- Exploring the meanings behind each of the 9 engravings.
The Ninth Gate (1999) was co-written, produced, and directed by Roman Polanski and starred Johnny Depp as Dean Corso. The film is loosely based upon Arturo Pérez-Reverte's 1993 novel The Club Dumas.

If you've watched this movie a million times and still feel like you're missing... That THING, that will tie it all together for you, for example, why, even though Balkan knew much more about sorcery and the rituals than Corso was Corso able to access the 9th gate and Balkan was not? Then read carefully, here it is:
It is because Balkan saw the engravings only as instructions to a ritual instead of actual gates located in the physical world that one must pass through. The movie is about Corso passing through each of the 8 gates throughout his adventure and only then is the 9th gate finally revealed. It's the whole "the journey is the destination," thing. Balkan thought that he could pay his way through, but what he failed to understand is that passage through the gates cannot be bought: it is a journey you must walk for yourself, saying "yes," to the devil each time along the way.
i really like your "journey" theory here. what just doesn't add up in your theory is "saying yes" each step of the way. unless, not shown on-screen, Corso was the one killing the people in each gate!? he definitely was the last person those dead people saw when they were alive.
Also Corso didn't seem all that motivated to find the gate itself. so why in the end did he enter? might've missed his turning point.
@@ThreeEyedJuan Ive always wondered why he told Balkan at the castle that he, Corso, was the only apparition Balkan would see that night when as far as Corso knew all the pages were authentic. Did he think Balkan was doing the ritual incorrectly or was he just trying to psyche Balkan out of succeeding? Obviously at that point Corso fully believed a supernatural experience was possible with the book or he wouldntve pulled the gun and demanded the pages so he wasnt dismissing Balkan's belief in the supernatural by saying it wouldnt work. An aside: I hope everyone noticed during the opening credits that the camera took us thru 9 gates after entering the space where the book should have been.
Balkan was such an expert but he didnt notice that he was giving his witch talk to an audience of whom one member, The Girl, was the Devil...
@@ThreeEyedJuan That's a scary idea that Corso killed them all.
@alecarter2542 , and, @ThreeEyedJuan, and, @watermelonlalala, you all sound rite to me, however, did yall miss the airplane talk with the girl, who told him she's his protector, and, she also told him that 'he is still playing the game, and, it's over for, Balkan, before his death?, also, how is it possible Corso never sees any of her supernatural abilities, I just stumbled on to this movie, I've always wanted to see it, but.... I'm here for #BarbaraJefford 🥰 🎭 #LustForAvampire1971? 💖 aka Baroness Kessler 😍 I wish I could have met her, she was an exquisite beauty 👄❤️🔥💯 Rest Easy Angel 💐🙏😇
This movie is so underrated. It basically got tossed to the wayside as just another "mainstream-thriller-suspense-mystery-horror" movie back in 1999, but it did create a huge cult following over the last 22 years now, and not just die-hard Polanski fans either. Your analysis of this well-written story is spot-on. Good job.
yes. i am a huge follower and dont care about Polanski's other films. I have analyzed every scene and engraving. one of the best movies ever.
Finally got round to it after my dad watched it and said it’s good and it is indeed.
One of my favourite movies of all time, despite the bad critics. I especially love Frank Langellas performance. He's the secret star of the movie.
I recall it getting lost in the shuffle of the post-‘Devils Advocate’ satanic apocalypse movie fad of the late 90s. You had this, Stigmata and End of Days all coming out around the same time.
@@johansmallberries9874 Yeah. I do recall the same.
Ten years later and I’m still discovering new things from this movie. Nice work man
There is indeed something about this movie that transcends simple movie-making. The movie is a Pure Esoteric journey. most of the key people or even places cant be seen as entirely physical. Every key place Corso visits represents a Gate in itself. if you pay close attention to the Indian Taxi driver his lips don't move while he speaks. the Ceniza bros or the old man are the same faces as the characters drawn in the book, same as the girl they are not human. but seen from a simple perspective as the devil is evil and the god is not everyone will get lost. Overall the idea is simple Ballcan doesn't go the Full Journey himself. Even though he kills Fargas and barones to get their pair of images he doesn't enter the Ceniza gate. He makes Corso do it, therefore Corso becomes the Journeyman overcoming every obstacle and cross the Abyss.
