  • Who was the mysterious girl with the green eyes? Where did she come from and what explains her unique abilities? This video follows the clues and gives a couple of theories based on repeated viewings and the script.
The Ninth Gate (1999) was co-written, produced, and directed by Roman Polanski and starred Johnny Depp as Dean Corso. The Girl was played by Emmanuelle Seigner. The film is loosely based upon Arturo Pérez-Reverte's 1993 novel The Club Dumas.

It really is. I guess it is the slow pace, artistic style and the vagueness (not giving any straight answers; leaving a lot to interpretation) that puts off a lot people. I always enjoyed the occult themes, the detective work and the mystical aspects that could be the work of a devil, a figment of imagination or the mark of insanity,

"The Devil in love". In the last engraving the woman points to а big radiant 8-pointed star, which the camera then focuses on - 'The Star of Ishtar', "the queen of heaven" and “the Mother of harlots”, aka Inanna, aka Venus-Aphrodite, or Lucifer himself. She's the Ninth Gate that Corso entered (literally) through their final ritual sex-ride. (btw, Lilith is believed to prefer the on-top position, it's a kinda big deal for her).
Edit. People here keep asking about her socks of different colors. IMO, this is clearly a subtle nod to the old belief that the devil incarnate humans or animals stand out in having eyes of different colors, or androgyny, or some other visible unnatural dichotomy (think of jester's bi-color dress). And her green 'reptilian' eyes could refer to the 'golden' eyes of THE Serpent (Corso was hypnotized by them like a rabbit by the eyes of a snake). In short, unlike the book, where the girl is depicted as some kind of a modest, "low rank" guardian demon, Polanski, in the Hollywood style, made her the Devil himself (as I see it, since you're making a film about summoning the Devil, then you better have the Devil in it.)
But y'all guys miss out, that the real mystery of the story isn't the girl's true identity, which seems pretty clear, but it's Corso himself, as other commenters also have noticed. Polanski, in his promo interview, even "admitted" that he meant to portray the girl as the Devil, cause it's not really a 'spoiler', as it doesn't ruin THE mystery, nor answers the real question. Whether the girl is the Whore of Babylon, or Lilith, or Lucifer, or even all of them at once, give or take, it really isn't the point, as it's irrelevant to the actual moral message of the story (and Polanski's films usually have one). Her identity is a 'secondary' puzzle or the author's false lead, the bait for the audience, as in the end all we get (and need) to know for sure is that she's the embodiment of the Ninth Gate, and that Corso - for some reason - got LCF's direct help in his quest... But why did he, why him? It's Corso, "the runner", who's the biggest puzzle in the film. Maybe it's covered in more detail in the book, though I doubt it, cause it seems to be the key question of the story - why did it have to be Corso? What was it about this supposedly pretty ordinary, pretty cynical, down-to-earth kinda guy that is so “special”, that made the Devil himself (herself) fall in love with him? This question is one of those things that give the film that captivating and mysterious taste, as it leaves us with the 'WTF it was all about?!' feeling, even 20 years after. Cause it's clearly about something, "something" that most of us, me included, seem to be missing out. Maybe the answer lies in the original Jacques Cazotte's "The Devil in Love" book, has anyone read it? Does it answer the question, what made the Devil fall in love with a human? Anyway, while I was writing, this video reached 666 likes; I think I should stop now.

