did. That's the entire reason Trump even became President. If they hadn't destroyed this country from the inside, Trump firstly wouldn't have ran and even if he did, he wouldn't have won even the nomination.
He was very reasonable during an interview in 9/11. I believe that if he just stayed that way instead of the persona he is today, I think many people, including myself, would come to respecto him more
I know Boehner is a cryer, but I legitimately got a little emotional watching him tear up while the Pope spoke. I can’t help but believe that he is simultaneously proud and humbled.
John McCain was a real patriot. His Father was an admiral that commanded the final surge on Japan's motherland to end World War two. His Grandfather was also admiral. The entire family defended this country's colors. He answered the call to serve this country. You can agree or disagree with his politics, but you can't deny he loved the USA.
More of these please :) Us here in the US are tired of the radicals and the fighting. Yeah, the left and right don't agree on pretty much everything, but we're all still human and neighbors, and sometimes we have each other's backs cause we're neighbors and we care about each other regardless of the politics.
To all the younglings watching this. The clip of George W. Bush throwing the pitch at 11:30 was shortly after the 9/11 terror attacks. The importance of a president throwing a clean pitch might seem frivolous, but it was what we needed more than anything.

Baseball became somewhat of a show of patriotism after 9/11, since it was still in season and already held a deep-rooted history with America over any other country.