Check out angel heart you'll thank me later
I've been to that same street where the scaffolding falls/ Hermanos Ceniza Shop is.
This is fantastic and it makes sense. See the theories before stated that it also didnt work for Balkin because he was more 'materialistic' than Corso, which is not right. I dont think materialism has anything to do with it. Your theory seems right in that it was corso who did the journey and not Balkin, so the whore of babylon attached to him.

Good to see I am not the only 9th Gate addicted person (who is sitting for hours behind Google Earth and seeks for the Filmlocations- btw the portugese Bookshop is a garage now :/ )
You just gave me an idea for my next trip to plan: visit all the main location in the movie, if posible in order. I love this movie. . Something to look forward.
I was lucky enough to live in Paris for 6 months on a work placement and went to see some of the places. I saw the cafe he spends the whole day hiding from the albino and the place on the river Sienne where she floats down to save Corso. Would love to have seen the castle from the ending but I think it's really far south almost on the Spanish border.
I live near the castle if you want pics/vids

Jim: the Château de Puivert
The Ninth Gate was filmed at the Parisian Hotel Cayre and the Château de Ferrieres near Paris. Balkan raises the devil in the Château de Puivert, the castle where the Catholic Church began the crusades against the Cathars, the heretics of the South of France.
I have always felt that the real keys in this movie are the translations of the text for the pictures and the order in which they are revealed. The engraving we see when Corso is visiting the Baroness for the second time is "victa jacet virtus", or "overcome by the power of lies". Given the overall subject matter, that translation seems accurate. Another is "clausae patent" which seems to be something along the lines of "it is both open and closed", like the door to Bernie's shop, where the sign says "closed" but the door is still unlocked. I have seen other vidoes which give incorrect or misleading translations.
Also, the order in which they are presented is key. Balkan's attempt at the ritual shows him arranging the engravings in the order 1, 4, 3, 6, 7, 5, 8, 2, 9, but the movie shows us the engravings in this alternate order 1, 8, 9 (forgery), 5, 6, 3, 2, 4, 7, then 9 again (the real one)--*this* should be the order in which the engravings are laid out for the ritual, along with proper understanding of their translations. In this order, for example, 1, 8, 5, 6 or "silentium est auream", "victa jacet virtus", "frustra ", and "ditesco mori" becomes "silence is golden. overcome by the power of lies, in vain, I enrich myself with death". Balkan, like all the others, is a fool--this ritual is not about immortality or worldly wealth, but *real* wealth, as descibed in the text of the 9th engraving, "nunc scio tenebris lux"--now I also know the light (knowledge) of the dark.
I watch this movie at least once each year. It was about time to watch it again, anyway, so I know what I am doing this weekend.
have you read the book......the one by Perez Reverte?
@@David-og7di I bought it instantly after the 1 st view. Amazing
this is brilliant!
About the engraving with the old man holding the two keys: The older man working in the french hotel that was bribed by Corso to find a free room, he had two crossed keys on both sides of his jacket.
Yeah, I noticed that too
I was about to write about this. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed. I doubt that's a coincidence.
It annoys me that Corso never pressed the girl for a name. Cause I'm sure she is Lucifer (LCF)
nice catch mate
@@Anonassassin she's not, she's the ninth gate in order to achieve LCF
Balkan never had a chance of meeting LCF. . . .Corso was the only one who actually experienced the 9 gates, as he read / realized each engraving. . .Corso was the one who discovered the keys and passed the tests. . . Balkan was doomed from the start.
Exactly this! Experiencing the journey itself is the only way through all the nine gates. Though it is never clear if Corso ever understands this? If so, it is also a matter of Pride not to tell that vital information to Balkan.
in addition, Corso the one that gain the preference of the whore of babylon, sonce the begginig she is disaligned (scene of the chair) to balkan
Balkan was wanting to rush ahead to tbe front of the line through murder and greed. Corso stayed more true to the "path" of learning, which the Devil wanted him to do. Balkan's passion for the Devil was driven by greed. Corso's passion was driven by knowledge. Even the Devil has standards, as Corso never tried to kill for becoming the level of Satan, he merely attempted to gain it through learning and respected that. Balkan didn't respect this, and died as a result.