The movie depicts more of AC/thelema/occult's portrayal of the whore of Babylon. In Revelation, she is portrayed in an apocalyptic manner that will be destroyed by the beast in the end. The movie follows her portrayal as the passage to the stone/pyramid's city as described in AC's Thelema. By her sleeping with the beast, the beast can successfully cross the Abbys to the other side. The closest literary analogy to the Ninth Gate is Dante's Divine Comedy. The character Corso is put on a quest to find the book by Balkin who has been seeking communion (union) with Satan for many years and has realized the book is the path to this communion. The girl's chair at Balkin's lecture is off-angle compared to the other participants to portray or convey she and Hell are not "aligned" with Balkin but will use him to get to Corso.
However, the ancient members of the Fallen are not deceived and know Balkin's true objective is power, not union or communion with Satan. This is also true of Ms. Telfer who wants the book to remain the head of her "coven". In Liana Telfer's case, it is enhancement her powers of seduction and sensuality not union with Satan she seeks. Baroness Kessler tells Corso this during his visit to her office/library. Balkin hypocritically accuses Liana Telfer of this as well before he murders her.
The girl is MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT which is why throughout the film her hands are covered (mystery), and who like Virgil in the Divine Comedy, leads Corso (Dante) through the levels (gates) of perdition. This is confirmed when it's her face Corso recognizes in the true ninth image; the final "gate".
Corso returns to the book store only to find the "twins" are gone and the real owners of the book store are dismantling it. And as they remove the bookcase the true ninth image falls from the top, flutters down to rest at Corso's feet. The final scene is Corso reaching and entering the Ninth Gate having used the image as his guide.
Corso's Quest For The "Unholy Trinity"
The girl was NOT accidentally hit during the struggle between Corso and Bruno, nothing in the Ninth Gate involving "the girl" happens accidentally. The spilling of "the girl's" blood was necessary so she could mark Corso with three (3) lines; a "baptism" with one of the alternate signs of the unholy trinity.
There are three individuals seeking the Ninth Gate To The Kingdom Of Shadows; Balkin, Telfer and Corso. Only one of them is "genuine"; Corso. Corso discovers and then seeks to find the three (3) original drawing done by Satan for the book. This unholy trinity is is also repeated in their being three (3) copies of the book but only one original. The numbers three (3) and nine (9) are primes, roots, and squares of each other.

Roman Polanski's The Ninth Gate is neo-noir horror and mystery film combined. There are segments of the film consuming public who seek a more cerebral experience requiring multiple viewings, thought and discussion. From my perspective, this is what makes "art" both personal and universal. People can share their individual perceptions, reactions and questions.
This does NOT make the film unapproachable, but it should be known its good thing if you don't understand everything or are confused at the end of the film.
But for me this makes the film a conversation starter and in my experience it also is a great first date experience. Its more than violence, special effects and superficial salacious sex.

The Book of Nine Gates To The Kingdom of Shadows which is the central prop in the movie was written to provide a proselyte like Caruso a guide to communion with Satan. Satan's ultimate goal is the overthrow God's plan to redeem humankind from their spiritual heritage of original sin as the descendants of Adam and Eve.
      So there are two mutually exclusive and competing plans for the souls of human beings. The climax of this competition is discussed, symbolically and allegorically, in the Book of Revelation in the Holy Bible. One of these demons is the Whore of Babylon who is described in Revelations as sitting on the back of a beast and is described as follows;
"Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and Abominations of the Earth". I was using this description.

In my opinion the movie was about Corso's journey into enlightenment(the Luciferian kind of enlightenment in this case). He was individualistic in the movie and also a greedy opportunist as seen when he was buying the Don Quixote books for cheap and then resold them for a high profit. The whole thing from the get go for him was about individual pursuit; he wasn't interested in the society. After watching this movie many many times I think the movie gives a hint about the misterious girl... She appears right in the moment when Balkin speaks "A witch is a person who, though cognizant of the laws of God endeavors to act through the medium of a pact with the devil..."
So my view is that she was a witch that has made a pact with the devil to gain immortality and got assigned the task of being the guardian of that book (and the ninth gate secret). I think she's at Balkin lecture because at that point, Balkin has the book... Later, Corso leaves the book with Bernie, then she appears again to prevent Liana's boyfriend to steal the book.
I have a theory that once Bernie saw her and her super powers, he gets "enchanted" to take his own life... and not only that, he is found dead by Corso in a position just like one of the engravings.
Same for Liana's husband that committed suicide... I think she must have appeared to him at some point and he decides to take his own life.

If the 9th Engraving is anything to go by, she's Our Lady Babalon, for which you'll have to study Crowley. The correct translation of the Latin title of Torchia's book is "OUT of the realm of shadows Nine Gates" or "Nine Gates OUT of the realm of Shadows." Where we live is the realm of shadows. Lucifer is a creature of light and his name even means "light bringer" . Because of the forgery of the last engraving, Balkan was there at night, so his quest failed. Lucifer is associated with the dawn. When Corso went to the castle at dawn, the final gate out of the land of shadow was opened for him into the Realm of Light.