Balkan is more like a gate, just used as a follower to carve the path
Remember how we meet the girl. She is actually at Balkan's presentation about the occult. I've always thought the devil was there because of this thinking "You were so close Boris...so close"
The story also takes "9" souls. Corso's soul is the 9th.
1. Mr. Telfer
2. Bernie
3. Victor Fargas
4. The Baroness
5. Liana's Guardian (bodyguard)
6. Liana
7. Boris Balkin
8. Aristide de Torqio
9. Dean Corso

@Bouja Strook Unfortunately not. Both the Nine Gates and the book upon which it was based, the Delomelanicon (the one allegedly written by Lucifer on which the "true" engravings are based) were invented by Arturo Perez Reverte, the author of El Club Dumas (the novel adapted by the movie). The concept behind the Delomelanicon itself was inspired by the Necronomicon, a fictional grimoire invented by HP Lovecraft that appears in many of his works (there have been numerous attempts to write and publish the work for real, all of which are listed here if you're interested: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Necronomicon). The aesthetic of the Nine Gates, meanwhile, was based on the 1499 book Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, an anonymous work (though certain theories attribute it either to Leon Alberti or even Lorenzo de Medici- though the most likely author was Francesco Colonna- while the illustrations have sometimes been attributed to Botticelli) in the medieval Romance genre following a young man on a quest to be reunited with his lover which takes him through a heavily allegorical dream world.
There is a version of the Nine Gates that was actually written and which you can buy (www.amazon.es/Delomelanicon-Novem-Portis-Dark-Angel/dp/1387300237) but it's of very poor quality and clearly an amateur publication (I used to have an eBook version translated into Spanish). So to sum up, no the book is not real even though a version of it was written inspired by Perez Reverte's book/Polanski's movie. If you're interested in that sort of thing, however, I can recommend a number of real grimoires (real inasmuch as they are historically authentic; whether they actually work or not I'll leave up to the individual's beliefs). Even if like me you are highly sceptical of the supernatural, they make for a fascinating read.
The Sefer Raziel HaMalakh is one of the oldest complete grimoires still widely available (dating from the 13th century, though many parts are thought to be older). Likewise the Picatrix (a 13th century Latin translation of the 11th century Ghāyat al-Ḥakīm), and the (probably) 13th century Sworn Book of Honorious (not to be confused with the Grimoire of Pope Honorious, a 17th or 18th century forgery- which also makes for an interesting read, by the way). Moving forward a bit we have the 15th century Key of Solomon (not to be confused with the 17th century Lesser Key of Solomon), and the 16th century Three Books on Occult Philosophy by Agrippa, which are absolutely essential reading for any student of the occult (there is a fourth book as well, but that one is a forgery). Both the aforementioned Lesser Key of Solomon and the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum are useful reference texts since they list in great detail the various ranks of demons that appear in most "mainstream" philosophies of the occult. The 17th century Book of Abramelin is also worthy of mention. Moving still further forward we have the Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, copies of which first emerged in the 18th century (though they claimed to be based on texts written by Moses himself). Finally, for an example of a highly successful modern grimoire we must look to Gerald Gardner's Book of Shadows (first distributed in the early 1950s), the text on which the modern Wiccan religion is based.
Of course this list is a very vague overview listing only some of the most well-known titles (many of which have nothing to do with each other thematically). But it does serve as a useful overview for anyone interested in delving into the study of grimoires in general.
I would offer a second opinion on only 1 point. I think the 2 playing chess were Baroness Kellser and Corso. Her library floor is a chess board.
That is how I always viewed it. He was able to get past her defensive moves and she resigned (gave him permission to examine her copy when she said she was impressed by his idea). The lady at the front desk was a pawn that let him enter, and her assistant stood upright and walked in a rigid straight line like a rook.
If Corso is a beast as you put it then she quite literally “rode” the beast lol
Well.. he only had 2 heads not seven.
never realized the parallels to the real world.
great work!
Very good! With the Bruno stairs death scene and the girl/succubus/gate-keeper genuinely impressed & not sure if he had it in him: the film is suggesting to us that Corso is not the first potential suitor/soul that she has attempted to guide/entice/tempt along the path of the Nine Gates in her long position & time on the Earth! Doubtless there have been many others stretching back in time who, like Boris Balkan, failed to fully navigate the path & complete the ritual. Perhaps they were lucky?
The girl (harloth of babylon) was the only one who accepted Corso, he was indeed lucky, Balkan would never been acepted as he didnt complete the other 8 Gates prophecies of the engravings. Every gate had a cost and only Corso completed them. I belive that the Girl disapperances was related on helping other possible candidates, or she was watching others fail and pleasured from their deaths like the telfer woman murder.
I love the way you talk.
It makes you sound detached like a scholar with a hint of mysticism.
It adds to the mood to the ninth gate videos.
Hey, thanks for that. I knew going in I would get hate for my voice (and that's fine). Thanks for supporting independent channels and independent voices (pardon the pun, couldn't resist).
This explanation is PRECISELY what I have come to conclusion on. The Film is a Representation of the 9 gates travelled through by CORSO. He survives and enters the gate, because HE ALONE travelled them accurately and had the correct versions of them. If he did not ever get the last page, he would have never entered. This film has been a favorite of mine since I saw it back in 1999. I have rewatched it many times throughout the years.
The two crossed keys are also on the Uniforms worn by staff at the Hotel in which Corso stays. Well spotted. Those are the events the chosen one (Corso) goes through, although the film would have benefitted from an epiphany moment where it became clear to Corso so that people will tend to rewatch to see the clues fall into place.
Definitively the best vids about the ninth gate! Great analysis, I overlooked some of these details even when I have watched that movie several times
Great video, thanks! You pointed some details I missed.
I always thought of the engravings as a mixture of Torah and Tarot cards. Like the "wheel of fortune", the "Fool/Mage" that Corso is...
Also, the 2 keys show a certain duality: the 2 journeys (Portugal, France), the 2 sexual encounters (widow, the "girl"), the fact that 1 brother is depicted as the danger from above but there are 2 brothers, the 2 keys that the hotel clerk has, the 2 attempts to open the gates (Balcan, Corso)...
That is so Iconically ironic,....I LOVE IT! I can't recall when it happened, exactly, But being a fan of Stephen King, from watching THIS film of R. Polannski, I noticed the illustrations looked most like Tarot cards, I started creating Artwork (Graphic art images from Stephen King movies, I made a list of the main major Arcana cards--- And noting what images might represent the titles/names of the cards, and so far, The Very FIRST card I came up with was I created a Pennywise image and designated it as The Tarot Arcana card titled "THE DEVIL", and a picture formed in my mind of the Autistic girl, Annie, from the made for tv film Rose Red, with a storm of boulders and a cutout of the actual house they used in the movie, I made my image of Annie holding and looking over a mini bouquet of red roses with Stars centered inside them To represent the Tarot card the Five of Pentacles. (For the 5 people who died in their quest to assist the main researcher in her attempt to PROVE that the ancient antiquated estate house was really A HAUNTED and ACTIVE LIVING object,) THEN came a more challenging subject for a Tarot image card.... Finding a CLEAR image to Attempt to Represent the Tarot card called, THE HERMIT. Apparently it was easier than I thought, because I found a GREAT CLEAR HEAD SHOT IMAGE OF MR. JOHNNY DEPP, Himself, as the Mort Rainey character from King's film, Secret Window.... :)And It just seemed to "FIT" with the meaning of the Hermit card... As Rainey HOLED himself up in the Cabin trying to deal with the betrayal of his wife, And was shown to be going crazy, insane trying to make some sort of sense of his sudden traumatic experience of walking in his bedroom in HIS house only to see the image of HIS wife loving (Activly!) another, man, IN HIS BED!!! And well, yeah, To put His own crazy, insanity, to rest, He "Simply Had to KILL THEM BOTH, in order to regain back his own Sanity and Satisfy the Hunger of the darker, malicious "Alternate Persona"of "John Shooter." who Suddenly appeared not long after Rainey Decided He was going to Claim the Cabin home as HIS NEW HOME after His wife demanded to get divorced. EXCELLENT FILM, showing how being alone for TOO long, can (and sometimes Does) cause OTHER aspects of Our own Darker sides to decide to emerge to assure us that WE aren't the Crazy ones after all.... It's all the People AROUND US who are the crazy People!! :) working on a couple more ideas for a "HANGED MAN, and THE LOVERS as well as THE PRIESTESS," and THE CHARIOT (Tarot Cards).
if the two keys represent the gatekeepers, if we take it back to your last theory where the brothers were behind the forgery, maybe they're the gate keepers. they are two seemingly identical men
yup they pulled the string on the Scaffolding ...ROTFLMAO 4 your wisdom as your fellow movie goer
This movie, much like the movie Midsommar. Tells you that the main protagonist is going into an initiation ritual through the use of pictographs. Nice analysis.