@@mutabore7 Lucifer is the morning star. This is all about understanding his mythology. . Looking at the movie, Balkan tried his ritual at night and failed. Corso after finding the correct final engraving went at dawn. With the rising sun behind the castle, the Ninth Gate, the gate lit up and opened for him.
      From Wikipedia. In classical mythology
Lucifer (the morning star) represented as a winged child pouring light from a jar. Engraving by G. H. Frezza, 1704
In classical mythology, Lucifer ("light-bringer" in Latin) was the name of the planet Venus, though it was often personified as a male figure bearing a torch. The Greek name for this planet was variously Phosphoros (also meaning "light-bringer") or Heosphoros (meaning "dawn-bringer").[25] Lucifer was said to be "the fabled son of Aurora[26] and Cephalus, and father of Ceyx". He was often presented in poetry as heralding the dawn.[25]

It would not have made any sense to go through all that trouble to get into the realm of shadows/darkness.
The Dumas Club book it is based on also hints that Corso literally might no longer be fully human at the end (he no longer casts a shadow), alternatively it could be a metaphor for his newly achieved enlightment.

  • @0That_Guy0

I think the movie is very interesting. But I believe a lot of people overthink this aspect of the movie.
As far as movie clues go, I believe it points towards her being the Devil. Corso was literally walking through the ritual through the movie, just listen to Balkan reading the "riddle" at the end. Corso did all of these things, all that was left was the last page which she basically handed to him. Obviously he'd trigger the Devil's interest by starting the ritual (unaware), and didn't back down even when faced with mortal danger.
Only question left for me would be; "why help Corso?". The ritual was meant to summon the Devil and open the Ninth Gate; that would perhaps simply mean to finally open the path for the Devil to bring about the Antichrist. She did after all ride him at the end; perhaps he turned into the suitable mate by going through the ritual? But it's all speculation at this point, I fear we'll never know the answers to this movie.

I suspect that Lucifer has long tired of being cut off from the world. He conspired through intermediaries with Torchia to create a mystical scavenger hunt to create a 9 part key to opening a door to the terrestrial plane. Whether it is a way into hell or a way out is the unasked question, tho the end confirms it is at least the former. The 9 parts, sprinked in 3 places, are quickly scattered and Torchia is immolated by the Church. Over hundreds of years the books descend into legend and the puzzle is dismissed as "mumbo jumbo." Lucifer, disappointed that his keys have descended into unworthy hands, conspires to shepherd a worthy acolyte *Corso" to solve the riddle. His agents on earth, the imp twin Ceniza "brothers," and his green eyed "gatekeeper" help discard the unworthy pretenders and smooth Corso's way to his unholy welcome. One can almost envision him being greeted by Al Pacino.

It doesn't matter what or who she is. Ambiguity in film and literature is always best. The audience love a mystery and to fill in the blanks with their imagination. It's like the showbiz say "Always leave them wanting more". If they explain everything there will always be a percentage of the audience that will feel let down. Some will disagree with the explanation and others won't mind or even like it, but they then lose that mystery that might make them return to the film.
Is magic as fun to view when you know how it's done?

Green Eyes is the personificaion of the Devil on Earth, or at least his personally-appointed emissary. She is elusive ("what's your name?" "guess"), she is a student and observer of humanity, has a bit of a sense of humor (reading "how to win friends and influence people"), and is also a bit of a trickster (her socks are mismatched, as a jester's would be). We never see her interact with any character in the movie except Dean. Well, okay, except for when she drives off Leana's companion, but even then she does not speak to him.

I like the title mother of dragons. Dragons usually protect thinks like gold and jewels for centuries untill someone worth it comes along.
Here she is clearly the scarlet woman who represents the temptation of , power , sex , riches etc that men have fallen prey to for ages. And yes , they were falling prey to such things from before Babylon to the church. Which is where most interpret her as the scarlet women . I don't like usually the phrase whore of Babylon that may have been a negative term attached by those who were against the ancient goddess cults considered pagan.
I use the term scarlet woman.