Ari Aster is very good, the short movie of the afroamerican family was indeed disturbing, like midsommar ugly boyfriend.
I agree regarding "chess by night". Balkan and Corso communicate while playing, are not only opponents but also complement each other on their path, sitll only one of them will win. The game needs both players in order to work. Just like the white and black dog playing or fighting for fun in the background, representing the light and the dark side which complement each other, so the dogs form the shape of a Yin and Yang symbol. The watcher is the moon here, depicted with face, eyes opened but mouth shut which seems to be reminiscent to the Indian cab driver.
Really appreciate the thought and effort into this video. Top drawer!
just watched secret window yesterday.....gotta love the scripts DEPP choses...he loves the great mystery- odd- strange creepy films...he is awesome for every part he has chosen.....cannot imagine any other actot pulling them off as great as DEPP ALWAYS DOES....EVERY DAMN TIME. 1 OF MY FAV ACTORS

@ JARED RUBIN.....One of Mine too!!! Secret Window is Soooo Under rated,... But one of MY Favorites! I actually created some images from Stephen King movies... To use in my Horror Art Portfolio.... And I actually am working on an idea for a Concept project for creating a Stephen King Tarot Card Deck! I actually did a DECENT Colored Pencil/inked Artwork piece of Johnny Depp as The Mort Rainey Character from Secret Window!! It took me a while to find a Good enough Good Clear head shot of him in the Hat and glasses, But I Found ONE!!! I made for the Tarot card (Major Arcana cards) The Hermit. LOL :) Then I found a good Horrific image of the TIM CURRY (Pennywise Clown) and labeled it for the tarot card "The Devil." and currently I'm working on a "Hanged Man" Tarot Major Arcana card and conceptualizing the Basement "Flying" Monster from Graveyard Shift. :) OH and I EVEN went on Ebay a few years back and Bought a DVD COPY of Johnny Depp;s Movie, FROM HELL! THERE'S ANOTHER VERY UNDER RATED FILM!! Of course, I guess a person has to have a creative Fascination for murder mysteries, Horror themes, and Jack The Ripper to be able to enjoy that film. And it also co stars one, Mister, Robbie Coltrane as a Police investigator (in his "PRE-- Hagrid" film history. And Ian Holmes, (PRE-- BILBO BAGGINS Days). But the main Stars are Johnny Depp and Heather Graham.

CineG, I just watched your evaluation of the 9 symbols. I think you've missed something important about the 9th symbol. Paying closer attention, it's not Depp as the beast.
She IS the multiheaded beast illustrated in the 9th symbol. It's the changing faces that give it away. Those changing faces were the various 'heads of the multiheaded beast' and the exoteric meaning would be that she IS the beast in human, female form.
That's how she knew everything. Including the secret of the 9th symbol. Because she is the guardian of the 9th gate and none shall pass lest she determines them worthy at that point. She initiated him with the sex ritual and then told him where to find to the real symbol for the 9th gate.
Woman was created below new yard birds lyrics
Correct. I 100% agree with this. She is the beast.
Then who is the naked woman riding the Beast?..
No.
She was riding him, taming/initiating, and beasts are supposed to be less smart than human beings. He barely caught up with Balkan's pace, and the girl had been steps ahead from them both.
After this initiation Corso regains his masculinity: he wants (finally!) not money, the answers, and not afraid of anything.
This really makes sense, i never noticed this before!
take a step forward ...lol

Thanks for watching.
the engravings have to do with the torah tree of life, the one path is the left hand path (keys) and the other one the right, Balkan failed because he paid to get there, lucifer's path was corso's (corso = travel, god in ancient Greek, word θεός) which led to the apotheosis and opened the gates of the kingdom of shadows which is our material world to something higher. That's why there is an engraving with a guy hunting material processions and the time behind to remind him that life is not about materialism.
Why is there light shining out of the kingdom of shadows?
I love this great movie. Its a smart thriller with the touch of horror. I find it often not always, many movies based on books have a much better foundation, especially for a mystery.
Thank you for your view of this film with Johnny Depp
I thought maybe the beast she was sitting on was a kid that her and Corso made?
That Corso himself wasn't the one, but the child they conceived could be?.. But, I dunno, that just seems to be a direction a lot of these type movies go.
(I mean Corso had his charms, but he didn't strike me as the chosen lord of hell -- or whatever is supposed to come out of all of this)

I think some of the differences are why are you trying to summon the devil. Symbology answers most of these- left hand vs right hand, 4 (turrets) vs 3, two (arrows) vs one, right leg (hanging body) vs left leg, etc…. but the real last engraving is hidden and only revealed to whoever follows the rules
Brilliant , and this is what makes us better occultist. To be able to see these signs in the real world when they appear. ⭐
Love this movie! Another superb bit of analysis on your behalf. Maybe do Jacob's Ladder next? Seems like it would fit into the same milieu of Angel Heart and The Ninth Gate. Blade Runner and Dark City are also flicks of a similar vibe.

I just watched juxtaposition video of the ninth gate and eyes wide shut. They both came out the same year and I’ve always thought the ninth gate was a superior movie but we’ll never know cause of Kubrick untimely death and didn’t get to finish the movie
Hello CineG, Do you think the engraving with the window opening shut off with bricks could also be somehow related to the baroness who was striking against the window when Corso regains consciousness...after her library was set on fire
Why not? I think they tried to be most creative associating scenes and symbols to the engravings. Thanks for watching.

In the Ninth Gate, the Delomelonicon represents not an ascent into a paradise but rather a descent into Hell where the final card is one's embracing of the truth in love. It is deceiving because one flips the pages and expects progression or resolution like most books. It represents the knights journey as the Devil is usually representative of aristocracy and stands opposed to all nobility. The aristocracy often does not understand the struggle for resources and its violent potential. They see it as a threat. This nightmare book is a warning to the more noble struggle.
Great analysis! The Ninth Gate is one of my favourite 'horror' films, although I think that label is not a good enough description. I'm currently tracking down good quality internet images of the drawings, to frame and hang on my wall.
I already own the Balkan edition and all 9 LCF engravings.
@@joea363 I managed to find and download the whole book, with all the repeating latin texts and good quality drawings. I'll be printing them off this week. Not sure if I'll print the whole book out, although it would be cool to make a copy. Soooo much ink and time to do the whole thing :-(
@@jeffreybarton1297 Just FYI, you can also obtain a perfect replica of each of the three books. I own an exact copy of the Balkan book, right down the scuff mark. I cannot see any differences in my edition and the one appears in the movie, both in terms of the interior pages and illustrations as well as in the cover and the binding. I found it on Esty.
@@joea363 Wow! Thanks Joe, I'll check that out! It would be pretty cool to have a copy on my shelf :-)
@@joea363 Couldn't resist it. Got the Deluxe Balkan edition with the extra postcard and drawings :-)
Thank you Netflix for this gem
Any theories on what is beyond the ninth gate? Is it true, Corso is gradually become obsessed with the 9 engravings as much as Balkan?
Yes. Eventually he wanted the knowledge and to enter into the 9th gate.
@@Moonewitch well, that reminds me of Umberto Eco's Name of the Rose, which could be the monks' obsession, but if you read the Dumas Club I wonder if that's the motive, like Event Horizon, they are obsessed with pain as pleasure. I am still wondering the obsession with hell has a sadomasochist underpinning.