Book of Revelation speaks about Harlot of Babylon (HoB). Not Lilith. As far as I am aware there is no similarity between the two in Christian tradition. In the movie the only time she could be paralleled with the HoB is the last (and long time lost) picture form the book. However, she retains some appearance from the original book by Perez-Reverte. Namely cheap boots, different color socks, travelling by cheap trains. In case you have not read the original novel, Perez-Reverte perfectly and completely explains her appearance, her addition to Corso and the likes of him as well as emotional and casual reasons for their relationship. She is one of the lowest ranking angels, who rebelled against God because she trusted her commander and was expelled from heaven. She is poor and spends her time for learning and getting along with people, who are smart, brave and bond by superior sense of duty, akin to true soldiers. It is really a sad story by strange spiritual union of demon and human, who both lost their chance to redemption in this life. The only difference is that Corso, being human, has a chance at least after the Judgement Day (shown in the book describing his night dream). BTW she can not tell her name because tradition states, that demons become vulnerable to those, who know their name.
Polanski mixed things up in order to make film more intriguing but in my opinion Green Eyes character remains unfinished. The movie became much simpler, than message by Perez-Reverte and more concentrated on occultism. So she became more enigmatic, but also less interesting.

I don't believe she was the Devil, a witch, or Lilith. I think this video gets it right - she's "Mystery, Babylon the Great, Mother of Harlots and Abominations of the Earth" more commonly known as "The Whore of Babylon" from Revelation. However, I think they combined some aspects of the 3 beasts of Revelation, which were the dragon (the Devil), the sea beast (the Antichrist), and the scarlet beast (ridden by the Harlot). The scarlet beast was subordiante to the Harlot, so she was essentially the 3rd beast herself. However, it was the sea beast (Antichrist) that "marked the foreheads of his followers" like the girl did to Corso. But, only one of the beasts of Revelation had a rider, and the film made the final reveal in the true etching - she's the Harlot or the Whore of Bablylon.
The Harlot was symbolic of "the great city which reigneth over the kings of the Earth", which is interpreted as civilization or the capitol cities of biblical times, as they were each associatied with particular sins that would lead us to armegeddon. She also represents what various branches of the church get wrong about traditional Christianity. In the film, she has a forgery made (or at least knows about) the final etching, and just like various denominations deviate from the word of God, Balken gets that last important part wrong.

Actually, her eyes are more angelic than demonic. She is an immortal guardian like a daemon or angel. Daemons are watchers in ancient (particularly Greek) mythology. They were known to have contact with humans, yes even sexually. Interestingly, seraphim are described as firey immortal beings. They as well as others of the angelic realm can often appear in unnerving form.

    • @soloharmonicsrobj8246
      @soloharmonicsrobj8246 Рік тому

@Lamar HOP To answer your question, that depends on the religion. For example, in Judaism and old testament (Greek/Hebrew) the answer would be yes. However in other cultures and beliefs (such as paganism or tribal) that answer may depend on one's chosen path! The word demon originates from the Greek word daemon. Judaism and Christianity demonized (declared evil) many ancient demigods and goddesses of other cultures. For example, Lilith is considered Adam's first wife (Zohar/Alpha bin Sira text) before Eve. Lilith became the consort to the angel of death Samael, demonized by Judaism as the queen of the succubi (daemon). Lilith is revered as a goddess aspect in ancient/pagan lore. Lilith is not mentioned by name in the Bible. However there is a passage in the old testament that describes her characteristics. I can't remember exactly what book but that's according to certain scholars who interpret the ancient texts.

@@Dimitrije_Sukovic The practice of Satanism is only mentioned by Leanna Telfer (whom was the Priestess) and Baroness Kessler (the disabled author). The "girl" is a mystery that keeps one guessing. In ancient practices, sexuality (carnal knowledge) was the primary way for a mortal being to reach enlightenment. This explains that erotic scene between Corso and the girl. These ancient pagan practices were labeled Satanic after the first Catholic church was formed around the 11th century.