aren't we all at this point? anyone in the comments or watching the video at least :D
The first and 9th engraving are the same, again it's the dragon eating its own tail, death and resurrection, the last is the first, it ends where it all begins
The Dragon of the 9th engraving and the Dark Horse of the 1st engraving (which symbolizes an unexpected victor) are emblems of the Protagnist
The Knight and the Lady/Mystery is the girl with the green coat
She rides the dragon holding the book, directing the dragon as it goes, three of the dragons head seem to have fallen
She rides the horse directing by the reins, she's an unexpected Victor, a secret, a mystery, who takes the throne unexpectedly
The King plays chess with the boy, as Balkan with Corso, the tables are about to be turned, bridged burned, Corso is moving a piece that will in two moves check the Kings King
Mystery Babylon as the Moon watches over through the window, as a black dog pounces on the white dog, back in black
An unexpected turn of events, only for men it is unexpected but for the God's it was already written. Fated
The engraving of the man hanging out the window is Balkan, cursed to lose. Like the Joker with three dice rolling by, the maze, the game (chess) set before him was rigged against him, his fate sealed from the start, he really had only one outcome, which was to lose. The maze cannot be solved, there are no ways out to the exit from the entry. Just as the King has no way of winning the game, his time is out, he has no way of escaping his impending doom.
The engraving of the man and his dog at the door, this one's a bit tricky, I'm not sure what it means, but the two keys are symbolic, one key is a key to heaven, the other earth, a bridge between both worlds, with danger looming over (as shown in the other engraving). The lantern placed on the ground may have a meaning, and again we see the black dog just like the dog in the engraving of the chess game.
The 8th engraving is a depiction of martyrdom, a sacrifice of Corso, where Balkan is swinging the club, by death Corso shall become immortal. His loyalty, noble devotion rewarded... there is victory even in death.
At the back of the 8th engraving we see a wheel, the wheel is a depiction of Life, man's life, the wheel of time turning, turning anti-clockwise, Corso is the 3rd person on the far right. And Balkan is the center who is currently in power, the King, the Executioner, nevertheless time is not in his favor, he is running out of time, he will soon fall and Corso will rise and shine
So it is that all 9 Engravings were spread in 3 Books, But the Three Books were truly One Story, made by One Author... Mystery Babylon, Arcan en, what was concealed at the beginning (1st engraving, hush) was revealed in the end (Mystery and Beast, One book and 7 hills and 7 heads), Riding to the same castle, the Capitoline, the fortress of old, the Gateway to heaven, Babylon
I take death holding the hourglass as meaning nthey are out of time and they’re either trying to buy more time or cheat death. And to me that’s the whole quest for the books to try to cheat death
This is one of my favorite movies if not my favorite. love it. How about this? Corso and Torchia are the only two people on earth, as far as we know, that the devil allowed to conjure Her (her for this movie). Both seemed to be destined for this and even the ceniza brothers didnt destroy the 9th template even though they could have because, I presume it was Corso's destiny. Is there a stronger link between Torchia and Corso? any way Torchia was an ancestor or reincarnated as Corso? From Wikipedia: The surname Corso was first found in Syracuse a city of Sicily, capital of the province of Sicily. Not far from Tochia........just curious.
GREAT ASSOCIATIONS AND CONNECTIONS.... REAL LIFE IS JUST SO AMAZINGLY IRONIC SOMETIMES, Isn't it?!?!
maybe Torchia planned to go thru the gates himself but was persecuted and not allowed to travel so before they arrested him he hid them in the books?
If you like this movie you might also like "Dead Man", also starring Depp. I certainly like both.
Great movie...so much symbology...even when he pulls up at the gas station and we see the shell corporate logo. Its not a shell on the logo at all its the rising sun... in reference to the light bearer.
and the taxi door with "please do not slam door" on the backwards sign.
The only question I have about the movie is what’s the purpose of entering the ninth gate? Is it death ?
The game ingraving with the king and the common playing chess is described in detail and the video sites the taxi phone both scene, yet no mention of the chess board checkers on the cab in the frame.
Holy s*** this movie is a masterpiece or what!!
Would be a challenge to open the ninth gate to see if it was real. I would live to know if you could open it in real life
Number 8: may the spinning wheel remind of the old lady's wheel chair?
or maybe the owner of three books.
My favourite movie. I live not far from the castle.
may i know the name of the place please
@@elhamtavakoli5022 sure my friend. It is the Château de Puivert. I have some pics if you want. Add me on facebook username : Lau rent. Once the lockdown is over I am planning to go back there. Many scenes from the llast part of the movie were shot in my area.
@@laurentquintana262 thank you
In France ?
@@Mophonic yes !
That last one was awesome.
This is one of my top fave movies of all time. I liked how Corso's witty brain figured out quickly the original engravings must have an LCF sign. Balkan pursued knowledge but he was also quick to trust the deep fake it was given to him. I think that the woman was actually the devil and the scarlet of Babylon in the original myth was the devil himself. However, I can't figure out why LCF went through all this trouble just to bring the soul of man into hell when he has billions of others?
Maybe that dog is a familiar in cahoots with the girl aka the succubus.
The girl was Lilith obviously.
No.
All of them made sense I agree but the 7th seemed a little stretched. I think the meaning of the pictures are all that it's a prophecy for corso to open the nonth gate that parts right but I think there might be more to the 7th engraving
Could be between Corso and Frida. Frida is the devil expert but Corso showed her the secret is hidden in three books
Very good.
Even though I despise Roman Polanski on a cellular level as a human being, I can still recognize his talent as a film maker. This movie was looked at as a let down at the time of it's release because it failed to live up to Rosemary's Baby, but I thought this was the better of the two movies.
Thanks for writing this. My videos are about the film and its artistic decisions not a single individual. The film was made and I choose not to pretend it doesn't exist, i.e. "cancelling". His future will be decided by others, not on this channel.
My favourite occult movie of all time, by far. I've watched it three times and would like to watch it again, and again (my VCR player failed awhile back; I taped it off television). The one movie that made me want to believe which I am unable to. A masterpiece. I cannot understand the critic's criticism of this movie at all. It totally grabbed me when I first watched it and obviously still does. I think the interpretations of the engravings, so far as they could be considered real was pretty close to what was intended by Polanski.
headache, something i watched and still wondering what it means... it seems open-ended
the ending shows his willingness to serve the devil at its pleasure
The 9 pages made of 3 pieces from 3 different books makes the instruction to the 9th gate
Thank you very much for your videos. I really, really love this movie and never fully understood the whole simbolism, till now. Please keep going with your videos. My personal theory is that the girl is lucifer himself in disguise...
How about Lilith?
The 7th gate in which the king plays chess against the burglar plays out as a draw, even though the king is one rook up after the first move. Which fits to the comment under the picture “Discipline outshines the master”.
And what is behind the ninth gate? Eternal fire?
You get to talk with an Angel cast out of heaven. . . . In the book "The Club Dumas". . .Corso and the Green Eyed Girl (demoness) discuss Milton's Paradise Lost (I like books) view of the Devil, of a lonely abandoned Angel sitting alone in an empty banquet hall, after the party is over. Waiting for when God will forgive him and let him and his followers back into Heaven.
@@katsu-graphics5634 Ok thanx. Sounds reasonable then.
This is creepy as fack but brilliant. Thanks for the dissection of this. Wanna see more of these kinda movie dissections/explanations... Should do ones like Devil or devil's advocate etc
@Jordan Smith --- Can you simply imagine a dissection and analysis of Nastasia Kinski/ Malcolm McDowell's Cat People?? Or Elijah Wood's THE FACULTY??,
The game of chest. The king has to have royal Blood and who is of royal blood the Baroness Kessler and they are both at a table plus they are both try to get each other to listen to one an others point!
I would like to add that some more pages Balkan is putting on the table seem to be wrong. Shouldn't they all be the drawings signed with "LCF" for Lucifer? E.g. from the chess board colour I can tell that Balkan puts the drawing of A. Torchia "AT" on the table instead of the "LCF" page. Looks like a continuity error has occured while shooting the film. Or the film-makers thought people won't notice tBalkan's wrong "A.T: pages, when they see them from a distance and upside down from their viewpoint. As for the movie, it means that Balkan's ritusl would have failed even if the 9th page had been the right one. I think it is worth to check out the Blu-Ray, freeze frame, take a snapshot of that scene and turn it upside down and compare with close-up snapshots from ealier parts of the movie, and find out if Balkan had used more wrong "A.T." drawings instead of the correct "LCF" ones by Lucifer.
The 9th engraving that was forged has flames coming out of the tower like when Balkin went up in flames… and the authentic engraving has a star shining out of it…very cool
I enjoy 👍
